Background\ud During the past decades, neutral DNA markers have been extensively employed to study demography, population genetics and structure in livestock, but less interest has been devoted to the evaluation of livestock adaptive potential through the identification of genomic regions likely to be under natural selection.\ud \ud Methodology/Principal findings\ud Landscape genomics can greatly benefit the entire livestock system through the identification of genotypes better adapted to specific or extreme environmental conditions. Therefore we analyzed 101 AFLP markers in 43 European and Western Asian goat breeds both with Matsam software, based on a correlative approach (SAM), and with Mcheza and Bayescan, two FST based software able to detect markers carrying signatures of natural selection.\ud \ud Matsam identified four loci possibly under natural selection – also confirmed by FST-outlier methods – and significantly associated with environmental variables such as diurnal temperature range, frequency of precipitation, relative humidity and solar radiation.\ud \ud Conclusions/Significance\ud These results show that landscape genomics can provide useful information on the environmental factors affecting the adaptive potential of livestock living in specific climatic conditions. Besides adding conservation value to livestock genetic resources, this knowledge may lead to the development of novel molecular tools useful to preserve the adaptive potential of local breeds during genetic improvement programs, and to increase the adaptability of industrial breeds to changing environments.

BACKGROUND. Farmers are faced with a wide range of pest management (PM) options which can be adopted in isolation or alongside complement or substitute strategies. This paper presents the results of a survey of UK cereal producers focusing on the character and diversity of PM strategies currently used by, or available to, farmers. In addition, the survey asked various questions pertaining to agricultural policy participation, attitude toward environmental issues, sources of PM advice and information and the important characteristics of PM technologies. RESULTS. The results indicate that many farmers do make use of a suite of PM techniques and that their choice of integrated PM (IPM) portfolio appears to be jointly dictated by farm characteristics and Government policy. Results also indicate that portfolio choice does affect the number of subsequent insecticide applications per crop. CONCLUSIONS. These results help to identify the type of IPM portfolios considered adoptable by farmers and highlight the importance of substitution in IPM portfolios. As such, these results will help to direct R&D effort toward the realisation of more sustainable PM approaches and aid the identification of potential portfolio adopters. These findings highlight the opportunity a revised agri-environmental policy design could generate in terms of by enhancing coherent IPM portfolio adoption.

Background SNP data of goats of three Mediterranean countries were used for population studies and reconstruction of geographical patterning. 496 individuals belonging to Italian, Albanian and Greek breeds were genotyped to assess the basic population parameters. Results A total of 26 SNPs were used, for a total of 12,896 genotypes assayed. Statistical analysis revealed that breeds are not so similar in terms of genetic variability, as reported in studies performed using different markers. The Mantel test showed a strongly significant correlation between genetic and geographic distance. Also, PCA analysis revealed that breeds are grouped according to geographical origin, with the exception of the Greek Skopelos breed. Conclusion Our data point out that the use of SNP markers to analyze a wider breed sample could help in understanding the recent evolutionary history of domestic goats. We found correlation between genetic diversity and geographic distance. Also PCA analysis shows that the breeds are well differentiated, with good correspondence to geographical locations, thus confirming the correlation between geographical and genetic distances. This suggests that migration history of the species played a pivotal role in the present-day structure of the breeds and a scenario in which coastal routes were easier for migrating in comparison with inland routes. A westward coastal route to Italy through Greece could have led to gene flow along the Northern Mediterranean.

- Abstract
Local sheep and goat breeds are generally argued to be remarkably well adapted to marginal rural areas. The latter are often said to be particularly or solely suitable for extensive husbandry mostly based on small ruminants. However, many local sheep and goat breeds are presently endangered. Both conserving these breeds and maintaining an active agricultural presence in marginal areas are presently two major priorities for agricultural and rural development policy in Europe. The objective of this paper is to analyse the spatial link between the geographic distribution of traditional, locally adapted sheep and goat breeds and the relative marginality of regions. The concept of marginal areas is discussed and defined and an index of relative marginality is computed in a Geographic Information System. The index combines land use, demographic and socio-economic data. The correlation between the marginality of a region measured by the index and the geographic distribution of sheep and goat breeds is analysed using a simple logit model. The broader interest of the index as a tool for agricultural and rural development policy applications is then discussed. (c) 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

16. Plasma FSH, LH and Prolactin Levels in Postmenopausal Women Undergoing Cyclofenil Treatment

- Abstract
Ten postmenopausal women were studied in an attempt to identify the mechanism of action of cyclofenil, a non-steroidal anti-estrogen which has proved to be effective in the climacteric syndrome. A double-blind inter-patient clinical investigation was undertaken, with patients assigned randomly to treatment for 10 days with cyclofenil, 400 mg/ day, or else conjugated estrogens, 1.25 mg/day, always given orally at 8 a.m. Serum FSH, LH and PRL levels were determined daily 2 days before, during and for 2 days after treatment. On the first and tenth day of treatment, five blood samples were drawn between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. to ascertain if there was any drug-induced variation in the hormonal secretory patterns. Furthermore, endometrial biopsies of all patients were taken before and immediately after the 10-day treatment. In 5 patients, endometrial biopsies were repeated after 3—6 months of therapy with cyclofenil. The results indicate that cyclofenil has two opposing actions on the hypothalamic-hypophyseal axis, one estrogen-like, in that it depresses serum FSH levels, and the other antiestro-gen-like, in that it depresses serum PRL levels. They also show that at both the peripheral and the central level cyclofenil is a drug of first choice for postmenopausal women at risk for endometrial and mammary neoplastic pathology.

- Abstract
Purpose: We developed a transthoracic echo simulator that can measure psychomotor skill in echo to assist in training as well as for certification of competence. The simulator displays cine loops on a computer in response to the user scanning a mannequin with a mock transducer. The skill metric is the deviation angle between the image acquired by the user and the anatomically correct plane for the specified view. We sought to determine whether the simulator-based test could distinguish levels of expertise. Methods: Attendees at an echo course or at the annual meeting of the Swedish Heart Association were invited to take a 15 min test on the simulator. On the test, the user scanned the mannequin and acquired 4 views: parasternal long axis (pLAX) in patient 1, apical 4 chamber (a4c) and aLAX in patient 2, and pLAX in patient 3. Scan time was limited to 15 min. Attendees were asked regarding current work status, position, and experience with echo assessed from duration in years and procedure volume in the past 12 months. Results: Of the 61 participants there were 22 sonographers, 2 nurses, and 37 doctors who were all in practice except 1 doctor who was a resident. The data of nurses was combined with that of sonographers because their procedure volume was nearer to that of sonographers (850 ± 599 tests/yr) than doctors (312 ± 393, p < 0.001). Doctors and non-doctors had similar duration of experience (9 ± 8 vs. 12 ± 11 yrs, p=NS). The test was not completed by 12 participants (18%) but unfamiliarity with the simulator may have contributed because the deviation angle for pLAX dropped between the first and third patients (23 ± 11 to 18 ± 10 degrees, p<0.020). The average deviation angle over the 4 views was slightly lower for sonographers than for doctors (26 ± 11 vs. 30 ± 14 degrees, p=NS). The deviation angle for pLAX (55 ± 37 degrees) was higher than for a4C (17 ± 22 degrees) or either pLAX view (p<0.00001). pLAX was the only view whose deviation angle correlated significantly with experience and only with procedure volume (r=-0.302, p=0.025). Conclusions: The results of this study demonstrate that the skill metric employed, angle of deviation between the plane of an acquired view and the plane of the anatomically correct image for that view, can distinguish the relative experience of sonographers and doctors in practice. Simulation-based testing provides objective and quantitative assessment of the psychomotor skill of image acquisition and may be of value in certification of trainees and in maintenance of certification examination of practicing sonographers and doctors.

Eight young healthy male subjects, members of a Himalayan expedition, underwent 24 h Holter monitoring before departure, after 1 and 4 weeks at high altitude (5000 m) and after return to sea level. At high altitude, the circadian reciprocal changes in low and high frequency (LF, HF) were absent, with no significant reduction in the LF to HF ratio over the 24 h; moreover, the proportion of adjacent R-R intervals that differed by more than 50 ms (pNN50) decreased significantly and remained lower after return to sea level. Urine catecholamines increased at high altitude, but only norepinephrine, after 1 week of exposure, rose significantly. Upon return to sea level the density, but not the affinity, of [alpha]2-adrenergic receptors on platelets decreased significantly compared to pre-expedition values. At high altitude increased sympathetic activity was indicated by elevation of urine norepinephrine and by the loss of circadian rhythm in spectral components. The simultaneous reduction of HF and pNN50 demonstrated decreased vagal tone. The persistence of increased sympathetic activity could explain the downregulation of adrenergic receptors after prolonged high altitude exposure.

Aim: Adherence to guidelines was not homogeneous in Europe, according to the survey on cardiac resynchronization therapy conducted in 2008-2009. The aim of our study was to compare the results in the Italian and European cohorts of the Second European Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy Survey., Methods: Patients' characteristics, procedural data and follow-up were collected. Italian records were compared with European countries., Results: Italian hospitals enrolled 526 patients. The italian cohort was older (71.6 ± 9.5 vs. 68.4 ± 10.8; P < 0.00001), had less severe NYHA class (>II 47.2 vs. 59.6%; P < 0.00001), higher ejection fraction (30.3 ± 7.4 vs. 28.4 ± 8.2%; P < 0.00001), and less atrial fibrillation prevalence (34.4 vs. 41.2%; P = 0.00197) than the European cohort. Italian patients were more frequently hospitalized for heart failure in the previous year (51.9 vs. 46.2%; P = 0.01118) and had lower mean QRS duration (151 ± 26 vs. 157 ± 27 ms; P < 0.0001). CRT-D were more often implanted in Italian patients (79.3 vs. 69.3%; P < 0.00001). The complication rate was similar (4.6% vs. 5.6%; ns). The rate of use of ACEi/ARBs in Italy was lower than in Europe (77.2 vs. 86.9%; P < 0.00001). Patients were followed up in the implantation centre (92.1 vs. 86%; P = 0.00014), but rarely with remote monitoring (25.9 vs. 30%; P = 0.04792)., Conclusion: The survey demonstrates important similarities as well as substantial differences regarding most of the aspects evaluated. Efforts to implement adherence to guidelines will be endorsed in Italy.

- Abstract
Background: Farmers are faced with a wide range of pest management (PM) options that can be adopted in isolation or alongside complementary or substitute strategies. This paper presents the results of a survey of UK cereal producers, focusing on the character and diversity of PM strategies currently used by, or available to, farmers. In addition, the survey asked various questions pertaining to agricultural policy participation, attitude towards environmental issues, sources of PM advice and information and the important characteristics of PM technologies., Results: The results indicate that many farmers do make use of a suite of PM techniques, and that their choice of integrated PM (IPM) portfolio appears to be jointly dictated by farm characteristics and government policy. Results also indicate that portfolio choice does affect the number of subsequent insecticide applications per crop., Conclusions: These results help to identify the type of IPM portfolios considered to be adoptable by farmers and highlight the importance of substitution in IPM portfolios. As such, these results will help to direct R&D effort towards the realisation of more sustainable PM approaches and aid the identification of potential portfolio adopters. These findings highlight the opportunity that a revised agri-environmental policy design could generate in terms of enhancing coherent IPM portfolio adoption., (Copyright 2009 Society of Chemical Industry.)

- Abstract
The influence of age on the response of plasma lipids, body composition, and cardiovascular performance to physical training and detraining was studied in 12 older and 12 young adult male cyclists. The athletes were first examined at the peak of their seasonal preparation and then again 2 months after its suspension. Sedentary males matched for age, weight, and height comprised the respective control groups. During training, body fat mass (BFM) was significantly lower and maximum oxygen consumption (VO2max) higher in both groups of cyclists as compared with controls. No differences in serum total cholesterol (TC), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), apolipoprotein (apo) B, apo A-II, and fibrinogen were found. During the same phase, triglycerides (TG) and the LDL-C to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) ratio were significantly lower and apo A-I, HDL-C, HDL3-C, and the apo A-I/apo B ratio were significantly higher in the athletes than in their corresponding sedentary controls. After physical deconditioning, BFM increased and VO2max decreased significantly in both groups of athletes. TG, very-low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (VLDL-C), and fibrinogen increased in young athletes while the LDL-C/HDL-C ratio increased, and apo A-I, HDL-C, HDL2-C, and HDL3-C decreased significantly in both young and older athletes. Thus, an aerobic training program induced an antiatherogenic lipoprotein profile and beneficial modifications in body composition and aerobic power in both older and younger subjects; a 2-month interruption in the program changed these parameters unfavorably in both groups. Age does not seem to influence significantly the plasma lipid response to physical deconditioning.
