Bioplastics are gaining attention as a means of reducing fossil resource dependence. Most bioplastics differ from fossil-based plastics in molecular structure, and therefore in terms of properties and durability. Still, the life cycle environmental performance of bioplastics has attracted limited attention in research. The purpose of this study is therefore to examine the importance of applying a life cycle perspective and identify key considerations in the environmental evaluation of bioplastics and bioplastic products under development. The climate impact of the life cycle of an engine component storage box currently made of the fossil-based plastic acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) is compared to a hypothetical case study, based on laboratory observations, of the same box produced from a blend of polycarbonate and the bioplastic polylactic acid (PC/PLA) and a box made of biopolyamide (PA1010). The comparison is conducted with a cradle-to-grave attributional life cycle assessment. The functional unit of the study is five years of service life, which reflects the required function of the storage box. Whereas the climate impact of the production of the different plastic materials differ only slightly, the PC/PLA engine component storage box was found to have a significantly higher climate impact that the ABS and PA1010 boxes when the whole life cycle is taken into account. The dominant contributor to climate impact is premature material deterioration due to humidity and heat during service life, which prevents the product from fulfilling the required function. Two other influential aspects are the possibility of material reuse and the share of fossil or biogenic carbon in the product. Production of plastic materials and boxes, and transport distances, are of less importance. Results demonstrate the high significance of including service life and potential material deterioration when bioplastics and fossil-based plastics are compared. Our findings underline the importance of applying a life cycle perspective and taking into account the intended application and function of bioplastics as part of their development and environmental assessment.

A variety of climate mitigation strategies is available to mitigate climate impacts of buildings. Several studies evaluating the effectiveness of these strategies have been performed at the building stock level, but do not consider the technological change in building material manufacturing. The objective of this study is to evaluate the climate mitigation effects of increasing the use of biobased materials in the construction of new residential dwellings in Sweden under future scenarios related to technological change. A model to estimate the climate impact from Swedish new dwellings has been proposed combining official statistics and life cycle assessment data of seven different dwelling typologies. Eight future scenarios for increased use of harvested wood products are explored under different pathways for changes in the market share of typologies and in energy generation. The results show that an increased use of harvested wood products results in lower climate impacts in all scenarios evaluated, but reductions decrease if the use of low-impact concrete expands more rapidly or under optimistic energy scenarios. Results are highly sensitive to the choice of climate impact metric. The Swedish construction sector can only reach maximum climate change mitigation scenarios if the low-impact building typologies are implemented together and rapidly. I Sverige idag ökar kraven alltmer på att företag och organisationer ska bedriva sin verksamhet på ett hållbart sätt, det vill säga att beakta miljömässiga och sociala aspekter. Företag och organisationer väljer i allt högre utsträckning att visa sitt arbete för att leva upp till förväntningarna genom att upprätta en hållbarhetsredovisning. I september 2014 presenterade EU:s ministerråd direktiv med förändringar gällande icke-finansiell information som innebär att det för vissa företag i Sverige blir obligatoriskt att upprätta en hållbarhetsredovisning. I hållbarhetsredovisningen ska frågor som rör miljön, sociala förhållanden, personal, mänskliga rättigheter och motverkande av korruption finnas rapporterade. Tidigare studier har undersökt varför företag väljer att hållbarhetsredovisa och vilka effekter det ger utifrån företagets perspektiv. Tidigare forskning vi tagit del av gällande revisorns roll kopplat till hållbarhetsredovisning behandlar bland annat hur intressenters inflytande påverkar revisionen av hållbarhetsredovisning. Mot denna bakgrund valde vi att studera revisorernas syn på samhällsutvecklingen inom hållbarhet. Revisorerna som inriktat sig mot att arbeta med hållbarhetsredovisning besitter kunskaper och erfarenheter som kan bidra till en ökad förståelse inom hållbarhetsutveckling. Syftet med denna studie är att beskriva revisorrollen samt öka förståelsen för revisorernas syn på hållbarhetsredovisningens betydelse och utveckling i Sverige. Studien är en kvalitativ intervjustudie där sex revisorer som inriktat sig mot hållbarhetsredovisning valts ut. Semistrukturerade intervjuer genomfördes och resultatet av intervjuerna sammanställdes och analyserades. Studien vilar på de teoretiska utgångspunkterna i intressentteorin, legitimitetsteorin och institutionella teorin samt kunskapsinhämtning från studier som behandlar revisorns roll och organisatoriska förändringar. Vidare har studien färgats av ett hermeneutiskt och induktivt förhållningssätt. Resultatet av studien visar att de intervjuade revisorerna var samstämmiga gällande hållbarhetsredovisningens fördelar och utmaningar. De fördelar som huvudsakligen framhållits rör företagets egna utveckling. Vidare visar vår studie att revisorernas roll har förändrats över tid och rådgivning har fått en alltmer framträdande plats i arbetet. Revisorerna själva anser att denna förändring kommer att fortsätta även framöver. Resultatet av studien visar även att revisionsyrket kommer att fortsätta att förändras till följd av de kommande lagförslaget men även av en ökad hållbarhetstrend. Slutligen visar resultatet av vår studie att det kommande lagförslaget snarare fungerar som ett svar på den normförändring som redan skett i samhället och därigenom innebär att den informell förväntan på hållbarhetsredovisning blir ett formellt krav.

I regeringsuppdraget ingår också att bedöma vilken typ av materialåtervinning av textilier som kan komma till stånd på kort och lång sikt och hur det bör påverka utformningen av insamlingssystemet. Naturvårdsverket gav därför i uppdrag till SP Sveriges Tekniska Forskningsinstitut att kartlägga befintlig teknik och aktuella utvecklings- och forskningsinitiativ samt att utföra en kvalificerad bedömning om möjlig framtida teknisk utveckling inom området textil materialåtervinning. I forskarstudien analyseras tekniska och miljömässiga utmaningar samt potentialen för textilåtervinning. Utifrån textilåtervinningens tekniska och miljömässiga förutsättningar ges rekommendationer för hur utmaningar kan bemötas och miljövinsten med materialåtervinning optimeras. Bedömningarna och rekommendationerna baseras på livscykelanalyser av olika scenarier för hur återvinningen kan ske.

This chapter describes the major challenges relating to LCA data and system delimitation when carrying out LCAs on products from the food industry. Food is characterised as a product where emissions related to the feedstock (agriculture) and electricity in the use (and processing) stage can be identified as hotspots. Calculation of environmental impacts from agricultural products and electricity are highly sensitive to the applied approach for modelling; consequential versus attributional. Both consequential and attributional modelling are demonstrated in different situations, and pros and cons of the two approaches are discussed. Based on this, consequential modelling is proposed as the preferable option because it takes into account cause–effect relationships, it does not ignore the effects of co-products and it maintains mass- and substance-balance of processes. Since consequential modelling seeks to be more accurate, the risk of misleading decision support is minimised in consequential modelling. The disadvantage of consequential modelling is that no commonly accepted marginal supplies of products for different countries/regions exist. The same applies for attributional modelling, but national/regional market averages are more fixed and less sensitive to assumptions introduced by the individual LCA practitioner.
