This paper describes the application to health physics dosimetry problems of thermoluminescent dosimeters consisting of phosphor incorporated into a Teflon matrix. Techniques of fabrication of such phosphor-Teflon dosimeters of various shapes and sizes are described. Examples of the geometrical forms that have been used are discs with diameters between 6 and 13 mm and thicknesses from 0.02 to 0.5 mm, rods of 1 mm diameter of various lengths, and tape 25 mm wide and 0.4 mm thick. The specific advantages and limitations for health physics applications of each of the three important thermoluminescent phosphors-LiF, CaF2: Mn and CaSO4: Mn - that have been incorporated into Teflon are presented. Basis for the selection of the various dosimeter shapes and the preferred phosphor for each type of health physics application is described in detail. Finger and hand dosimetry, “piggy-back” TLD with film badges, and other personnel dosimetry concepts are discussed together with more general applications in health physics.
