Due to their appealing colors, gem quality tourmalines, particularly the blue to green Cu- and Mn-bearing Li-tourmalines known as the Paraíba type, have been of significant interest since their discovery at the end of 1980s. At the same time, the demand of other similar colored tourmalines increased. Most Paraíba-type tourmalines belong to the elbaite species; however, liddicoatite gems can also be found. Recognizing and classifying various tourmaline species, especially these valued Paraíba-type tourmalines, are important for geologists, mineralogists, mineral collectors, and gemologists. This study explores the application of Raman spectroscopy in random crystal orientations to distinguish between the elbaite and liddicoatite tourmaline species. Raman spectra were collected from faceted blue to green Li-tourmalines alongside chemical analysis using EDXRF (Energy Dispersive X-ray Fluorescence), UV-Vis-NIR (Ultraviolet-Visible-Near InfraRed Spectroscopy), and PL (Photoluminescence spectroscopy) to provide comprehensive characterization. The results show that Raman spectroscopy, particularly in the OH stretching region, is a useful tool for differentiating elbaite from liddicoatite, and this identification remains consistent regardless of crystal orientation. The fingerprint region in the Raman spectra, on the other hand, is orientation-dependent and can only differentiate the two species when detected in specific orientations. Furthermore, Paraíba-type tourmalines can be identified by visible-near infrared (Vis-NIR) spectroscopy, although not by Raman spectroscopy.

Thanks to their high chemical and mechanical stability, their diffusion in all types of detrital sediments and their complex structural formula (XY3Z6(T6O18)(BO3)3V3W), tourmalines have attracted strong interest in provenance studies since, from their chemical composition, it is possible to reconstruct the source rocks in ancient sediments. Dravite and schorl, belonging to the alkali subgroup 1, are the most abundant tourmaline species, and they have different Y-site compositions in the unit cell: dravite has more magnesium, while schorl has a higher iron content. For this reason, it is important to measure the Mg–Fe relative content in order to classify the analysed tourmalines in the dravite–schorl series. Raman spectroscopy is a suitable technique as it allows quick and easy measurements that provide chemical and structural information on tourmalines with a high spatial resolution, thus allowing analysis of small grains that could be found in sediments. In this work, we correlated the relative Mg–Fe content (x = Mg/(Mg + Fe)) in different tourmaline samples from the dravite–schorl series ((Formula presented.)) with variations in Raman spectrum parameters in order to find a model for quick tourmaline identification useful for provenance studies. The chemical compositions of the analysed tourmalines are obtained by scanning electron microscope coupled with energy-dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS). Raman measurements with a portable spectrometer have also been performed in order to evaluate our results for in situ applications.

Epidote group minerals are one of the three most abundant kinds of heavy minerals in orogenic sediments, the other two being amphibole and garnet. They resist diagenesis better than amphibole and resist weathering in soils better than garnet. Their chemical composition and optical properties vary markedly and systematically with temperature and pressure conditions during growth. Useful information on the metamorphic grade of source rocks can thus be obtained by provenance analysis. In this study, we combine optical, SEM–EDS, and Raman analyses of nine standard crystals of epidote group minerals collected from different rock units exposed in the European Alps and Apennines and develop a Raman library for efficient discrimination of epidote, clinozoisite, zoisite, and allanite by establishing clear user-oriented relationships among optical properties, chemical composition, and Raman fingerprint. This new library allows us to distinguish and reliably determine, directly from their Raman spectrum, the chemical compositions of epidote group minerals during routine heavy mineral analyses of sand/sandstone and silt/siltstone samples down to the size of a few microns. The validity of the approach is illustrated by its application to 41 Bengal Fan turbidites collected from five cores during IODP Expedition 354 and ranging in grain size from medium sand to fine silt.

Asbestos inhalation is associated with fatal respiratory diseases and raises concerns from the perspective of workplace safety and environmental impacts. Asbestos and asbestos-like minerals naturally occur in rocks and may become airborne when outcrops or soils are disturbed by anthropic activities. In situ detection of these minerals is a crucial step for the risk evaluation of natural sites. We assess here whether a portable Raman spectrometer (pRS) may be used in the identification of asbestos and asbestos-like minerals at the mining front during exploitation. pRS performance was tested at three geologically different mining sites in Italy and New Caledonia and compared with a high-resolution micro-Raman spectrometer (HRS). About 80% of the overall in situ analyses at the mining front were successfully identified by pRS, even when intermixed phases or strongly disaggregated and altered samples were analyzed. Chrysotile and tremolite asbestos, asbestos-like antigorite, and balangeroite were correctly detected during surveys. The major difficulties faced during in situ pRS measurements were fluorescence emission and focussing the laser beam on non-cohesive bundles of fibers. pRS is adequate for discriminating asbestos and asbestos-like minerals in situ. pRS may support risk assessment of mining sites to better protect workers and environment.

Amphiboles are an important family of rock forming minerals, whose identification is crucial in provenance studies as well as in many other fields of geology, archaeology and environmental sciences. This study is aimed to find a quick way to characterize Ca-amphiboles in the tremolite (Ca2Mg5Si8O22(OH)2)–ferro–actinolite (Ca2Fe5Si8O22(OH)2) series. Raman spectroscopy is established as technique to perform non-destructive and quick analysis, with micrometric resolution, able to give the composition in terms of Mg/(Mg + Fe2+) ratio. To exploit the method, a preliminary characterization is performed by Scanning Electron Microscopy coupled with Energy-dispersed X-ray Spectroscopy (SEM-EDS). Two independent methods to evaluate the composition from the Raman data (aiming to an accuracy of about 5%), using the low-wavenumbers part of the spectrum and the OH stretching bands, are developed. The application of the proposed method to micro-Raman mappings and the possible use of handheld Raman spectroscopy to have compositional information on Ca-amphiboles are discussed.

The crystal structure of jervisite, ideally NaScSi2O6, was refined using single-crystal X-ray data collected using a crystal from the Seula quarry (Baveno, Verbano-Cusio-Ossola province, Italy). The refinement was carried out in the C2/c space group giving the following unit-cell dimensions: a 1⁄4 9.8478(2) Å, b 1⁄4 9.0575(1) Å, c 1⁄4 5.3409(3) Å, b 1⁄4 106.87(2)8, and V 1⁄4 455.89(2) Å3for Z 1⁄4 4. The previous crystal structure, refined using data from a synthetic analogue and a natural sample, was confirmed and conforms with that of aegirine. The bond-valence calculation and the refined occupancy of the M1 and M2 sites confirm the cation distribution adopted in the empirical formula. Raman spectroscopy and refractive index measurements were also performed, and the morphology was studied in order to provide a complete description of this Sc-bearing Na pyroxene.

We report results from FE-SEM-EDS, geochemical, mineralogical analyses and Raman spectroscopy of pottery of bucket-shaped ceramic from Rogaland (southwestern Norway) dated between the 5th and 6th Century. The study reveals a very rare pottery composition including asbestos-group minerals and an unusual enrichment in compatible elements like Cr (8-27. × Post Archean average shale (PAS), McLennan et al., 2006), Ni (2-8. × normal shale) and Co (2-3. × PAS). X-Rray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy could pinpoint that Ni is introduced by specific Ni-rich talc mineral and chlorite minerals and Cr occurs in a rare Cr-rich talc, and possibly in a Cr-chlorite, these minerals are the most abundant in the pottery, which is supported by strong enrichment in Mg (10-20. × PAS). The addition of Mg, Cr, Ni and Co and other compatible trace elements is to our current knowledge not caused by anthropogenic activity but related to the used materials, which are alteration products of mafic and ultramafic rocks or genetically related to mafic and ultramafic rocks. Rocks of this type are exposed in vicinity of the sampling areas in a region called Karmøy, hosting a world famous ophiolite complex, which is identified as the major source for the mafic and ultramafic component, as the next succession of a similar composition is far further north located in Norway and a number of rock types on Karmøy matches the chemical composition of the pottery. The here reported composition is spectacular and extremely rare - if ever found - in pottery. Our study shows that unusual material sources have been used in pottery production, and this opens for discussion whether the materials were deliberately selected by the manufacturers, thereby expressing a specific social function, in a time period where more functional clay types and additives, and certainly functional and sufficient for use in pottery, where abundant in areas of Rogaland closer to where the pots were found.
