Abstract

This paper presents a new approach to model a transmission tower for lightning performance studies. It consists of representing each part of the tower by equivalent vertical and/or horizontal transmission lines as required. While horizontal line parameters are obtained from standard line formulas, specific expressions are derived for the parameters of vertical lines. Moreover, mutual coupling between any two parallel vertical transmission lines is taken into account. Transient waveforms obtained using the proposed method are compared with experimental data obtained using a reduced-scale model and field experiments. The agreement between simulated results and experimental measurements is satisfactory. Abstract

Lightning protection of modern wind turbines presents a number of new challenges due to the geometrical, electrical and mechanical particularities of the turbines. The risk assessment requires the estimation of the number of expected strikes. In the case of modern turbines, most of the expected lightning flashes will be upward. In addition, due to the rotation of the blades, modern wind turbines may trigger their own lightning. Moreover, since wind turbines are becoming tall structures, lightning currents that are injected by return strokes into the turbines may be affected by the structure itself. The presence of carbon reinforced plastics in the blades introduces a new set of problems. The validation of lightning protection systems for wind-turbine blades is therefore an important issue. This paper presents some open questions related to lightning protection of large wind turbines. The paper also presents two full-scale blade impulse current tests that allow the evaluatation of current distributions and potential differences for the first and second return stroke currents defined in the corresponding IEC standards.

15. Reduction and the self

Abstract

Galen Strawson's keynote paper (1997) offers us one way of modelling the self, one that starts from the phenomenology of the sense of self and derives from that metaphysical conclusions about the nature of the self. Strawson is surely correct to hold that phenomenological considerations cannot be ignored in thinking about the metaphysics of the self. I am not as convinced as he is, however, that phenomenology is the royal road to metaphysics. What I want to sketch out in this short paper is another approach to the metaphysics of the self, one that is driven by reductivist concerns. As far as I can see it is an open question whether there are any global points of disagreement between us (although there are certainly some local ones).
