WOS: 000455908800007, PubMed ID: 30745939, OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study is to detect the prevalence and the factors associated with influenza and pneumococcal vaccination and outcomes of vaccination during 2013-2014 season in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in Turkey. METHODS: This was a multicenter retrospective cohort study performed in 53 different centers in Turkey. RESULTS: During the study period, 4968 patients were included. COPD was staged as GOLD 1-2-3-4 in 9.0%, 42.8%, 35.0%, and 13.2% of the patients, respectively. Influenza vaccination rate in the previous year was 37.9%; and pneumococcus vaccination rate, at least once during in a life time, was 13.3%. Patients with older age, higher level of education, more severe COPD, and comorbidities, ex-smokers, and patients residing in urban areas had higher rates of influenza vaccination. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that advanced age, higher education levels, presence of comorbidities, higher COPD stages, and exacerbation rates were associated with both influenza and pneumococcal vaccination. The number of annual physician/outpatient visits and hospitalizations due to COPD exacerbation was 2.73 +/- 2.85 and 0.92 +/- 1.58 per year, respectively. Patients with older age, lower education levels, more severe COPD, comorbid diseases, and lower body mass index and patients who are male and are residing in rural areas and vaccinated for influenza had significantly higher rates of COPD exacerbation. CONCLUSIONS: The rates of influenza and pneumococcal vaccination in COPD patients were quite low, and the number of annual physician/outpatient visits and hospitalizations due to COPD exacerbation was high in Turkey. Advanced age, higher education levels, comorbidities, and higher COPD stages were associated with both influenza and pneumococcal vaccination.

There are only a few studies in the literature investigating the effects of gestational age on developmental dysplasia of the hip. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of gestational age on hip ultrasound findings in the early neonatal period in preterm newborns born between 30th and 36th weeks of gestational age. Between January 2008 and December 2013, a total of 788 hips of 394 premature newborns with a gestational age of up to 36th weeks who underwent hip ultrasonography in the first week of their life were retrospectively examined. The distribution of roof angles and hip types in terms of sexes was compared between groups. Birth weight, birth height, a, and beta angles were analyzed in terms of the gestational age. The mean gestational age was 33.07 weeks (SD 2.09; between 30th and 36th). Six hundred and seven hips were classified as type I, 154 as type IIa, 21 as type IIc, and 6 as type III. In the 30th week, type IIc hips in females and type III hips in males were statistically significantly higher (P=0.001). In the 34th week, type IIc hips in males were statistically significantly higher than the females (P=0.013). In the 35th week, type IIa hips in females hips were statistically significantly higher than the males (P=0.008). Among all preterm infants, type IIc hips were more common in the 30th, 31st, 32nd, and 34th weeks, whereas type III hips were statistically significantly more common in the 30th week (P=0.0001). The 30th, 31st, 32nd, and 34th weeks of age are gestational ages that should be considered in terms of dysplastic and subluxed hips in premature newborns. Turkiye Klinikleri, Objective: Sivas is the leading region with regard to the intensity of environmental asbestos exposure in our country. Clinical observations suggest pulmonary and/or pleural involvements to various degrees, due to this exposure. However, although most common asbestosis formations were found in the southern and south-eastern parts of Sivas, the incidence of mesothelioma is lower in this region compared to northern and north-western parts. The objectives of this study were to examine the cause of this situation by means of mineralogical, clinical and radiological data and to investigate both the prevalence of asbestosis-related diseases and the frequency of malignancy based on verbal autopsy findings in residents of these two regions. Material and Methods: The individuals born in two villages situated each in two different study regions and lived at least 20 years in those villages, who were accessible and aged 20 years or older and who agreed to participate in the study were enrolled. The mineralogical compositions of inorganic samples taken from habitats in the towns were determined by the X-ray diffraction (XRD) method. Physical examination and posteroanterior chest X-ray were done following thorough medical history including age, gender, occupation, asbestos exposure, family history, and respiratory symptoms. The X-rays were evaluated according to the 2000 Classification of the International Labor Organization. Results: Mineralogical examinations showed that tremolite asbestos was not detected in our region and the samples contained chrysotile asbestos at similar intensity. The study included 96 participants. Verbal autopsy investigation revealed cancer in the family history of 49 (50.5%) subjects. Dyspnea was the most common symptom, being present in 32 (33%) patients. Twenty-nine (30%) cases had at least one physical examination finding. In terms of parenchymal, pleural and additional pathologies, there was no significant difference between chest radiographs of patients who lived in two villages. Small parenchymal opacities consistent with asbestosis and pleural pathology were found in 25 (25.8%) and 24 (24.7%) cases, respectively. Of the 96 subjects with chest x-rays, 37 (38.1%) had parenchymal 1/0 and above densities compatible with pneumoconiosis. Pleural pathology was detected in 24.7% and additional pathologies were detected in 69.1% of the cases. Ankara University, Introduction: This study, to examine the outcomes of the respiratory disability assessment in our clinic. Materials and Methods: The reports of 136 patients who attended the chest diseases clinic between January 2010 and June 2011 for the assessment of the respiratory disability were examined retrospectively. Results: Of 10.457 patients who presented in 18 months, 136 (1.3%) requested the assessment of the respiratory disability. The patients' average age was 51 ± 12 years and 118 (87%) were male. Farmers constituted 19.8% of the patients and mine and foundry workers 10.7% of the patients. The most frequent symptoms were dyspnea (91.2%) and cough (76.5%). The most frequent radiological pattern was reticular and nodular opacities (38.2%). The workup led to a diagnosis of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in 64 patients (47%) and of interstitial pulmonary disease/pneumoconiosis in 19 (14%) patients. No respiratory disease was found in 19 patients. Among 44 (32.4%) patients for whom disability rate was calculated, 8 (18.2%) had an incapacity rate of 60% or higher and 13 had 0%. The disability rates showed positive correlations with age, the duration of the respiratory symptoms and PaCO2 level (respectively r= 0.395, p= 0.008; r= 0.391, p= 0.009; r= 0.790, p< 0.001), and negative correlations with FVC, FEV1 and PaO2 levels (respectively r= -0.681, p< 0.001; r= -0.766, p< 0.001; r= -0.661, p= 0.003). Linear regression analysis showed that high PaCO2 value is a determinant for a high disability rate (r= 0.902, p= 0.014). Furthermore, smokers had higher disability rates than non-smokers (p< 0.001). Brucellosis is still a serious infectious disease that remains being an important causes of morbidity for humans. It can be seen at all age and almost everywhere in world as well as in the Mediterranean countries. Besides the muscle and joint involvement, it may appear different clinical tables such as pneumonia, empyema, lung abscess, prostatitis, endocarditis, meningoencephalitis or brain abscess. Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate the clinical effects of the short and long term inhaler corticosteroid (ICS) use on oral and periodontal health in asthmatic patients. Methods: Control group was consisted of 17 subjects who had no systemic problems, while the study group consisted of 51 patients with asthma using ICS. Study groups were divided into three subgroups in respect of the duration of ICS use. The clinical parameters such as Plaque Index (PI), Gingival Index (GI), Clinical attachment levels (CAL), Probing depth (PD), DMFT and salivary pH were recorded. Intraoral examination of patients was done for any mucosal pathology. Obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS) is the most common sleep disorder that can lead to serious complications. Polysomnography (PSG) is the gold standard for the diagnosis of OSAHS. Unfortunately, PSG studies are expensive, time-consuming, requiring special team and equipment. Therefore, it is possible to determine the cases likely to have OSAHS requiring at least PSG by type A studies. There isn't enough data about the prevalence of OSAHS in Turkey. The aim of this study was to estimate the symptom prevalence of OSAHS in health-care providers in central Sivas. The questionnaire asking demographic features, additional diseases, habits, the symptoms related with OSAHS was performed in total of 1202 health care providers. We also performed Epworth sleepiness scale (ESS) to determine excessive daytime sleepiness. Snoring was detected in 267 partitiants. Snoring rates were 38% and 10.9% in men and in women, respectively. The rate of witnessed sleep apnea in all cases was 4.4% (n= 53). Witnessed sleep apnea was reported by 42 of men (8.4%) and 11 of women (1.6%). A total of 338 partitiant had excessive daytime sleepiness. There was a significant relation between three major symptoms of OSAHS and excessive sleepiness while driving. All three major symptoms were detected in 22 cases (1.8%), of which 21 were males. Long-term (? 15 hours) oxygen therapy (LTOT) increases life-span and improves quality of life (QOL) in patients with chronic respiratory failure (CRF). However, in our clinical practice, we observed that very few patients are using oxygen therapy 15 hours or more. Furthermore, very few literatures about survival of non- or inadequate oxygen users were found. Thus, the aim of this study was to assess the effect of LTOT in patients with CRF. A total of 305 LTOT recommended patients with CRF in our clinic between 1996 and 2001 were found. A hundred and five patients with documented subject characteristics were included the study and followed-up ?20 months prospectively. They were divided into two groups whether to take LTOT (group 1, n= 71) or not (group 2, n= 34). Average life-span of the patients was 50 months in group 1 and 39 months in group 2 (p< 0.05). Survival (months) in group 1 was significantly correlated with hrs of oxygen use (r= 0.684, p= 0.001). One more hour oxygen use was statistically significantly correlated with 0.002 months more survival (F= 48.44, p< 0.05) in group 1 in logistic regression analysis. In comparisons, there were significant improvement in the post-treatment blood gas values in group 1 (p< 0.05). There were significant decreases in PFT values in the post-treatment period when compared to baseline values in both groups (p< 0.05). There was a less decrease in FEV1 values per year in group 1 than group 2 but difference was not statistically significant (p> 0.05). In conclusion our findings revealed that LTOT provides improvement of the life-span of the patients with CRF., Do?an, Ö. In this study, in vitro antioxidant, antimicrobial and DNA damage protection potentials of the aqueous extract of Asplenium ceterach was firstly evaluated in addition to its total phenolic and flavonoid contents. Antioxidant activity was determined by five complementary test systems named β- carotene/linoleic acid, 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical scavenging, reducing power, chelating effect and phosphomolibdenum methods. Except for chelating effect assay, the extract exhibited remarkable activity potential. Antimicrobial activity was determined by agar-well diffusion and minimum inhibitory concentration tests. In this case, Shigella dysenteriae and Staphylococcus aureus were found to be the most sensitive microorganisms. According to the electrophoretic pattern of pBR322 plasmid DNA after treatment with UV and H2O2, supercoiled DNA was successfully protected in the presence of 20 mg/ml or above concentrations of aqueous extract.Key words: Antioxidant activity, antimicrobial activity, DNA damage protection, Asplenium ceterach.

WOS: 000288564500007, This study was designed to examine the in vitro antimicrobial and antioxidant activities of the essential oil of T. boveii and T. hyemalis. According to the results of GC-EIMS analysis, essential oils were found rich in phenols and hydrocarbons. p-cymene, thymol and carvacrol were mainly found as the major compounds for the essential oils. Both plant species showed remarkable antioxidant activity in all test systems except chelating effect.
