CO dehydrogenase (CODH) from the Gram-negative bacterium Oligotropha carboxidovorans is a complex metalloenzyme from the xanthine oxidase family of molybdenum-containing enzymes, bearing a unique binuclear Mo-S-Cu active site in addition to two [2Fe-2S] clusters (FeSI and FeSII) and one equivalent of FAD. CODH catalyzes the oxidation of CO to CO2 with the concomitant introduction of reducing equivalents into the quinone pool, thus enabling the organism to utilize CO as sole source of both carbon and energy. Using a variety of EPR monitored redox titrations and spectroelectrochemistry, we report the redox potentials of CO dehydrogenase at pH 7.2 namely MoVI/V, MoV/IV, FeSI2+/+, FeSII2+/+, FAD/FADH and FADH/FADH-. These potentials are systematically higher than the corresponding potentials seen for other members of the xanthine oxidase family of Mo enzymes, and are in line with CODH utilising the higher potential quinone pool as an electron acceptor instead of pyridine nucleotides. CODH is also active when immobilised on a modified Au working electrode as demonstrated by cyclic voltammetry in the presence of CO.

Lead-free organic–inorganic hybrid bismuth halides have been recognized as promising alternatives to lead-based perovskites for low-toxic and environmentally-friendly optoelectronic applications. These materials showcase unique optoelectronic properties, ascribed to their low-dimensional electronic structures, such as a long carrier lifetime, a strong quantum-well effect, self-trapped states, and good stability. However, there is still a lack of understanding of the structure dependency of these properties. Investigations of hybrid bismuth halides are thus highly urgent in the pursuit of developing functional optoelectronic devices utilizing these properties. Herein, we report a new one-dimensional (1D) polymeric organic–inorganic hybrid bismuth halide, PDABiI5 (PDA = 1,3-propane diammonium), which forms single crystals of centimeter size with a narrow optical bandgap of 1.77 eV. Interestingly, a reversible moisture-induced dimensional transformation was observed on 1D PDABiI5 through its conversion into 0D dimeric (PDA)2Bi2I10·2H2O, coming with a significant bandgap widening and photoluminescence shifts. This transformation is attributed to water molecules forming hydrogen bonds with the ammonium groups, promoting the deformation of Bi–I bonds from [BiI52−]n chains to edge-sharing [Bi2I10]4− dimers. This phenomenon presents exciting prospects for environmentally responsive device applications. Furthermore, optoelectronic characterizations demonstrated a long carrier lifetime exceeding 2 μs, a defect density of 1.49 × 1010 cm−3 and a high μτ product of 4.06 × 10−4 cm2 V−1. This work provides insights into the unique properties of PDABiI5 and (PDA)2Bi2I10·2H2O and their structure–property correlation, and offers promising avenues for the development of eco-friendly and functional optoelectronic devices. This study investigates the influence of ligand charge on transition energies in a series of CuN2S2 complexes based on dithiocarbazate Schiff base ligands using Cu K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and Kβ valence-to-core (VtC) X-ray emission spectroscopy (XES). By comparing the formally Cu(II) complexes [CuII(HL1)] (HL12− = dimethyl pentane-2,4-diylidenebis[carbonodithiohydrazonate]) and [CuII(HL2)] (HL22− = dibenzyl pentane-2,4-diylidenebis[carbonodithiohydrazonate]) and the formally Cu(III) complex [CuIII(L2)], distinct changes in transition energies are observed, primarily attributed to the metal oxidation state. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations demonstrate how an increased negative charge on the deprotonated L23− ligand stabilizes the Cu(III) center through enhanced charge donation, modulating the core transition energies. Overall, significant shifts to higher energies are noted upon metal oxidation, emphasizing the importance of scrutinizing ligand structure in XAS/VtC XES analysis. The data further support the redox-innocent role of the Schiff base ligands and underscore the criticality of ligand protonation levels in future spectroscopic studies, particularly for catalytic intermediates. The combined XAS-VtC XES methodology validates the Cu(III) oxidation state assignment while offering insights into ligand protonation effects on core-level spectroscopic transitions. Homocubane, a highly strained cage hydrocarbon, contains two very different positions for the introduction of a nitrogen atom into the skeleton, e. g. a position 1 exchange results in a tertiary amine whereas position 9 yields a secondary amine. Herein reported is the synthesis of 9‐azahomocubane along with associated structural characterization, physical property analysis and chemical reactivity. Not only is 9‐azahomocubane readily synthesized, and found to be stable as predicted, the basicity of the secondary amine was observed to be significantly lower than the structurally related azabicyclo[2.2.1]heptane, although similar to 1‐azahomocubane. Three Schiff base ligands, NQ, CQ and HQ, were prepared from the reaction of quinoline-3-carbohydrazide with 2-nitrobenzaldehyde, 2-chlorobenzaldehyde and 2,4-dihydroxybenzaldehyde, respectively, and were investigated for their coordination to Cu (II), Ni(II), Co(II), Cd(II), Cr(III) and Fe(III) chlorides. The NQ preparation and the X-ray structure of NQ and CQ, as well as the transition metal complexes of NQ, CQ and HQ, were reported for the first time. FTIR, 1H-NMR, magnetic susceptibility and elemental analysis were used to study the coordination of ligands to the metal ions. Based on the magnetic susceptibility and elemental analysis results, octahedral structures of the complexes such as [CuL2Cl(OH)], [FeL2Cl2(OH)] and [CoL2Cl(OH)] were proposed for L = NQ, CQ and HQ. The relatively large Cd(II) exhibited [CdL3(OH)2]. The FTIR study revealed that NQ and CQ are coordinated to the metal ions via azomethine nitrogen and carbonyl oxygen while HQ through azomethine nitrogen and phenolic oxygen. Despite the high solvation power of DMSO solvent in 1H-NMR experiments, the azomethine HC=N peak at 9.3 ppm is the most affected by complexation with metal ions. On the other hand, quinoline nitrogen seems to be a weaker coordinating site than the azomethine nitrogen. The HQ ligand, containing phenolic groups, and its complexes with Cu and Ni were found to have inhibitory effects on human breast adenocarcinoma MCF-7 and human chronic myelogenous leukemia K562. Nevertheless, metal ions did not exhibit a significant synergistic effect on the antiproliferative activity of the ligands investigated. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
