Often, when we consider the time evolution of a system, we resort to approximation: Instead of calculating the exact orbit, we divide the time interval in question into uniform segments. Chernoff's results in this direction provide us with a general approximation scheme. There are situations when we need to break the interval into uneven pieces. In this paper, we explore alternative conditions to the one found by Smolyanov et. al such that Chernoff's original result can be extended to unevenly distributed time intervals. We investigate the exact master equation of Hu, Paz, and Zhang for a quantum harmonic oscillator at zero temperature with a Lorentz-Drude type Ohmic spectral density. This master equation plays an important role in the study of quantum Brownian motion and in various applications. We provide a countable set of conditions based on elementary symmetric polynomials that are necessary and sufficient for a trace class integral operator to be positive semidefinite, which is an important cornerstone for quantum theory in phase-space representation. We also present a new, efficiently computable algorithm based on Newton's identities. Quantitative characterization of different entanglement detection criteria for bipartite systems is presented. We review the implication sequence of these criteria and then numerically estimate volume ratios between criteria non-violating quantum states and all quantum states. The numerical approach is based on the hit-and-run algorithm, which is applied to the convex set of all quantum states embedded into a Euclidean vector space of the Hilbert-Schmidt inner product. We demonstrate that reduction, majorization, and the R\'enyi-entropy-based criteria are very ineffective compared to the positive partial transpose. In the case of the R\'enyi-entropy-based criterion, we show that the ratio of detectable entanglement increases with the order of the R\'enyi entropy., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures

Euclidean volume ratios between quantum states with positive partial transpose and all quantum states in bipartite systems are investigated. These ratios allow a quantitative exploration of the typicality of entanglement and of its detectability by Bell inequalities. For this purpose a new numerical approach is developed. It is based on the Peres-Horodecki criterion, on a characterization of the convex set of quantum states by inequalities resulting from Newton identities and from Descartes' rule of signs, and on a numerical approach involving the multiphase Monte Carlo method and the hit-and-run algorithm. This approach confirms not only recent analytical and numerical results on two-qubit, qubit--qutrit, and qubit--four-level qudit states but also allows for a numerically reliable numerical treatment of so far unexplored qutrit--qutrit states. Based on this numerical approach with the help of the Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt inequality and the Collins-Gisin inequality the degree of detectability of entanglement is investigated for two-qubit quantum states. It is investigated quantitatively to which extent a combined test of both Bell inequalities can increase the detectability of entanglement beyond what is achievable by each of these inequalities separately., Comment: 29 pages, 4 figures

We investigate a case of the Hu-Paz-Zhang master equation of the Caldeira-Leggett model without Lindblad form obtained in the weak-coupling limit up to the second-order perturbation. In our study, we use Gaussian initial states to be able to employ a sufficient and necessary condition, which can expose positivity violations of the density operator during the time evolution. We demonstrate that the evolution of the non-Markovian master equation has problems when the stationary solution is not a positive operator, i.e., does not have physical interpretation. We also show that solutions always remain physical for small-times of evolution. Moreover, we identify a strong anomalous behavior, when the trace of the solution is diverging. We also provide results for the corresponding Markovian master equation and show that positivity violations occur for various types of initial conditions even when the stationary solution is a positive operator. Based on our numerical results, we conclude that this non-Markovian master equation is superior to the corresponding Markovian one., Comment: 14 pages, 19 figures

Iterates of quantum operations and their convergence are investigated in the context of mean ergodic theory. We discuss in detail the convergence of the iterates and show that the uniform ergodic theorem plays an essential role. Our results will follow from some general theorems concerning completely positive maps, mean ergodic operators, and operator algebras on Hilbert spaces. An extension of Chernoff's product formula for one-parameter functions taking values in the space of bounded linear operators on a Banach space is given. Essentially, the $n$-th one-parameter function in the product formula is mapped by the $n$-th iterate of a contraction acting on the space of the one-parameter functions. The motivation to study this specific product formula lies in the growing field of dynamical control of quantum systems, involving the procedure of dynamical decoupling and also the Quantum Zeno effect., Comment: 10 pages

The Caldeira-Leggett master equation as an example of Markovian master equation without Lindblad form is investigated for mathematical consistency. We explore situations both analytically and numerically where the positivity violations of the density operator occur. We reinforce some known knowledge about this problem but also find new surprising cases. Our analytical results are based on the full solution of the Caldeira-Leggett master equation obtained via the method of characteristics. The preservation of positivity is mainly investigated with the help of the density operator's purity and we give also some numerical results about the violation of the Robertson-Schr\"odinger uncertainty relation., Comment: 13 pages, 12 figures

Quantum Brownian motion of a harmonic oscillator in the Markovian approximation is described by the respective Caldeira-Leggett master equation. This master equation can be brought into Lindblad form by adding a position diffusion term to it. The coefficient of this term is either customarily taken to be the lower bound dictated by the Dekker inequality or determined by more detailed derivations on the linearly damped quantum harmonic oscillator. We propose a hybrid quantum repeater based on ancillary coherent field states and material qubits coupled to optical cavities. For this purpose, resonant qubit-field interactions and postselective field measurements are determined which are capable of realizing all necessary two-qubit operations for the actuation of the quantum repeater. We explore both theoretical and experimental possibilities of generating near-maximally-entangled qubit pairs ($F>0.999$) over long distances. It is shown that our scheme displays moderately low repeater rates, between $5 \times 10^{-4}$ and $23$ pairs per second, over distances up to $900$ km, and it relies completely on current technology of cavity quantum electrodynamics., Comment: 18 pages, 13 figures, corrected according to published Erratum

Recently, Di\'osi et al. (Int. J. Quant. Inf. 4, 99 (2006)) introduced a simple, yet very interesting model for reservoirs, in order to study the relationship between thermodynamic entropy production of a system and the corresponding von Neumann entropy (or informatic entropy, as it was called by the authors). They came up with a conjecture about the asymptotic behaviour of the state introduced in the model. The conjecture was proven later by Csisz\'ar et al. (J. Math. Phys. 48, 092102 (2007)). Equidistant and non-equidistant single pulse "bang-bang" dynamical controls are investigated in the context of mean ergodic theorems. We show the requirements in which the limit of infinite pulse control for both the equidistant and the non-equidistant dynamical control converges to the same unitary evolution. It is demonstrated that the generator of this evolution can be obtained by projecting the generator of the free evolution onto the commutant of the unitary operator representing the pulse. We propose a scheme for the remote preparation of entangled matter qubits in free space. For this purpose, a setup of two opposing parabolic mirrors is considered, each one with a single ion trapped at its focus. To get the required entanglement in this extreme multimode scenario, we take advantage of the spontaneous decay, which is usually considered as an apparent nuisance. Using semiclassical methods, we derive an efficient photon-path representation to deal with this problem. We also present a thorough examination of the experimental feasibility of the scheme. The vulnerabilities arising in realistic implementations reduce the success probability, but leave the fidelity of the generated state unaltered. Dynamical decoupling is an important tool to counter decoherence and dissipation effects in quantum systems originating from environmental interactions. It has been used successfully in many experiments; however, there is still a gap between fidelity improvements achieved in practice compared to theoretical predictions. We propose a model for imperfect dynamical decoupling based on a stochastic Ito differential equation which could explain the observed gap. We discuss the impact of our model on the time evolution of various quantum systems in finite- and infinite-dimensional Hilbert spaces. Protocols for probabilistic entanglement-assisted quantum teleportation and for entanglement swapping of material qubits are presented. They are based on a protocol for postselective Bell-state projection which is capable of projecting two material qubits onto a Bell state with the help of ancillary coherent multiphoton states and postselection by balanced homodyne photodetection. Provided this photonic postselection is successful we explore the theoretical possibilities of realizing unit fidelity quantum teleportation and entanglement swapping with $25\%$ success probability. This photon-assisted Bell projection is generated by coupling almost resonantly the two material qubits to single modes of the radiation field in two separate cavities in a Ramsey-type interaction sequence and by measuring the emerged field states in a balanced homodyne detection scenario. As these quantum protocols require basic tools of quantum state engineering of coherent multiphoton states and balanced homodyne photodetection they may offer interesting perspectives in particular for current quantum optical applications in quantum information processing., Comment: 16 pages, 9 figures

Quantum communication over long distances relies on the ability to create entanglement between two remote quantum nodes. Recent proposals aiming at experimental realization propose a hybrid quantum repeater setup where two distant material qubits are entangled by light-matter interaction. Motivated by these developments, we investigate possible decoherence effects originating from the centre- of-mass motion of the spatially well separated trapped qubits. Within the Lamb-Dicke regime we use photon exchange involving coherent states of the radiation field to entangle the two material qubits. Optimal generalized photonic field measurements are used to achieve entangled qubit pairs with high fidelities and high success probabilities. We demonstrate that the quality of the achievable two-qubit entanglement crucially depends on the trap frequencies involved. Furthermore, dynamical decoupling schemes are proposed which are capable of suppressing centre-of-mass-motion-induced decoherence effects significantly and which involve only local operations acting on the spatially well-separated material qubits., Comment: 28 pages, 14 figures

We investigate the quantum electrodynamics of a single two-level atom located at the focus of a parabolic cavity. We first work out the modifications of the spontaneous emission induced by the presence of this boundary in the optical regime, where the dipole and the rotating-wave approximations apply. Furthermore, the single-photon state that leaves the cavity asymptotically is determined. The corresponding time-reversed single-photon quantum state is capable of exciting the atom in this extreme multimode scenario with near-unit probability. Using semiclassical methods, we derive a photon-path representation for the relevant transition amplitudes and show that it constitutes a satisfactory approximation for a wide range of wavelengths., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures

We explore possibilities of entangling two distant material qubits with the help of an optical radiation field in the regime of strong quantum electrodynamical coupling with almost resonant interaction. For this purpose the optimum generalized field measurements are determined which are capable of preparing a two-qubit Bell state by postselection with minimum error. It is demonstrated that in the strong-coupling regime some of the recently found limitations of the non-resonant weak-coupling regime can be circumvented successfully due to characteristic quantum electrodynamical quantum interference effects. In particular, in the absence of photon loss it is possible to postselect two-qubit Bell states with fidelities close to unity by a proper choice of the relevant interaction time. Even in the presence of photon loss this strong-coupling regime offers interesting perspectives for creating spatially well-separated Bell pairs with high fidelities, high success probabilities, and high repetition rates which are relevant for future realizations of quantum repeaters., Comment: 14 pages, 12 figures

We consider the dynamics of charge carriers in single-layer graphene that are subject to random temporal fluctuations of their mass gap. The optical conductivity is calculated by incorporating the quantum-stochastic time evolution into the standard linear-response (Kubo) theory. We find that, for an intermediate range of frequencies below the average gap size, electron transport is enhanced by fluctuations. At the same time, in the limit of high as well as low frequencies, the conductivity is suppressed as the variance of gap fluctuations increases. In particular, the dc conductivity is always suppressed by a random temporal mass with nonvanishing mean value and vanishes in the zero-temperature limit. We study the dynamics of a spin-dependent quantum dot system, where an unsharp and a sharp detection scenario is introduced. The back-action of the unsharp detection related to the magnetization, proposed in terms of the continuous quantum measurement theory, is observed via the von Neumann measurement (sharp detection) of the electric charge current. The behavior of the average electron charge current is studied as a function of the unsharp detection strength \gamma, and features of measurement back-action are discussed. The achieved equations reproduce the quantum Zeno effect. Considering magnetic leads, we demonstrate that the measurement process may freeze the system in its initial state. We show that the continuous observation may enhance the transition between spin states, in contradiction with rapidly repeated projective observations, when it slows down. We have performed a theoretical study of electronic transport in single and bilayer graphene based on the standard linear-response (Kubo) formalism and continuum-model descriptions of the graphene band structure. We are focusing especially on the interband contribution to the optical conductivity. Analytical results are obtained for a variety of situations, which allow clear identification of features in the conductivity that are associated with relevant electronic energy scales. We have calculated the optical conductivity of a disorder-free single graphene sheet in the presence of spin-orbit coupling, using the Kubo formalism. Both intrinsic and structural-inversion-asymmetry induced types of spin splitting are considered within a low-energy continuum theory. Analytical results are obtained that allow us to identify distinct features arising from spin-orbit couplings.
