Abstract

HERMES Pathfinder is an in-orbit demonstration consisting of a constellation of six 3U cubesats hosting simple but innovative X-ray/gamma-ray detectors for the monitoring of cosmic high-energy transients. HERMES-PF, funded by ASI and by the EC Horizon 2020 grant, is scheduled for launch in Q1 2025. An identical X-ray/gamma-ray detector is hosted by the Australian 6U cubesat SpIRIT, launched on December 1st 2023. The main objective of HERMES-PF/SpIRIT is to demonstrate that high energy cosmic transients can be detected efficiently by miniatured hardware and localized using triangulation techniques. The HERMES-PF X-ray/gamma-ray detector is made by 60 GAGG:Ce scintillator crystals and 12 2x5 silicon drift detector (SDD) mosaics, used to detect both the cosmic X-rays directly and the optical photons produced by gamma-ray interactions with the scintillator crystals. This design provides a unique broad band spectral coverage from a few keV to a few MeV. Furthermore, the use of fast GAGG:Ce crystals and small SDD cells allows us to reach an exquisite time resolution better than a microsecond. We present a progress report on the missions focusing the discussion on the scientific innovation of the project and on the main lessons learned during the project development including: the importance and the challenges of using distributed architectures to achieve ambitious scientific objectives; the importance of developing critical technologies under science agreements for the realization of high-performing but low-cost payloads; best use of COTS technologies in scientific missions. Abstract

HERMES (High Energy Rapid Modular Ensemble of Satellites) Pathfinder is a space-borne mission based on a constellation of six nano-satellites flying in a low-Earth orbit (LEO). The 3U CubeSats, to be launched in early 2025, host miniaturized instruments with a hybrid Silicon Drift Detector/GAGG:Ce scintillator photodetector system, sensitive to X-rays and gamma-rays in a large energy band. HERMES will operate in conjunction with Australian Space Industry Responsive Intelligent Thermal (SpIRIT) 6U CubeSat, launched in December 2023. HERMES will probe the temporal emission of bright high-energy transients such as Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs), ensuring a fast transient localization in a field of view of several steradians exploiting the triangulation technique. HERMES intrinsically modular transient monitoring experiment represents a keystone capability to complement the next generation of gravitational wave experiments. Abstract

The HERMES-TP/SP (High Energy Rapid Modular Ensemble of Satellites -- Technologic and Scientific Pathfinder) is an in-orbit demonstration of the so-called distributed astronomy concept. Conceived as a mini-constellation of six 3U nano-satellites hosting a new miniaturized detector, HERMES-TP/SP aims at the detection and accurate localisation of bright high-energy transients such as Gamma-Ray Bursts. The large energy band, the excellent temporal resolution and the wide field of view that characterize the detectors of the constellation represent the key features for the next generation high-energy all-sky monitor with good localisation capabilities that will play a pivotal role in the future of Multi-messenger Astronomy. In this work, we will describe in detail the temporal techniques that allow the localisation of bright transient events taking advantage of their almost simultaneous observation by spatially spaced detectors. The projects are funded by the Italian Ministry of University and Research and by the Italian Space Agency, and by the European Union Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Program under Grant Agreement No. 821896. HERMES-TP/SP is an in-orbit demonstration, that should be tested starting from 2022. Abstract

The High Energy Modular Ensemble of Satellites (HERMES) project is aimed to realize a modular X/gamma-ray monitor for transient events, to be placed on-board of a CubeSat bus. This expandable platform will achieve a significant impact on Gamma Ray Burst (GRB) science and on the detection of Gravitational Wave (GW) electromagnetic counterparts: the recent LIGO/VIRGO discoveries demonstrated that the high-energy transient sky is still a field of extreme interest. The very complex temporal variability of GRBs (up to the millisecond scale) combined with the spatial and temporal coincidence between GWs and their electromagnetic counterparts suggest that upcoming instruments require sub-ms time resolution combined with a transient localization accuracy lower than a degree. The current phase of the ongoing HERMES project is focused on the realization of a technological pathfinder with a small network (3 units) of nano-satellites to be launched in mid 2020. We will show the potential and prospects for short and medium-term development of the project, demonstrating the disrupting possibilities for scientific investigations provided by the innovative concept of a new "modular astronomy" with nano-satellites (e.g. low developing costs, very short realization time). Finally, we will illustrate the characteristics of the HERMES Technological Pathfinder project, demonstrating how the scientific goals discussed are actually already reachable with the first nano-satellites of this constellation. The detector architecture will be described in detail, showing that the new generation of scintillators (e.g. GAGG:Ce) coupled with very performing Silicon Drift Detectors (SDD) and low noise Front-End-Electronics (FEE) are able to extend down to few keV the sensitivity band of the detector. Abstract

Due to the powder nature of a solid rocket propellant, a better understanding of the packing structure is needed. In this study, a constructive algorithm in order to simulate the Random Loose packing process, is developed, and it is an improvement of the classical, so called, dropping and roll method. In particular, the final position of each sphere is determined solving an analytical model, and it leads to better accuracy in the final results. Moreover, this algorithm can be applied not just to a mono-sized sphere packing, but each sphere can have a different radius. Furthermore, a 2D map is created in order to find the volume fraction for bi-modal propellant function of the radius ratio and different percentage of each components. Also the contact number behavior (related with the inner structure) is analyzed.

Abstract

ESA Deep Space Antennas are currently equipped with precise meteorological stations, capable to measuring the atmospheric parameters. Thanks to mathematical models both dry and wet components are estimated in order to remove the troposphere delay from Doppler data for deep space probe navigation purposes. Although the mentioned technique for the estimation of the troposphere delay offers high precision in the estimation of the dry component, this is not true for the wet one. In particular, the estimation of the wet component using meteorological data leaves an uncalibrated wet delay which reduces the precision in the Orbit Determination (OD) process of ESA spacecrafts (S/C). A novel GPS-based software (S/W) code has been developed at the Radio Science Laboratory of the University of Bologna in Forlì, aimed at the estimation of the troposphere delay, in particular the wet component. Thanks to the acquisition of raw data from the GPS receiver installed close to the ESA Deep Space Antenna in Cebreros, Spain, the local troposphere path delay has been estimated with this new algorithm. The obtained results have been feed into the ESOC’s interplanetary orbit determination software, and the quality of the range-rate residuals compared to those obtained with standard tropospheric calibrations. To this aim, range-rate data from the ESA deep space probe Venus Express, as acquired at the Cebreros Deep Space Antenna, while the spacecraft was close quadrature with the Earth and the Sun. This paper describes the data analysis performed on the acquired S/C range-rate and GPS-receiver measurements and the conclusions and recommendations for further studies.

Abstract

Numerical studies intended to predict solid rocket motors anomalies are the major contributors when developing strategies to both limit expensive fire tests and to investigate and understand the physical phenomena from which anomalies can arise. This paper aims to present a mathematical–physical method to evaluate the pressure peak, namely Friedman Curl, occurring at the tail-off phase of small-scale rocket motors. Such phenomenon is linked to the grain solid particles arrangement (i.e., packing effect); indeed, those particles show a tendency to accumulate at a certain distance from the metallic case, implying a local burn rate increment and a combustion chamber pressure rise close to the tail-off phase. Comparisons between experimental and simulated combustion chamber pressure profiles are outlined to prove the effectiveness of the mathematical–physical approach. Simulations were carried out with an internal ballistic simulation tool developed by the authors of this work.

Abstract

HERMES-TP/SP (High Energy Rapid Modular Ensemble of Satellites Technologic and Scientific Pathfinder) is a constellation of six 3U nano-satellites hosting simple but innovative X-ray detectors, characterized by a large energy band and excellent temporal resolution, and thus optimized for the monitoring of Cosmic High Energy transients such as Gamma Ray Bursts and the electromagnetic counterparts of Gravitational Wave Events, and for the determination of their positions. The projects are funded by the Italian Ministry of University and Research and by the Italian Space Agency, and by the European Union Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Program under Grant Agreement No. 821896. HERMES-TP/SP is an in-orbit demonstration, that should be tested starting from 2022. Abstract

HERMES (High Energy Rapid Modular Ensemble of Satellites) Technological and Scientific pathfinder is a space borne mission based on a LEO constellation of nano-satellites. The 3U CubeSat buses host new miniaturized detectors to probe the temporal emission of bright high-energy transients such as Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs). Fast transient localization, in a field of view of several steradians and with arcmin-level accuracy, is gained by comparing time delays among the same event detection epochs occurred on at least 3 nano-satellites. With a launch date in 2022, HERMES transient monitoring represents a keystone capability to complement the next generation of gravitational wave experiments. In this paper we will illustrate the HERMES payload design, highlighting the technical solutions adopted to allow a wide-energy-band and sensitive X-ray and gamma-ray detector to be accommodated in a CubeSat 1U volume together with its complete control electronics and data handling system., Comment: 12 pages, 13 figures. Abstract

This work describes a new simulation code developed at the II Faculty of Engineering of the University of Bologna, with the purpose of repr oducing non-homogeneous combustion regression rate of the surface in Solid Rocket Moto rs (SRM). The programm has been created entirely in Matlab language and uses an ori ginal geometric approach, borrowed from computer graphics, to define the istantaneous propellant volume. A triangle surface mesh is applied to the initial surface and then is moved and deformed to simulate the combustion process and the mass consumption. Local variations of the burning rate value, i.e. of the mesh vertex displacement, allow to obta in surface non-homogeneous regressions, which may be easily used to investigate real case a nomalies detected in the behaviour of SRMs and generally called Hump or BARF 1,2 . The developed code is very flexible and a wide range of motor geometries may be easily uploaded. A preliminary validation phase has been performed through the comparison with the results provided for specific cases by other twodimensional simulators.

Abstract

GrailQuest (Gamma-ray Astronomy International Laboratory for Quantum Exploration of Space-Time) is an ambitious astrophysical mission concept that uses a fleet of small satellites whose main objective is to search for a dispersion law for light propagation in vacuo. Within Quantum Gravity theories, different models for space-time quantization predict relative discrepancies of the speed of photons w.r.t. the speed of light that depend on the ratio of the photon energy to the Planck energy. This ratio is as small as 10-23 for photons in the γ- ray band (100 keV). Therefore, to detect this effect, light must propagate over enormous distances and the experiment must have extraordinary sensitivity. Gamma-Ray Bursts, occurring at cosmological distances, could be used to detect this tiny signature of space-time granularity. This can be obtained by coherently combine a huge number of small instruments distributed in space to act as a single detector of unprecedented effective area. This is the first example of high-energy distributed astronomy: a new concept of modular observatory of huge overall collecting area consisting in a fleet of small satellites in low orbits, with sub-microsecond time resolution and wide energy band (keV-MeV). The enormous number of collected photons will allow to effectively search these energy dependent delays. Moreover, GrailQuest will allow to perform temporal triangulation of impulsive events with arc-second positional accuracies: an extraordinary sensitive X-ray/Gamma all-sky monitor crucial for hunting the elusive electromagnetic counterparts of Gravitational Waves, that will play a paramount role in the future of Multi-messenger Astronomy. A pathfinder of GrailQuest is already under development through the HERMES (High Energy Rapid Modular Ensemble of Satellites) project: a fleet of six 3U cube-sats to be launched by the end of 2022.

21. An Effective Sensor Architecture for Full-Attitude Determination in the HERMES Nano-Satellites.

Abstract

The High Energy Rapid Modular Ensemble of Satellites (HERMES) is a constellation of 3U nano-satellites for high energy astrophysics. The HERMES nano-satellites' components have been designed, verified, and tested to detect and localize energetic astrophysical transients, such as short gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), which are the electromagnetic counterparts of gravitational wave events, thanks to novel miniaturized detectors sensitive to X-rays and gamma-rays. The space segment is composed of a constellation of CubeSats in low-Earth orbit (LEO), ensuring an accurate transient localization in a field of view of several steradians exploiting the triangulation technique. To achieve this goal, guaranteeing a solid support to future multi-messenger astrophysics, HERMES shall determine its attitude and orbital states with stringent requirements. The scientific measurements bind the attitude knowledge within 1 deg (1σa) and the orbital position knowledge within 10 m (1σo). These performances shall be reached considering the mass, volume, power, and computation constraints of a 3U nano-satellite platform. Thus, an effective sensor architecture for full-attitude determination was developed for the HERMES nano-satellites. The paper describes the hardware typologies and specifications, the configuration on the spacecraft, and the software elements to process the sensors' data to estimate the full-attitude and orbital states in such a complex nano-satellite mission. The aim of this study was to fully characterize the proposed sensor architecture, highlighting the available attitude and orbit determination performance and discussing the calibration and determination functions to be implemented on-board. The presented results derived from model-in-the-loop (MIL) and hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) verification and testing activities and can serve as useful resources and a benchmark for future nano-satellite missions.
