Abstract

The nucleosynthesis of elements beyond iron is dominated by neutron captures in the s and r processes. However, 32 stable, proton-rich isotopes cannot be formed during those processes, because they are shielded from the s-process flow and r-process beta-decay chains. These nuclei are attributed to the p and rp process. For all those processes, current research in nuclear astrophysics addresses the need for more precise reaction data involving radioactive isotopes. Depending on the particular reaction, direct or inverse kinematics, forward or time-reversed direction are investigated to determine or at least to constrain the desired reaction cross sections. The Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR) will offer unique, unprecedented opportunities to investigate many of the important reactions. The high yield of radioactive isotopes, even far away from the valley of stability, allows the investigation of isotopes involved in processes as exotic as the r or rp processes., Comment: Invited Talk given at the Conference Nuclear Physice in Astrophysics VI (NPA6), Lisbon, Portugal, May 19-24 2013. Abstract

The ISOLDE Scientific Infrastructure at CERN offers a unique range of post-accelerated radioactive beams. The scientific program can be improved with the “Isolde Superconducting Recoil Separator” (ISRS), an innovative spectrometer able to deliver unprecedented (A, Z) resolution. In this paper we present an overview of the physics and ongoing technical developments.

Abstract

The GLObal ReactIon Array (GLORIA) has been designed in order to study direct nuclear reactions induced by exotic nuclei at energies close to the Coulomb barrier. The detector array consists of six silicon particle-telescopes arranged in a very close geometry around a 30° rotated-target system, allowing the measurement of reaction fragments in a continuous angular range from 15° to 165° (Lab.). GLORIA has been used for the first time at the SPIRAL/GANIL facility at Caen (France) to study the scattering of the system 8He+208Pb at the collision energies of 16 and 22 MeV.

Abstract

The exotic nucleus 8He is investigated by means of the measurement of the angular distributions of the elastic channel and the 6He and 4He fragment yields produced in the collision with a 208Pb target at two energies around the Coulomb barrier, 16 and 22 MeV. The experiment was performed at the GANIL-SPIRAL facility, with the aim of extracting information about the structure of 8He and the relevant reaction mechanisms. In this contribution, details of the experimental setup and preliminary data on elastic cross sections are reported.

Abstract

Correlations between two or more particles can be used as a tool to explore the space-time features of nuclear reactions as well as spectroscopic properties of produced unbound clusters. In order to have new options to study the mentioned correlations, FARCOS (Femtoscope ARray for COrrelations and Spectroscopy) has been conceived as a compact high resolution array, composed of square telescopes. In this work the main features of FARCOS array as well as part of the physics cases are described.

Abstract

International audience; Angular distributions for the inclusive He4 and He6 production cross sections in the He8+Pb208 system at incident energies of 16 and 22 MeV measured at the SPIRAL facility of the GANIL laboratory are presented. Using a combination of kinematical arguments and distorted wave Born approximation (DWBA) calculations, neutron transfer reactions were inferred to be the dominant contributors to both inclusive cross sections. Model-dependent values for the ratios of two- to one-neutron stripping, σ2n/σ1n, were derived and compared with previous results for He8 and He6 projectiles incident on other heavy targets. Three- and four-neutron stripping were inferred to be the main processes leading to He4 production, although the exact mechanism remains to be elucidated.

Abstract

The experimental study of the fusion of light neutron-rich nucleus 8He with 206Pb is reported in this work. A fusion stack of 206Pb targets has been used for this study. The most prominent evaporation residue (210Po), which has half-life of 138 days and decays by alpha emission, is populated in the reaction. Radiochemical analysis technique is used to extract the yield of this evaporation residue.

Abstract

Angular distributions for the inclusive He-4 and He-6 production cross sections in the He-8 + Pb-208 system at incident energies of 16 and 22 MeV measured at the SPIRAL facility of the GANIL laboratory are presented. Using a combination of kinematical arguments and distorted wave Born approximation (DWBA) calculations, neutron transfer reactions were inferred to be the dominant contributors to both inclusive cross sections. Model-dependent values for the ratios of two- to one-neutron stripping, sigma(2n)/sigma(1n), were derived and compared with previous results for He-8 and He-6 projectiles incident on other heavy targets. Three- and four-neutron stripping were inferred to be the main processes leading to He-4 production, although the exact mechanism remains to be elucidated.

Dramatic differences in the elastic scattering of the neutron rich nuclei 6He and 8He are found when new high quality data for the 8He+208Pb system are compared with previously published 6He+208Pb data at the same laboratory frame incident energy. The new 8He data are of the same level of detail as for stable beams. When comparing them with those previously obtained for 6He+208Pb at the same energy, it is possible to determine from the data alone that 6He has a much longer range absorption than 8He. However, both nuclei show significant absorption beyond their strong absorption radii. Abstract

The structure and dynamics of 8He have been studied through the collision process with a 208 Pb target at energies of 22 and 16 MeV, above and below the Coulomb barrier, respectively. The energy and angular distributions of the elastically scattered 8He and the 6,4He fragments were measured. In this paper, we discuss the method used to determine the effective position of the beam spot on the reaction target and the scattering and solid angles of each pixel of the detector array.

Abstract

The nucleosynthesis of elements beyond iron is dominated by neutron captures in the s and r processes. However, 32 stable, proton-rich isotopes cannot be formed during those processes, because they are shielded from the s-process flow and r-process, β-decay chains. These nuclei are attributed to the p and rp process. For all those processes, current research in nuclear astrophysics addresses the need for more precise reaction data involving radioactive isotopes. Depending on the particular reaction, direct or inverse kinematics, forward or time-reversed direction are investigated to determine or at least to constrain the desired reaction cross sections. The Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR) will offer unique, unprecedented opportunities to investigate many of the important reactions. The high yield of radioactive isotopes, even far away from the valley of stability, allows the investigation of isotopes involved in processes as exotic as the r or rp processes., Conference Paper

Abstract

The nucleosynthesis of elements beyond iron is dominated by neutron captures in the s and r processes. However, 32 stable, proton-rich isotopes cannot be formed during those processes, because they are shielded from the s-process ow and r-process -decay chains. These nuclei are attributed to the p and rp process. For all those processes, current research in nuclear astrophysics addresses the need for more precise reaction data involving radioactive isotopes. Depending on the particular reaction, direct or inverse kinematics, forward or time-reversed direction are investigated to determine or at least to constrain the desired reaction cross sections. The Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR) will oer unique, unprecedented opportunities to investigate many of the important reactions. The high yield of radioactive isotopes, even far away from the valley of stability, allows the investigation of isotopes involved in processes as exotic as the r or rp processes.

Abstract

The GLObal ReactIon Array (GLORIA) has been designed in order to study direct nuclear reactions induced by exotic nuclei at energies close to the Coulomb barrier. The detector array consists of six silicon particle-telescopes arranged in a very close geometry around a 30° rotated-target system, allowing the measurement of reaction fragments in a continuous angular range from 15° to 165° (Lab.). GLORIA has been used for the first time at the SPIRAL/GANIL facility at Caen (France) to study the scattering of the system 8He+208Pb at the collision energies of 16 and 22 MeV.

Abstract

We have measured the angular distributions of elastic scattering and 6,4He fragments produced in the collisions of an exotic beam of 8He on a 208Pb target at laboratory energies of 18 and 22 MeV, just around the Coulomb barrier (19 MeV). The measurements were performed at the SPIRAL/GANIL facility in Caen, France. In this paper, we present preliminary data on elastic cross sections and discuss the results using optical model and coupled reaction channel calculations. Abstract

International audience; Detected energy, charge rise-time and pulse shape identfication capabilities of nTD silicon detectors under prolonged irradiation by energetic heavy ions have been studied. Sizeable effects on the amplitude and the risetime of the charge signal have been found for detectors irradiated with large fluences of stopped heavy ions, while much weaker effects were observed for punchingthrough ions. The robustness of ion identification based on digital pulse shape techniques has been evaluated.

Abstract

International audience; The skin nucleus 8He is investigated by measuring the angular distribution of the elasticly scattered 8He and the 6,4He fragments produced in the collision with a 208Pb target at 22 MeV, just above the Coulomb barrier. The experiment was carried out at SPIRAL/GANIL in 2010. Here we present preliminary results for the elastic scattering.

Abstract

We have measured the angular distributions of elastic scattering and 6,4He fragments produced in the collisions of an exotic beam of 8He on a 208Pb target at laboratory energies of 18 and 22 MeV, just around the Coulomb barrier (19 MeV). The measurements were performed at the SPIRAL/GANIL facility in Caen, France. Abstract

The response of a few silicon-silicon-CsI(Tl) and silicon-silicon telescopes with high quality detectors developed within the FAZIA collaboration [1] is tested in this work. The silicon detectors were manufactured from “random cut” wafers to avoid channeling effects and are characterized by a high dopant homogeneity. One siliconsilicon telescope was mounted on a rotating platform to compare its response in case of front and rear injection. Another silicon detector was mounted on a motorized support, sliding to angles very close to the beam (~0.5°), in order to measure the effects of radiation damage on energy resolution and PSA. Beams of 84Kr and 129Xe at 35A MeV, impinging on targets of natNi, 93Nb, 120Sn and Au, produced fragments over a large range of charge, mass and energy. The aim was to explore the capabilities of various solutions exploiting the digital techniques of Pulse Shape Analisys (PSA) for the Z and A identification of stopped ions. It has been found that PSA is able to fully discriminate the charge of stopped ions up to the maximum available Z (that of the beam, Z=54). The ΔE-E correlations of the first two silicon detectors can separate all the nuclides up to Z~25 and no difference in resolution between front and rear injection is observed. The experimental data also provide some preliminary information about the effects of radiation damage on energy resolution and PSA for high fluences of heavy ions.

Abstract

The exotic nucleus 8He is investigated by means of the measurement of the angular distributions of the elastic channel and the 6He and 4He fragment yields produced in the collision with a 208Pb target at two energies around the Coulomb barrier, 16 and 22 MeV. The experiment was performed at the GANIL-SPIRAL facility, with the aim of extracting information about the structure of 8He and the relevant reaction mechanisms. Abstract

In this paper we describe a compact and large solid-angle silicon array, the GLObal ReactIon Array (GLORIA), designed to study direct nuclear reactions induced by exotic nuclei at energies close to the Coulomb barrier. The detector array consists of six particle-telescopes arranged in a very close geometry around a 30° rotated-target system, allowing for the measurement of reaction fragments in a continuous angular range from 15° to 165° (Lab). GLORIA has been used for first time at the SPIRAL/GANIL facility at Caen (France) to study the scattering of the system 8He+208Pb at the collision energies of 16 and 22 MeV.
