Abstract

We study the dimensional reduction for a $(3+1)$-dimensional Lorentz Violating Lagrangian in the matter and gauge sectors in a Supersymmetric scenario. We thus obtain an effective model for photons induced by the effects of supersymmetry in our framework with Lorentz-symmetry violating. This model is discussed in connection with the attainment of a static potential between charged particles. Our calculation is done within the framework of the gauge-invariant, but path-dependent variable formalism. Abstract

Optical Doppler shift demonstration experiments are not a simple task since the light source cannot usually be moved in a sufficiently smooth and uniform manner to keep the level of noise well below of that of the signal. For that reason most demonstration experiments are usually performed with sound or with microwaves. Previous work have been reported using a moving mirror in order to produce a moving light source, but small perturbation of its trajectory, as small as the optical wavelength, can produce a large noise. Using a rotating mirror, in which one beam is reflected from the advancing side and the other beam is reflected from the receding part of a rotating mirror, can overcome many of the noise generating effects. Abstract

Despite the youthfulness of hybrid halide perovskite solar cells, their efficiencies are currently comparable to commercial silicon and have surpassed quantum-dots solar cells. Yet, the scalability of these devices is a challenge due to their low reproducibility and stability under environmental conditions. However, the techniques reported to date to tackle such issues recurrently involve the use of solvent methods that would further complicate their transfer to industry. Herein a reliable alternative relaying in the implementation of an ultrathin plasma polymer as a passivation interface between the electron transport layer and the hybrid perovskite layer is presented. Such a nanoengineered interface provides solar devices with increased long-term stability under ambient conditions. Thus, without involving any additional encapsulation step, the cells retain more than 80% of their efficiency after being exposed to the ambient atmosphere for more than 1000 h. Moreover, this plasma polymer passivation strategy significantly improves the coverage of the mesoporous scaffold by the perovskite layer, providing the solar cells with enhanced performance, with a champion efficiency of 19.2%, a remarkable value for Li-free standard mesoporous n-i-p architectures, as well as significantly improved reproducibility.

Abstract

Granulocytic myeloid-derived suppressor cells (G-MDSCs) promote tumor growth and immunosuppression in multiple myeloma (MM). However, their phenotype is not well established for accurate monitoring or clinical translation. We aimed to provide the phenotypic profile of G-MDSCs based on their prognostic significance in MM, immunosuppressive potential, and molecular program. The preestablished phenotype of G-MDSCs was evaluated in bone marrow samples from controls and MM patients using multidimensional flow cytometry; surprisingly, we found that CD11b+CD14−CD15+CD33+HLADR− cells overlapped with common eosinophils and neutrophils, which were not expanded in MM patients. Therefore, we relied on automated clustering to unbiasedly identify all granulocytic subsets in the tumor microenvironment: basophils, eosinophils, and immature, intermediate, and mature neutrophils. In a series of 267 newly diagnosed MM patients (GEM2012MENOS65 trial), only the frequency of mature neutrophils at diagnosis was significantly associated with patient outcome, and a high mature neutrophil/T-cell ratio resulted in inferior progression-free survival (P < .001). Upon fluorescence-activated cell sorting of each neutrophil subset, T-cell proliferation decreased in the presence of mature neutrophils (0.5-fold; P = .016), and the cytotoxic potential of T cells engaged by a BCMA×CD3-bispecific antibody increased notably with the depletion of mature neutrophils (fourfold; P = .0007). Most interestingly, RNA sequencing of the 3 subsets revealed that G-MDSC–related genes were specifically upregulated in mature neutrophils from MM patients vs controls because of differential chromatin accessibility. Taken together, our results establish a correlation between the clinical significance, immunosuppressive potential, and transcriptional network of well-defined neutrophil subsets, providing for the first time a set of optimal markers (CD11b/CD13/CD16) for accurate monitoring of G-MDSCs in MM.

Abstract

Carboxymaltose iron (Ferinject®) is a formulation for intravenous (iv) administration, used for the treatment of iron deficiency anemia and/or iron deficiency when oral administration of iron is not effective or due to intolerance. Its safety profile is excellent with few, but not nonexistent, side effects. Hypophosphatemia has been described as one of them. It is usually mild, transient and asymptomatic. However, in some cases it may be accompanied by nausea, asthenia, in addition to muscular and neurological symptoms and hematological alterations. It is, therefore, a potentially serious adverse effect whose prevalence is unknown and which requires high clinical suspicion to be detected.

Abstract

Whether large-scale or small farms dominate, a county's farm structure is influenced not only by changes within farming but also by key factors such as nonfarm economic activity, geography, and population growth. Large-farm counties where agriculture dominates the economy are concentrated in the Plains, Midwest, and Mississippi Delta. Small-farm counties, with larger, more diversified economic bases, are concentrated in the Southeast. However, more than 50% of the nation's counties are unclassified, presenting local planners with special challenges in charting development either toward agriculture or to a more diversified economic base. Unclassified counties that tend to have small-farm characteristics are found mostly in New England and scattered parts of the Southeast and West. Those tending to have large-farm characteristics are usually located adjacent to large-farm counties. This report identifies which counties are dominated by small- or large-farm agriculture as well as a large group, termed unclassified, which could go either way; provides models to differentiate county types; maps and describes developing subregions; and presents implications for rural America. Abstract

Rural areas are hard-pressed to finance education, because incomes are lower and fiscal resources are less available. Problems in crop farming, energy mining, and textile manufacturing counties are taking their toll on rural Americans.
