15. Quantum turbulence by vortex stirring in a spinor Bose-Einstein condensate

Abstract

We introduce a novel mechanism to develop a turbulent flow in a spinor Bose-Einstein condensate, consisting in the stirring of a single line vortex by means of an external magnetic field. We find that density and velocity fluctuations have white-noise power spectra at large frequencies and that Kolmogorov 5/3 law is obeyed in the turbulent region. As the stirring is turned off, the flow decays to an agitated non-equilibrium state that shows an energy bottleneck crossover at small length scales. We demonstrate our findings by numerically solving two-state spinor coupled 3D Gross-Pitaevskii equations. Abstract

Altres ajuts: This study has been funded by Josep Carreras Leukaemia Foundation (Grant 11R/2016 and 03R/2019). Allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HCT) is an effective therapy for the treatment of high-risk haematological malignant disorders and other life-threatening haematological and genetic diseases. Acute graft-versus-host disease (aGvHD) remains the most frequent cause of non-relapse mortality following allo-HCT and limits its extensive clinical application. Current pharmacologic agents used for prophylaxis and treatment of aGvHD are not uniformly successful and have serious secondary side effects. Therefore, more effective and safe prophylaxis and therapy for aGvHD are an unmet clinical need. Defibrotide is a multi-target drug successfully employed for prophylaxis and treatment of veno-occlusive disease/sinusoidal obstruction syndrome. Recent preliminary clinical data have suggested some efficacy of defibrotide in the prevention of aGvHD after allo-HCT. Using a fully MHC-mismatched murine model of allo-HCT, we report here that defibrotide, either in prophylaxis or treatment, is effective in preventing T cell and neutrophil infiltration and aGvHD-associated tissue injury, thus reducing aGvHD incidence and severity, with significantly improved survival after allo-HCT. Moreover, we performed in vitro mechanistic studies using human cells revealing that defibrotide inhibits leucocyte-endothelial interactions by down-regulating expression of key endothelial adhesion molecules involved in leucocyte trafficking. Together, these findings provide evidence that defibrotide may represent an effective and safe clinical alternative for both prophylaxis and treatment of aGvHD after allo-HCT, paving the way for new therapeutic approaches.

46. Alternative regularizations for Outer-Approximation algorithms for convex MINLP

Abstract

In this work, we extend the regularization framework from Kronqvist et al. (Math Program 180(1):285–310, 2020) by incorporating several new regularization functions and develop a regularized single-tree search method for solving convex mixed-integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) problems. We propose a set of regularization functions based on distance metrics and Lagrangean approximations, used in the projection problem for finding new integer combinations to be used within the Outer-Approximation (OA) method. The new approach, called Regularized Outer-Approximation (ROA), has been implemented as part of the open-source Mixed-integer nonlinear decomposition toolbox for Pyomo—MindtPy. We compare the OA method with seven regularization function alternatives for ROA. Moreover, we extend the LP/NLP Branch and Bound method proposed by Quesada and Grossmann (Comput Chem Eng 16(10–11):937–947, 1992) to include regularization in an algorithm denoted RLP/NLP. We provide convergence guarantees for both ROA and RLP/NLP. Finally, we perform an extensive computational experiment considering all convex MINLP problems in the benchmark library MINLPLib.
