Reflection seismic data, 2D, as well as 3D, and refraction data such as active OBS (Ocean Bottom Seismometer) data, are the paramount source of information for the deep subsurface structure as they provide by far the highest resolution of any comparable geophysical technique. Within MetaSeis, we will develop unifying data infrastructure and prepare for future archival of reflection 3D seismic data and active OBS data from recent and future research cruises. We aim to adopt and extend existing standards and interoperable vocabularies in the seismic metadata, including metadata quality and validation checks. With this initiative, Helmholtz Metadata Collaboration will serve Germany’s marine geophysics community as represented by AGMAR of the Fachkollegium Physik der Erde of DFG but also contributes to the efforts of NFDI4Earth/DAM/DataHUB and the involved Helmholtz centres to establish a distributed infrastructure for data curation by harmonised data workflows with connections to international data repositories.

The German marine seismic community has agreed on a metadata standard for raw 2D marine multichannel seismic reflection data to fulfill FAIR principles. This standard is now being implemented on German research vessels. In addition, a direct data transfer of raw data from the vessel to the data repository PANGAEA has been established for underway data – a process that is transparent to the user and supports scientists in fulfilling their data management duties. The metadata are directly transferred to data access platforms like GEOMAR’s Ocean Science Information System (OSIS). We will expand this concept to other seismic data types.

The data were recorded with an 184-channel streamer. The objectives of expedition SO294 were twofold: provision of geophysical images to constrain the hazard potential of the Cascadia subduction zone, and to constrain the geophysical properties of the oceanic crust to assess its storage potential for carbon capture and storage (CCS). The data comprise 1660 line kilometers and are provided in raw format (SEG-D) and associated standardized metadata. Detailed information on the acquisition can be found in the SO294 cruise report (https://doi.org/10.48433/cr_so294). In addition, this technical report is provided with the 2D multichannel seismic reflection data set.

GEOMAR research covers a unique range of physical, chemical, biological and geological ocean processes. The department Digital Research Services develops and provides advice and tools to support scientific data workflows, including metadata description of expeditions, model experiments, lab experiments, and samples. Our focus lies on standardized internal data exchange in large interdisciplinary scientific projects and citable data and software publications in discipline specific repositories to meet the FAIR principles. GEOMAR aims at providing their services not only internally but as a collaborative RDM platform for marine projects as a community service. How to achieve this on the operational level is currently worked on jointly with other research institutions in community projects, e.g. within the DAM (German Alliance of Marine Research), the DataHUB, an initiative of several research centres within the Helmholtz research area Earth and Environment, and within the national research infrastructure NFDI4Earth, a network of more than 60 partners. Our latest use cases are the inclusion of the seismic data and numerical model simulations into the community portals to increase their visibility and reusability. We present the success stories and pitfalls of bringing a locally well established system in larger communities and address the challenges we are facing.
