1. Dynamics of Spin Crossover Molecular Complexes

Abstract: We review the current understanding of the time scale and mechanisms associated with the change in spin state in transition metal-based spin crossover (SCO) molecular complexes. Most time resolved experiments, performed by optical techniques, rely on the intrinsic light-induced switching properties of this class of materials. The optically driven spin state transition can be mediated by a rich interplay of complexities including intermediate states in the spin state transition process, as well as intermolecular interactions, temperature, and strain. We emphasize here that the size reduction down to the nanoscale is essential for designing SCO systems that switch quickly as well as possibly retaining the memory of the light-driven state. We argue that SCO nano-sized systems are the key to device applications where the “write” speed is an important criterion.

2. The influence of molecular mobility on the properties of networks of gold nanoparticles and organic ligands

Abstract: We prepare and investigate two-dimensional (2D) single-layer arrays and multilayered networks of gold nanoparticles derivatized with conjugated hetero-aromatic molecules, i.e., S-(4-{[2,6-bipyrazol-1-yl)pyrid-4-yl]ethynyl}phenyl)thiolate (herein S-BPP), as capping ligands. These structures are fabricated by a combination of self-assembly and microcontact printing techniques, and are characterized by electron microscopy, UV–visible spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy. Selective binding of the S-BPP molecules to the gold nanoparticles through Au–S bonds is found, with no evidence for the formation of N–Au bonds between the pyridine or pyrazole groups of BPP and the gold surface. Subtle, but significant shifts with temperature of specific Raman S-BPP modes are also observed. We attribute these to dynamic changes in the orientation and/or increased mobility of the molecules on the gold nanoparticle facets. As for their conductance, the temperature-dependence for S-BPP networks differs significantly from standard alkanethiol-capped networks, especially above 220 K. Relating the latter two observations, we propose that dynamic changes in the molecular layers effectively lower the molecular tunnel barrier for BPP-based arrays at higher temperatures.

Abstract: International audience; Molecular systems can exhibit multi-stimuli switching of their properties, with spin crossover materials having unique magnetic transition triggered by temperature and light, among others. Light-induced room temperature operation is however elusive, as optical changes between metastable spin states require cryogenic temperatures. Furthermore, electrical detection is hampered by the intrinsic low conductivity properties of these materials. We show here how a graphene underlayer reveals the light-induced heating that triggers a spin transition, paving the way for using these molecules for room temperature optoelectronic applications.

Abstract: He+ ion irradiation is used to pattern multiple areas of Pt/Co/W films with different irradiation doses in Hall bars. The resulting perpendicular magnetic anisotropy landscape enables selective multilevel current-induced switching with full deterministic control of the position and order of the individual switching elements. Key pattern design parameters are specified, opening a way to scalable multi-level switching devices.

Abstract: We report on the modulation of the electrical properties of graphene-based transistors that mirror the properties of a few nanometers thick layer made of dipolar molecules sandwiched in between the 2D material and the SiO2 dielectric substrate. The chemical composition of the films of quinonemonoimine zwitterion molecules adsorbed onto SiO2 has been explored by means of X-ray photoemission and mass spectroscopy. Graphene-based devices are then fabricated by transferring the 2D material onto the molecular film, followed by the deposition of top source-drain electrodes. The degree of supramolecular order in disordered films of dipolar molecules was found to be partially improved as a result of the electric field at low temperatures, as revealed by the emergence of hysteresis in the transfer curves of the transistors. The use of molecules from the same family, which are suitably designed to interact with the dielectric surface, results in the disappearance of the hysteresis. DFT calculations confirm that the dressing of the molecules by an external electric field exhibits multiple minimal energy landscapes that explain the thermally stabilized capacitive coupling observed. This study demonstrates that the design and exploitation of ad hoc molecules as an interlayer between a dielectric substrate and graphene represents a powerful tool for tuning the electrical properties of the 2D material. Conversely, graphene can be used as an indicator of the stability of molecular layers, by providing insight into the energetics of ordering of dipolar molecules under the effect of electrical gating.

Abstract: Mixed-dimensional heterostructures formed by the stacking of 2D materials with nanostructures of distinct dimensionality constitute a new class of nanomaterials that offers multifunctionality that goes beyond those of single dimensional systems. An unexplored architecture of single electron transistor (SET) is developed that employs heterostructures made of nanoclusters (0D) grown on a 2D molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) channel. Combining the large Coulomb energy of the nanoclusters with the electronic capabilities of the 2D layer, the concept of 0D–2D vertical SET is unveiled. The MoS2 underneath serves both as a charge tunable channel interconnecting the electrode, and as bottom electrode for each v-SET cell. In addition, its atomic thickness makes it thinner than the Debye screening length, providing electric field transparency functionality that allows for an efficient electric back gate control of the nanoclusters charge state. The Coulomb diamond pattern characteristics of SET are reported, with specific doping dependent nonlinear features arising from the 0D/2D geometry that are elucidated by theoretical modeling. These results hold promise for multifunctional single electron device taking advantage of the versatility of the 2D materials library, with as example envisioned spintronics applications while coupling quantum dots to magnetic 2D material, or to ferroelectric layers for neuromorphic devices.

Abstract: International audience; Magneto-opto-electronic properties are shown for a hybrid device constructed from a spin crossover (SCO) thin film of a Fe[HB(3,5-(Me)2Pz)3]2 molecular material evaporated over a graphene sensing layer. The principle of electrical detection of the light-induced spin transition in SCO/graphene heterostructures is demonstrated. The switchable spin state of the molecular film is translated into a change of conductance of the graphene channel. The low temperature write/erase process of the conductive remnant states is implemented using two distinct excitation wavelengths, in the red (light-induced spin state trapping, LIESST) region for stabilizing the metastable paramagnetic state, and in the near infrared (reverse-LIESST) region for retrieving the stable diamagnetic state. The bistability of the system is confirmed over a significant temperature window through light-induced thermal hysteresis (LITH). This opens new avenues to study the light-induced spin transition mechanisms exploring the coupling mechanisms between SCO systems and 2D materials, providing electrical readings of the molecules/2D substrate interfaces. These results demonstrate how the electronic states of insulating molecular switches can be stored, read and manipulated by multiple stimuli, while transducing them into low impedance signals, thanks to two-dimensional detectors, revealing the full potential of mixed-dimensional heterostructures for molecular electronics and spintronics.

Abstract: Spin orbit torque driven switching is a favourable way to manipulate nanoscale magnetic objects for both memory and wireless communication devices. The critical current required to switch from one magnetic state to another depends on the geometry and the intrinsic properties of the materials used, which are difficult to control locally. Here we demonstrate how focused helium ion beam irradiation can modulate the local magnetic anisotropy of a Co thin film at the microscopic scale. Real-time in-situ characterisation using the anomalous Hall effect showed up to an order of magnitude reduction of the magnetic anisotropy under irradiation, and using this, multi-level switching is demonstrated. The result is that spin-switching current densities, down to 800 kA cm$^{-2}$, can be achieved on predetermined areas of the film, without the need for lithography. The ability to vary critical currents spatially has implications not only for storage elements, but also neuromorphic and probabilistic computing., Main text: 22 pages, 3 figures, 2 tables, 1 TOC graphic. Abstract: Achieving optical operation of logic elements, especially those that involve 2D layers, can open the long sought era of optical computing. However, the efficient optical modulation of the electronic properties of 2D materials including memory effect is currently missing. Here we report a fully optical control of the conductivity of a graphene with write/erase option yet under ultralow optical fluence. The competition between light-induced charge generation in ferroelectric-photovoltaic substrate with subsequent relaxation processes provides the selective photocarrier trapping control affecting the doping of 2D overlayer. Abstract: When miniaturizing fluidic circuitry, the solid walls of the fluid channels become increasingly important(1) because they limit the flow rates achievable for a given pressure drop, and they are prone to fouling(2). Approaches for reducing the wall interactions include hydrophobic coatings(3), liquid-infused porous surfaces(4-6), nanoparticle surfactant jamming(7), changes to surface electronic structure(8), electrowetting(9,10), surface tension pinning(11,12) and use of atomically flat channels(13). A better solution may be to avoid the solid walls altogether. Droplet microfluidics and sheath flow achieve this but require continuous flow of the central liquid and the surrounding liquid(1,14). Here we demonstrate an approach in which aqueous liquid channels are surrounded by an immiscible magnetic liquid, both of which are stabilized by a quadrupolar magnetic field. This creates self-healing, non-clogging, anti-fouling and near-frictionless liquid-in-liquid fluidic channels. Manipulation of the field provides flow control, such as valving, splitting, merging and pumping. The latter is achieved by moving permanent magnets that have no physical contact with the liquid channel. We show that this magnetostaltic pumping method can be used to transport whole human blood with very little damage due to shear forces. Haemolysis (rupture of blood cells) is reduced by an order of magnitude compared with traditional peristaltic pumping, in which blood is mechanically squeezed through a plastic tube. Our liquid-in-liquid approach provides new ways to transport delicate liquids, particularly when scaling channels down to the micrometre scale, with no need for high pressures, and could also be used for microfluidic circuitry.

Abstract: International audience; Nanocrystals are promising building blocks for the development of low-cost infrared optoelectronics. Gating a nanocrystal film in a phototransistor geometry is commonly proposed as a strategy to tune the signal to noise ratio by carefully controlling the carrier density within the semiconductor. However, the performance improvement has so far been quite marginal. With metallic electrodes, the gate dependence of the photocurrent follows the gate-induced change of the dark current. Graphene presents key advantages: (i) infrared transparency that allows back-side illumination, (ii) vertical electric field transparency and (iii) carrier selectivity under gate bias. Here, we investigate a configuration of 2D/0D infrared photodetectors taking advantage of a high capacitance ionic glass gate, large scale graphene electrodes, and a HgTe nanocrystal layer of high carrier mobility. The introduction of graphene electrodes combined with ionic glass enables to reconfigure selectively the HgTe nanocrystals and the graphene electrodes between electrons (n) and holes (p) doped states. We unveil that this functionality enables to design a 2D/0D p-n junction that expands throughout the device, with a built-in electric field that assists charge dissociation. We demonstrate that in this specific configuration, the signal to noise ratio for infrared photodetection can be enhanced by two orders of magnitude, and that photovoltaic operation can be achieved. Abstract: Molecular films of quinonoid zwitterions, of the general formula C6H2([horiz bar, triple dot above]O)2([horiz bar, triple dot above]NHR)2, have been shown to display electronic properties highly dependent on the nature of the N-substituent R when deposited on gold substrates. The different spacing and organization of the molecules can lead to molecular films with semi-metal or dielectric behavior. With the long term goal to establish how packing effects in the solid state correlate with properties as thin films, we first attempted to identify by X-ray diffraction analysis candidate molecules showing suitable packing arrangements in the crystalline state. To this end, we have prepared a series of new functionalized, enantiopure or sterically-hindered quinonoid zwitterions and established the crystal structure of those with R = CH2–CH2–Ph (6), CH2–CH2–CH2–Ph (7), CH2–CH2–CH2–CH2–Ph (8), CH2–CH2–CH(Ph)–Ph (9), CH(CH3)–Ph (12), CH(CH2–CH3)–Ph (13), CH2–((4–CH3)–C6H4) (15), CH2–((4–NH2)–C6H4) (19) and CH2–CH2–((3,4–(OCH3)2)–C6H3) (24). An analysis of the crystal packing of three molecules, 5, 13 and 15, selected as illustrative examples for comparisons, was carried out and it was unexpectedly found that these chemically very similar molecules gave rise to different packing in the bulk, with resulting thin films showing different electronic properties. Various methods have been used for the characterization of the films, such as synchrotron radiation-based FTIR spatial spectra-microscopy, which provided an anchoring map of zwitterion 15 on a patterned substrate (Au/SiO2) showing its selective anchoring on gold. This is one of the best examples of preferential anchoring of a zwitterion and the sole example of spatial localization for a quinonoid zwitterion thin film. We have also used combined photoemission and inverse photoemission spectra and the data were compared to occupied and unoccupied DFT density state calculations.

Specifically, the addition of benzimidazole results in a re-entrant spin crossover transition, i.e. the spin state starts in the mostly low spin state, then high spin state occupancy increases, and finally the high spin state occupancy decreases with increasing temperature. This behavior contrasts with that observed when the highly polar p -benzoquinonemonoimine zwitterion C6H2(...NH2)2(...O)2 was mixed with [Fe{H2B(pz)2}2(bipy)], which resulted in locking [Fe{H2B(pz)2}2(bipy)] largely into a low spin state while addition of the ethyl derivative C6H2(...NHC2H5)2(...O)2 did not appear to perturb the spin crossover transition of [Fe{H2B(pz)2}2(bipy)].

Abstract: International audience; Manganite perovskite oxides exhibit a wide range of properties relevant for catalysis, energy conversion and spintronics. Such behaviors can be deeply modified at the nanoscale where confinement and surface effects may prevail. Interesting properties could then emerge from manganite perovskite nanocrystals, although their synthesis remains a challenge. The present study reports a versatile synthesis of manganite perovskite nanocrystals by using molten salts as high temperature liquids in the 600-750 °C range. Through X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning and transmission electron microscopies, we show that many substitutions on the A perovskite site are within reach by applying the approach to La2/3Sr1/3MnO3, La2/3Ca1/3MnO3 and La1/3Pr1/3Ca1/3MnO3 cubic-shape nanocrystals with diameter of 20, 22 and 38 nm, respectively. The magnetic properties of these nanocrystals are then investigated at 5 K, highlighting the coexistence of a ferromagnetic phase typical of the bulk, with disordered and non-magnetic domains, which presumably arise from the nanoscale and surface effects.

Abstract: A thermal component to the soft x-ray induced spin crossover transition exists in the switching of a spin crossover compound (complex [Fe{H2B(pz)2}2(bipy)] (pz = pyrazol-1-yl, bipy = 2,2'-bipyridine) combined with the dipolar molecular additives (zwitterionic p-benzoquinonemonoimine C6H2([Formula: see text])2([Formula: see text])2). The addition of the zwitterionic molecule locks the Fe(II) complex in a largely low spin state configuration over an unusually broad temperature range that includes temperatures well above the thermal spin crossover temperature of 160 K. It is demonstrated here that the process of exciting the [Fe{H2B(pz)2}2(bipy)] moiety, in the presence of with C6H2([Formula: see text])2([Formula: see text])2, to an electronic state characteristic of the high spin state though incident x-ray fluences, has a thermal activation energies are determined to 14-18 meV for a range of mixing ratios from 1:2 to 1:10. Those activation energies are also significantly reduced as compared to values of 60-80 meV found for nanometer thin films of [Fe{H2B(pz)2}2(bipy)] on SiO2.

Abstract: Ferroelectric materials are an alternative to semiconductor-based photovoltaics and offer the advantage of above bandgap photovoltage generation. However, there are few known compounds, and photovoltaic efficiencies remain low. Here, we report the discovery of a photovoltaic effect in undoped lead magnesium niobate--lead titanate crystal and a significant improvement in the photovoltaic response under suitable electric fields and temperatures. The photovoltaic effect is maximum near the electric-field-driven ferroelectric dipole reorientation, and increases threefold near the Curie temperature $({T}_{c})$. Moreover, at ferroelectric saturation, the photovoltaic response exhibits clear remanent and transient effects. The transient-remanent combinations together with electric and thermal tuning possibilities indicate photoferroelectric crystals as emerging elements for photovoltaics and optoelectronics, relevant to all-optical information storage and beyond.

23. Room temperature dry processing of patterned CVD graphene devices

Abstract: We present a strategy for avoiding polymeric residues, excessive heating and solvent exposure when transforming large area transferred CVD graphene single layer films into series of planar devices. Such dry process is a key prerequisite for chemical functionalization applications or for organic electronics compatibility, and opens the possibility to integrate graphene electrodes with thermally or chemically sensitive materials, as well as substrates incompatible with lithography processing. Patterning and metal evaporation are performed through a multi-step mechanical stencils methodology, and low temperatures magneto transport measurements are used to validate devices with preserved electrical fingerprints of graphene. This is particularly critical for the argon beam milling process step. Remarkably, the Quantum Hall signature of our devices remains robust, even though defective sample edges result from the beam exposure. Shubnikov-de Hass (SdH) oscillations and weak (anti-) localization signatures of monolayer graphene confirm the excellent intrinsic properties of such processed samples, rarely observed on CVD-processed devices.

Abstract: International audience; Interparticle charge hopping severely limits the integration of colloidal nanocrystals films for optoelectronic device applications. We propose here to overcome this problem by using high aspect ratio interconnects made of wide electrodes separated by a few tens of namometers, a distance matching the size of a single nanoplatelet. The semiconducting CdSe/CdS nanoplatelet coupling with such electrodes allows an efficient electron–hole pair dissociation despite the large binding energy of the exciton, resulting in optimal photoconductance responsivity. We report the highest responsivity obtained so far for CdSe colloidal material with values reaching kA·W–1, corresponding to eight decades of enhancement compared to usual micrometer-scaled architectures. In addition, a decrease of 1 order of magnitude of the current noise is observed, revealing the reduced influence of the surface traps on transport. The nanotrench geometry provides top access to ion gel electrolyte gating, allowing for a photoresponsive transistor with 104 on/off ratio. A simple analytical model reproduces the device behavior and underlines the key parameters related to its performance.

Abstract: Atomically thin molybdenum diselenide (MoSe 2 ) is an emerging two-dimensional (2D) semiconductor with significant potential for electronic, optoelectronic, spintronic applications and a common platform for their possible integration. Tuning interface charge transport between such new 2D materials and metallic electrodes is a key issue in 2D device physics and engineering. Here, we report tunable interface charge transport in bilayer MoSe 2 field effect transistors with Ti/Au contacts showing high on/off ratio up to 10 7 at room temperature. Our experiments reveal a detailed map of transport mechanisms obtained by controlling the interface band bending profile via temperature, gate and source-drain bias voltages. This comprehensive investigation leads to demarcating regimes and tuning in transport mechanisms while controlling the interface barrier profile. The careful analysis allows us to identify thermally activated regime at low carrier density, and Schottky barrier driven mechanisms at higher carrier density demonstrating the transition from low-field direct tunneling/ thermionic emission to high-field Fowler–Nordheim tunneling. Furthermore, we show that the transition voltage V trans to Fowler–Nordheim correlates directly to the difference between the chemical potential of the metal electrode and the conduction band minimum in the 2D semiconductor, which opens up opportunities for new theoretical and experimental investigations. Our approach being generic can be extended to other 2D materials, and the possibility of tuning contact transport regimes is promising for designing MoSe 2 device applications.

26. The magnetoelectrochemical switch

Abstract: In the field of spintronics, the archetype solid-state two-terminal device is the spin valve, where the resistance is controlled by the magnetization configuration. We show here how this concept of spin-dependent switch can be extended to magnetic electrodes in solution, by magnetic control of their chemical environment. Appropriate nanoscale design allows a huge enhancement of the magnetic force field experienced by paramagnetic molecular species in solutions, which changes between repulsive and attractive on changing the electrodes' magnetic orientations. Specifically, the field gradient force created within a sub-100-nm-sized nanogap separating two magnetic electrodes can be reversed by changing the orientation of the electrodes' magnetization relative to the current flowing between the electrodes. This can result in a breaking or making of an electric nanocontact, with a change of resistance by a factor of up to 10(3). The results reveal how an external field can impact chemical equilibrium in the vicinity of nanoscale magnetic circuits.

27. The Dipole Mediated Surface Chemistry of p-Benzoquinonemonoimine Zwitterions

Abstract: This article reviews the surface adsorption of p-benzoquinonemonoimine zwitterions from the class of N-alkyldiaminoresorcinones (or 4,6-bis-dialkylaminobenzene-1,3-diones, i.e. C6H2(···NHR)2(···O)2), where R = H, R = C2H5, n-C4H9), on a variety of conducting surfaces. These small molecules with a large electrical dipole exhibit molecular orientation and packing on surfaces depending on the deposition methodology (from solution or from the vapor) as well as the substrate. What is very clear from the investigations of this class of molecules is that inter-molecular interaction is not simply driven by dipolar interactions alone, but frontier orbital symmetry as well. This is illustrated by the reversible adsorption of di-iodobenzene on molecular films of (6Z)-4-(butylamino)-6-(butyliminio)-3-oxocyclohexa-1,4-dien-1-olate C6H2(···NHR)2(···O)2 where R = n-C4H9, where it is clear that absorption is isomer specific.

Abstract: Large assemblies of self-organized aluminum nanoclusters embedded in an oxide layer are formed on graphene templates and used to build tunnel-junction devices. Unexpectedly, single-electron-transport behavior with well-defined Coulomb oscillations is observed for a record junction area of up to 100 mu m(2) containing millions of metal islands. Such graphene-metal nanocluster hybrid materials offer new prospects for single-electron electronics.

Abstract: International audience; Unique insights into magnetotransport in 20 nm ligand-free La0.67Sr0.33MnO3 perovskite nanocrystals of nearly perfect crystalline quality reveal a chemically altered 0.8 nm thick surface layer that triggers exceptionally large magnetoresistance at low temperature, independently of the spin polarization of the ferromagnetic core. This discovery shows how the nanoscale impacts magnetotransport in a material widely spread as electrode in hybrid spintronic devices.

Abstract: We present an optically induced remanent photostriction in BiFeO3, resulting from the photovoltaic effect, which is used to modify the ferromagnetism of Ni film in a hybrid BiFeO3/Ni structure. The 75% change in coercivity in the Ni film is achieved via optical and nonvolatile control. This photoferromagnetic effect can be reversed by static or ac electric depolarization of BiFeO3. Hence, the strain dependent changes in magnetic properties are written optically, and erased electrically. Light-mediated straintronics is therefore a possible approach for low-power multistate control of magnetic elements relevant for memory and spintronic applications., Report on photopolarization effect in BiFeO3 used to write magnetic properties via the remanent photostriction

Abstract: International audience; Driven by the huge potential of engineering the molecular band offset with highly dipolar molecules for improving charge injection into organic electrics, the anchoring of various N-alkyl substituted quinonoid zwitterions of formula image file: c5nj03251b-t1.tif (R = iPr, Cy, CH2CH(Et)CH2CH2CH2CH3,…) on gold surfaces is studied. The N–Au interactions result in an orthogonal arrangement of the zwitterions cores with respect to the surface, and stabilize adsorbed compact rows of molecules. IR spectroscopy is used as a straightforward diagnostic tool to validate the presence of ultra-thin molecular films. When combined with computational studies, IR measurements indicate that the presence of a CH2 group in α position to the nitrogen atom is important for a successful anchoring through N–Au interactions. The presence of such a flexible CH2 spacer, or of aryl groups, enables π-interactions with the surface, making possible the anchoring of enantiopure or sterically-hindered zwitterions. X-ray diffraction analyses indicate that the intermolecular spacing within a row of molecules can be modulated by the nature of the alkyl substituent R. This modulation is directly relevant to the electronic properties of the corresponding molecular films since these zwitterions are expected to form rows on gold surfaces similar to those observed in the bulk crystalline state.

Abstract: Electric control of magnetic properties is an important challenge for modern magnetism and spintronic development. In particular, an ability to write magnetic state electrically would be highly beneficial. Among other methods, the use of electric field induced deformation of piezoelectric elements is a promising low-energy approach for magnetization control. We investigate the system of piezoelectric substrate Pb[Zr$_x$Ti$_{1-x}$]O$_3$ with CoFe overlayers, extending the known reversible bistable electro-magnetic coupling to surface and multistate operations, adding the initial state reset possibility. Increasing the CoFe thickness improves the magnetoresistive sensitivity, but at the expenses of decreasing the strain-mediated coupling, with optimum magnetic thin film thickness of the order of 100 nm. 34. Enhancing the Molecular Signature in Molecule-Nanoparticle Networks Via Inelastic Cotunneling

Abstract: Charge transport in networks of nanoparticles linked by molecular spacers is investigated. Remarkably, in the regime where cotunneling dominates, the molecular signature of a device is strongly enhanced. We demonstrate that the resistance ratio of identical networks with different molecular spacers increases dramatically, from an initial value of 50 up to 10(5) , upon entering the cotunneling regime. Our work shows that intrinsic molecular properties can be amplified through nanoscale engineering.

Abstract: The adsorption of molecular films made of small molecules with a large intrinsic electrical dipole has been explored. The data indicate that such dipolar molecules may be used for altering the interface dipole screening at the metal electrode interface in organic electronics. More specifically, we have investigated the surface electronic spectroscopic properties of zwitterionic molecules containing 12π electrons of the p-benzoquinonemonoimine type, C(6)H(2)(···NHR)(2)(···O)(2)(R = H (1), n-C(4)H(9) (2), C(3)H(6)-S-CH(3) (3), C(3)H(6)-O-CH(3) (4), CH(2)-C(6)H(5) (5)), adsorbed on Au. These molecules are stable zwitterions by virtue of the meta positions occupied by the nitrogen and oxygen substituents on the central ring, respectively. The structures of 2-4 have been determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction and indicate that in these molecules, two chemically connected but electronically not conjugated 6π electron subunits are present, which explains their strong dipolar character. We systematically observed that homogeneous molecular films with thickness as small as 1 nm were formed on Au, which fully cover the surface, even for a variety of R substituents. Preferential adsorption toward the patterned gold areas on SiO(2) substrates was found with 4. Optimum self-assembling of 2 and 5 results in ordered close packed films, which exhibit n-type character, based on the position of the Fermi level close to the conduction band minimum, suggesting high conductivity properties. This new type of self-assembled molecular films offers interesting possibilities for engineering metal-organic interfaces, of critical importance for organic electronics.

36. Weak screening of a large dipolar molecule adsorbed on graphene

Abstract: We compare the electronic structure of a quinonoid zwitterionic type molecule adsorbed on both gold and graphene on copper substrates. This (6Z)-4-(butylamino)-6-(butyliminio)-3-oxocyclohexa-1,4-dien-1-olate, C6H2( ⋯ NHR)2( ⋯ O)2 where R = n-C4H9, film is made of small molecules with a large intrinsic dipole of 10 Debyes. We find that the photoemission and inverse photoemission final states are well screened for these dipolar molecules on gold. This is not observed when they are adsorbed on graphene on copper. This weaker screening results in a larger highest occupied molecular orbital to lowest unoccupied molecular orbital gap for the molecules on graphene.

Abstract: There is compelling evidence of electron pockets, at the Fermi level, in the band structure for an organic zwitterion molecule of the p-benzoquinonemonoimine type. The electronic structure of the zwitterion molecular film has a definite, although small, density of states evident at the Fermi level as well as a nonzero inner potential and thus is very different from a true insulator. In spite of a small Brillouin zone, significant band width is observed in the intermolecular band dispersion. The results demonstrate that Bloch's theorem applies to the wave vector dependence of the electronic band structure formed from the molecular orbitals of adjacent molecules in a molecular thin film of a p-benzoquinonemonoimine type zwitterion.

Abstract: A co-tunneling charge-transfer process dominates the electrical properties of a nanometer-sized "slice" in a nanoparticle network, which results in universal scaling of the conductance with temperature and bias voltage, as well as enhanced spintronics properties. By designing two large (10 μm) electrodes with short (60 nm) separation, access is obtained to transport dominated by charge transfer involving "nanoslices" made of three nanoparticles only. Magnetic iron oxide nanoparticle networks exhibit a magnetoresistance ratio that is not reachable by tunneling or hopping processes, thereby illustrating how such a size-matched planar device with dominant co-tunneling charge-transfer process is optimal for realizing multifunctional devices with enhanced change of conductance under external stimulus.

Abstract: International audience; Fabrication and spintronics properties of 2D–0D heterostructures are reported. Devices based on graphene (“Gr”)–aluminium nanoclusters heterostructures show robust and reproducible single‐electron transport features, in addition to spin‐dependent functionality when using a top magnetic electrode. The magnetic orientation of this single ferromagnetic electrode enables the modulation of the environmental charge experienced by the aluminium nanoclusters. This anisotropic magneto‐Coulomb effect, originating from spin–orbit coupling within the ferromagnetic electrode, provides tunable spin valve‐like magnetoresistance signatures without the requirement of spin coherent charge tunneling. These results extend the capability of Gr to act both as electrode and as a platform for the growth of 2D–0D mixed‐dimensional van der Waals heterostructures, providing magnetic functionalities in the Coulomb blockade regime on scalable spintronic devices. These heterostructures pave the way towards novel device architectures at the crossroads of 2D material physics and spin electronics.

Abstract: The predominance of interface resistance makes current crowding ubiquitous in short channel organic electronics devices but its impact on spin transport has never been considered. We investigate electrochemically doped nanoscale PBTTT short channel devices and observe the smallest reported values of crowding lengths, found for sub-100 nm electrodes separation. These observed values are nevertheless exceeding the spin diffusion lengths reported in the literature. We discuss here how current crowding can be taken into account in the framework of the Fert–Jaffrès model of spin current propagation in heterostructures, and predict that the anticipated resulting values of magnetoresistance can be significantly reduced. Current crowding therefore impacts spin transport applications and interpretation of the results on spin valve devices.

Abstract: Electrochemical realization of magnetic nanocontacts on planar substrates is detailed. Microfluidic integration allows size miniaturization, making versatile fast magnetoresistance measurements possible. The set-up can be integrated in a cryogenic head, opening the possibility to take advantage of electrochemical fabrication and transfer to vacuum environment. Initial tests are presented, showing that contacts made with thick deposits exhibit properties departing from anisotropic magnetoresistance, and mimicking early results of very large magnetoresistance values.

Abstract: We show that at the hetero-molecular interface, the molecular band offsets can be modified by either adjusting the dopant or dopant concentration of one or both molecular layers or by changing the dipole orientation at the intermolecular interface. Photoemission studies reveal the changes in electronic structure and diode devices exhibit conduction properties that are altered in response to changes to the molecular band offsets. As a demonstration, thin film copper phthalocyanine to crystalline ferroelectric copolymer poly(vinylidene fluoride with trifluoroethylene) heterojunction diodes, without additional dopants, are compared with doped polyaniline layers on the crystalline ferroelectric copolymer poly(vinylidene fluoride with trifluoroethylene).

Abstract: Organic semiconductors have generated considerable interest for their potential for creating inexpensive and flexible devices easily processed on a large scale [1-11]. However technological applications are currently limited by the low mobility of the charge carriers associated with the disorder in these materials [5-8]. Much effort over the past decades has therefore been focused on optimizing the organisation of the material or the devices to improve carrier mobility. Here we take a radically different path to solving this problem, namely by injecting carriers into states that are hybridized to the vacuum electromagnetic field. These are coherent states that can extend over as many as 10^5 molecules and should thereby favour conductivity in such materials. To test this idea, organic semiconductors were strongly coupled to the vacuum electromagnetic field on plasmonic structures to form polaritonic states with large Rabi splittings ca. 0.7 eV. Conductivity experiments show that indeed the current does increase by an order of magnitude at resonance in the coupled state, reflecting mostly a change in field-effect mobility as revealed when the structure is gated in a transistor configuration. A theoretical quantum model is presented that confirms the delocalization of the wave-functions of the hybridized states and the consequences on the conductivity. While this is a proof-of-principle study, in practice conductivity mediated by light-matter hybridized states is easy to implement and we therefore expect that it will be used to improve organic devices. Abstract: Magnetic properties of ${\mathrm{Cr}}_{2}{\mathrm{O}}_{3}$ epitaxial clusters inserted in an Fe/MgO/Fe tunnel barrier are revealed by their tunnel magnetoresistance signature. The cluster assembly has been shown in a previous work to behave as a superparamagnet when a magnetic field was applied in the plane of the tunnel junction. We here demonstrate that an external large out-of plane electric field (in the order of 0.5 GV/m) favors in-plane magnetization orientation. This is due to an electric-field-induced magnetic anisotropy along the normal to the plane, corresponding to large anisotropy fields reaching up to 2 T. The assembly of clusters is thus strictly speaking not superparamagnetic and its magnetization cannot be exactly described by a Langevin law. This is attributed either to a strain-induced enhanced magnetoelectric effect or to a voltage-induced change of the magnetic anisotropy at interfaces with MgO.

Abstract: The role of dipole-dipole interactions in the self-assembly of dipolar organic molecules on surfaces is investigated. As a model system, strongly dipolar model molecules, p-benzoquinonemonoimine zwitterions (ZI) of type C6H2(center dot center dot center dot NHR)(2)(center dot center dot center dot O)(2) on crystalline coinage metal surfaces were investigated with scanning tunneling microscopy and first principles calculations. Depending on the substrate, the molecules assemble into small clusters, nano gratings, and stripes, as well as in two-dimensional islands. The alignment of the molecular dipoles in those assemblies only rarely assumes the lowest electrostatic energy configuration. Based on calculations of the electrostatic energy for various experimentally observed molecular arrangements and under consideration of computed dipole moments of adsorbed molecules, the electrostatic energy minimization is ruled out as the driving force in the self-assembly. The structures observed are mainly the result of a competition between chemical interactions and substrate effects. The substrate's role in the self-assembly is to (i) reduce and realign the molecular dipole through charge donation and back donation involving both the molecular HOMO and LUMO, (ii) dictate the epitaxial orientation of the adsorbates, specifically so on Cu(111), and (iii) inhibit attractive forces between neighboring chains in the system ZI/Cu(111), which results in regularly spaced molecular gratings. Abstract: The near-field Coulomb interaction between a nano-emitter and a graphene monolayer results in strong F\"orster-type resonant energy transfer and subsequent fluorescence quenching. Here, we investigate the distance dependence of the energy transfer rate from individual, i) zero-dimensional CdSe/CdS nanocrystals and ii) two-dimensional CdSe/CdS/ZnS nanoplatelets to a graphene monolayer. For increasing distances $d$, the energy transfer rate from individual nanocrystals to graphene decays as $1/d^4$. In contrast, the distance dependence of the energy transfer rate from a two-dimensional nanoplatelet to graphene deviates from a simple power law, but is well described by a theoretical model, which considers a thermal distribution of free excitons in a two-dimensional quantum well. Abstract: We ﬁ nd evidence for a gradual change in the electronic properties of spin coated poly(3-hexylthio-phene) thin ﬁ lms with temperature. The conduction properties appears to be mediated by hopping conduction dominated by a low density of defects states within the highest occupied molecular or-bital to lowest unoc cupied molecular orbital gap, not by a change in band gap. The photoemission and transport measure ments indicate a loss of charge mobility or carrier concentration occurs with decreasing temperature, while the molecular conﬁ guration (through chain conjugation) also changes with temperature. The defects states identiﬁ ed by photoemission (–1.7 eV) as well as others contrib-uting to the transport properties are believed to be very heterogeneous along the polymer backbone. 1 Introduction For conducting polymers, changes in the relative orientation of aromatic rings and/or overall back-bone conﬁ guration with temperature, are commonly observed [1–4]. Such structural changes lead to re-duced π–π intermolecular interactions and/or create defects that can have a profound effect on conductiv-ity and π-band localization in the highest occupied molecular orbitals. In addition to temperature-induced structural defects, are temperature-independent chemical defects, such as missing hydrogens on aliphatic pendant groups and/or impurities. “Chemical” defects in the polymer chain may induce hole carriers im-parting a p-type character to the semiconductor resulting in an effectively smaller optical band gap, rela-tive to the highest occupied to lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (HOMO–LUMO) gap, as noted else-where [5]. If chemical defects play an important role in the conductivity of a polymer, then dramatic changes in conductivity should occur with decreasing temperature as the carrier concentration and/or mobility de-creases. Decreases in temperature can lead a “freezing” of carriers, i.e. carriers become trapped, or there is an insufﬁ cient thermal activation of carriers. This decrease in carriers or carrier mobility effectively amounts to a semiconductor to insulator transition (an increasingly better dielectric) or the classic tem-perature behavior of a semiconductor mediated by hopping conductivity. The resulting increase in insu-lating character should occur at a distinctly different transition temperature than the transitions related to the tilting of the aromatic rings of the polymer backbone (i.e., structural defects). Abstract: We have investigated the changes in the electronic structure of molecularly adsorbed orthocarborane films, as a function of Hg co-adsorption, using photoemission. The interaction between Hg and molecular orthocarborane is weak and results in the formation of some small aggregates of Hg. This behavior is very different from alkali metals interaction with molecular carborane films and the interaction of Hg with semiconducting boron carbide films. Hg doping of semiconducting boron carbide may decrease the activation barrier for intrinsic carrier mobility, but does not significantly increase the number of carriers.
