Abstract

During the last decade, additive manufacturing has become increasingly popular for rapid prototyping, but has remained relatively marginal beyond the scope of prototyping when it comes to applications with tight tolerance specifications, such as in aerospace. Despite a strong desire to supplant many aerospace structures with printed builds, additive manufacturing has largely remained limited to prototyping, tooling, fixtures, and non-critical components. There are numerous fundamental challenges inherent to additive processing to be addressed before this promise is realized. One ubiquitous challenge across all AM motifs is to develop processing-property relationships through precise, in situ monitoring coupled with formal methods and feedback control. We suggest a significant component of this vision is a set of semantic layers within 3D printing files relevant to the desired material specifications. This semantic layer provides the feedback laws of the control system, which then evaluates the component during processing and intelligently evolves the build parameters within boundaries defined by semantic specifications. This evaluation and correction loop requires on-the-fly coupling of finite element analysis and topology optimization. The required parameters for this analysis are all extracted from the semantic layer and can be modified in situ to satisfy the global specifications. Therefore, the representation of what is printed changes during the printing process to compensate for eventual imprecision or drift arising during the manufacturing process.

This project links data from the National Violent Death Reporting System on people who took their lives in Utah in 2014 and 2015 with data on 1) the decedents’ hospital visit history from 2011-2015, 2) whether they could pass a criminal background check for legal firearm possession, 3) whether they ever had or applied for a Utah Concealed Firearm Permit, and 4) (for firearm suicides only) results of a search by the federal bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) on when and by whom the suicide gun was purchased.

18. The Number and Type of Private Firearms in the United States.

Abstract

Since 2015, tens of millions of guns have entered the U.S. market. Using household survey data, we found that the number of firearms owned by U.S. adults increased from 265 million in 2015 to 326 million in 2019. Over this period, the proportion of firearms that were handguns increased slightly, from 42 to 44 percent, continuing a long-standing trend. Seventy percent of handguns were pistols (102 million) and 30 percent revolvers (43 million); 5.7 million were stored in cars. Sixty-three percent of long guns were rifles (113 million); 37 percent were shotguns (65 million). Of the 40 percent of rifles that were semiautomatic, half were described as military-style rifles (23 million) and half as hunting rifles (22 million). Gun ownership was highly concentrated: 87 percent of all firearms were owned by the half of gun owners who owned more than two guns. Abstract

Hierarchically-porous, rigid inorganic structures have attracted appreciable interest in a wide range of applications, including catalysis, filtration, sensing, and energy storage/harvesting. Naturally-occurring, hierarchically-porous, rigid assemblies with a wide range of three-dimensional (3D) structures are generated by diatoms (photosynthetic aquatic microorganisms); that is, each of the tens of thousands of diatom species forms a macro-to-mesoporous, silica-bearing cell wall (frustule) with a particular, highly-reproducible 3D morphology. We have recently demonstrated that such intricate biosilica structures can be converted, without loss of 3D morphology, into high surface area (>1300 m2/g) macro-to-microporous carbon. Here we demonstrate, for the first time, how the chemical tailoring of such hierarchically-porous, carbon-converted, 3D biogenic structures can result in a high degree of enzyme loading for rapid flow-through catalysis. Two approaches have been developed for enriching such structures with carboxylic acid groups: i) dendritic amplification of partially-oxidized C replicas, and ii) electrochemical Au deposition followed by self-assembly of a carboxylic acid-bearing surface layer. The terminal carboxylic acid groups were then used for electrostatic attachment of a protamine (PA) modified derivative of the model enzyme, glucose oxidase (GOx-PA). In a flow-through system, the GOx-PA-loaded, diatom-derived microscale structures displayed a glucose consumption rate more than 80% faster than for GOx-PA-loaded C black and Au nanoparticles. The rapid flow-through catalysis of the carbon and gold-bearing frustule replicas was enabled by the open 3D morphology of the starting diatom silica templates, along with the enhanced surface area and high enzyme loading resulting from the chemical conversion and surface functionalization processes. Abstract

A combined conformal coating and gas/solid reaction process has been used for the first time to convert porous anodic alumina templates into robust, freestanding, multi-wall titania nanotube (MWTNT) arrays that resist appreciable nanotube bundling upon drying. A sol–gel infiltration process was first used to apply a thin conformal titania coating to the alumina templates. After selective etching to generate a gap between the template and the titania coating, exposed alumina was converted into nanocrystalline titania viareaction with titanium tetrafluoride gas and then with humid oxygen. After selective dissolution of residual aluminum-bearing phases and drying, freestanding, non-agglomerated, well-aligned MWTNT arrays were generated (i.e., with coating-derived inner titania tubes resting inside reaction-derived outer titania tubes). When incorporated as aligned electrodes in dye-sensitized solar cells, the dye loading and power conversion efficiencies were higher by factors of 2.2 and 1.8, respectively, than for solar cells with single-wall titania nanotube array electrodes. By controlling the conditions used for alumina template formation, sol–gel coating, and gas/solid reaction, this hybrid process may be used to generate robust, uniformly aligned MWTNT arrays with dimensions and functional chemistries tailored for a variety of electrical, optical, chemical, or biochemical applications.

Abstract

An aqueous, protein‐enabled (biomimetic), layer‐by‐layer titania deposition process is developed, for the first time, to convert aligned‐nanochannel templates into high‐aspect‐ratio, aligned nanotube arrays with thin (34 nm) walls composed of co‐continuous networks of pores and titania nanocrystals (15 nm ave. size). Alumina templates with aligned open nanochannels are exposed in an alternating fashion to aqueous protamine‐bearing and titania precursor‐bearing (Ti(IV) bis‐ammonium‐lactato‐dihydroxide, TiBALDH) solutions. The ability of protamine to bind to alumina andtitania, andto induce the formation of a Ti–O‐bearing coating upon exposure to the TiBALDH precursor, enables the layer‐by‐layer deposition of a conformal protamine/Ti–O‐bearing coating on the nanochannel surfaces within the porous alumina template. Subsequent protamine pyrolysis yields coatings composed of co‐continuous networks of pores and titania nanoparticles. Selective dissolution of the underlying alumina template through the porous coatingthen yields freestanding, aligned, porous‐wall titania nanotube arrays. The interconnected pores within the nanotube walls allow enhanced loading of functional molecules (such as a Ru‐based N719 dye), whereas the interconnected titania nanoparticles enable the high‐aspect‐ratio, aligned nanotube arrays to be used as electrodes (as demonstrated for dye‐sensitized solar cells with power conversion efficiencies of 5.2 ± 0.4%).

Abstract

Because a single product is no longer sufficient for success, businesses must follow the divide and rule dictum of market segmentation that calls for thinking of the market as having different parts and then attempting to serve those parts in different ways. Moreover, marketing to medium-to-large businesses is very different from marketing to consumers. Because these enterprises serve a broad array of customers, their needs are more diverse than are those of consumers or small companies. And, because their product technology is often more complex and their decision-making structures more complicated, a number of individuals are usually involved in the buying decisions. Market-driven Business Segmentation (MBS) has been developed specifically to handle such complexities of business-to-business markets in the 1990s, offering an effective compromise between ignoring customer differences and treating every customer as unique overlay to these traditional approaches and as a fundamental organizing principle of a business. The market-driven segmentation framework is a highly adaptable, multidimensional model for segmenting business markets designed to capture the complexity of the business environment. It systematically identifies the needs customers seek to satisfy when buying and is applicable to a diverse range of product and service categories, as well as to mature and emerging markets both domestic and foreign.

47. Design of Rapid Fixed‐Bed Adsorption Tests for Nonconstant Diffusivities

Abstract

A rapid small‐scale column test (RSSCT) that uses a smaller adsorbent particle is used to simulate a five‐month pilot plant adsorption study in several days. The RSSCT is a small‐scale physical model of a full‐scale fixed‐bed such that it gives a performance identical to the full‐scale plant when the effluent profiles are plotted as the bed volumes are fed. A mathematical model that, includes axial dispersion, intraparticle pore and surface diffusion, and liquid‐phase mass transfer resistance is used to scale down the RSSCT from the pilot plant operation without extensive isotherm and kinetic data. This study presents evidence that the surface diffusivities are not necessarily constant with adsorbent particle radius and presents general scaling equations for use under these conditions.
