Dentro de las tecnologías que hoy en día tienen implicaciones importantes en ámbitos como la educación, la salud y el sector productivo, se destaca el videostreaming. Esto teniendo en cuenta las ventajas que esta tecnología ofrece para el acceso a contenidos multimedia de manera remota, en vivo o fuera de línea. El objetivo de éste artículo es proponer un entorno de pruebas para el soporte del servicio de videostreaming haciendo uso de herramientas libres. Así mismo, este trabajo propone como parte de éste entorno, una herramienta para la medición de estrés llamada Hermes, la cual permite obtener los tiempos de respuesta producto de las múltiples conexiones RTSP a servidores de streaming. La metodología usada para el desarrollo de este trabajo está dividida en 4 fases: análisis de tecnologías y herramientas, configuración del entorno de videostreaming, diseño e implementación de Hermes y pruebas. Está metodología permitió la construcción del entorno de pruebas y su evaluación, a través de la herramienta de medición de estrés Hermes. Finalmente, mediante este trabajo se demuestra como el entorno de pruebas presentado, se convierte en un punto de referencia para diversos entornos de aplicación que requieran el montaje e implementación del servicio de videostreaming. Amino acids have a crucial role in the field of asymmetric organocatalysis for the production of chiral compounds with high added value and specific biological activity. In particular, proline offers high activity and stereoselectivity for catalyzing aldol reactions in organic solvents. However, proline-based catalysts often lack water-solubility, accessibility, catalytic performance, or recovery in aqueous media. This work reports the design of proline-functionalized poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) nanoparticles with a magnetic core that offer high availability of chiral units in water and high recyclability. A proline-based copolymerizable surfactant is designed and integrated onto the surface of PMMA nanoparticles through a miniemulsion polymerization process without using additional surfactants. The miniemulsion technique allows the incorporation of magnetite to the system to create a magnetically separable catalyst. The chiral nanocatalyst presents a high diastereoselective catalytic activity for the intermolecular aldol reaction between p-nitrobenzaldehyde and cyclohexanone in water., (© 2024 The Author(s). Background: People with acquired brain injury (ABI) often have Social Cognition (SC) deficits. Impairment of SC causes the individual to have difficulties in daily functioning and can lead to social isolation. Research aimed at rehabilitation of SC in individuals with ABI is scarce and almost always addresses only one component of this ability., Objective: This pilot study aimed to assess the effectiveness of the new "SocialMind" program in improving all core components of SC in people with ABI., Method: The study included 31 participants with ABI, divided into experimental and control groups. The study spanned 44 weeks, involving an initial meeting, evaluation, training, and final assessment phases. The SocialMind program, structured into four modules, each with a duration of 30 h, targeted each SC component through tailored exercises. The program addressed emotion recognition, social awareness, ToM, and empathy., Results: The SocialMind group demonstrated significant improvements in emotion recognition ( p = 0.017), social knowledge ( p < 0.001), and empathy ( p = 0.001) compared to the control group. Context: Urbanization is rapidly increasing worldwide, with about 60% of the global population currently residing in cities and expected to reach 68% by 2050. In Latin America's tropical Andes region, managing these changes poses challenges, including biodiversity loss and vulnerability to climate change., Objectives: This study assesses urban growth and agricultural intensification impacts on the ecological functionality of metropolitan green infrastructures and their capacity to provide ecosystem services using a landscape sustainability and sociometabolic approach. Specifically, it aims to identify landscape configurations promoting socio-ecological sustainability amidst rapid urbanization., Methods: A landscape-metabolic model (IDC) was applied to evaluate the interactions between land use changes and ecosystem functions in the metropolitan region of Cali., Results: Agricultural intensification and industrialization, coupled with uncontrolled urban growth, have significantly transformed the landscape, posing threats to its sustainability. The prevailing biocultural landscapes hold a substantial potential to provide essential ecosystem services to the metropolis. The IDC offers an approach that utilizes a land cover map and agricultural production/metabolism data to calculate an indicator closely related to ecosystem services and multifunctionality., Conclusions: The IDC model stands out for efficiently capturing landscape dynamics, providing insights into landscape configuration and social metabolism without extensive resource requirements. This research highlights the importance of adopting a landscape-metabolic and green infrastructure framework to guide territorial policies in the tropical Andes and similar regions. Nanoemulsions are kinetically stabilized emulsions with droplet sizes in the nanometer scale. These nanodroplets are able to confine spaces in which reactions of polymerization or precipitation can take place, leading to the formation of particles and capsules that can act as nanocarriers for biomedical applications. This review discusses the different possibilities of using nanoemulsions for preparing biomedical nanocarriers. According to the chemical nature, nanocarriers prepared in nanoemulsions are classified in polymeric, inorganic, or hybrid. The main synthetic strategies for each type are revised, including miniemulsion polymerization, nanoemulsion-solvent evaporation, spontaneous emulsification, sol-gel processes, and combination of different techniques to form multicomponent materials., (Copyright © 2021 The Authors. The heterogeneous catalysis of the hydration of nitriles to amides is a process of great industrial relevance in which cerium(IV) oxide (also referred to as ceria) has shown an outstanding catalytic performance. The use of non-supported ceria nanoparticles is related to difficulties in the purification of the product and the recovery and recyclability of the catalyst. Therefore, in this work, ceria nanoparticles are supported on a polymer matrix either by synthesizing polymer particles by so-called Pickering miniemulsions while using ceria nanoparticles as emulsion stabilizers or, as a comparison, by in-situ crystallization on preformed polymer particles. The former strategy presents significant advantages over the latter in terms of time and consumption of resources, and it facilitates an easier scale-up of the process. In both strategies, the incorporation of a magnetoresponsive core within the polymer matrix allows the recovery and the recycling of the catalyst by simple application of a magnetic field and offers an enhancement of the catalytic efficiency.

A heterophase method to prepare hollow and/or porous crystalline nanoparticles of metal oxides at room temperature is presented, taking cerium(IV) oxide and γ-iron(III) oxide (i.e., maghemite) as representative cases. The crystallization begins at the oil-water interface in aqueous nanodroplets of the precursor in inverse (water-in-oil) miniemulsion systems, and it may continue toward the inner part of the droplets. A poly(styrene-b-acrylic acid) block copolymer is used as a structuring agent because the ability of the carboxylic groups to bind metal ions improves the inorganic shell formation. A precipitating base is added from the continuous phase, generating hydroxide species at the interface that begin the crystallization. We analyze the effects of the synthetic parameters in terms of colloidal stability and morphology of the resulting materials. In the case of maghemite samples, the prepared dispersions of hollow particles present a distinct magnetofluidic behavior.

Objective: To describe the food intake and food sources of macronutrients in diets of older Hispanic adults in the Northeastern United States and to explore relationships between acculturation, years in the United States, and macronutrient intake., Design: Cross-sectional study using a representative sample of older Hispanic adults and a comparison group of non-Hispanic whites., Subjects/setting: Hispanic (n = 711) and non-Hispanic white (n = 226) persons, aged 60 years and older, residing in Massachusetts., Statistical Analysis: Macronutrient intakes, collected by 24-hour dietary recall, were compared across ethnic groups by means of the general linear models procedure (with Bonferroni adjustments). Associations between macronutrient intake and predictor variables were tested with Pearson correlations and linear regression. The contribution of foods to total intake of macronutrients was determined by use of a rank procedure., Results: Hispanic elderly subjects consumed significantly less saturated fat and simple sugars and more complex carbohydrates than did non-Hispanic whites. Hispanics residing in the United States for a longer time tended to have macronutrient profiles more similar to those of the non-Hispanic whites. Rice for Hispanic and bread for non-Hispanics were the major contributors of energy. More acculturated Hispanic elders consumed fewer ethnic foods and more foods related to the non-Hispanic-white eating patterns than those less acculturated., Applications/conclusions: Efforts to promote better diets among Hispanic elders need to emphasize maintenance or adoption of healthful dietary patterns based on ethnic and modern foods that will satisfy their biological, emotional, and social needs. Dietitians and other dietetics practitioners can use the information presented here in studying nutrition-related chronic diseases, in public health planning, and in nutrition education and promotion efforts directed to ethnic-specific, elderly Hispanic groups.

Loss of stature in certain elderly subjects can be attributed to diseases such as osteoporosis, as well as to age and generational effects. In addition, many elders cannot stand straight for accurate measurement. For these cases, total height can be estimated with regression equations based on knee height. The aims of this study were, firstly, to evaluate the applicability of regression equations based on knee height for estimation of stature and, secondly, to document the differences between measured and estimated height in a group of elderly Hispanics with postural problems (n = 166) in comparison with a group of elderly Hispanic without postural problems (n = 270). Using both, estimated and measured height, we also calculated the body mass index (BMI) of both groups of elders. Statistical analyses were done with paired t-tests, within sex and study group. Within the group with postural problems, estimated height was higher than the measured height for both men (p < or = 0.001) and women (p < or = 0.001). There were no significant differences between measured and estimated height in the group without postural problems. Furthermore, in the group with postural problems, BMI values calculated with estimated height were lower than those estimated with the measured height, and these differences were also significant for both men (p < or = 0.001) and women (p < or = 0.001). With the aging of the Latin American population, there is a need for more nutrition and health research among elders. In order to do this we need to develop and use methods and criteria appropriate for each population.

Background: The accurate measurement of stature is not possible in many frail elderly persons because of problems affecting their ability to stand straight. In such cases, knee height may be used to estimate stature., Objective: This study was designed to explore the applicability of published regression equations to estimate stature of Puerto Rican and other Hispanic elderly persons living in the northeastern United States and to formulate ethnicity-specific equations for these persons., Design: The study subjects (60-92 y of age) included 569 Hispanics and a comparison group of 153 non-Hispanic whites. Equations to estimate stature of Hispanics and Puerto Ricans living in the northeastern United States were developed with regression models in a randomly selected subgroup of the Hispanics. These equations were tested with the remaining Hispanic subgroup., Results: The published equations significantly overestimated stature of our Hispanic subjects. Equations developed for Massachusetts Hispanics and Puerto Ricans provided estimates of stature that did not differ significantly from measured stature. We found further that equations for non-Hispanic whites published in 1985 predicted statures of our relatively low-income, non-Hispanic white subjects better than did newer 1998 equations developed from a national sample., Conclusions: The stature of elderly Hispanics from the northeastern United States can be estimated by using equations derived from the same population. These, or similar equations, should be used to estimate stature of frail elderly persons for whom standing height cannot be taken accurately. Socioeconomic status as well as ethnicity may affect results when knee height equations are used.

White rats were inoculated with 10(6) trypomastigotes of Trypanosoma lewisi, simultaneously or two days before and after inoculation with 10(5) oocysts of T. gondii. A greater number of cysts was found in the brain of the animals having concomitant inoculations, as compared with rats inoculated with either one of the two parasites. An apparent immunosuppressive effect is likely. Since both organisms can be found in rats, it is possible that infections with T. lewisi, could make this rodent another intermediate host for Toxoplasma infections.

This work consisted in the analysis of anthropometric data collected in 1980 in a representative sample of the adult population of the Republic of Panama, according to sex, place of residence, and age. As the data revealed, the adult Panamanian male has an average weight of 61.8 kg and a height of 165.0 cm, and the female, an average weight of 55.4 kg and a height of 154.0 cm. The average weight and height of the adult population differ in the different provinces of the country. Thus, Veraguas and San Blas have the lowest averages in weight and height while the adult men of the provinces of Panama, Bocas del Toro and Colón present the best nutritional conditions. Women increase in weight as age advances until reaching a maximum peak between 45 and 54 years of age. In the males, the average highest weight occurs at an earlier age, between 25 and 29 years old, and is maintained until the age of 45-54. From then on, a decrease in weight as age advances, begins to be observed in both sexes. Apparently, the height of the Panamanian population has increased through time, as reflected by the average height of the different age groups studied in 1980, when compared with similar information obtained in 1967. It is concluded that a Food and Nutrition Surveillance System in Panama must contemplate the inclusion of anthropometric data that describe the nutritional conditions of the adult Panamanian groups.
