In this paper we present the science potential of the enhanced X-ray Timing and Polarimetry (eXTP) mission for studies of strongly magnetized objects. We will focus on the physics and astrophysics of strongly magnetized objects, namely magnetars, accreting X-ray pulsars, and rotation powered pulsars. We also discuss the science potential of eXTP for QED studies. Developed by an international Consortium led by the Institute of High Energy Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the eXTP mission is expected to be launched in the mid 2020s., Comment: Accepted for publication on Sci. In this White Paper we present the potential of the Enhanced X-ray Timing and Polarimetry (eXTP) mission for determining the nature of dense matter; neutron star cores host an extreme density regime which cannot be replicated in a terrestrial laboratory. The tightest statistical constraints on the dense matter equation of state will come from pulse profile modelling of accretion-powered pulsars, burst oscillation sources, and rotation-powered pulsars. Additional constraints will derive from spin measurements, burst spectra, and properties of the accretion flows in the vicinity of the neutron star. In 2003, the magnetar XTE J1810-197 started an outburst that lasted until early 2007. In the following 11 years, the source stayed in a quiescent/low activity phase. XTE J1810-197 is one of the closest magnetars, hence its X-ray properties can be studied in detail even in quiescence and an extended monitoring has been carried out to study its long term timing and spectral evolution. Here, we report the results of new X-ray observations, taken between September 2017 and April 2018, with XMM-Newton, Chandra and Nicer. We derived a phase-connected timing solution yielding a frequency derivative of -9.26(6)x10^-14 Hz s-1. This value is consistent with that measured between 2009 and 2011, indicating that the pulsar spin-down rate remained quite stable during the long quiescent period. A spectral analysis of all the X-ray observations taken between 2009 and 2018 does not reveal significant spectral and/or flux variability. The spectrum of XTE J1810-197 can be described by the sum of two thermal components with temperatures of 0.15 and 0.3 keV, plus a power law component with photon index 0.6. We also found evidence for an absorption line at ~1.2 keV and width of 0.1 keV. Thanks to the long exposure time of the summed XMM-Newton observations, we could also carry out a phase-resolved spectral analysis for this source in quiescence. This showed that the flux modulation can be mainly ascribed to the the warmer of the two thermal components, whose flux varies by ~45 per cent along the pulse phase., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS, 7 pages, 5 figures, 3 tables

We present six years of optical monitoring of the black hole candidate X-ray binary Swift J1357.2-0933, during and since its discovery outburst in 2011. On these long timescales, the quiescent light curve is dominated by high amplitude, short term (seconds-days) variability spanning ~ 2 magnitudes, with an increasing trend of the mean flux from 2012 to 2017 that is steeper than in any other X-ray binary found to date (0.17 mag/yr). We detected the initial optical rise of the 2017 outburst of Swift J1357.2-0933, and we report that the outburst began between April 1 and 6, 2017. Such a steep optical flux rise preceding an outburst is expected according to disk instability models, but the high amplitude variability in quiescence is not. Previous studies have shown that the quiescent spectral, polarimetric and rapid variability properties of Swift J1357.2-0933 are consistent with synchrotron emission from a weak compact jet. We find that a variable optical/infrared spectrum is responsible for the brightening: a steep, red spectrum before and soon after the 2011 outburst evolves to a brighter, flatter spectrum since 2013. The evolving spectrum appears to be due to the jet spectral break shifting from the infrared in 2012 to the optical in 2013, then back to the infrared by 2016-2017 while the optical remains relatively bright. Swift J1357.2-0933 is a valuable source to study black hole jet physics at very low accretion rates, and is possibly the only quiescent source in which the optical jet properties can be regularly monitored., Comment: Accepted to ApJ. 9 pages, 4 figures

We present the results of our analysis of new optical, ultraviolet (UV) and X-ray observations of a highly variable source $-$ AX J1549.8$-$5416. Both the detection of several fast rise, exponential decay outbursts in the optical light curve and the lack of He II emission lines in the optical spectra suggest AX J1549.8$-$5416 is a cataclysmic variable of the dwarf nova (DN) type. The multiwavelength analysis of three mini-outbursts and one normal outburst represent one of the most complete multiwavelength studies of a DN and help to refine the relationship between the X-ray, UV and optical emission in this system. We find that the UV emission is delayed with respect to the optical by $1.0-5.4$ days during the rising phase of the outburst. The X-ray emission is suppressed during the peak of the optical outburst and recovers during the end of the outburst. From our analysis of archival Swift, Chandra and XMM-Newton observations of AX J1549.8$-$5416, we estimate this DN has a high duty cycle ($\sim50\%$), suggesting a quiescent X-ray luminosity larger than $10^{32}$ erg/s. We also find the X-ray and UV flux are roughly anti-correlated. Furthermore, we find that, at low X-ray fluxes, the X-ray spectrum is well described by a single temperature thermal plasma model, while at high X-ray fluxes, an isobaric cooling flow model also works. We find that the maximum temperature of the plasma in quiescence is significantly higher than that in outburst., Comment: 14 pages, 10 figures. Accepted for publication in MNRAS

In magnetic cataclysmic variables (CVs), X-ray emission regions are located close to the white dwarf surface, which is expected to reflect a significant fraction of intrinsic X-rays above 10 keV, producing a Compton reflection hump. However, up to now, a secure detection of this effect in magnetic CVs has largely proved elusive because of the limited sensitivity of non-imaging X-ray detectors. Here we report our analysis of joint NuSTAR/XMM-Newton observations of three magnetic CVs, V709 Cas, NY Lup, and V1223 Sgr. The improved hard X-ray sensitivity of the imaging NuSTAR data has resulted in the first robust detection of Compton hump in all three objects, with amplitudes of ~1 or greater in NY Lup, and likely <1.0 in the other two. We also confirm earlier report of a strong spin modulation above 10 keV in V709 Cas, and report the first detection of small spin amplitudes in the others. We interpret this as due to different height of the X-ray emitting region among these objects. A height of ~0.2 white dwarf radii provides a plausible explanation for the low reflection amplitude of V709 Cas. Since emission regions above both poles are visible at certain spin phases, this can also explain the strong hard X-ray spin modulation. A shock height of ~0.05 white dwarf radii can explain our results on V1223 Sgr, while the shock height in NY Lup appears negligible., Comment: 16 pages including 3 figures and 2 tables; accepted for publication in Astrophysical Journal Letters

Swift J2218.4+1925, a hard X-ray source detected by Swift BAT, has been proposed as a candidate magnetic cataclysmic variable of the polar type from optical spectroscopy. Using XMM-Newton we perform detailed timing and spectral analysis with simultaneous X-ray ($0.3-10$ keV) and optical B band data. We complement the spectral study with archival hard X-ray (14-70 keV) spectra collected by Swift BAT as well as with optical, near and mid-infrared photometry from $SDSS$, $2MASS$ and $WISE$ archive, respectively. A strong periodic X-ray signal at 2.16 h, consistent with the recently determined spectroscopic orbital period, adds Swift J2218.4+1925 to the small group of hard X-ray polars and locates it at the low edge of the orbital period gap. The X-ray pulse profile shows the typical bright and faint phases seen in polars ($\sim 70%$ and $\sim 30%$ of the orbit, respectively). A pronounced dip centred on the bright phase is also detected. It is stronger at lower energies and is mainly produced by photoelectric absorption. A binary inclination $i \sim 40^o - 50^o$ and a magnetic colatitude $\beta \sim 55^o - 64^o$ are estimated. The source appears to accrete over a large area $\sim 24^o$ wide. A multi-temperature optically thin emission with complex absorption well describes the broad-band ($0.3-70$ keV) spectrum, with no signs of a soft X-ray blackbody component. The spectral shape varies with the source rotation reaching plasma temperatures up to 55 keV, hardening at the dip and being softer during the faint phase ($\sim7$ keV). We find the first indication of an absorption edge due to a warm absorber in a polar. Indication of overabundance of neon is found in the RGS spectra. The UV to mid-IR spectral energy distribution reveals an excess in the near and mid-IR, likely due to low cyclotron harmonics. We estimate a WD mass of 0.97 M$_{\odot}$ and a distance of 230-250 pc., Comment: 9 pages, 3 tables, 8 figures. Accepted for publication on MNRAS

We conducted the first long-term (75 days) X-ray monitoring of the black hole low mass X-ray binary V404 Cyg, with the goal of understanding and characterizing its variability during quiescence. The X-ray light curve of V404 shows several flares on timescales of hours with a count rate change of a factor of about 5-8. The root mean square variability is Fvar = 57.0(3.2) percent. The first order structure function is consistent with both a power spectrum of index -1 (flicker noise), or with a power spectrum of index 0 (white noise), implying that the light curve is variable on timescales from days to months. The X-ray spectrum is well fitted by a power law with spectral index {\Gamma} = 2.10 - 2.35, and we found that the spectral shape remains roughly constant as the flux changes. A constant spectral shape with respect to a change in the X-ray flux may favour a scenario in which the X-ray emission is dominated by synchrotron radiation produced in a jet., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures, 2 tables, accepted on MNARS on January 16 2014

The return to the quiescent state of the Anomalous X-ray pulsar XTE J1810-197 following its 2003 outburst represents a unique opportunity to probe the surface emission properties of a magnetar. The quiescent emission of XTE J1810-197 is composed of two thermal components, one arising from the whole star surface, and the other from a small warm spot on it. By modeling the magnitude and shape of the pulse profile in narrow spectral bands, we have been able to constrain the physical characteristics and geometrical parameters of the system: the two angles that the line of sight and the spin axis make with respect to the warm spot axis (\psi\ and \xi\ respectively), the angular size of the spot, and the overall surface temperature distribution. Our modeling accounts for the general relativistic effects of gravitational redshift and light bending near the stellar surface, and allows for local anisotropic emission. We found that the surface temperature distribution on the neutron star is consistent with the expectations of a dipole magnetic field configuration; the local radiation requires a pencil-beamed emission pattern, suggesting the presence of a magnetized atmosphere. For a typical value of the radius, R=13 km, the viewing parameters (symmetric for an interchange between \psi\ and \xi), range from \psi=\xi=38 deg to (\psi,\xi)=(52 deg, 29 deg). These angles are consistent with those obtained by modeling the AXP in outburst, with uncertainty contours reduced by a factor of 2.5., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures, Accepted 2011 July 26 by MNRAS

We report here on the outburst onset and evolution of the new Soft Gamma Repeater SGR 0501+4516. We monitored the new SGR with XMM-Newton starting on 2008 August 23, one day after the source became burst-active, and continuing with 4 more observations, with the last one on 2008 September 30. Combining the data with the Swift-XRT and Suzaku data, we modelled the outburst decay over 160 days, and we found that the source flux decreased exponentially with a timescale of t_c=23.8 days. In the first XMM-Newton observation a large number of short X-ray bursts were observed, the rate of which decayed drastically in the following observations. We found large changes in the spectral and timing behavior of the source during the outburst, with softening emission as the flux decayed, and the non-thermal soft X-ray spectral component fading faster than the thermal one. Almost simultaneously to our XMM-Newton observations (on 2008 August 29 and September 2), we observed the source in the hard X-ray range with INTEGRAL, which clearly detected the source up to ~100keV in the first pointing, while giving only upper limits during the second pointing, discovering a variable hard X-ray component fading in less than 10 days after the bursting activation. We performed a phase-coherent X-ray timing analysis over about 160 days starting with the burst activation and found evidence of a strong second derivative period component (\ddot{P} = -1.6(4)x10^{-19} s/s^{-2}). Thanks to the phase-connection, we were able to study the the phase-resolved spectral evolution of SGR 0501+4516 in great detail. We also report on the ROSAT quiescent source data, taken back in 1992 when the source exhibits a flux ~80 times lower than that measured during the outburst, and a rather soft, thermal spectrum., Comment: 16 pages; accepted for publication in MNRAS

In 2003 a previously unpulsed Einstein and ROSAT source cataloged as soft and dim (Lx of few 10^33 ergs) thermal emitting object, namely XTE J1810-197, was identified as the first unambiguous transient Anomalous X-ray Pulsar. Two years later this source was also found to be a bright highly polarized transient radio pulsar, a unique property among both AXPs and radio pulsars. In September 2006 the Swift Burst Alert Telescope (BAT) detected an intense burst from the candidate AXP CXOU J164710.2-455216, which entered in an outburst state reaching a peak emission of at least a factor of 300 higher than quiescence. Here, we briefly outline the recent results concerning the outburst phenomena observed in these two AXPs. In particular, XTE J1810-197 has probed to be a unique laboratory to monitor the timing and spectral properties of a cooling/fading AXP, while new important information have been inferred from X-ray and radio band simultaneous observations.
