Abstract

LiteBIRD is a JAXA-led Strategic Large-Class mission designed to search for the existence of the primordial gravitational waves produced during the inflationary phase of the Universe, through the measurements of their imprint onto the polarization of the cosmic microwave background (CMB). These measurements, requiring unprecedented sensitivity, will be performed over the full sky, at large angular scales, and over 15 frequency bands from 34GHz to 448GHz. The LiteBIRD instruments consist of three telescopes, namely the Low-, Medium- and High-Frequency Telescope (respectively LFT, MFT and HFT). We present in this paper an overview of the design of the Medium-Frequency Telescope (89-224GHz) and the High-Frequency Telescope (166-448GHz), the so-called MHFT, under European responsibility, which are two cryogenic refractive telescopes cooled down to 5K. They include a continuous rotating half-wave plate as the first optical element, two high-density polyethylene (HDPE) lenses and more than three thousand transition-edge sensor (TES) detectors cooled to 100mK. Abstract

LiteBIRD, the Lite (Light) satellite for the study of B-mode polarization and Inflation from cosmic background Radiation Detection, is a space mission for primordial cosmology and fundamental physics. JAXA selected LiteBIRD in May 2019 as a strategic large-class (L-class) mission, with its expected launch in the late 2020s using JAXA's H3 rocket. LiteBIRD plans to map the cosmic microwave background (CMB) polarization over the full sky with unprecedented precision. Its main scientific objective is to carry out a definitive search for the signal from cosmic inflation, either making a discovery or ruling out well-motivated inflationary models. The measurements of LiteBIRD will also provide us with an insight into the quantum nature of gravity and other new physics beyond the standard models of particle physics and cosmology. To this end, LiteBIRD will perform full-sky surveys for three years at the Sun-Earth Lagrangian point L2 for 15 frequency bands between 34 and 448 GHz with three telescopes, to achieve a total sensitivity of 2.16 micro K-arcmin with a typical angular resolution of 0.5 deg. at 100GHz. Abstract

LiteBIRD has been selected as JAXA's strategic large mission in the 2020s, to observe the cosmic microwave background (CMB) $B$-mode polarization over the full sky at large angular scales. The challenges of LiteBIRD are the wide field-of-view (FoV) and broadband capabilities of millimeter-wave polarization measurements, which are derived from the system requirements. The possible paths of stray light increase with a wider FoV and the far sidelobe knowledge of $-56$ dB is a challenging optical requirement. A crossed-Dragone configuration was chosen for the low frequency telescope (LFT : 34--161 GHz), one of LiteBIRD's onboard telescopes. It has a wide field-of-view ($18^\circ \times 9^\circ$) with an aperture of 400 mm in diameter, corresponding to an angular resolution of about 30 arcminutes around 100 GHz. The focal ratio f/3.0 and the crossing angle of the optical axes of 90$^\circ$ are chosen after an extensive study of the stray light. The primary and secondary reflectors have rectangular shapes with serrations to reduce the diffraction pattern from the edges of the mirrors. The reflectors and structure are made of aluminum to proportionally contract from warm down to the operating temperature at $5\,$K. A 1/4 scaled model of the LFT has been developed to validate the wide field-of-view design and to demonstrate the reduced far sidelobes. A polarization modulation unit (PMU), realized with a half-wave plate (HWP) is placed in front of the aperture stop, the entrance pupil of this system. A large focal plane with approximately 1000 AlMn TES detectors and frequency multiplexing SQUID amplifiers is cooled to 100 mK. The lens and sinuous antennas have broadband capability. Abstract

Encapsulating Fe3C in carbon layers has emerged as an innovative strategy for protecting Fe3C while preserving its high oxygen reduction activity. However, fundamental questions persist regarding the active sites of encapsulated Fe3C due to the restricted accessibility of oxygen molecules to the metal sites. Herein, the intrinsic electron transfer mechanisms of Fe3C nanoparticles encapsulated in N-doped carbon materials are unveiled for oxygen reduction electrocatalysis. The precision-structured C1N1 material is used to synthesize N-doped carbons with encapsulated Fe3C, significantly enhancing catalytic activity (EONSET = 0.98 V) and achieving near-100% operational stability. In anion-exchange membrane fuel cells, an excellent peak power density of 830 mW cm−2 is reached at 60 °C. The experimental and computational results revealed that the presence of Fe3C cores dynamically triggers electron transfer to the outermost carbon layer. This phenomenon amplifies the oxygen reduction reaction performance at N sites, contributing significantly to the observed catalytic enhancement.

Abstract

In this study, efficient electrodes for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) based on low-cost and metal-free carbon catalysts are presented. Phytic acid, a biosourced molecule containing carbon (C) and phosphorus (P), was found to be an excellent precursor for producing carbon materials with high P content, depending on the carbonization temperature, from 27.9 wt% at 700 °C to 7.3 wt% at 1000 °C. A green and easy route to produce P-doped carbon materials by heat treatment of this biosourced precursor without the need for additional reagents is thus proposed. We show that the conversion of P-O-type groups into P-C-type species is of paramount importance for improving the catalytic activity in HER of P-doped carbon materials. P-C-type groups appear to be the key factor in the electrocatalytic activity, reaching an onset potential of - 0.27 V. This study sheds light on the origin of the catalytic activity of P-doped carbons, in which P is expected to modify the homogenous distribution of the electron density of undoped carbons and increase their catalytic performance.

Abstract

The sluggish kinetics of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is one of the most limiting factors for the development of many “green” electrochemical devices. Expensive ruthenium and iridium oxide electrodes are often used as advanced electrocatalysts to overcome this limitation. However, these materials are rare in nature, which further limit the implementation of this kind of electrochemical device on a global scale. Compounds based on transition metals and boron have proven to be promising alternatives to commercial electrocatalysts due to their high catalytic properties and robust stability under working conditions. However, such compounds are often obtained through expensive synthetic routes that often involve the use of supports, which increases the cost of electrocatalysts. Here, we present an easy and support-free synthesis of bimetallic borates based on the introduction of transition metals into cobalt borates. Depending on the metal, different morphologies, structural order, surface chemistry, and, most importantly, electrocatalytic properties toward the OER have been obtained. Among all the transition metals, nickel is the one that most improves the catalytic activity of cobalt borate for the OER in an alkaline electrolyte. An overpotential of 230 mV, similar to that of commercial and state-of-the-art electrocatalysts, was obtained by using a support-free synthesis route for the preparation of this catalyst.

Abstract

Single atoms and nanoclusters of Fe, Ni, Co, Cu, and Mn are systematically designed and embedded in a well-defined C1N1-type material that has internal cavities of ≈0.6 nm based on four N atoms. These N atoms serve as perfect anchoring points for the nucleation of small nanoclusters of different metal natures through the creation of metal-nitrogen (TM-N4) bonds. After pyrolysis at 800 °C, TM@CNx-type structures are obtained, where TM is the transition metal and x < 1. Fe@CNx and Co@CNx are the most promising for oxygen reduction reaction and hydrogen evolution reaction, respectively, with a Pt-like performance, and Ni@CNx is the most active for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) with an EOER of 1.59 V versus RHE, far outperforming the commercial IrO2 (EOER = 1.72 V). This systematic and benchmarking study can serve as a basis for the future design of advanced multi-functional electrocatalysts by modulating and combining the metallic nature of nanoclusters and single atoms.

Abstract

The sluggish kinetics and high overpotential of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in fuel cells and metal–air batteries are currently resolved through the use of expensive and scarce platinum-based electrocatalysts. Here, a green and straightforward synthesis method for preparing metal-free phosphorus-doped carbon (PDC) materials via carbonization of phytic acid at temperatures ranging from 700 to 1000 °C is reported. This study provides valuable insights into the effect of carbonization temperature on the surface chemistry and catalytic performance of PDCs. The PDC electrocatalysts exhibit ORR electrocatalytic activity equivalent to that of the state-of-the-art P-doped carbons and show a correlation between the content of C–P species and the electrocatalytic activity for the ORR. The study suggests that C–P-type species are responsible for the improved ORR. These findings not only demonstrate a practical and low-cost approach for preparing highly efficient metal-free electrocatalysts for the ORR, but also highlight their potential for the development of sustainable energy technologies.

Recent developments in radiation techniques allow simultaneous integrated boost (SIB) concepts while sparing organs at risk. Data on conventional versus dose-escalated radiation approaches in multiple BMs from malignant melanoma are warranted.Methods: In this prospective, single-center, randomized two-armed study (trial ID: DRKS00005127), patients with multiple BMs from malignant melanoma were treated with either conventional whole-brain radiotherapy (WBRT) applying 30 Gy in 10 fractions (standard arm) or helical tomotherapy applying 30 Gy to the whole brain with an integrated boost to metastases of 50 Gy in 10 fractions and sparing of the hippocampus (HA-WBRT, experimental arm). The primary endpoint was treatment-related toxicity, while secondary endpoints were imaging response, intracerebral progression-free survival (PFS), overall survival (OS) and quality of life.Results: The study was stopped early due to slow patient recruitment. A total number of 7 patients were enrolled (standard arm n=3, experimental arm n=4), and were followed-up for a median time of 5 months between August 2013 and July 2017. All patients were treated according to protocol. The median OS, intracerebral PFS and follow-up time were 5 months, 2 months and 5 months, respectively. The local control in every individual BM was significantly longer in the experimental versus the standard arm. No patient developed radiation-related high-grade toxicities.Conclusion: HA-WBRT with SIB results in improved local control in the individual melanoma BMs without radiation-associated high-grade toxicities.
