The mouth plays a critical role in the transmission of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) owing to the fact that both the tongue and salivary glands are conducive environments for the storage and spread of the virus. This case series aimed to describe the oral manifestations of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) and report the rapid response to Phtalox® treatment in all patients who tested positive for the virus. The patients were grouped based on whether according to convenience as soon as they tested positive for COVID-19. All patients had mouth ulcers and were advised to use 5 mL of Phtalox® mouthwash for 1 min, five times daily, in addition to standard COVID-19 treatment. Complete healing of mouth ulcers occurred in all patients diagnosed with COVID-19, and the mean duration for complete healing was 2.37 days. General improvement of COVID-19 symptoms was also observed. Based on the rapid recovery of mouth ulcers observed, we suggest that Phtalox® is effective as a complementary oral treatment for ulcers associated with COVID-19.

This study identifies the impact of the absence of dental support for patients with cancer whose clinical dental care was interrupted by the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic.Individuals with oncologic diseases were selected from a telephone list of a Clinical Research Center (CRC) that specialized in the care of patients with cancer at the Bauru School of Dentistry, University of São Paulo (FOB/USP). The convenience sample comprised 280 patients (aged 18 years) with a history of cancer that underwent dental treatment at the FOB/USP CRC in 2019 and did not receive care in 2020 owing to the pandemic. The participants completed a questionnaire sent via email or a text messaging application. Individuals receiving treatment or who were already treated for cancer were divided into two groups for data tabulation. Statistical analyses were performed using Fisher's and chi-square tests.Of the 280 patients, 104 answered the questionnaire, and 75 (72.1%) were women. Among the women, 45 (60.0%) were receiving antineoplastic treatment, and 30 (40.0%) had already been treated. Among the men, 15 (51.7%) were receiving antineoplastic treatment, and 14 (48.3%) had already been treated. Regarding oral problems that arose during the pandemic, dental pain when eating hot or cold food or drinks (57.0%), muscle pain (53.8%), and difficulties when chewing (51.0%) were the most common reported among patients. Furthermore, most individuals reported not having received any type of remote dental follow-up, before being contacted by our team, which could contribute to reducing these oral problems.It is impossible to say whether the absence of dental support in cancer patients during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic had a negative impact on oral issue rates.

The present study aimed to evaluate the in vitro antiseptic efficacy of a mouthwash and a dental gel containing phthalocyanine derivatives (Pc) against bacteria and fungi frequently found in patients with ventilator-associated pneumonia. The experiment in this study was conducted following Good Laboratory Practices. The product was tested at concentrations of 0.015% (mouthwash) and 0.100% (dental gel). The contact time of the suspension test (Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella sp., Candida albicans, and Aspergillus niger) was 60 s (1 min). In this analysis, the Phtalox® Mouthwash and Dental Gel resulted in a 99.99% reduction against the tested microorganisms after 1 min of contact time in both products. The Pc-containing mouthwash and dental gel were effective against bacteria and fungi found in patients with ventilator-associated pneumonia.

BACKGROUND: There is a need for studies that correlate the severity of oral mucositis (OM) with chemotherapy protocols, transient myelosuppression and oral health. OBJECTIVE: To analyze the severity of OM among individuals with solid tumors during hospitalization and its correlation with the type of chemotherapy, myelosuppression and oral health condition. DESIGN AND SETTING: Retrospective study at a public hospital in Bauru, state of São Paulo, Brazil, that is a regional referral center. METHODS: Individuals diagnosed with solid malignant tumors who received chemotherapy during hospitalization for completion of the antineoplastic treatment cycle or who presented complications resulting from this were assessed. RESULTS: Twenty-eight individuals (24.3%) manifested some degree of OM. The most prevalent degrees of OM according to the World Health Organization (WHO) and modified WHO classification were grades 2 (11.3%) and 5 (4.3%), respectively. It was observed that the higher the OM-WHO (P < 0.001; r = 0.306) and modified OM-WHO (P < 0.001; r = 0.295) classifications were, the greater the oral pain reported by the individuals was. Presence of mucositis in the upper lip and buccal mucosa contributed to increased severity of OM and worsening of swallowing during hospitalization. Thus, severe OM was associated with use of the FOLFIRI protocol (folinic acid, fluorouracil and irinotecan). CONCLUSION: Individuals with tumors who presented severe OM had greater severity of oral pain and worse oral health. Use of the FOLFIRI protocol was associated with higher prevalence of severe OM, while use of 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) was correlated with worse oral condition.

Background/Objective: This study aims to describe in detail the characteristics of the different jaw bone lesions seen in cone beam computed tomography examinations, from a retrospective analysis. Methods: All the preoperative examinations of cone beam computed tomography of intraosseous lesions of the jaws were retrospectively reviewed from patients treated at the Department of Stomatology of a Brazilian University, from 2008 to 2017. The following data were collected: sex, age, location, density and size of the lesion, relation to an unerupted tooth, margins, cortical and/or perforation, tooth displacement, root resorption, presence of calcifications, and proximity to anatomical structures. Fisher's exact test was used to verify associations between the variables. Results: We identified 28 lesions, all of which were benign: 14 odontogenic keratocysts, 5 odontomas, 3 dentigerous cysts, 2 ameloblastomas, 1 ameloblastic fibro-odontoma, 1 cementoblastoma, 1 adenomatoid odontogenic tumour, and 1 calcifying epithelial odontogenic cyst. Of these lesions, 23 affected the mandible, and 5 the maxilla. Aim This research suggested an in vitro virucidal action of a dental gel and a mouthwash with phthalocyanine derivative. Purpose The aim of this study was to report an in vitro study evaluating the virucidal capacity of mouthwash and dental gel containing anionic phthalocyanine derivate (APD). Methods The research followed the recommendations of the National Health Surveillance Agency (ANVISA) and adapted methodology, described in the standards EN14776: 2015; ASTM E1053-11 and the Robert Koch Institute – RKI, in addition to good laboratory practices (GLP). The determination of the percentage of inactivation of the SARS-CoV-2 virus particles was carried out by imposing the viral solution in contact with the respective tested products, with intervals of 30 seconds, 1 and 5 minutes, with subsequent submission of the aliquots, recovered in cell culture microplates following virus titration using the TCID50 (50% Median Tissue Culture Infectious Dose). Results The Mouthwash APD presented 90% of viral inactivation percentage, while the dental gel APD demonstrated 99.99% of viral inactivation. Background: The risk of contamination and dissemination by SARS-CoV-2 has a strong link with nasal, oral and pharyngeal cavities. Recently, our research group observed the promising performance of an anionic phthalocyanine derivative (APD) used in a mouthwash protocol without photoexcitation; this protocol improved the general clinical condition of patients infected with SARS-CoV-2. Methods: The present two-arm study evaluated in vitro the antiviral activity and cytotoxicity of APD. Additionally, a triple-blind randomized controlled trial was conducted with 41 hospitalized patients who tested positive for COVID-19. All the included patients received World Health Organization standard care hospital treatment (non-intensive care) plus active mouthwash (experimental group AM/n=20) or nonactive mouthwash (control group NAM/n=21). The adjunct mouthwash intervention protocol used in both groups consisted one-minute gargling/rinsing / 5 times/day until hospital discharge. Groups were compared considering age, number of comorbidities, duration of symptoms prior admission and length of hospital stay (LOS). The associations between group and sex, age range, presence of comorbidities, admission to Intensive care unit (ICU) and death were also evaluated. Results: The in vitro evaluation demonstrated that APD compound was highly effective for reduction of SARS-CoV-2 viral load in the 1.0 mg/mL (99.96%) to 0.125 mg/mL (92.65%) range without causing cytotoxicity. Regarding the clinical trial, the median LOS of the AM group was significantly shortened (4 days) compared with that of the NAM group (7 days) (p=0.0314). Additionally, gargling/rinsing with APD was very helpful in reducing the severity of symptoms (no ICU care was needed) compared to not gargling/rinsing with APD (28.6% of the patients in the NAM group needed ICU care, and 50% of this ICU subgroup passed way, p=0.0207). Conclusions: This study indicated that the mechanical action of the protocol involving mouthwash containing a compound with antiviral effects against SARS-CoV-2 may reduce the symptoms of the patients and the spread of infection. The use of APD in a mouthwash as an adjuvant the hospital COVID-19 treatment presented no contraindication and reduced the hospital stay period. Introdução: O município de Pelotas-RS dispõe do Programa de Internação Domiciliar Interdisciplinar (PIDI) implantado no Hospital Escola da Universidade Federal de Pelotas com a presença de cirurgiões-dentistas em sua equipe. O PIDI atende a pacientes oncológicos em cuidados paliativos. Objetivo: Avaliar a prevalência de manifestações bucais em pacientes assistidos por esse programa, as características epidemiológicas da referida população e verificar a associação das manifestações com o tipo de câncer e tratamento antineoplásico recebido. Método: Estudo transversal retrospectivo, com dados secundários coletados dos prontuários odontológicos de pacientes atendidos no período de abril de 2018 a setembro de 2019. O teste qui-quadrado foi aplicado com um nível de 5% de significância (p ≤0,05) atribuído aos resultados significativos. Resultados: As manifestações bucais foram encontradas 47 vezes nos 61 pacientes avaliados, sendo que alguns apresentaram mais de uma ocorrência. Pacientes que apresentavam câncer primário no sistema digestivo foram os mais acometidos por manifestações bucais. As mais prevalentes foram xerostomia (26,2%); candidíase (18%); mucosite (13,1%); disfagia e disgeusia, que apresentaram o mesmo percentual (9,8%); nenhum paciente desenvolveu carie de radiação. A xerostomia mostrou significância estatística (p≤0,05) na associação com o tipo de câncer. Ao correlacionar as manifestações bucais com o tipo de tratamento recebido, estas não apresentaram significância estatística. Conclusão: Este estudo demonstrou alta prevalência de manifestações bucais na população estudada, reafirmando a importância do cirurgião-dentista na equipe multiprofissional de cuidados paliativos.

Background: The PHTALOX® mouthwash appears in this case series as a promising alternative for reducing the viral load of SARS-CoV-2 and for clinical improvement of infected patients. Objectives: The aim of this study was to report a case series of mouthwash to reduce clinical symptoms in patients diagnosed with COVID-19. Methods: Eight patients used 5ml of PHTALOX® mouthwash for gargling/rinsing during 1 minute/ five times a day during 14 days. Two measurement scales were applied for each patient in different periods to verify sore throat - VAS – Visual Analogic Scale for Pain and the clinical conditions - PS – Performance Status. Results: All patients presented a significant reduction in clinical symptoms with PHTALOX® mouthwash for gargling/rinsing after few days of use, without hospitalization. Conclusion: The PHTALOX® mouthwash protocol appears as a promising alternative for clinical improvement of COVID-19 infected patients. Daily use of this mouthwash rapidly reduced clinical symptoms such as sore throats, coughs and mouth ulcers. Clinical trials are necessary to confirm the effectiveness of PHTALOX® protocol against COVID-19.
