We present a near-infrared imaging polarimetric study of the pre-planetary nebula: Frosty Leo. The observations were carried out in J, H and K' bands using the new polarimeter POLICAN mounted on the 2.1m telescope of the Guillermo Haro Astrophysical Observatory, Sonora, Mexico. The most prominent result observed in the polarization maps is a large and well defined dusty envelope (35\arcsec\ diameter in H-band). The polarization position angles in the envelope are particularly well ordered and nearly parallel to the equator of the nebula (seen in J and H bands). The nebula presents a known bipolar outflow and the envelope completely wraps around it. Within the bipolar lobes, we find high polarization levels ranging from $60\%$ (J band) to $90\%$ (K' band) and the polarization angles trace a centrosymmetric pattern. We found the remnants of superwind shells at the edges of the bipolar lobes and the duration of this phase is around 600 yrs. The origin of polarization features in the nebula is most likely due to a combination of single and multiple scattering. Our results clearly demonstrate new structures that provide new hints on the evolution of Frosty Leo from its previous asymptotic giant branch phase., Comment: 5 figures, 9 pages, accepted in MNRAS

Introduction: Computer-aided design has become an important tool to develop novel pesticides based on natural lead compounds. Tenuazonic acid (TeA), a typical representative of the natural tetramic acid family, was patented as a potential bioherbicide. However, its herbicidal efficacy is still not up to the ideal standard of commercial products. Objectives: We aim to find new TeA’s derivatives with improved potency. Methods: Molecular docking was used to build ligand-acceptor interaction models, design and screen new derivatives. Phytotoxicity, oxygen evolution rate, chlorophyll fluorescence and herbicidal efficacy were determined to estimate biological activity of compounds. Results: With the aid of a constructed molecular model of natural lead molecule TeA binding to the QB site in Arabidopsis D1 protein, a series of derivatives differing in the alkyl side chain were designed and ranked according to free energies. All compounds are stabilized by hydrogen bonding interactions between their carbonyl oxygen O2 and D1-Gly256 residue; moreover, hydrogen bond distance is the most important factor for maintaining high binding affinity. Among 54 newly designed derivatives, D6, D13 and D27 with better affinities than TeA were screened out and synthesized to evaluate their photosynthetic inhibitory activity and herbicidal efficacy. Analysis of structure-activity relationship indicated that D6 and D13 with sec-pentyl and sec-hexyl side chains, respectively, were about twice more inhibitory of PSII activity and effective as herbicide than TeA with a sec-butyl side chain. Conclusion: D6 and D13 are promising compounds to develop TeA-derived novel PSII herbicides with superior performance.

POLICAN is a near-infrared imaging linear polarimeter developed for the Cananea Near-infrared Camera (CANICA) at the 2.1m telescope of the Guillermo Haro Astrophysical Observatory (OAGH) located in Cananea, Sonora, Mexico. POLICAN is mounted ahead of CANICA and consist of a rotating super-achromatic 1-2.7 micron half-wave plate (HWP) as the modulator and a fixed wire-grid polarizer as the analyzer. CANICA has a 1024 x 1024 HgCdTe detector with a plate scale of 0.32 arcsec/pixel and provides a field of view of 5.5 x 5.5 arcmin^2. The polarimetric observations are carried out by modulating the incoming light through different steps of half-wave plate angles 0, 22.5, 45, 67.5 deg, to establish linear Stokes parameters (I, Q, and U). Image reduction consists of dark subtraction, polarimetric flat fielding, and sky subtraction. The astrometry and photometric calibrations are performed using the publicly available data from the Two Micron All Sky Survey. Polarimetric calibration includes observations of globular clusters and polarization standards available in the literature. Analysis of multiple observations of globular clusters yielded an instrumental polarization of 0.51%. Uncertainties in polarization range from 0.1% to 10% from the brightest 7 mag to faintest 16 mag stars. The polarimetric accuracy achieved is better than 0.5% and the position angle errors less than 5 deg for stars brighter than 13 mag in H-band. POLICAN is mainly being used to study the scattered polarization and magnetic fields in and around star-forming regions of the interstellar medium., Comment: Accepted for PASP, 23 pages

Astrophysics - Astrophysics of Galaxies - Abstract
Sensitive, imaging observations of the 1.1 mm dust continuum emission from a 1 deg^2 area collected with the AzTEC bolometer camera on the Large Millimeter Telescope are presented. A catalog of 1545 compact sources is constructed based on a Wiener-optimization filter. These sources are linked to larger clump structures identified in the Bolocam Galactic Plane Survey. Hydrogen column densities are calculated for all sources and mass and mean volume densities are derived for the subset of sources for which kinematic distances can be assigned. The AzTEC sources are localized, high density peaks within the massive clumps of molecular clouds and comprise 5-15% of the clump mass. We examine the role of the gravitational instability in generating these fragments by comparing the mass of embedded AzTEC sources to the Jeans' mass of the parent BGPS object. For sources with distances less than 6 kpc the fragment masses are comparable to the clump Jeans' mass, despite having isothermal Mach numbers between 1.6 and 7.2. AzTEC sources linked to ultra-compact HII regions have mass surface densities greater than the critical value implied by the mass-size relationship of infrared dark clouds with high mass star formation while AzTEC sources associated with Class II methanol masers have mass surface densities greater than 0.7 g cm^{-2} that approaches the proposed threshold required to form massive stars., Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures, 6 tables. Colchicine was initiated within the first 48 hours of admission at a 1.5 mg loading dose, followed by 0.5 mg b.i.d. for one week and 0.5 mg per day for 28 days. The study endpoints were clinical status (7-points WHO ordinal scale) and inflammatory biomarkers (IL-6 and CRP).Results: A total of 103 patients (51± 12 years, 52% male) were randomly allocated to colchicine arm (n=52) and control arm (n=51). At day 28, all patients in the colchicine group were alive and discharged, whereas in the control group, two patients died in-hospital and one patient remained hospitalized. Clinical improvement in terms of changes on WHO scale at day 14 and 28 and time to 1-point clinical improvement did not differ between the two groups. Clinical deterioration (increase of at least 1-point in WHO scale) was observed in a higher proportion of cases in colchicine group (13.8%) vs control group (5.8%) (p=0.303); after adjustment by baseline risk factors and concomitant therapies, colchicine therapy was associated with a lower risk of clinical deterioration (p=0.030). Inflammatory biomarkers CRP and IL-6 concentrations course did not differ between the two arms. Conclusion: In hospitalized COVID-19 patients, colchicine treatment neither improved the clinical status, nor the inflammatory response, over the standard treatment. Nevertheless, a preventive effect for further clinical deterioration might be possible.Trial Registration: NCT04350320.Keywords: colchicine, COVID-19, inflammation

Objectives: Our objective was to characterize longitudinal patterns of viraemia and factors associated with viral suppression in people with HIV and low‐level viraemia (LLV) during antiretroviral therapy (ART). Methods: We included people with HIV in the EuResist Integrated Database with LLV following ART initiation after 2005. LLV was defined as two or more consecutive viral load (VL) measurements of 51–199 copies/mL 30–365 days apart after >12 months of ART. Viraemia patterns were analyzed over 24 months. Factors associated with viral suppression at 12 months after LLV episodes were identified using univariable and multivariable logistic regression. Results: Of 25 113 people with HIV, 2474 (9.9%) had LLV. Among 1387 participants with 24 months of follow‐up after LLV, 406 (29%) had persistent suppression, 669 (48%) had transient viraemic episodes, 29 (2%) had persistent LLV, and 283 (20%) had virological failure. Following LLV episodes, the proportion with detectable viraemia declined (p for trend <0.001 and 0.034, in the first and second year, respectively). At 12 months, 68% had undetectable VL, which was associated with suppression before LLV (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] 1.7; 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.2–2.4) and ART modification after LLV (aOR 1.6; 95% CI 1.0–2.4). The following factors were negatively associated with undetectable VL at 12 months: higher VL during LLV (aOR 0.57 per log10 copies/mL; 95% CI 0.37–0.89), injecting drug use (aOR 0.67; 95% CI 0.47–0.96), and regimens with protease inhibitors (aOR 0.65; 95% CI 0.49–0.87) or combined anchor drugs (aOR 0.52; 95% CI 0.32–0.85). Conclusion: Most people with LLV did not experience sustained viral suppression during 24‐month follow‐up, supporting the association between LLV and inferior treatment outcome. BACKGROUND: Bioherbicides are becoming more attractive as safe weed control tools towards sustainable agriculture. Natural products constitute an important source chemicals and chemical leads for discovery and development of novel pesticide target sites. Citrinin is a bioactive compound produced by fungi of the genera Penicillium and Aspergillus. However, its physiological‐biochemical mechanism as a phytotoxin remains unclear. RESULTS: Citrinin causes visible leaf lesions on Ageratina adenophora similar to those produced by the commercial herbicide bromoxynil. Phytotoxicity bioassay tests using 24 plant species confirmed that citrinin has a broad activity spectrum and therefore has potential as a bioherbicide. Based on chlorophyll fluorescence studies, citrinin mainly blocks PSII electron flow beyond plastoquinone QA at the acceptor side, resulting in the inactivation of PSII reaction centers. Furthermore, molecular modeling of citrinin docking to the A. adenophora D1 protein suggests that it binds to the plastoquinone QB site by a hydrogen bond between the O1 hydroxy oxygen atom of citrinin and the histidine 215 of the D1 protein, the same way as classical phenolic PSII herbicides do. Finally, 32 new citrinin derivatives were designed and sorted according to free energies on the basis of the molecular model of an interaction between the citrinin molecule and the D1 protein. Five of the modeled compounds had much higher ligand binding affinity within the D1 protein compared with lead compound citrinin. CONCLUSION: Citrinin is a novel natural PSII inhibitor that has the potential to be developed into a bioherbicide or utilized as a lead compound for discovery of new derivatives with high herbicidal potency. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry. 2-Amino-3-methylhexanoic acid (AMHA) was synthetized as a non-natural amino acid more than 70 years ago; however, its possible function as an inducer of plant resistance has not been reported. Plant resistance inducers, also known as plant elicitors, are becoming a novel and important development direction in crop protection and pest management. We found that free AMHA accumulated in the mycelia but not in fermentation broths of four fungal species, Magnaporthe oryzae and three Alternaria spp. We unequivocally confirmed that AMHA is a naturally occurring endogenous (2S, 3S)-α-amino acid, based on isolation, purification and structural analyses. Further experiments demonstrated that AMHA has potent activity-enhancing resistance against extreme temperature stresses in several plant species. It is also highly active against fungal, bacterial and viral diseases by inducing plant resistance. AMHA pretreatment strongly protected wheat against powdery mildew, Arabidopsis against Pseudomonas syringae DC3000 and tobacco against Tomato spotted wilt virus. AMHA exhibits a great potential to become a unique natural elicitor protecting plants against biotic and abiotic stresses.

The objective was to evaluate the effect of different treatments of chemical and biological fertilization on the yield of climbing and bush beans. According to the results obtained, in Antioquia, it is possible to replace the chemical fertilization by biological fertilization in the climbing bean Corpoica LAS-106 and the bush bean Citará. In Cundinamarca, similar situation was presented with “Cargamanto Rojo”. In Santander, it was found that the combination of mycorrhizae (AMF) and Rhizobium improves the performance of the bush bean ICA-Rovirense (2839.5 t ha-1) and ICA-Radical-J1J1 (1955.7 t ha-1), with respect to national average yield (1.2 t ha-1). The use of biofertilizers (mycorrhizal fungi and Rhizobium) improved the yields in the bean crop, with the materials used (climbing and bush) and in the localities studied. There is an additive effect in the applications of the biofertilizers evaluated, since it is a higher yield in the bean crop when these were applied individually combined.

In three Antioquia producing areas (El Retiro, El Peñol, and Amagá), three orchards of cv. Hass avocado were selected, in order to quantify the amount of nutrients removed by the fruit. A completely randomized design with 12 replications (trees) was used, for which 25 fruits/tree were collected, from which the fresh and dry weight of the epidermis, pulp, testa, and seed were obtained. In each fruit structure, the concentration of N, P, K, Ca, Mg, Fe, Cu, Mn, Zn, and B was determined and the removal of each was calculated. The tissue with the highest concentration of nutrients was the testa. The nutrient with the highest concentration in the four tissues was K followed by N. The total removal by the fresh fruit, in kg t-1, for K was 4; N, 3.3; S 0.56; Mg 0.51; Ca 0.31; 0.48 P and in g t-1 for Fe was 0.45; B 0.2; Zn 0.11; Mn 0.01 and Cu 0.03.

Primary CNS sarcomas are rare yet very aggressive tumors associated with high morbimortality rates. There is scarce literature about their radiologic characteristics. This retrospective study aimed to describe the clinical, pathologic, and imaging characteristics of these neoplasms. Twenty-four patients treated in a pediatric oncology referral center were recruited between 2008 and 2021. Their medical records were reviewed, and the pathology samples and images (CT and MR imaging) were analyzed. Most of the tumors were supratentorial, unifocal, solid lesions associated with postcontrast enhancement and diffusion restriction. The main manifestation was intracranial hemorrhage. A higher percentage of tumor resection and lower relapse rates were the main prognostic features found. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Forest degradation has increased in recent years due to biotic, abiotic, and anthropogenic factors. Parasitic plants are some of the main disturbance agents affecting forest resources. In temperate forests, the most frequent pest such as parasitic plants are from the genus Loranthaceae spp. Monitoring parasitic plants through traditional methods requires a large amount of time and human resources. Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) as a remote sensing tool have increased in popularity in different regions. UAV were used to assess the degree of infestation of Yellow Dwarf Mistletoe (YDM). In the present study, the presence of Yellow Dwarf Mistletoe (Arceuthobium globosum Hawksw. & Wiens) was identified using two information collection methods to estimate the level of infestation in a Pinus hartwegii Lindl. forest. First, the traditional method (Hawksworth) was used to estimate the degree of infestation per individual tree. Second, a remote sensing method using UAV was used to capture information at the crown level. Then, the Colorimetric Ranges at the Pixel Level (CRPL) method was used in conjunction with the decomposition of pixels with the RGB (Red-Green-Blue) model to define areas with the presence of infestation. The result of the methods was compared by calculating the pixels equivalence percentages identified as infested per level of infestation. The Hawksworth's method was used by determining three levels: level 0 (healthy) = 0-2% pixels; Level 1 (medium) = 3-5% pixels; and Level 2 (high) ≥ 5% pixels. The methods coincided in detecting a high level of infestation while were biased in detecting healthy trees and low levels of infestation. Nonetheless, the remote sensing method using UAV remains a viable alternative in the monitoring of mistletoe for its capacity to present an overall diagnosis of the level of infestation. The objective of this research was to study the relationship between the fatty acid content and the altitude of orchards and fruit maturity stage of avocados (Persea americana Mill. cv. Hass) at different locations in the department of Antioquia (Colombia). Orchards between 1,340 and 2,420 m a.s.l. were selected and the fatty acid profile and content of the fruits were analyzed. Oleic acid showed the highest percentage for all of the locations and its percentage decreased drastically at lower altitudes, meanwhile the percentage of palmitoleic and linoleic acids increased in these orchards. The oleic/palmitoleic, linoleic/palmitoleic, and oleic/linoleic indexes increased significantly at higher altitudes. Palmitoleic acid increased significantly with the maturity stage (dry matter content) of the avocados for all of the locations. Some fatty acids showed a high linear correlation with the fruit maturity stage, varying the type of acid or index with altitude. The fatty acid content is a variable to consider in future studies for a protected designation of origin (PDO), due to the close relationship observed with the geographical growing area and its importance to human health. More assessments must be taken over the course of years and harvests with more contrasting environments in order to obtain more robust information and feed the model.

Background High uptake of antiretroviral treatment (ART) is essential to reduce human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) transmission and related mortality; however, gaps in care exist. We aimed to construct the continuum of HIV care (CoC) in 2016 in 11 European Union (EU) countries, overall and by key population and sex. To estimate progress toward the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) 90-90-90 target, we compared 2016 to 2013 estimates for the same countries, representing 73% of the population in the region. Methods A CoC with the following 4 stages was constructed: number of people living with HIV (PLHIV); proportion of PLHIV diagnosed; proportion of those diagnosed who ever initiated ART; and proportion of those ever treated who achieved viral suppression at their last visit. Results We estimated that 87% of PLHIV were diagnosed; 92% of those diagnosed had ever initiated ART; and 91% of those ever on ART, or 73% of all PLHIV, were virally suppressed. Corresponding figures for men having sex with men were: 86%, 93%, 93%, 74%; for people who inject drugs: 94%, 88%, 85%, 70%; and for heterosexuals: 86%, 92%, 91%, 72%. The proportion suppressed of all PLHIV ranged from 59% to 86% across countries. Conclusions The EU is close to the 90-90-90 target and achieved the UNAIDS target of 73% of all PLHIV virally suppressed, significant progress since 2013 when 60% of all PLHIV were virally suppressed. Strengthening of testing programs and treatment support, along with prevention interventions, are needed to achieve HIV epidemic control., Standardized definitions were used to estimate a 4-stage continuum of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) care in 11 European Union (EU) countries in 2016. The EU is close to the 90-90-90 target, with the main challenge being the percentage of undiagnosed infections.

Bromacil was introduced at the beginning of the 1960s for PRE and early POST control of grasses and broadleaf weeds, particularly in citrus (Rutaceae spp.) orchards and pineapple [Ananas comosus (L.) Merr.] plantations as well as in noncultivated areas. Both the acidic form of bromacil and its lithium salt are highly soluble in water; the herbicide is moderately to highly persistent in the soil with a half-life from 60 d to 8 mo and is prone to percolate in the soil and reach groundwater. In Costa Rica, bromacil was registered for both citrus and pineapple, but in recent years its major use has been in pineapple. An average of 60,000 kg of active bromacil per year were imported before its banning in 2017. Pineapple is grown in more than 40,000 ha; the recommended rate of bromacil was 1.6 to 3.2 kg ha−1. In a survey conducted by the National University between 2001 and 2004, bromacil was the most frequently found pesticide, at levels between 0.5 and 20 µg L−1, in water springs and wells in the pineapple-growing area of the Caribbean side of Costa Rica. Further studies conducted more recently also documented the presence of bromacil in the ground and surface water in areas where pineapple is planted. The local standard for the quality of drinking water of 2015 established maximum acceptable values of 0.1 µg L−1 and 0.5 µg L−1 for a single pesticide and for the sum of all pesticides present, respectively, but it was amended for bromacil to comply with requirements determined by the Constitutional Court to “non-detectable by method.” This paper provides an account of the scientific and administrative considerations for the banning of bromacil that occurred on May 24, 2017.

Background Tea, one of the most important commercial crops on earth, is strongly affected by weeds on productivity and quality. Bioherbicides are shedding new light on weed control in tea gardens in an economical and safe manner. Results A pathogenic strain SYNJC-2-2 was isolated from diseased leaves of a noxious weed, goosegrass (Eleusine indica) from a tea garden in Zhejiang Province, China. It was identified as the fungal species Bipolaris bicolor based on the morphological characteristics and phylogenetic analysis. The potential of the B. bicolor strain SYNJC-2-2 as a bioherbicide was assessed by determining its efficacy to control weeds and selectivity to crops, its infection process and the influence of environmental conditions on conidial production and germination. The ED90 (effective dose of conidia resulting in 90 disease index) of SYNJC-2-2 on goosegrass was 2 × 104 conidia mL-1 . Additionally, three Poaceae weeds, Setaria viridis, Microstegium vimineum and Pennisetum alopecuroides, were also extremely susceptible to SYNJC-2-2. SYNJC-2-2 was safe to 14 out of 17 crop species in 9 families, especially tea plants. Conidial germination, hyphal growth and appressorial formation occurred within 3 to 6 h on goosegrass leaves. Hyphae invaded leaf tissues mainly through epidermal cell junctions and cracks, causing cell death and necrotic lesions within 2 days on inoculated leaves and killing goosegrass plants within 7 days. Furthermore, SYNJC-2-2 has a strong adaptability to environmental variables and high conidial production capacity on goosegrass juice agar media. Conclusion B. bicolor strain SYNJC-2-2 has the potential to be developed as a bioherbicide for controlling goosegrass, especially in tea gardens. This article is protected by copyright.
