The emergence of 100-Kyr glacial cycles (The Mid-Pleistocene Transition [MPT]) is attributed in part to slower global overturning circulation and iron stimulation of biological carbon drawdown in the Southern Ocean. We present foraminifera-bound nitrogen isotope values and polar planktic foraminifera abundances from the Agulhas Plateau that show that increases in biogenic sediment accumulation coincide with northward migrations of the Subtropical Frontal Zone (STFZ) and elevated foraminifera-bound nitrogen isotope values during MPT glacial episodes. The nitrogen isotope values of two planktic foraminifera species, Globigerina bulloides and Globorotalia inflata show remarkable coherence amongst the sea surface temperature gradient between the STFZ and SAZ, and polar foraminifera abundances, indicating a strong relationship between nitrogen isotope dynamics above the Agulhas Plateau and migrations of the STFZ. Northward migration of the STFZ may have been essential to prolonging glacial intervals by increasing deep ocean carbon storage via a northward shift of the South Westerly Winds and a reduction in upwelling, delivery of fresher surface waters into the upper limb of global overturning circulation, or inhibiting heat and salt delivery to the Atlantic as Agulhas Leakage.

The Neogene and Quaternary are characterized by enormous changes in global climate and environments, including global cooling and the establishment of northern high-latitude glaciers. These changes reshaped global ecosystems, including the emergence of tropical dry forests and savannahs that are found in Africa today, which in turn may have influenced the evolution of humans and their ancestors. However, despite decades of research we lack long, continuous, well-resolved records of tropical climate, ecosystem changes, and surface processes necessary to understand their interactions and influences on evolutionary processes. Lake Tanganyika, Africa, contains the most continuous, long continental climate record from the mid-Miocene (∼ 10 Ma) to the present anywhere in the tropics and has long been recognized as a top-priority site for scientific drilling. The lake is surrounded by the Miombo woodlands, part of the largest dry tropical biome on Earth. Lake Tanganyika also harbors incredibly diverse endemic biota and an entirely unexplored deep microbial biosphere, and it provides textbook examples of rift segmentation, fault behavior, and associated surface processes. To evaluate the interdisciplinary scientific opportunities that an ICDP drilling program at Lake Tanganyika could offer, more than 70 scientists representing 12 countries and a variety of scientific disciplines met in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, in June 2019. The team developed key research objectives in basin evolution, source-to-sink sedimentology, organismal evolution, geomicrobiology, paleoclimatology, paleolimnology, terrestrial paleoecology, paleoanthropology, and geochronology to be addressed through scientific drilling on Lake Tanganyika. They also identified drilling targets and strategies, logistical challenges, and education and capacity building programs to be carried out through the project. Participants concluded that a drilling program at Lake Tanganyika would produce the first continuous Miocene-present record from the tropics, transforming our understanding of global environmental change, the environmental context of human origins in Africa, and providing a detailed window into the dynamics, tempo and mode of biological diversification and adaptive radiations., SCOPUS: ar.j, info:eu-repo/semantics/published

- Abstract
The exchange of water masses between the Indian Ocean and the Atlantic constitutes an integral interocean link in the global thermohaline circulation. Long-term changes in deep water flow have been studied using seismic reflection profiles but the seismic stratigraphy was poorly constrained and not resolved for the time period from the late Miocene onward. Here we present results from International Ocean Discovery Program Site U1475 (Agulhas Plateau) located over a sediment drift proximal to the entrance of North Atlantic Deep Water into the Southern Ocean and South Indian Ocean. Site U1475 comprises a complete carbonate-rich stratigraphic section of the last similar to 7 Ma that provides an archive of climate-induced variations in ocean circulation. Six marker reflectors occurring in the upper 300 m of the drift are identified here for the first time. The formation of these reflectors is mainly due to density changes that are mostly caused by changes in biogenic versus terrigenous sediment deposition. Synthetic seismograms allow age assignments for the horizons based on biostratigraphy and magnetostratigraphy. Prominent reflectors are related to late Pleistocene glacial/interglacial variability, the middle and early Pleistocene transitions, and the onset of the northern hemisphere glaciation. A peculiar early Pliocene interval (similar to 5.3-4.0 Ma) bounded by two reflectors is characterized by fourfold elevated sedimentation rates (> 10 cm/kyr) and the occurrence of sediment waves. We argue that this enhanced sediment transport to the Agulhas Plateau was caused by a reorganization of the bottom current circulation pattern due to maximized inflow of North Atlantic Deep Water.

Vector sensors are directional receivers that measure the vectorial particle velocity associated with an acoustic wave rather than the scalar pressure. Therefore, arrays of vector sensors possess some desirable directional properties compared to conventional arrays of pressure sensors. In this paper, a modal beamformer for circular arrays of 1-D acoustic vectors sensors are presented. Arrays of both radially and circumferentially oriented vector sensors are considered. It is shown that the highly directional modes of the acoustic velocity field can be extracted from the sensor measurements using the spatial Fourier transform. These modes are weighted and combined to form narrow steerable beams. The highest order of mode that can be extracted is limited by the number of vector sensors utilized in the array. Theoretical analysis and numerical simulations indicate that the proposed modal beamformer attains the same directivity performance as that of circular pressure sensor array beamformers but outperforms them in terms of white noise gain. In addition, it uses half the number of sensors to achieve the same directivity performance of a circular vector sensor array modal beamformer reported previously in the literature. The proposed method is suitable for in-air and underwater low frequencies array processing applications.

Abstract We aimed to determine the prognostic role of ileal resection on postoperative complications and the final oncological results of cytoreductive surgery (CRS) and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) treatment in patients with peritoneal metastasis (PM). Patients with PM who underwent CRS and HIPEC between 2007 and 2020 were analyzed retrospectively. Ileal resection was defined as the resection of the ileum at 100 cm or below. Patients were divided into ileal-resection and non-ileal resection groups. Besides clinico-pathological variables, peritoneal cancer index (PCI), completeness of cytoreduction (CC-0-1-2), (neo)adjuvant chemotherapy, operative time, need for surgical intensive care unit, and usage of blood products were all evaluated. The data of 664 patients was analyzed. Ileal resection was performed in 346(52.1%) patients. The median follow-up period was 27 months. - Abstract
African climate is generally considered to have evolved towards progressively drier conditions over the past few million years, with increased variability as glacial–interglacial change intensified worldwide1, 2, 3. Palaeoclimate records derived mainly from northern Africa exhibit a 100,000-year (eccentricity) cycle overprinted on a pronounced 20,000-year (precession) beat, driven by orbital forcing of summer insolation, global ice volume and long-lived atmospheric greenhouse gases4. Here we present a 1.3-million-year-long climate history from the Lake Malawi basin (10°–14° S in eastern Africa), which displays strong 100,000-year (eccentricity) cycles of temperature and rainfall following the Mid-Pleistocene Transition around 900,000 years ago. Interglacial periods were relatively warm and moist, while ice ages were cool and dry. The Malawi record shows limited evidence for precessional variability, which we attribute to the opposing effects of austral summer insolation and the temporal/spatial pattern of sea surface temperature in the Indian Ocean. The temperature history of the Malawi basin, at least for the past 500,000 years, strongly resembles past changes in atmospheric carbon dioxide and terrigenous dust flux in the tropical Pacific Ocean, but not in global ice volume. Climate in this sector of eastern Africa (unlike northern Africa) evolved from a predominantly arid environment with high-frequency variability to generally wetter conditions with more prolonged wet and dry intervals.

Vector sensors are directional acoustic sensors that can make collocated measurements of both the acoustic pressure and the particle motion (in general velocity or acceleration). Combining the particle acceleration or velocity measurements with pressure, it is possible to estimate the intensity of the acoustic field, which in turn is related to the direction of the net acoustic energy propagation. Recently, several novel beamforming and array processing methods have been proposed that enable the development of compact linear and circular vector sensor arrays with inter-sensor spacing much less than the traditional spacing of one-half the design wavelength. These methods, albeit differing in implementation, both rely on the extraction and processing of the so-called “acoustic modes” of the sound field and have shown to be successful in estimating source direction relative to the array in a 2-D setting. The work described here, builds on previous results and extends the direction-of-arrival estimation methods to source tracking. Several algorithms developed for this purpose and implemented on both array types are introduced. The proposed approaches are experimentally validated using air-borne and underwater sources for compact pressure and 1-D vector sensor arrays.

21. Gradient based processing for linear vector sensor

The demand for higher performance arrays, coupled with recent advancements in vector sensor technology, has resulted in a surge in research on vector sensor based arrays in the past decade. In this paper, a new approach to vector sensor array processing is proposed. The method relies on extracting the so called 'acoustic modes' of the propagating wavefield using the spatial gradients of the field variables. These gradients are approximated with a finite difference scheme along a uniform linear array of vector sensors. The proposed method is evaluated through a series of numerical simulations. The resulting broadband beamformer is shown to have a directivity factor comparable to conventional beamformers with much larger apertures while providing all the advantages of acoustic vector sensors such as port-starboard discrimination. Owing to the sufficiency of shorter apertures and other potential operational advantages, the proposed method is suitable for use in short towed arrays with autonomous underwater platforms.

Summary: Background: Early death after cancer surgery is higher in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs) compared with in high-income countries, yet the impact of facility characteristics on early postoperative outcomes is unknown. The aim of this study was to examine the association between hospital infrastructure, resource availability, and processes on early outcomes after cancer surgery worldwide. Methods: A multimethods analysis was performed as part of the GlobalSurg 3 study—a multicentre, international, prospective cohort study of patients who had surgery for breast, colorectal, or gastric cancer. The primary outcomes were 30-day mortality and 30-day major complication rates. Potentially beneficial hospital facilities were identified by variable selection to select those associated with 30-day mortality. Adjusted outcomes were determined using generalised estimating equations to account for patient characteristics and country-income group, with population stratification by hospital. Findings: Between April 1, 2018, and April 23, 2019, facility-level data were collected for 9685 patients across 238 hospitals in 66 countries (91 hospitals in 20 high-income countries; 57 hospitals in 19 upper-middle-income countries; and 90 hospitals in 27 low-income to lower-middle-income countries). The availability of five hospital facilities was inversely associated with mortality: ultrasound, CT scanner, critical care unit, opioid analgesia, and oncologist. New biomarker analyses from Lake Albert, East Africa spanning ~15–9 ka show the most extreme, abrupt, multi-stage climate and environmental shifts during the last deglacial transition of anywhere in Africa. Records of hydroclimate expressed in compound specific δD values from terrestrial leaf waxes and a TEX86 paleotemperature record support multiple stages of pronounced drying and cooling from 13.8 to 11.5 ka and demonstrate the dynamic behavior of the low latitude tropics during the deglaciation. The vegetation response, illustrated by compound specific δ13C values and fossil pollen records, was an expansion of C4 grassland when the region was cool and arid. These results advance our understanding of a spatially and temporally complex regional response to global climate forcing, suggesting weakening of the Indian Ocean monsoon at the end of the Pleistocene that coincides with a minor decrease in the rate of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) and during a time of stepwise cooling in the northern high latitudes.

Recent interest in the West Indian manatee (Trichechus manatus latirostris) vocalizations has been primarily induced by an effort to reduce manatee mortality rates due to watercraft collisions. A warning system based on passive acoustic detection of manatee vocalizations is desired. The success and feasibility of such a system depends on effective denoising of the vocalizations in the presence of high levels of background noise. In the last decade, simple and effective wavelet domain nonlinear denoising methods have emerged as an alternative to linear estimation methods. However, the denoising performances of these methods degrades considerably with decreasing signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and therefore are not suited for denoising manatee vocalizations in which the typical SNR is below 0 dB. Manatee vocalizations possess a strong harmonic content and a slow decaying autocorrelation function. In this paper, an efficient denoising scheme that exploits both the autocorrelation function of manatee vocalizations and effectiveness of the nonlinear wavelet transform based denoising algorithms is introduced. The suggested wavelet-based denoising algorithm is shown to outperform linear filtering methods, extending the detection range of vocalizations.

New molecular proxies of temperature and hydrology are helping to constrain tropical climate change and elucidate possible forcing mechanisms during the Holocene. Here, we examine a ∼14,000 year record of climate variability from Lake Victoria, East Africa, the world's second largest freshwater lake by surface area. We determined variations in local hydroclimate using compound specific δD of terrestrial leaf waxes, and compared these results to a new record of temperature utilizing the TEX86 paleotemperature proxy, based on aquatic Thaumarchaeotal membrane lipids. In order to assess the impact of changing climate on the terrestrial environment, we generated a record of compound specific δ13C from terrestrial leaf waxes, a proxy for ecosystem-level C3/C4 plant abundances, and compared the results to previously published pollen-inferred regional vegetation shifts. We observe a general coherence between temperature and rainfall, with a warm, wet interval peaking ~10–9 ka and subsequent gradual cooling and drying over the remainder of the Holocene. These results, particularly those of rainfall, are in general agreement with other tropical African climate records, indicating a somewhat consistent view of climate over a wide region of tropical East Africa. The δ13C record from Lake Victoria leaf waxes does not appear to reflect changes in regional climate or vegetation. However, palynological analyses document an abrupt shift from a Poaceae (grasses)-dominated ecosystem during the cooler, arid late Pleistocene to a Moraceae-dominated (trees/shrubs) landscape during the warm, wet early Holocene. As part of the Manatee Avoidance Technology program of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, several experiments were conducted between the years 2004 and 2008 in the coastal waters of Florida within typical West Indian manatee (Trichechus manatus latirostris) habitats. The primary purpose of these experiments was to evaluate several vocalization enhancement and noise suppression algorithms. Most of the experiments were conducted in brackish waters having depths less than 30 ft with silt and grassy seabeds. The analysis of the data collected during these experiments revealed certain phenomena pertinent to manatee communication. This talk will focus on the acoustic propagation characteristics observed at these manatee habitats. Signal detection in the presence of noise is a commonly encountered problem in underwater acoustic signal processing and arises in many applications involving active and passive sonar. The detection problem becomes especially challenging if the signal to be detected is weak compared to background noise. In this work, the problem of detecting weak narrow‐band bio‐acoustic signals in noisy underwater acoustic environments is addressed. In contrast to most previous work, multi‐channel setups are also considered and improvements in detector performances using multi‐channel setups are investigated. Both Gaussian and non‐Gaussian impulsive noise models are studied. Several parametric and nonparametric detectors are developed and implemented. The detection performance and range of these detectors in detecting manatee vocalizations buried in actual underwater acoustic noise recordings dominated by boat noise and snapping shrimp crackles are evaluated. Preliminary results indicate that these detectors outperform previously developed ad hoc detectors, thereby increasing the detection range and effectiveness of a proposed automated manatee avoidance system that is envisioned to reduce watercraft‐manatee collisions.

One aspect of the feasibility of an acoustically based manatee detection system relies upon the distance in which a manatee vocalization is detectable. The magnitude of environmental noise, manatee vocalizations, as well as the acoustic spreading properties of the habitat need to be considered to estimate the detection range of a vocalizing manatee. The simulation presented combines measured source levels of manatee vocalizations with the modeled acoustic properties of manatee habitats to illustrate the effective ranges in which manatees are detectable. The simulation indicates that background noise significantly affects the detectable range.

In the last decade, novel research on the wavelet transform has led to its recognition as a promising tool for denoising signals. Wavelet‐coefficient‐shrinkage‐based denoising algorithms have been applied in various fields of science and engineering and successful results have been reported in Raman spectroscopy and medical imagery. Within this study, the wavelet transform is used to denoise manatee vocalization recordings corrupted with typical underwater noise such as boat, snapping shrimp, and water movement noise. The detection range and performance of acoustically based detection systems depends greatly on the SNR of the acoustic signal. A selective thresholding is performed on the wavelet coefficients and the denoised vocalizations are obtained through the reconstruction of these coefficients. The performance of the method presented is benchmarked against the well‐known wavelet‐coefficient‐shrinkage‐based denoising algorithms using the same underwater acoustic data obtained in prior studies. - Abstract
The Pliocene Epoch (∼5.3-2.6 million years ago, Ma) was characterized by a warmer than present climate with smaller Northern Hemisphere ice sheets, and offers an example of a climate system in long-term equilibrium with current or predicted near-future atmospheric CO2 concentrations (pCO2). A long-term trend of ice-sheet expansion led to more pronounced glacial (cold) stages by the end of the Pliocene (∼2.6 Ma), known as the “intensification of Northern Hemisphere Glaciation” (iNHG). We assessed the spatial and temporal variability of ocean temperatures and ice-volume indicators through the late Pliocene and early Pleistocene (from 3.3 to 2.4 Ma) to determine the character of this climate transition. We identified asynchronous shifts in long-term means and the pacing and amplitude of shorter-term climate variability, between regions and between climate proxies. Early changes in Antarctic glaciation and Southern Hemisphere ocean properties occurred even during the mid-Piacenzian warm period (∼3.264-3.025 Ma) which has been used as an analogue for future warming. Increased climate variability subsequently developed alongside signatures of larger Northern Hemisphere ice sheets (iNHG). Yet, some regions of the ocean felt no impact of iNHG, particularly in lower latitudes. Our analysis has demonstrated the complex, non-uniform and globally asynchronous nature of climate changes associated with the iNHG. Shifting ocean gateways and ocean circulation changes may have pre-conditioned the later evolution of ice sheets with falling atmospheric pCO2. Further development of high-resolution, multi-proxy reconstructions of climate is required so that the full potential of the rich and detailed geological records can be realized.
