Abstract

Our understanding of radiation-induced cellular damage has greatly improved over the past few decades. Despite this progress, there are still many obstacles to fully understand how radiation interacts with biologically relevant cellular components, such as DNA, to cause observable end points such as cell killing. Damage in DNA is identified as a major route of cell killing. One hurdle when modeling biological effects is the difficulty in directly comparing results generated by members of different research groups. Multiple Monte Carlo codes have been developed to simulate damage induction at the DNA scale, while at the same time various groups have developed models that describe DNA repair processes with varying levels of detail. These repair models are intrinsically linked to the damage model employed in their development, making it difficult to disentangle systematic effects in either part of the modeling chain. These modeling chains typically consist of track-structure Monte Carlo simulations of the physical interactions creating direct damages to DNA, followed by simulations of the production and initial reactions of chemical species causing so-called "indirect" damages. After the induction of DNA damage, DNA repair models combine the simulated damage patterns with biological models to determine the biological consequences of the damage. To date, the effect of the environment, such as molecular oxygen (normoxic vs. hypoxic), has been poorly considered. We propose a new standard DNA damage (SDD) data format to unify the interface between the simulation of damage induction in DNA and the biological modeling of DNA repair processes, and introduce the effect of the environment (molecular oxygen or other compounds) as a flexible parameter. Such a standard greatly facilitates inter-model comparisons, providing an ideal environment to tease out model assumptions and identify persistent, underlying mechanisms. Through inter-model comparisons, this unified standard has the potential to greatly advance our understanding of the underlying mechanisms of radiation-induced DNA damage and the resulting observable biological effects when radiation parameters and/or environmental conditions change.

Abstract

Diversity loss can affect the ability of forests to sequester and store carbon from the atmosphere. The capture of atmospheric carbon and its storage in the biomass of organisms and in the ecosystem’s soils are key to mitigating the effects of climate change. Mammals contribute to soil carbon concentration in the northern Amazon, by generating organic remains through trophic interactions with plants and other animals. This thesis investigated whether mammal diversity, interacting with tree diversity and generating such soil organic inputs, affects the content and type of soil organic matter (SOM) and whether these diversity effects on SOM composition differ between mammal and tree communities. The first objective was to test whether both the content and type of SOMaccumulated vary with mammal and tree richness because of possible compositional differences between the organic inputs derived from plants versus animals.

Abstract

Perivascular epithelioid cell neoplasms (PEComas) are a tumor family defined as such just a couple of decades ago. They make an unusual group of neoplasms, which can appear in different locations of the organism. PEComas are usually considered to be benign tumors, but there are some histological features that make some subgroups suspicious of malignancy. The treatment of these tumors consist in their surgical resection, with no current effective complementary oncological treatment known. We present the clinical case of a woman that underwent surgery for a resection of a hepatic lesion labeled afterwards as a PEComa with malignant features.

Abstract

The COVID-19 outbreak has significantly affected the business activities of the national, regional, and global economies. In the Philippines, the government had to impose an Enhanced Community Quarantine (ECQ) to contain the spread of the virus. This domestic response caused immediate business closure and limitation of business operations, especially among Micro-, Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (MSMEs). The food service sector was among the severely impacted business sectors and was considered to face a high risk of closures and job disruptions. The aim of the study was to develop a business strategy that would potentially mitigate the challenges faced by the MSMEs of the foodservice sector. One hundred and sixty-four respondents answered the online questionnaire consisting of 35 questions regarding the factors that influence the recovery of the food service MSMEs amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The obtained results from the Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) identified that working capital, customer footfall, and cash reserves have a direct impact on business continuity. In addition, the developed business strategy and policy recommendations would enhance the resilience and business sustainability of the food service MSMEs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Los tumores de células neoplásicas perivasculares epitelioides (PEComas) son una familia de tumoraciones caracterizada apenas un par de décadas antes. Componen un grupo inusual de neoplasias, que puede aparecer en distintas localizaciones del organismo. Por lo general, los PEComas se consideran tumores benignos, pero hay ciertas características histológicas que hacen de algunos subgrupos lesiones sospechosas de una malformación maligna. El tratamiento de estos tumores consiste en la resección quirúrgica, pero no existe tratamiento oncológico por completo eficaz. Las micobacterias poseen una gran importancia clínica, ya que son agentes causales de diversas enfermedades humanas con una importante morbilidad y mortalidad. Proponemos estudiar las enfermedades por micobacterias en el Área Sanitaria de Santiago de Compostela, con el objetivo del diagnóstico rápido y el estudio de resistencias en M.tuberculosis complex, la identificación molecular y sistematización de las micobacteriosis, la relación epidemiológica entre tuberculosis y las micobacteriosis, y el estado actual de la lepra.

Abstract

Introduccion Streptococcus pneumoniae es la causa mas frecuente de neumonia extrahospitalaria y meningitis en adultos, de otitis media bacteriana en ninos y origina un tercio de sinusitis agudas. La penicilina ha sido el tratamiento de eleccion durante casi 50 anos. De forma progresiva han aparecido neumococos resistentes a penicilina en todo el mundo. Nuestro objetivo ha sido conocer la epidemiologia, patron de resistencias y serotipos de las infecciones neumococicas en nuestro medio. Metodos Se han recogido los aislados de Streptococcus pneumoniae del Servicio de Microbiologia Clinica del Hospital Universitario Virgen de la Victoria de Malaga, durante 2 anos (mayo de 1997 a mayo de 1999). Este hospital, dotado con 750 camas, cubre una poblacion de 407.480 habitantes, con un numero total de ingresos de 21.500 anuales. La identificacion se realizo por procedimientos habituales, la serotipia mediante la tecnica de Quellung y el estudio de sensibilidad antibiotica por disco-placa y E-test. Resultados Se diagnostico infeccion neumococica en 170 pacientes en los 2 anos de seguimiento. Las muestras a partir de las cuales se realizaron los aislamientos fueron 82 esputos, 43 hemocultivos, 32 aspirados bronquiales, 6 liquidos cefalorraquideos y 7 exudados. El origen fue extrahospitalario en el 88% de casos. La estancia media hospitalaria fue de 12 dias y la letalidad del 12,4%. El 43,4% de las cepas fueron resistentes a penicilina y el 20% a cefotaxima. Se encontraron 31 serotipos distintos, 12 de los cuales representaron el 77% de aislamientos. Los serotipos 19, 3 y 6B son mas frecuentes en las infecciones extrahospitalarias, mientras que el 9V y el 23F lo son en las nosocomiales. Las cepas de S. pneumoniae resistentes a penicilina pertenecen a 19 serotipos distintos. Los mas importantes son 6B, 9V, 14, 19 y 23F. Conclusiones La infeccion neumococica, de origen fundamentalmente extrahospitalario como era de esperar, se caracteriza en nuestro medio por su importante letalidad, alta resistencia a la penicilina y presencia del factor inmunodepresion como predisponente.

Abstract

[EN] Composting is considered an appropriate approach for stabilising and sanitising pig slurry, incorporating its nutrients into the soil-plant system. However, pig slurry compost (PSC) can be highly saline with high concentrations of Cu and Zn, and can emit greenhouse gases (GHGs) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs), when not properly stabilised. In order to produce substrates with adequate characteristics for containerised soilless plant production, PSC must be mixed with other materials. In this study two materials were chosen: coir (coconut fibre; CF), as the most popular material after peat for this purpose, and biochar (BCH), a novel material in this scenario. Substrates were prepared by mixing PSC:CF and PSC:BCH at 60:40, 40:60, 20:80 and 0:100 (% v:v) ratios and their physical and chemical characteristics, their emission of GHG and VOC and seed germination and growth of two species grown for non-food purposes (milk thistle (Sylibum marianum L.) and sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.)) were studied. The results showed that BCH was more adequate than CF for the preparation of substrates with PSC, enabling seed germination and plant growth by decreasing the EC and available Cu and Zn contents, hence limiting phytotoxic effects, whilst also reducing CO2, NO and VOC emissions. Toxic effects appeared in plants grown in substrates prepared with PSC at proportions greater than 20%; whilst at low rate (up to 20%) the beneficial effects might have been caused by the nutrients (N, P and K) supplied by PSC to the crops. Abstract

En este trabajo se realiza una historiografía de la arqueología patagónica sobre los modelos teóricos desarrollados para explicar la evolución de la diversidad y variabilidad social en la prehistoria patagónica. Se revisarán los argumentos que tradicionalmente fueron propuestos tanto desde la arqueología como desde la etnología para identificar las unidades culturales utilizadas para la definición de las identidades étnicas. Esta revisión historiográfica se realiza con el objetivo de comprender la relación establecida entre procesos de construcción de la diversidad, arqueología y contexto político., This paper presents a historiography of the studies in Patagonian archeology about the developed of theoretical models used to explain the evolution of diversity and social variability in prehistoric Patagonia. We analyze archaeological and ethnographical traditional arguments proposed to identify cultural units used to define ethnic identities. The purpose of this historiographical revision is to understand the relationship between construction of diversity, archaeology and political context.
