The overall rate of new HIV infection continues to decline in several countries, but there is still a remarkable burden of disease seen in sub-Saharan Africa. Several studies observed that 70% to 90% of HIV-infected patients present with ear, nose and throat symptoms. The aim of this study was to identify the magnitude of ENT manifestations among HIV-infected patients attended HIV clinics at KCMC based on age, sex, and CD4 count.Methods: This was a descriptive cross-sectional study conducted at KCMC hospital involving HIV-infected patients who attended HIV clinics from February to July 2018. Convenient sampling was employed to get study participants, and 200 patients were recruited in the study. Data were collected through a questionnaire from patients, and results were analyzed using SPSS version 20.Results: Sixty-eight (34%) of 200 HIV-infected patients had ENT manifestations. The most affected age group was 0– 9 years. ENT manifestations were more prevalent in females (23.5%) than in males (10.5%). Those with CD4 count less than 200cells/μL also it was a high prevalence (56.3%).Conclusion: This study observed that one-third of the studied population had ENT manifestations. All medical practitioners should be aware of ENT manifestations in HIV-infected patients in order to assure early and appropriate intervention.Keywords: ENT manifestations, HIV, magnitude, seropositive, Tanzania

The invention relates to a radiation-curable coating composition comprising a 5-hydroxy or 5-alkoxy-2(5H)-furanone compound A, a compound B with two or more vinyl ether or vinyl ester groups, wherein the molar ratio of vinyl moieties in compound B and furanone moieties in compound A is at least 0.5, and wherein the coating composition is free of a compound with two or more acryloyl or methacryloyl groups. The invention further relates to a method of coating a substrate comprising applying such coating composition to a substrate and radiation-curing the coating composition to form a cured coating, and to a coated substrate obtainable by such method.

The invention relates to a binder polymer obtainable by copolymerizing a monomer mixture comprising a vinyl monomer M1 and a butenolide monomer M2, wherein the vinyl monomer M1 is a vinyl ether of general formula R1-O- CH2, a vinyl ester of general formula R2-C(O)-O-CH2, or a combination thereof, wherein each of R1 and R2 is, independently, an organic radical containing in the range of from 4 to 18 carbon atoms, and wherein the butenolide monomer M2 is a 5-alkoxy-2(5H)-furanone of general formula (III) wherein R3 is an alkyl radical containing in the range of from 1 to 12 carbon atoms. The invention further relates to a coating composition comprising such binder polymer and to a substrate coated with a coating deposited from such coating composition.

The invention relates to the fields of photopharmacology and photo-controlled analyte sensing. More in particular, it relates to a pore forming toxin Fragaceatoxin C (FraC) from Actina fragacea that can be reversibly controlled by using light as external trigger. Provided is a modified FraC monomer capable of forming a photo-controlled FraC nanopore, the FraC monomer comprising a photoswitchable moiety, e.g. an azobenzene-based photoswitch, covalently attached to one or more of the positions K77, W112, E134, Y138, and S166.

A study was performed with Monte Carlo simulation samples for an initial development of the selection criteria using the physical objects used in the signal selection. After having applied the signal selection to simulation, the results were compared to data from a previously published paper by the CMS collaboration, that was used as a reference for this study. The data were obtained from proton-proton collisions with center of mass energy of 13 TeV and integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb−1. O presente trabalho apresenta um estudo da observação do decaimento raro no qual o bóson Z decai em um méson J/ψ e dois léptons de mesmo sabor e cargas opostas no detector CMS. Para tanto, foi feito um estudo com amostras de simulação de Monte Carlo para estabelecer critérios de seleção, utilizando os objetos físicos envolvidos na seleção do sinal. Em seguida, comparou-se os resultados obtidos através da simulação com os dados, em resultado previamente publicado pela colaboração do CMS e usado como referência para o presente estudo. Os dados são provenientes de colisões próton-próton com energia de centro de massa igual a 13 TeV e luminosidade integrada de 35,9 fb−1.

The invention relates to the synthesis of amphiphilic amino acid derivatives, in particular to a method for the N-alkylation of an unprotected amino acid or the N-terminus of an oligopeptide substrate, comprising reacting said unprotected amino acid or oligopeptide substrate with an alcohol, e.g. a fatty alcohol, in the presence of a homogeneous transition metal catalyst.

Aims: Cationic steroids like CSA-13 have been designed by analogy with antimicrobial cationic peptides and have bactericidal properties. The purpose of this work was to evaluate the effect of a low concentration (1 mg l(-1)) of CSA-13 on the formation of a biofilm by eight strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa (four mucoid and four nonmucoid strains) on an inert surface. Method and Results: The biofilm formation was measured with the Crystal Violet method. CSA-13 inhibited the formation of a biofilm by three strains. The zeta potential varied among the strains. The inhibition by the cationic steroid analogue affected the populations of bacteria with the lowest zeta potential. P. aeruginosa bound a fluorescent, more hydrophobic analogue of CSA-13 but there was no correlation between this binding and the inhibition by CSA-13 of biofilm formation. The interaction of CSA-13 with bacteria did not modify their ability to produce rhamnolipids. Conclusions: A low concentration of CSA-13 inhibits the formation of a biofilm by P. aeruginosa through electrostatic interactions and without affecting the production of rhamnolipids. Significance and Impact of the Study: A low, nontoxic concentration of CSA-13 might be beneficial for the prevention of biofilm formation.

International audience; The social model of disability has implications for evaluation of disability policy. Public health analyses suggest that a population and environmental approach to enablement is more likely to impact positively on disabled people than person-centred action. The capacity of people living with disabilities to participate in a range of social activities and the attitudes of others to such participation are, along with environments, important factors contributing to disability situations and therefore the restriction of our promotion of personhood. These are areas where metrics could be used to evaluate the impact of disability policy.

International audience; We report here the case of a hospitalized 11 year-old boy (YP) with a positive diagnosis of 'Childhood Onset Schizophrenia'. YP experienced verbal-auditory hallucinations, a delusion of alien control and hetero-aggressive behaviour. Antipsychotic drugs were unsuccessful and furthermore provoked severe acute dystonia. fMRI-guided rTMS applied over several cortical regions provided the means to reveal for the first time a functional dissociation between auditory-verbal hallucinations and agency. These results demonstrate the efficacy of rTMS for young patients suffering from drug-resistant hallucinations but they furthermore question the physiopathology of the hallucinatory process by suggesting that agency and hallucinations may be sub-served by different neural networks.

Although complex hallucinations are extremely vivid, painful symptoms in schizophrenia, little is known about the underlying mechanisms of multisensory integration in such a phenomenon. We investigated the neural basis of these altered states of consciousness in a patient with schizophrenia, by combining state of the art neuroscientific exploratory methods like functional MRI, diffusion tensor imaging, cortical thickness analysis, electrical source reconstruction and trans-cranial magnetic stimulation. The results shed light on the functional architecture of the hallucinatory processes, in which unimodal information from different modalities is strongly functionally connected to higher-order integrative areas.
