We present an experimental investigation of the magnetic ground state in Ba$_4$NbIr$_3$O$_{12}$, a fractional valent trimer iridate. X-ray absorption and photoemission spectroscopy show that the Ir valence lies between 3+ and 4+ while Nb is pentavalent. Combined dc/ac magnetization, specific heat, and muon spin rotation/relaxation ($\mu$SR) measurements reveal no magnetic phase transition down to 0.05~K. Despite a significant Weiss temperature ($\Theta_{\mathrm{W}} \sim -15$ to $-25$~K) indicating antiferromagnetic correlations, a quantum spin-liquid (QSL) phase emerges and persists down to 0.1~K. This state likely arises from geometric frustration in the edge-sharing equilateral triangle Ir network. Our $\mu$SR analysis reveals a two-component depolarization, arising from the coexistence of rapidly (90\%) and slowly (10\%) fluctuating Ir moments. Powder x-ray diffraction and Ir-L$_3$edge x-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy identify ~8-10\% Nb/Ir site-exchange, reducing frustration within part of the Ir network, and likely leading to the faster muon spin relaxation, while the structurally ordered Ir ions remain highly geometrically frustrated, giving rise to the rapidly spin-fluctuating QSL ground state. At low temperatures, the magnetic specific heat varies as $\gamma T + \alpha T^2$, indicating gapless spinon excitations, and possible Dirac QSL features with linear spinon dispersion, respectively., Comment: 27 pages, 15 figures

Frustrated magnets offer a plethora of exotic magnetic ground states, including quantum spin liquids (QSLs), in which enhanced quantum fluctuations prevent a long-range magnetic ordering of the strongly correlated spins down to lowest temperature. Here we have investigated the trimer based mixed valence hexagonal rhodate Ba$_4$NbRh$_3$O$_{12}$ using a combination of dc and ac magnetization, electrical resistivity, specific heat, and muon spin rotation/relaxation ($\mu$SR) measurements. Despite the substantial antiferromagnetic exchange interactions, as evident from the Weiss temperature ($\theta_{\mathrm{W}}\sim -35$ to -45 K), among the Rh-local moments, neither long-range magnetic ordering nor spin-freezing is observed down to at least 50 mK, in ac-susceptibility, specific heat and ZF-$\mu$SR measurements (down to 0.26 K). We ascribe the absence of any magnetic transition to enhanced quantum fluctuations as a result of geometrical frustration arising out of the edge-sharing equilateral Rh-triangular network in the structure. Our longitudinal-field $\mu$SR result evidences persistent spin fluctuations down to 0.26~K, thus stabilizing a dynamic QSL ground state in Ba$_4$NbRh$_3$O$_{12}$. Furthermore, the magnetic specific heat ($C_{\mathrm{m}}$) data at low-$T$ reveal a significant $T$-linear contribution plus a quadratic $T$-dependence. A $T$-linear behavior is evocative of gapless spin excitations, while the $T^2$-term of $C_{\mathrm{m}}$ may indicate the Dirac QSL phenomenology of the spinon excitations with a linear dispersion., Comment: 21 pages, 11 figures

Building a full understanding of the complex magnetism in the rare-earth pyrochlore iridates, A2Ir2O7, is an ongoing issue in condensed matter physics. The possibility of two interpenetrating and interacting frustrated magnetic pyrochlore sublattices, connected with the strong spin-orbit coupling of the 5d Ir4+ ion, lends itself to a wide array of potential electronic and magnetic states. In this paper, we present longitudinal field and zero field muSR measurements of Er2Ir2O7. The muSR response of Er2Ir2O7 is dominated by the strong fluctuating fields of the Er3+ (J = 15/2) moments, showing a peak in fitted relaxation rate, {\lambda}_2, at T = 15 K . The muSR spectra show just weak signatures of the Ir transition, that were easily suppressed in applied longitudinal field, however full decoupling of the muons from local magnetic fields was not achieved even in applied fields up to 3 kG., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures

Searching for an ideal Kitaev spin liquid candidate with anyonic excitations and long-range entanglement has motivated the synthesis of a new family of intercalated Kitaev magnets such as H$_{3}$LiIr$_{2}$O$_{6}$, Cu$_{2}$IrO$_{3}$, and Ag$_{3}$LiIr$_{2}$O$_{6}$. The absence of a susceptibility peak and a two-step release of the magnetic entropy in these materials has been proposed as evidence of proximity to the Kitaev spin liquid. Here we present a comparative study of the magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity, and muon spin relaxation ($\mu$SR) between two samples of Ag$_{3}$LiIr$_{2}$O$_{6}$ in the clean and disordered limits. In the disordered limit, the absence of a peak in either susceptibility or heat capacity and a weakly depolarizing $\mu$SR signal may suggest a proximate spin liquid ground state. In the clean limit, however, we resolve a peak in both susceptibility and heat capacity data, and observe clear oscillations in $\mu$SR that confirm long-range antiferromagnetic ordering. The $\mu$SR oscillations fit to a Bessel function, characteristic of an incommensurate order, as reported in the parent compound $\alpha$-Li$_{2}$IrO$_{3}$. Anyonic excitations emerging from a Kitaev spin liquid can form a basis for quantum computers. Searching for such excitations motivated intense research on the honeycomb iridate materials. However, access to a spin liquid ground state has been hindered by magnetic ordering. Cu2IrO3 is a new honeycomb iridate without thermodynamic signatures of a long-range order. Here, we use muon spin relaxation to uncover the magnetic ground state of Cu2IrO3. We find a two-component depolarization with slow and fast relaxation rates corresponding to distinct regions with dynamic and static magnetism, respectively. X-ray absorption spectroscopy and first principles calculations identify a mixed copper valence as the origin of this behavior. Our results suggest that a minority of Cu2+ ions nucleate regions of static magnetism whereas the majority of Cu+/Ir4+ on the honeycomb lattice give rise to a Kitaev spin liquid., Comment: 3 figures

A peak anomaly is observed in the magnetic susceptibility as a function of temperature in solid H2O near Tp=60 K. At external magnetic fields below 2 kOe, Tp becomes positive in the temperature range between 45 and 66 K. The magnetic field dependence of the susceptibility in the same temperature range exhibits an inverted ferromagnetic hysteretic loop superimposed on top of the diamagnetic signature of ice at fields below 600 Oe. We suggest that a fraction of protons that are capable of undergoing correlated tunneling in a hexagonal path without disrupting the stoichiometry of the lattice create an induced magnetic field opposite to the induced magnetic field created by the electrons upon application of an external field which counters the overall diamagnetism of the material., Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures

The phase diagram of H2O is extremely complex, in particular, it is believed that a second critical point exists deep below the supercooled water (SCW) region where two liquids of different densities coexist. The problem however, is that SCW freezes at temperatures just above this hypothesized liquid-liquid critical point (LLCP) so direct experimental verification of its existence has yet to be realized. Here, we report two anomalies in the complex dielectric constant during warming in the form of a peak anomaly near Tp=203 K and a sharp minimum near Tm=212 K from ice samples prepared from SCW under hydrostatic pressures up to 760 MPa. The same features were observed about 4 K higher in heavy ice. Tp is believed to be associated to the nucleation process of metastable cubic ice Ic and Tm the transitioning of ice Ic to either ices Ih or II depending on pressure. Given that Tp and Tm are nearly isothermal and present up to at least 620 MPa and ending as a critical point near 33-50 MPa, it is deduced that two types of SCW with different density concentrations exists which affects the surface energy of ice Ic nuclei in the "no man's land" region of the phase diagram. Optical and synchrotron x-ray diffraction diamond anvil cell experiments have been combined with first principles theoretical structure predictions to investigate mixed N2 and H2 up to 55 GPa. We found the formation of oligomeric NxH (x>1) compounds using mechano- and photochemistry at pressures above 47 and 10 GPa, respectively, and room temperature. These compounds can be recovered to ambient pressure at T<130 K, whereas at room temperature, they can be metastable down to 3.5 GPa. Organic superconductors are unique materials with a crystal structure made primarily of a complex carbon based network, an element associated directly with life, which were postulated to have a high critical temperature, $T_{C}$, even above room temperature, from a theoretical viewpoint. Pressure plays an essential role in the study of superconductivity in such organic materials, including creation of the first organic superconductor as well as the achievement of the highest $T_{C}$ of 14.2 K for charge transfer salts and 38 K for metal-doped fullerides. However, superconductivity in these organic systems is only sustainable within a very narrow pressure range (a few GPa) and is readily destroyed upon further compression. Here we report high-pressure magnetic susceptibility and structure measurements on a newly discovered superconductor, LaPhenanthrene. It is found that the application of pressure not only significantly increases $T_{C}$ from its ambient-pressure value of 4.8 K to 12.3 K at 18.4 GPa but also stabilizes the high $T_{C}$ over the entire pressure range (61 GPa) of the study. The evolution of $T_{C}$ with pressure is closely correlated with the angle $\beta$ of the monoclinic unit cell. Both $T_{C}$ and $\beta$ change sharply with increasing pressure initially but remain constant above 40 GPa, indicating that molecule orientation is essential to superconductivity. These behaviors can be understood in terms of pressure tuning of electron correlations, illustrating the unconventional nature of superconductivity in these hydrocarbon superconductors., Comment: 30 pages, 9 figures

The structural and vibrational properties of phenanthrene are measured at high pressures up to 30.2 GPa by Raman spectroscopy and synchrotron x-ray diffraction techniques. Two phase transitions are observed in raman spectra under pressures of 2.3 GPa and 5.4 GPa with significant changes of intermolecular and intramolecular vibrational modes, and all the raman peaks disappeared in the luminesce background above 10.2 GPa. Upon further compression above 20.0 GPa, three broad bands are observed respectively around 1600, 2993 and 3181 cm$^{-1}$ in Raman spectra, strongly indicating that phenanthrene has transformed into amorphous hydrogenated carbon. Based on x-ray diffraction, the structures of corresponding phases observed in Raman spectra are identified with space group of $P_{\rm}2_{1}$ for phase I at 0-2.2 GPa, $P_{\rm}$2/\emph{m} for phase II at 2.2-5.6 GPa and $P_{\rm}$2/\emph{m}+\emph{Pmmm} for phase III at 5.6-11.4 GPa, and the structure above 11.4 GPa is identified with space group of \emph{Pmmm}. Although phenanthrene has amorphized above 20.0 GPa, the amorphous hydrogenated carbon clusters still remain the crystalline characteristic based on x-ray diffraction patterns.
