La estimación de biomasa aérea de pastos contribuye a realizar un manejo eficiente y sostenible de los agostaderos. El objetivo del presente estudio fue generar nuevas ecuaciones para estimar la biomasa aérea de pastos presentes en agostaderos, en Nuevo León, México, basado en datos colectados del total (n=745) de los individuos de las cinco especies de pastos: Cenchrus ciliaris Linnaeus, Pappophorum bicolor Fourn, Aristida purpurea Nutt, Tridens texanus Watson y Paspalum pubiflorum Fourn presentes en las parcelas de muestreo. Utilizando la altura máxima y la de los tallos vegetativos, los diámetros aéreo, basal y comprimido, y volúmenes medidos en cada uno de los individuos colectados, se generaron ecuaciones lineales (stepwise) y no lineales, para estimar la biomasa aérea (base materia seca) de los pastos cortados a ras de suelo. Se seleccionaron seis ecuaciones generales con el mejor ajuste estadístico para el total de las especies colectadas. La ecuación general III tuvo los mejores valores de R2=0.88 y AIC=3079, utilizando las cinco variables evaluadas. La ecuación general IV estimó con R2=0.86 y AIC= 3530, utilizando solo la variable de diámetro comprimido. Las ecuaciones específicas seleccionadas estimaron la biomasa aérea de los pastos Cenchrus ciliaris (R2=0.88, r=0.94), Pappophorum bicolor (R2=0.86, r=0.92), Aristida purpurea (R2=0.92, r=0.96), Tridens texanus (R2=0.91, r=0.96), y Paspalum pubiflorum (R2=0.93, r=0.97). Las nuevas ecuaciones son una alternativa confiable para estimar indirectamente la biomasa aérea de los pastos de los agostaderos del noreste de México, de forma más rápida y menos costosa que el método tradicional.

Utilizando el método de producción de gas in vitro, de la Universidad Hohenheim, Alemania, se caracterizó el valor nutricional de forrajes de pasto Buffel (Cenchrus ciliaris L.), de las arbustivas chaparro prieto (Acacia rigidula Benth.) y huizache (Acacia farnesiana L. Willd), y de tres suplementos (grano de sorgo, harina de soya y cáscara de naranja), para la alimentación de pequeños rumiantes del noreste de México. La información del contenido nutricional y de energía metabolizable determinados de seis muestras de cada forraje y suplemento puede contribuir a formular dietas que mejoren el comportamiento productivo y la sostenibilidad de sistemas pecuarios.

The Texas white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus texanus) is a selective and opportunistic ruminant that can consume over 100 plant species in its diet throughout the year. However, the white-tailed deer’s diet is made up of less than 10 species, mainly shrub species, in southern Texas and northeastern Mexico. The objectives of the study were to compare dry matter-based consumption and the shrub selectivity index for white-tailed deer and to study the relationships between some physical and chemical characteristics of shrubs that may affect consumption. A total of four white-tailed deer were involved. Shrub branches were offered for 15 minutes. Leucaena leucocephala, Acacia farnesiana and Acacia rigidula were the most consumed species; furthermore, a negative relationship between iron content and consumption rate, and a negative relationship between consumption and stem percentage were found.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of recombinant bovine somatotropin (rBST) on ovarian activity and quantity and quality of transferable embryos in goats during seasonal anoestrus. We used 30 multiparous goats synchronized with goats synchronized with CIDR short protocol and superovulated with FSHp, assigned to three treatments (n = 10): T1 = control, without rBST, T2 = 100 mg rBST y T3 = 200 mg rBST. Quantitative variables were analyzed using the Kruskal-Wallis test, and the percentage of estrus and embryos recovered by the Chi-square test. A greater number of CL were registered in goats assigned to T3, followed by T2 (p = 0.002). The number of recovered embryos and blastocysts was higher in T3 (p = 0.001). The morula number was higher in T1 (p = 0.001). The application of rBST at the onset of estrus increases ovarian activity and the number of transferable embryos in goats., Resumen: El objetivo del estudio fue evaluar el efecto de la somatotropina bovina recombinante (rBST) en la actividad ovárica, cantidad y calidad de embriones transferibles en cabras durante el anestro estacional. Se utilizaron 30 cabras multíparas sincronizadas con protocolo corto de CIDR y superovuladas con FSHp, asignadas a tres tratamientos (n = 10): T1 = control, sin rBST, T2 = 100 mg rBST y T3 = 200 mg rBST. Las variables cuantitativas se analizaron mediante prueba de Kruskal-Wallis; el porcentaje de estro y de embriones recuperados, mediante prueba de Chi - cuadrada. Las cabras del T3 tuvieron mayor número de CL, seguidas del T2 (p = 0.002). El número de embriones recuperados y de blastocitos fue mayor en T3 (p = 0.001). El número de mórulas fue mayor en T1 (p = 0.001). La aplicación de rBST al inicio del estro incrementa la actividad ovárica y la cantidad de embriones transferibles en cabras.

This study aimed to evaluate the effect of reinserting controlled internal drug release (CIDR) devices after fixed-time artificial insemination (FTAI) on pregnancy rates in goats. Oestrus was synchronized with a short (5 days) CIDR protocol, and FTAI was conducted 54 hours after CIDR removal. According to the reinsertion of CIDR after FTAI, goats were assigned to three treatments: G0 control group (n=29), no CIDR reinsertion; G7 group (n=27), CIDR reinserted 7 days; G14 group (n=29), CIDR reinserted 14 days. Blood samples were collected to determine progesterone levels. Oestrus appearance (92.9%), interval of CIDR removal to oestrus (IRE=34.1±1.1 hours), interval of oestrus onset to artificial insemination (IEAI= 20.2±1.0 hours), mean duration of oestrus (38.4±1.4 hours), and pregnancy rates (61.0%) were similar (P>.05) among groups. Progesterone concentrations were higher (P<.05) in G7 and G14 than G0 goats. G7 goats had lower (P<.05) oestrus rate, after CIDR reinsertion, than G0 and G14 goats. Overall pregnancy rate was similar (P>.05) for all groups. In conclusion, reinsertion of CIDR for 7 or 14 days after a short oestrus synchronization protocol and FTAI did not increase the overall pregnancy rate of goats.

Se realizaron tres experimentos (2 en época seca y 1 en época de lluvias) utilizando 96 becerros (Simmental X Cebú) para evaluar el efecto del acondicionamiento realizado durante 112 días (del día 28 predestete al día 84 posdestete). En cuatro períodos de 28 días cada uno, se evaluó peso y condición corporal de los animales, nitrógeno ureico (NU) y glucosa (GS) en suero sanguíneo, así como la incidencia de enfermedades (IE) de becerros en pastoreo. Resultados de peso corporal, ganancia de peso (GDP) acumulativa, NU y GS se evaluaron con ANOVA en un diseño factorial de 2 tratamientos x 2 sexos; IE se analizó con Ji-cuadrada. No hubo diferencia de peso (P=0.552) ni de CC (P=0.891) de las vacas debido a tratamientos. No hubo interacción acondicionamiento x sexo (P= 0.853) ni efecto de sexo (P=0.586) sobre el crecimiento de becerros (media=357 g/día). El acondicionamiento originó mejor GDP (507 vs 281 g/día; P=0.001) en la época seca y menor IE (P=0.001) que el tratamiento testigo. En época de lluvias el acondicionamiento incrementó 31 % el crecimiento en 112 días respecto al testigo (370 vs 281 g/día; P=0.026). Las concentraciones de NU (P=0.425) y GS (P=0.270) fueron similares entre tratamientos. En conclusión, el acondicionamiento de becerros mejoró la GDP posdestete, redujo la incidencia de enfermedades en becerros, y la disminución de peso y condición corporal en sus madres, durante la época seca. Objective. Evaluate the effect of the inclusion of different levels of fresh lemon pulp (FLP) was determined as a substitute of sorghum grain in the feeding of hair sheep in parameters of daily weight gain (DWG), daily food consumption (DFC), and feed conversion (FC), the nutritional composition of the ration was also determined. Materials and methods. The study was carried out using 20 hair ewes individually fed on a period of 75 days. The treatments were as follows: T1=0% FLP; T2=10% FLP; T3=20% FLP; and T4=30% FLP based on DM. A totally randomized design was used with five replicates per treatment. Concentrate and FLP were offered ad libitum as a mixture, registering the amounts of feed offered and rejected daily. Body weight was registered every 21 days for the DWG and analysis of nutritional composition of rations was performed. And for an analysis of daily food consumption. The data were evaluated through ANOVA in an entirely randomized design. Results. There was no meaningful difference (p>0.05) for the DWG that scored 97, 108, 103 and 103 g or for the FC that scored 9.62, 8.68, 9.31 and 10.23, respectively. Evaluar el efecto de la inclusión de diferentes niveles de pulpa fresca de limón (PFL), como sustituto del grano de sorgo en la alimentación de corderas de pelo, sobre los parámetros de ganancia diaria de peso (GDP), consumo diario de alimento (CDA, base materia seca, MS) y conversión alimenticia (CAL), y se determinó la composición bromatológica de las raciones. Materiales y métodos. El estudio se realizó, utilizando 20 corderas de pelo, alimentadas individualmente durante un periodo de 75 días, bajo condiciones de estabulación. Los tratamientos fueron: T1=0% PFL; T2=10% PFL; T3=20% PFL; y T4=30% PFL con base a MS. Se utilizó un diseño completamente al azar con cinco repeticiones por tratamiento. El concentrado y la PFL fueron ofrecidos de manera mezclada y a libre acceso, pesando el alimento ofrecido y rechazado diariamente, con pesajes cada 21 días para la GDP. Se realizó un análisis de composición nutricional de las raciones. Los datos se evaluaron mediante un ANOVA en un diseño completamente al azar. Resultados . No se encontró diferencia significativa (p>0.05) para la GDP que fueron de 97, 108, 103 y 103 g y las CAL fueron de 9.62, 8.68, 9.31 y 10.23, respectivamente, para cada tratamiento. Se observó un CDA con base en MS, mayor (p<0.05) para T4 al sustituir el sorgo hasta el 30%. Conclusiones. La PFL es una alternativa para sustituir parcial o totalmente a los granos en raciones para corderas de pelo, sin disminuir la productividad en los parámetros evaluados.

Estrus synchronization of 21 ewes was carried out using intravaginal sponges (60 mg of medroxyprogesterone acetate, Sincrogest®-Sanfer, Mexico) for 14 days. 7 ewes were randomly assigned to one of the three treatments: T1, 80 mg; T2, 120 mg; T3, 140 mg of porcine follicle stimulating (pFSH) (Folltropin-p®-Bioniche, Canada) administered on day 12 after sponge insertion. The dose was divided in decreasing doses; second and third day representing 50 to 75% and 25 to 33% of the first day dose, respectively. At the beginning of superovulation treatment, each ewe received 5 mg of dinoprost tromethamine (1 ml of Lutalyse® Pfizer, Mexico). An effect of pFSH level was observed on the interval from sponge removal and the onset of estrus (REI) (P < 0.01), with a difference of 13.5 h between ewes from treatment 2 and 3. The number of follicles (F), number of collected embryos (CE) and transferable embryos (TE) (P < 0.05) was also different among treatments, with highest values observed in T3 (3.0 ± 0.6 for CE and 2.3 ± 0.5 for TE). Embryo recovery rate was in average 66.5%, (P > 0.05) of CL observed. Further investigation is guaranteed to evaluate the effect of pFSH doses on estrus synchronization for selected breeding seasons
