A new species of the Sub-Saharan spider genus Quamtana Huber, 2003 is described that has been collected in garden centers in Poland and the UK. Its closest known relative is probably Q. lotzi Huber, 2003, known from Free State Province in South Africa. Working on the premise that placing species in time and space is the fundamental task of taxonomy, and acknowledging that we cannot provide biologically meaningful spatial information for this species, we prefer open nomenclature to make this species known to science without formally describing it, using the unique provisional name Quamtana sp. ZFMK Ar 24490 aff. lotzi. We argue that the judicious use of open nomenclature can serve to improve the quality of species lists, reducing the noise in large-scale analyses of biodiversity data. We expand this argument to ‘fragmentary’ species descriptions in general, such as single-sex descriptions in large genera with many male-only and female-only descriptions. Not every taxonomic act allowed by the Code is necessarily beneficial. Under certain conditions, the informal description of a putatively new species may serve science better than a formal description based on inadequate material or data.

Micropholcus Deeleman-Reinhold & Prinsen, 1987 is one of only two Pholcidae genera known to occur both in the Old and New Worlds. However, there are major morphological and ecological differences among geographically separate groups of species, and it was mainly molecular data that have resulted in our current view of uniting all these species into a single genus. In the Old World, only four species have previously been described. Here, current knowledge about Old World Micropholcus is reviewed, redescribing three of the four previously known species, and describing twelve new species, originating from Saudi Arabia (M. dhahran Huber, sp. nov., M. harajah Huber, sp. nov., M. alfara Huber, sp. nov., M. abha Huber, sp. nov., M. tanomah Huber, sp. nov., M. bashayer Huber, sp. nov., M. maysaan Huber, sp. nov.), Oman (M. darbat Huber, sp. nov., M. shaat Huber, sp. nov.), Morocco (M. ghar Huber, sp. nov., M. khenifra Huber, Lecigne & Lips, sp. nov.), and the Philippines (M. bukidnon Huber, sp. nov.). We provide an exploratory species delimitation analysis based on CO1 barcodes, extensive SEM data, and first records of Acroceridae (Diptera) larvae in Pholcidae, extracted from book lungs.

In this paper, we discuss technologies and approaches based on Knowledge Graphs (KGs) that enable the management of inline human interventions in AI-assisted manufacturing processes in Industry 5.0 under potentially changing conditions in order to maintain or improve the overall system performance. Whereas KG-based systems are commonly based on a static view with their structure fixed at design time, we argue that the dynamic challenge of inline Human-AI (H-AI) collaboration in industrial settings calls for a late shaping design principle. In contrast to early shaping, which determines the system's behavior at design time in a fine granular manner, late shaping is a coarse-to-fine approach that leaves more space for fine-tuning, adaptation and integration of human intelligence at runtime. In this context we discuss approaches and lessons learned from the European manufacturing project Teaming.AI, https://www.teamingai-project.eu/, addressing general challenges like the modeling of domain expertise with particular focus on vertical knowledge integration, as well as challenges linked to an industrial KG of choice, such as its dynamic population and the late shaping of KG embeddings as the foundation of relational machine learning models which have emerged as an effective tool for exploiting graph-structured data to infer new insights.

Ninetinae are a group of small and short-legged pholcids that are largely restricted to dry habitats where they lead reclusive lives in and under objects on the ground. They have long been rare in collections and poorly studied. The genus Ibotyporanga Mello-Leitão, 1944 previously contained five species: four from the Brazilian Cerrado and Caatinga biomes, and one from northern Venezuela. Based on recent focused collecting in Brazil and northern Colombia, we describe 19 new species, all based on males and females: Ibotyporanga ziruma Huber sp. nov., I. walekeru Huber sp. nov., I. piojo Huber sp. nov., I. itatim Huber sp. nov., I. xakriaba Huber sp. nov., I. xique Huber sp. nov., I. camarai Huber sp. nov., I. kanoe Huber sp. nov., I. imale Huber sp. nov., I. sertao Huber sp. nov., I. guanambi Huber sp. nov., I. capivara Huber sp. nov., I. payaya Huber sp. nov., I. tuxa Huber sp. nov., I. atikum Huber sp. nov., I. kiriri Huber sp. nov., I. ouro Huber sp. nov., I. itajubaquara Huber sp. nov. and I. canudos Huber sp. nov. In addition, we describe the previously unknown females of I. diroa Huber & Brescovit, 2003, and I. ramosae Huber & Brescovit, 2003, and present comprehensive SEM data of eight species. We analyze CO1 barcodes of 41 Ibotyporanga specimens representing 21 described and one undescribed species. Genetic distances among specimens and a species delimitation analysis suggest that some nominal species may in fact represent two or more species. A first morphological cladistic analysis of the genus strongly supports the monophyly of Ibotyporanga and suggests several clades within the genus, including one that is characterized by a strong elongation of the male palpal procursus. Geographically, the genus shows a disjunct distribution in Brazil and northern South America, separated by the Amazon biome. While plesiomorphic taxa (with a short procursus) are found in both regions, derived taxa (with an elongated procursus) are limited to Brazil. Species distribution modeling suggests that Ibotyporanga might also occur in poorly sampled regions of Ecuador, Peru, and Venezuela. In addition, a strong sampling bias towards the proximity of access routes suggests that the genus is much more diverse even in Brazil and Colombia. Two karyotyped species shared the diploid number of 2n♂ = 30 and an X1X2X3Y sex chromosome system.

Assessing Robotic Process Automation (RPA) projects is challenging, especially for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) with limited resources. The most common approach, cost-benefit analysis, measures the financial success of a project, but it does not capture all RPA benefits, which can lead to erroneous decisions about starting, continuing, delaying, or stopping an RPA project. This research presents a novel RPA project assessment model that combines a benefits approach with the balanced scorecard (BSC) framework. The model identifies RPA benefits from the scientific literature and classifies them into four BSC indicators: financial, business process improvement, customer satisfaction, and learning and development. SMEs can easily use the model by comparing expected and actual benefits to make quick and holistic decisions. The model's simplicity, ease of use, and ability to reveal both monetary and non-monetary RPA benefits make it a valuable tool for SMEs.

Abstract Asthma is the most common chronic respiratory disease among school-going adolescents worldwide. However, the burden of severe asthma is highest in Sub-Saharan Africa. This study aimed to explore teachers’ perceptions of asthma care across six African countries. We conducted focus group discussions (FGDs) using a semi-structured interview guide. Interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed verbatim and analysed thematically. FGDs were conducted in Kumasi(Ghana), Blantyre (Malawi), Lagos (Nigeria), Durban (South Africa), Kampala (Uganda), and Harare (Zimbabwe) between 01 November 2020 and 30 June 2021. We identified two key themes related to asthma care; barriers to asthma care and suggestions to improve the care of adolescents with asthma. Barriers reported by teachers included a lack of knowledge and skills among themselves, adolescents, and caregivers. In addition, some traditional beliefs of teachers on asthma exacerbated challenges with asthma care in schools. Regarding suggestions, most teachers identified a need for all-inclusive asthma training programmes for teachers, adolescents and caregivers, focusing on acute episodes and mitigating triggers. Utilising teachers with personal experiences with asthma to advocate and support these initiatives was suggested. Further suggestions included the need for annual screening to enable early identification of adolescents with asthma and clarify restrictions on teachers administering asthma medications. Teachers across African schools identify multiple barriers to asthma care. Structured school education programs and annual asthma screening are key to addressing some barriers to care.

Daddy long-legs spiders are common inhabitants of tropical and subtropical caves around the globe. Numerous species have evolved troglomorphisms, including the loss of body pigments and eyes. Here we describe the first troglomorphic pholcids from Australia and Réunion. Belisana coblynau Huber & Clark, sp. nov. was extracted from mining boreholes in the arid West Australian Pilbara region. It represents a genus that is widespread in tropical forests of South and Southeast Asia, reaching the tropical north and east of Australia. Belisana coblynau is thus presumably a relict whose epigean ancestor lived in the area before the aridification of Australia starting in the early Cenozoic. Buitinga ifrit Huber & Cazanove, sp. nov. was collected in Grotte de La Tortue on Réunion, one of the oldest lava tubes on the island (~300,000 years). Congeneric species are known from East Africa, and the genus does not seem to have reached Madagascar. Since Pholcidae do not balloon, the now extinct epigean ancestor of Buitinga ifrit probably reached the island by highly accidental means (such as rafts or storms).

Abstract Background The risk of developing late radiotoxicity after radiotherapy in patients with high chromosomal radiosensitivity after radiotherapy could potentially be higher compared to the risk in patients with average radiosensitivity. In case of extremely high radiosensitivity, dose reduction may be appropriate. Some rheumatic diseases (RhD), including connective tissue diseases (CTDs) appear to be associated with higher radiosensitivity. The question arises as to whether patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) also generally have a higher radiosensitivity and whether certain parameters could indicate clues to high radiosensitivity in RA patients which would then need to be further assessed before radiotherapy. Methods Radiosensitivity was determined in 136 oncological patients with RhD, 44 of whom were RA patients, and additionally in 34 non-oncological RA patients by three-colour fluorescence in situ hybridization (FiSH), in which lymphocyte chromosomes isolated from peripheral blood are analysed for their chromosomal aberrations of an unirradiated and an with 2 Gy irradiated blood sample. The chromosomal radiosensitivity was determined by the average number of breaks per metaphase. In addition, correlations between certain RA- or RhD-relevant disease parameters or clinical features such as the disease activity score 28 and radiosensitivity were assessed. Results Some oncological patients with RhD, especially those with connective tissue diseases have significantly higher radiosensitivity compared with oncology patients without RhD. In contrast, the mean radiosensitivity of the oncological patients with RA and other RhD and the non-oncological RA did not differ. 14 of the 44 examined oncological RA-patients (31.8%) had a high radiosensitivity which is defined as ≥ 0.5 breaks per metaphase. No correlation of laboratory parameters with radiosensitivity could be established. Conclusions It would be recommended to perform radiosensitivity testing in patients with connective tissue diseases in general. We did not find a higher radiosensitivity in RA patients. In the group of RA patients with an oncological disease, a higher percentage of patients showed higher radiosensitivity, although the average radiosensitivity was not high.

Activity recognition combined with artificial intelligence is a vital area of research, ranging across diverse domains, from sports and healthcare to smart homes. In the industrial domain, and the manual assembly lines, the emphasis shifts to human–machine interaction and thus to human activity recognition (HAR) within complex operational environments. Developing models and methods that can reliably and efficiently identify human activities, traditionally just categorized as either simple or complex activities, remains a key challenge in the field. Limitations of the existing methods and approaches include their inability to consider the contextual complexities associated with the performed activities. Our approach to address this challenge is to create different levels of activity abstractions, which allow for a more nuanced comprehension of activities and define their underlying patterns. Specifically, we propose a new hierarchical taxonomy for human activity abstraction levels based on the context of the performed activities that can be used in HAR. The proposed hierarchy consists of five levels, namely atomic, micro, meso, macro, and mega. We compare this taxonomy with other approaches that divide activities into simple and complex categories as well as other similar classification schemes and provide real-world examples in different applications to demonstrate its efficacy. Regarding advanced technologies like artificial intelligence, our study aims to guide and optimize industrial assembly procedures, particularly in uncontrolled non-laboratory environments, by shaping workflows to enable structured data analysis and highlighting correlations across various levels throughout the assembly progression. In addition, it establishes effective communication and shared understanding between researchers and industry professionals while also providing them with the essential resources to facilitate the development of systems, sensors, and algorithms for custom industrial use cases that adapt to the level of abstraction.

Meta-analyses have become indispensable in the behavioral sciences, combining and summarizing data from multiple studies. While they offer many advantages (e.g., increased power, higher generality, and resolving conflicting findings), they currently only provide a snapshot at a given point. In active research areas, frequent meta-analytic updates are necessary to incorporate new evidence. We propose guidelines for live, dynamic meta-analyses and introduce an accessible tool using the R environment. Our app, powered by the Shiny package, enables the meta-analyst to integrate evidence interactively as an update of an existing meta-analysis or from scratch (i.e., a new meta-analysis). By embracing dynamic meta-analyses and leveraging modern tools, researchers can ensure up-to-date meta-analyses in their respective fields.

Abstract Species are the fundamental units of life and evolution. Their recognition is essential for science and society. Molecular methods have been increasingly used for the identification of animal species, despite several challenges. Here, we explore with genomic data from nine animal lineages a set of nuclear markers, namely metazoan‐level universal single‐copy orthologs (metazoan USCOs), for their use in species delimitation. Our data sets include arthropods and vertebrates. We use various data assembly strategies and use coalescent‐based species inference as well as population admixture analyses and phenetic methods. We demonstrate that metazoan USCOs distinguish well closely related morphospecies and consistently outperform classical mitochondrial DNA barcoding in discriminating closely related species in different animal taxa, as judged by comparison with morphospecies delimitations. USCOs overcome the general shortcomings of mitochondrial DNA barcodes, and due to standardization across Metazoa, also those of other approaches. They accurately assign samples not only to lower but also to higher taxonomic levels. Metazoan USCOs provide a powerful and unifying framework for DNA‐based species delimitation and taxonomy in animals and their employment could result in a more efficient use of research data and resources.

The Pholcidae subfamily Smeringopinae has been revised extensively over the last decade, and most of its currently eight genera can now be placed with some confidence in the phylogeny of the family. A notable exception has been the endemic Seychellois genus Cenemus Saaristo, 2001. Morphologically, the genus is mainly characterized by plesiomorphies, which resulted in weakly supported and unstable positions in previous cladistic analyses. Molecular data have not previously been available. Here we revise the morphology of the type species Cenemus culiculus (Simon, 1898), including first SEM photos, and present the first molecular data for the genus. Morphology and molecules continue to give conflicting results regarding the sister taxon of Cenemus, but our analyses strongly support a position of the genus within the northern group of Smeringopinae (Northern Africa and the Mediterranean to India) rather than in the southern group (Subsahara Africa). This supports the idea that Cenemus is an ancient taxon, dating back to the breakup of Gondwana, between the separation of the Mascarene platform from Madagascar (~85 mya) and its separation from India (~60 mya). In addition, we present first molecular data for the recently established Smeringopinae genus Maghreba Huber, 2022, which is consistently resolved as sister to Crossopriza Simon, 1893; we present molecular evidence for the polyphyly of Holocnemus Simon, 1873, supporting previous morphological evidence; and we present an annotated list of the Pholcidae of the Seychelles, most of which are supposedly recent human introductions.

Cells use pH gradients to drive the synthesis of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), but the physicochemical mechanisms that can produce pH gradients in non-equilibrium settings are poorly understood. The authors here theoretically and experimentally investigate the formation of a pH gradient in an acid-base reaction system, driven by a heat flow, providing insights on how crude non-equilibrium systems can feed chemical gradients exploitable by life.

RPA’s (Robotic Process Automation) usage in organizations has rapidly increased in recent years; as a result, companies have developed high expectations from this technology. However, according to Ernst & Young (E&Y), 30-50% of observed RPA projects initially fail and reveal several risks, which lead to investment losses. Consequently, the RPA project is prematurely retired, and the company is back to the manual process. This premature retirement is mainly because of wrong process selection and the not sufficient company automation (RPA) maturity. Therefore, this paper will introduce the concept of an RPA Portfolio, which will assess the complexity of business processes with a company’s automation (RPA) maturity. The RPA Portfolio is a new innovative concept to simplify and visualize the business process selection for RPA projects, and will help to introduce successfully the right RPA projects.

The southern South American genus Guaranita includes tiny spiders (body length ~1 mm) that lead reclusive lives under ground-objects and run rapidly when disturbed. As a result, they have been poorly collected and studied. Here we report on a recent collection of Guaranita spiders from Argentina, describing one new species (G. auadae Huber sp. nov.) and the previously unknown female of G. dobby Torres et al., 2016. In addition, we provide CO1 barcodes for all (now five) known species, first SEM data, and first chromosome data for the genus. The diploid number of Guaranita goloboffi Huber, 2000 (2n♂ = 11) is among the lowest in araneomorph spiders with monocentric chromosome structure.

Background: Cancer patients are highly prone to infectious diseases. While undergoing antineoplastic treatment, the risk of severe symptoms upon infection increases, necessitating efficient protective measures, such as vaccination. For patients receiving radiotherapy, there is no specific information about humoral immunity. During the COVID-19 pandemic, serial antibody measurements were therefore offered to cancer patients, following SARS-CoV-2 vaccination while obtaining radiotherapy. Methods: Out of 74 enrolled patients, 46 met the inclusion criteria. Two cohorts were allocated, depending on an association with chemotherapy or pure radiotherapy. An additional healthy control cohort of 16 healthcare workers was enrolled. All participants followed a two-fold BNT162b2 vaccine schedule. SARS-CoV-2 binding antibodies were measured serially in a 7-day cycle for 35 days and over the long-term, using the Elecsys® Anti-SARS-CoV-2 immunoassay. Results: Cancer patients under pure radiotherapy have a comparable humoral vaccination response and long-term persistency of antibodies to healthy controls. Patients receiving additional chemotherapy show a significantly delayed immune response and decreased antibody titers. The vaccine was well tolerated in all cohorts. Conclusions: Pure radiotherapy in cancer patients does not interfere with the vaccine-induced humoral immune response or other immunogenetic aspects, whereas previous or simultaneous chemotherapy does. Findings are of particular relevance for future epidemic or pandemic scenarios.

Abstract Gastro-intestinal stromal tumors and acute myeloid leukemia induced by activating stem cell factor receptor tyrosine kinase (KIT) mutations are highly malignant. Less clear is the role of KIT mutations in the context of breast cancer. Treatment success of KIT-induced cancers is still unsatisfactory because of primary or secondary resistance to therapy. Mouse models offer essential platforms for studies on molecular disease mechanisms in basic cancer research. In the course of the Munich N-ethyl-N-nitrosourea (ENU) mutagenesis program a mouse line with inherited polycythemia was established. It carries a base-pair exchange in the Kit gene leading to an amino acid exchange at position 824 in the activation loop of KIT. This KIT variant corresponds to the N822K mutation found in human cancers, which is associated with imatinib-resistance. C3H Kit N824K/WT mice develop hyperplasia of interstitial cells of Cajal and retention of ingesta in the cecum. In contrast to previous Kit-mutant models, we observe a benign course of gastrointestinal pathology associated with prolonged survival. Female mutants develop mammary carcinomas at late onset and subsequent lung metastasis. The disease model complements existing oncology research platforms. It allows for addressing the role of KIT mutations in breast cancer and identifying genetic and environmental modifiers of disease progression.

Haplogyne araneomorphs are a diverse spider clade. Their karyotypes are usually predominated by biarmed (i.e., metacentric and submetacentric) chromosomes and have a specific sex chromosome system, X1X2Y. These features are probably ancestral for haplogynes. Nucleolus organizer regions (NORs) spread frequently from autosomes to sex chromosomes in these spiders. This study focuses on pholcids (Pholcidae), a highly diverse haplogyne family. Despite considerable recent progress in pholcid cytogenetics, knowledge on many clades remains insufficient including the most species-rich pholcid genus, Pholcus Walckenaer, 1805. To characterize the karyotype differentiation of Pholcus in Europe, we compared karyotypes, sex chromosomes, NORs, and male meiosis of seven species [P. alticeps Spassky, 1932; P. creticus Senglet, 1971; P. dentatus Wunderlich, 1995; P. fuerteventurensis Wunderlich, 1992; P. phalangioides (Fuesslin, 1775); P. opilionoides (Schrank, 1781); P. silvai Wunderlich, 1995] representing the dominant species groups in this region. The species studied show several features ancestral for Pholcus, namely the 2n♂ = 25, the X1X2Y system, and a karyotype predominated by biarmed chromosomes. Most taxa have a large acrocentric NOR-bearing pair, which evolved from a biarmed pair by a pericentric inversion. In some lineages, the acrocentric pair reverted to biarmed. Closely related species often differ in the morphology of some chromosome pairs, probably resulting from pericentric inversions and/or translocations. Such rearrangements have been implicated in the formation of reproductive barriers. While the X1 and Y chromosomes retain their ancestral metacentric morphology, the X2 chromosome shows a derived (acrocentric or subtelocentric) morphology. Pairing of this element is usually modified during male meiosis. NOR patterns are very diverse. The ancestral karyotype of Pholcus contained five or six terminal NORs including three X chromosome-linked loci. The number of NORs has been frequently reduced during evolution. In the Macaronesian clade, there is only a single NOR-bearing pair. Sex chromosome-linked NORs are lost in Madeiran species and in P. creticus. Our study revealed two cytotypes in the synanthropic species P. phalangioides (Madeiran and Czech), which differ by their NOR pattern and chromosome morphology. In the Czech cytotype, the large acrocentric pair was transformed into a biarmed pair by pericentric inversion.

Abstract Background Pholcidae represent one of the largest and most diverse spider families and have been subject to various studies regarding behavior and reproductive biology. In contrast to the solid knowledge on phylogeny and general reproductive morphology, the primary male reproductive system is strongly understudied, as it has been addressed only for few species. Those studies however suggested a high diversity of sperm and seminal secretions across the family. To address this disparity and reconstruct the evolution of sperm traits, we investigate the primary male reproductive system of pholcid spiders by means of light, X-ray, and transmission electron microscopy using a comprehensive taxon sampling with 46 species from 33 genera, representing all five subfamilies. Results Our data show a high disparity of sperm morphology and seminal secretions within pholcids. We document several sperm characters that are unique for pholcids, such as a helical band (Pholcinae) or a lamellate posterior centriolar adjunct material (Modisiminae). Character mapping revealed several putative synapomorphies for individual taxa. With regard to sperm transfer forms, we found that synspermia occur only in the subfamily Ninetinae, whereas the other subfamilies have cleistospermia. In several species with cleistospermia, we demonstrate that spermatids remain fused until late stages of spermiogenesis before ultimately separating shortly before the coiling process. Additionally, we explored the previously hypothesized correlation between sperm size and minimum diameter of the spermophor in the male palpal organ. We show that synspermia differ strongly in size whereas cleistospermia are rather uniform, but neither transfer form is positively correlated with the diameter of the spermophor. Conclusions Our data revealed a dynamic evolution of sperm characters, with convergences across all subfamilies and a high level of homoplasy. The present diversity can be related to subfamily level and allows for assignments of specific subtypes of spermatozoa. Our observations support the idea that Ninetinae are an ancestral clade within Pholcidae that have retained synspermia and that synspermia represent the ancestral sperm transfer form of Pholcidae.

The North American-Caribbean genera Pholcophora Banks, 1896 and Tolteca Huber, 2000 are representatives of Ninetinae, a group of small, cryptic, and thus poorly known pholcid spiders. We present the first comprehensive revisions of the two genera, including extensive SEM data and descriptions of seven new species from Mexico (Pholcophora mazatlan Huber sp. nov., P. papanoa Huber sp. nov., P. tehuacan Huber sp. nov., Tolteca huahua Huber sp. nov., T. manzanillo Huber sp. nov., T. oaxaca Huber sp. nov., and T. sinnombre Huber sp. nov.). We add new CO1 sequences of nine species to previously published molecular data and use these for a preliminary analysis of relationships. We recover a North American-Caribbean clade including ‘true’ (mainland) Pholcophora, Tolteca (Mexico), and a Caribbean clade consisting of the genus Papiamenta Huber, 2000 (Curaçao) and Caribbean ‘Pholcophora’. First karyotype data for Tolteca (2n♂ = 13, X1X2Y and 15, X1X2Y, respectively) reveal a strong reduction of the number of chromosome pairs within the North American-Caribbean clade, and considerable karyotype differentiation among congeners. This agrees with considerable CO1 divergence among species of Tolteca but contrasts with very inconspicuous morphological divergence. Environmental niche analyses show that the widespread P. americana Banks, 1896 (western USA, SW Canada) occupies a very different niche than its Mexican congeners and other close relatives. Caribbean taxa also have a low niche overlap with ‘true’ Pholcophora and Tolteca, supporting the idea that Caribbean ‘Pholcophora’ are taxonomically misplaced.

Learning underlying patterns from sensory data is crucial in the Human Activity Recognition (HAR) task to avoid poor generalization when coping with unseen data. A key solution to such an issue is representation learning, which becomes essential when input signals contain activities with similar patterns or when patterns generated by different subjects for the same activity vary. To address these issues, we seek a solution to increase generalization by learning the underlying factors of each sensor signal. We develop a novel multi-channel asymmetric auto-encoder to recreate input signals precisely and extract indicative unsupervised futures. Further, we investigate the role of various activation functions in signal reconstruction to ensure the model preserves the patterns of each activity in the output. Our main contribution is that we propose a multi-task learning model to enhance representation learning through shared layers between signal reconstruction and the HAR task to improve the robustness of the model in coping with users not included in the training phase. The proposed model learns shared features between different tasks that are indeed the underlying factors of each input signal. We validate our multi-task learning model using several publicly available HAR datasets, UCI-HAR, MHealth, PAMAP2, and USC-HAD, and an in-house alpine skiing dataset collected in the wild, where our model achieved 99%, 99%, 95%, 88%, and 92% accuracy. Our proposed method shows consistent performance and good generalization on all the datasets compared to the state of the art.

The advent of hard X-ray free-electron lasers enables nanoscopic X-ray imaging with sub-picosecond temporal resolution. X-ray grating interferometry offers a phase-sensitive full-field imaging technique where the phase retrieval can be carried out from a single exposure alone. Thus, the method is attractive for imaging applications at X-ray free-electron lasers where intrinsic pulse-to-pulse fluctuations pose a major challenge. In this work, the single-exposure phase imaging capabilities of grating interferometry are characterized by an implementation at the I13-1 beamline of Diamond Light Source (Oxfordshire, UK). For comparison purposes, propagation-based phase contrast imaging was also performed at the same instrument. The characterization is carried out in terms of the quantitativeness and the contrast-to-noise ratio of the phase reconstructions as well as via the achievable spatial resolution. By using a statistical image reconstruction scheme, previous limitations of grating interferometry regarding the spatial resolution can be mitigated as well as the experimental applicability of the technique.

In order to develop machine learning and deep learning models that take into account the guidelines and principles of trustworthy AI, a novel information theoretic approach is introduced in this article. A unified approach to privacy-preserving interpretable and transferable learning is considered for studying and optimizing the trade-offs between the privacy, interpretability, and transferability aspects of trustworthy AI. A variational membership-mapping Bayesian model is used for the analytical approximation of the defined information theoretic measures for privacy leakage, interpretability, and transferability. The approach consists of approximating the information theoretic measures by maximizing a lower-bound using variational optimization. The approach is demonstrated through numerous experiments on benchmark datasets and a real-world biomedical application concerned with the detection of mental stress in individuals using heart rate variability analysis.

Robotic process automation (RPA) is a technology for office automation to imitate human behaviour when interacting with computers to perform digitized tasks manually, such as opening and closing applications, reading documents, entering data, and sending e-mails. As with any new digital technology answering the question of where to start and what is the right software, is challenging. In the case of RPA, the question of where to start depends on the selection of the business process to be automated and optimized. There are approaches for process selection in research, but they are relatively complex and have not been validated in practice. To fill this gap, we have simplified the process selection method and validated it on a practical example. We also present a simple method to select the appropriate RPA software. The criteria selection and evaluation were done with the Pairwise Comparison and Benefit Value Analysis method. This approach is relatively easy to follow and to apply in practice and thus also closes a gap in applied research.

The rapid growth of Industry 4.0 and predictive methods fostered a great potential for state-of-the-art techniques in the industrial sector, especially in smart factories. The equipment failure or system breakdowns during run time of a factory creates a severe problems towards impoverishment of the production system and destitution of the business. Predictive Maintenance (PdM) is a cost-saving and data driven technique to predict the maintenance time of in-service equipment or systems to reduce breakdown time and increase productivity. Although PdM is pragmatically adopted in large-scale industries, there is a lack of studies that map the PdM adoption in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). In this systematic mapping study (SMS), we focus on predictive maintenance from an SME perspective to explore the field for researchers, scientists, and developers to comprehend the potential of PdM systems, their challenges, distinctive characteristics, and best practices in SMEs. Our study is based on four research questions comprised of demographic data, key challenges, distinctive characteristics, and best practices of predictive maintenance in SMEs. We found that the current literature on PdM is deficient in the SME domain, especially the financial side is vague. There is a huge potential for PdM in SMEs to design cost models and focus on data availability impediments. Management and monitoring of PdM and skilled personnel are also inadequate. Thus, we present a study that extracts the knowledge from the existing literature about PdM in SMEs, finds the research gap, and can assist in identifying the barriers and challenges of PdM adoption in SMEs.
