Kaon physics is at a turning point -- while the rare-kaon experiments NA62 and KOTO are in full swing, the end of their lifetime is approaching and the future experimental landscape needs to be defined. With HIKE, KOTO-II and LHCb-Phase-II on the table and under scrutiny, it is a very good moment in time to take stock and contemplate about the opportunities these experiments and theoretical developments provide for particle physics in the coming decade and beyond. Interplanetary scintillation (IPS) is a useful tool for detecting coronal mass ejections (CMEs) throughout interplanetary space. Global magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations of the heliosphere, which are usually used to predict the arrival and geo-effectiveness of CMEs, can be improved using IPS data. In this study, we demonstrate an MHD simulation that includes IPS data from multiple stations to improve CME modelling. The CMEs, which occurred on 09-10 September 2017, were observed over the period 10-12 September 2017 using the Low-Frequency Array (LOFAR) and IPS array of the Institute for Space-Earth Environmental Research (ISEE), Nagoya University, as they tracked through the inner heliosphere. We simulated CME propagation using a global MHD simulation, SUSANOO-CME, in which CMEs were modeled as spheromaks, and the IPS data were synthesised from the simulation results. The MHD simulation suggests that the CMEs merged in interplanetary space, forming complicated IPS g-level distributions in the sky map. We found that the MHD simulation that best fits both LOFAR and ISEE data provided a better reconstruction of the CMEs and a better forecast of their arrival at Earth than from measurements when these simulations were fit from the ISEE site alone. With the generalization of mobile communication systems, solicitations of all kinds in the form of messages and emails are received by users with increasing proportion of malicious ones. They are customized to pass anti-spam filters and ask the person to click or to open the joined dangerous attachment. Current filters are very inefficient against spear phishing emails. It is proposed to improve the existing filters by taking advantage of user own analysis and feedback to detect all kinds of phishing emails. The method rests upon an interface displaying different warnings to receivers. Analysis shows that users trust their first impression and are often lead to ignore warnings flagged by proposed new interactive system.

We extend our previous study of elastic pion-nucleon scattering in the framework of chiral perturbation theory by performing a combined analysis of the reactions $\pi N \to \pi N$ and $\pi N \to \pi \pi N$. The calculation is carried out to fourth order in the chiral expansion using the heavy baryon approach and the covariant formulation supplemented with a modified version of the extended on-mass-shell renormalization scheme. We demonstrate that a combined fit to experimental data in both channels leads to a reduced amount of correlations between the low-energy constants. A satisfactory description of the experimental data in both channels is obtained, which is further improved upon including tree-level contributions of the $\Delta$(1232) resonance. We also explore a possibility of using the empirical information about $\pi N$ subthreshold parameters obtained recently by means of the Roy-Steiner equations to stabilize the fits., Comment: 45 pages, 21 figures

We present the results of a third order calculation of the pion-nucleon scattering amplitude in a chiral effective field theory with pions, nucleons and delta resonances as explicit degrees of freedom. We work in a manifestly Lorentz invariant formulation of baryon chiral perturbation theory using dimensional regularization and the extended on-mass-shell renormalization scheme. In the delta resonance sector, the on mass-shell renormalization is realized as a complex-mass scheme. By fitting the low-energy constants of the effective Lagrangian to the $S$- and $P$-partial waves a satisfactory description of the phase shifts from the analysis of the Roy-Steiner equations is obtained. We predict the phase shifts for the $D$ and $F$ waves and compare them with the results of the analysis of the George Washington University group. The threshold parameters are calculated both in the delta-less and delta-full cases. Based on the determined low-energy constants, we discuss the pion-nucleon sigma term. Additionally, in order to determine the strangeness content of the nucleon, we calculate the octet baryon masses in the presence of decuplet resonances up to next-to-next-to-leading order in SU(3) baryon chiral perturbation theory. Elastic pion-nucleon scattering is analyzed in the framework of chiral perturbation theory up to fourth order within the heavy-baryon expansion and a covariant approach based on an extended on-mass-shell renormalization scheme. We discuss in detail the renormalization of the various low-energy constants and provide explicit expressions for the relevant $\beta$-functions and the finite subtractions of the power-counting breaking terms within the covariant formulation. To estimate the theoretical uncertainty from the truncation of the chiral expansion, we employ an approach which has been successfully applied in the most recent analysis of the nuclear forces. This allows us to reliably extract the relevant low-energy constants from the available scattering data at low energy. The obtained results provide a clear evidence that the breakdown scale of the chiral expansion for this reaction is related to the $\Delta$-resonance. The explicit inclusion of the leading contributions of the $\Delta$-isobar is demonstrated to substantially increase the range of applicability of the effective field theory. The resulting predictions for the phase shifts are in an excellent agreement with the ones from the recent Roy-Steiner-equation analysis of pion-nucleon scattering.

The Righi-Leduc effect refers to the thermal analogue of the Hall effect, for which the electric current is replaced by the heat current and the electric field by the temperature gradient. In both cases, the magnetic field generates a transverse force that deviates the carriers (electron, phonon, magnon) in the direction perpendicular to the current. In a ferromagnet, the magnetization plays the role of the magnetic field, and the corresponding effect is called anomalous Hall effect. Furthermore, a second transverse contribution due to the anisotropy, the planar Hall effect, is superimposed to the anomalous Hall effect. We report experimental evidence of the thermal counterpart of the Hall effects in ferromagnets, namely the magnon Hall effect (or equivalently the anomalous Righi-Leduc effect) and the planar Righi-Leduc effect, measured on ferromagnets that are either electrical conductor (NiFe) or insulator (YIG). The study shows the universal character of these new thermokinetic effects, related to the intrinsic chirality of the anisotropic ferromagnetic degrees of freedom., Comment: Letter (12 pages preprint format) and Supplementary materials (13 pages)

We solve three-nucleon Faddeev equations with nucleon-nucleon and three-nucleon forces derived consistently in the framework of chiral perturbation theory at next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order in the chiral expansion. In this first investigation we include only matrix elements of the three-nucleon force for partial waves with the total two-nucleon (three-nucleon) angular momenta up to 3 (5/2). Low-energy neutron-deuteron elastic scattering and deuteron breakup reaction are studied. Emphasis is put on Ay puzzle in elastic scattering and cross sections in symmetric-space-star and neutron-neutron quasi-free-scattering breakup configurations, for which large discrepancies between data and theory have been reported., Comment: 22 pages, 7 figures

The reaction pi N -> pi pi N is studied at tree level up to next-to-leading order in the framework of manifestly covariant baryon chiral perturbation theory with explicit Delta(1232) degrees of freedom. Using total cross section data to determine the relevant low-energy constants, predictions are made for various differential as well as total cross sections at higher energies. A detailed comparison of results based on the heavy-baryon and relativistic formulations of chiral perturbation theory with and without explicit Delta degrees of freedom is given., Comment: 30 pages, 13 figures

Isospin breaking in the Kl4 form factors induced by the difference between charged and neutral pion masses is studied. Starting from suitably subtracted dispersion representations, the form factors are constructed in an iterative way up to two loops in the low-energy expansion by implementing analyticity, crossing, and unitarity due to two-meson intermediate states. Analytical expressions for the phases of the two-loop form factors of the K\pm -> pi^+ pi^- e^\pm nu_e channel are given, allowing one to connect the difference of form-factor phase shifts measured experimentally (out of the isospin limit) and the difference of S- and P-wave pi-pi phase shifts studied theoretically (in the isospin limit). The isospin-breaking correction consists of the sum of a universal part, involving only pi-pi rescattering, and a process-dependent contribution, involving the form factors in the coupled channels. The dependence on the two S-wave scattering lengths a_0^0 and a_0^2 in the isospin limit is worked out in a general way, in contrast to previous analyses based on one-loop chiral perturbation theory. The latter is used only to assess the subtraction constants involved in the dispersive approach. The two-loop universal and process-dependent contributions are estimated and cancel partially to yield an isospin-breaking correction close to the one-loop case. The recent results on the phases of K^\pm -> pi^+ pi^- e^\pm nu_e form factors obtained by the NA48/2 collaboration at the CERN SPS are reanalysed including this isospin-breaking correction to extract values for the scattering lengths a_0^0 and a_0^2, as well as for low-energy constants and order parameters of two-flavour ChPT., Comment: 48 pages, 7 figures

The first two non-trivial moments of the distribution of the topological charge (or gluonic winding number), i.e., the topological susceptibility and the fourth cumulant, can be computed in lattice QCD simulations and exploited to constrain the pattern of chiral symmetry breaking. We compute these two topological observables at next-to-leading order in three-flavour Chiral Perturbation Theory, and we discuss the role played by the eta propagation in these expressions. For hierarchies of light-quark masses close to the physical situation, we show that the fourth cumulant has a much better sensitivity than the topological susceptibility to the three-flavour quark condensate, and thus constitutes a relevant tool to determine the pattern of chiral symmetry breaking in the limit of three massless flavours. We provide the complete formulae for the two topological observables in the isospin limit, and predict their values in the particular setting of the recent analysis of the RBC/UKQCD collaboration. We show that a combination of the topological susceptibility and the fourth cumulant is able to pin down the three-flavour condensate in a particularly clean way in the case of three degenerate quarks., Comment: 31 pages, 7 figures. We analyze the low-energy spin structure of the nucleon in a covariant effective field theory with explicit spin-3/2 degrees of freedom to third order in the small scale expansion. Using the available data on the strong and electromagnetic width of the Delta-resonance, we give parameter-free predictions for various spin-polarizabilities and moments of spin structure functions. We find an improved description of the nucleon spin structure at finite photon virtualities for some observables and point out the necessity of a fourth order calculation., Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures

Using the language of non-relativistic effective Lagrangians, we formulate a systematic framework for the calculation of resonance matrix elements in lattice QCD. The generalization of the L\"uscher-Lellouch formula for these matrix elements is derived. We further discuss in detail the procedure of the analytic continuation of the resonance matrix elements into the complex energy plane and investigate the infinite-volume limit.

Using effective field theory methods, we discuss the extraction of the mass and width of the scalar mesons f0(980) and a0(980) from the finite-volume spectrum in lattice QCD. Several lattice collaborations performing simulations with 2+1 light dynamical quarks have experienced difficulties in fitting their data with standard Nf=3 chiral expansions at next-to-leading order, yielding low values of the quark condensate and/or the decay constant in the Nf=3 chiral limit. A reordering of these expansions seems required to analyse these data in a consistent way. We discuss such a reordering, known as Resummed Chiral Perturbation Theory, in the case of pseudoscalar masses and decay constants, pion and kaon electromagnetic form factors and Kl3} form factors. We show that it provides a good fit of the recent results of two lattice collaborations (PACS-CS and RBC/UKQCD). We describe the emerging picture for the pattern of chiral symmetry breaking, marked by a strong dependence of the observables on the strange quark mass and thus a significant difference between chiral symmetry breaking in the Nf=2 and Nf=3 chiral limits. We discuss the consequences for the ratio of decay constants F_K/F_pi and the Kl3 form factor at vanishing momentum transfer., Comment: 31 pages. Published version

Using the published KTeV samples of K_L --> pi^{\pm} e^{\mp} nu and K_L --> pi^{\pm} mu^{\mp} nu decays [1], we perform a reanalysis of the scalar and vector form factors based on the dispersive parameterization [2,3]. We obtain phase space integrals I^e_K = 0.15446 \pm 0.00025 and I^{mu}_K = 0.10219 \pm 0.00025. For the scalar form factor parameterization, the only free parameter is the normalized form factor value at the Callan-Treiman point (C); our best fit results in ln C = 0.1915 \pm 0.0122. We also study the sensitivity of C to different parametrizations of the vector form factor. The results for the phase space integrals and C are then used to make tests of the Standard Model. We calculate the self-energy of the Delta (1232) resonance in a finite volume, using chiral effective field theory with explicit spin-3/2 fields. The calculations are performed up-to-and-including fourth order in the small scale expansion and yield an explicit parameterization of the energy spectrum of the interacting pion-nucleon pair in a finite box in terms of both the quark mass and the box size L. The standard model can be interpreted as the leading order of a Low-Energy Effective Theory (LEET) invariant under a higher non linearly realized symmetry $S_{nat}\supset SU(2)_W \times U(1)_Y$ equipped with a systematic power counting. Within the minimal version of this ``not quite decoupling'' LEET, the dominant non-standard effect appears at next-to-leading order (NLO) and is a modification of the couplings of fermions to W and Z. In particular, the coupling of right-handed quarks to Z is modified and a direct coupling of right-handed quarks to W emerges. Charged right-handed lepton currents are forbidden by an additional discrete symmetry in the lepton sector originally designed to suppress Dirac neutrino masses. A complete NLO analysis of experimental constraints on these modified couplings is presented. The Solar Mass Ejection Imager (SMEI) views nearly every point on the sky once every 102 minutes and can detect point sources as faint as R~10th magnitude. Therefore, SMEI can detect or provide upper limits for the optical afterglow from gamma-ray bursts in the tens of minutes after the burst when different shocked regions may emit optically. We show that the Q-box expansion of nuclear many-body physics can be applied in nuclear effective field theory with explicit pions and external sources. We establish the corresponding power counting and give an algorithm for the construction of a hermitean and energy-independent potential for arbitrary scattering processes on nucleons and nuclei to a given order in the chiral expansion. The shape of the electron energy spectrum in 3H beta-decay permits a direct assay of the absolute scale of the neutrino mass; a highly accurate theoretical description of the electron energy spectrum is necessary to the empirical task. We update Sirlin's calculation of the outer radiative correction to nuclear beta-decay to take into account the non-zero energy resolution of the electron detector. In previous 3H beta-decay studies the outer radiative corrections were neglected all together; only Coulomb corrections to the spectrum were included. This neglect artificially pushes m_nu^2 < 0 in a potentially significant way. Near threshold neutral pion electroproduction on the deuteron is studied in the framework of heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory. We include the next-to-leading order corrections to the three-body contributions. We find an improved description of the total and differential cross section data measured at MAMI. We consider radiative \beta--decay of the neutron in heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory, with an extension including explicit \Delta degrees of freedom. We compute the photon energy spectrum as well as the photon polarization; both observables are dominated by the electron bremsstrahlung contribution. Nucleon-structure effects not encoded in the weak coupling constants g_A and g_V are determined at next-to-leading order in the chiral expansion, and enter at the {\cal O}(0.5%)-level, making a sensitive test of the Dirac structure of the weak currents possible., Comment: 11 pages, 4 eps figures, misprints fixed, to appear in Phys Lett B

Near threshold neutral pion electroproduction on the deuteron is studied in the framework of baryon chiral perturbation theory at next-to-leading order in the chiral expansion. We develop the multipole decomposition for pion production off spin-1 particles appropriate for the threshold region. The existing data at photon virtuality k^2 = -0.1 GeV^2 can be described satisfactorily.
