Search

The family of SU(2) theories with matter transforming in the adjoint representation has attracted interest from many angles. The two-flavour theory, known as Minimal Walking Technicolor, has a body of evidence pointing to it being in the conformal window with anomalous dimension $\gamma_{*}\approx0.3$. Perturbative calculations would suggest that the one-flavour theory should be confining and chirally broken; however, lattice studies of the theory have been inconclusive. In this contribution we present a first look at efforts towards the computation of the beta function of these theories using the gradient flow methodology. Following an exploration of the phase diagram of the two theories with Wilson fermions and additional Pauli-Villars fields, we tune the bare fermion mass to near the chiral limit, and subsequently generate ensembles at five lattice volumes and a range of lattice spacings., Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures. We provide an extended lattice study of the SU(2) gauge theory coupled to one Dirac fermion flavour ($N_{\mathrm{f}} =1$) transforming in the adjoint representation as the continuum limit is approached. This investigation is supplemented by numerical results obtained for the SU(2) gauge theory with two Dirac fermion flavours ($N_{\mathrm{f}} =2$) transforming in the adjoint representation, for which we perform numerical investigations at a single lattice spacing value, which is analysed together with earlier calculations. The purpose of our study is to advance the characterisation of the infrared properties of both theories, which previous investigations have concluded to be in the conformal window. For both, we determine the mass spectrum and the anomalous dimension of the fermion condensate using finite-size hyperscaling of the spectrum, mode number analysis of the Dirac operator (for which we improve on our previous proposal) and the ratio of masses of the lightest spin-2 particle over the lightest scalar. All methods provide a consistent picture, with the anomalous dimension of the condensate $\gamma_*$ decreasing significantly as one approaches the continuum limit for the $N_{\mathrm{f}} = 1$ theory towards a value consistent with $\gamma_* = 0.174(6)$, while for $N_{\mathrm{f}} = 2$ the anomalous dimension decreases more slowly with $\beta$. We present our investigations of SU($N$) adjoint QCD in two dimensions with one Majorana fermion on the lattice. We determine the relevant parameter range for the simulations with Wilson fermions and present results for Polyakov loop, chiral condensate, and string tension. In the theory with massive fermions, all observables we checked show qualitative agreement between numerical lattice data and theory, while the massless limit is more subtle since chiral and non-invertible symmetry of the continuum theory are explicitly broken by lattice regularization. In thermal compactification, we observe $N$ perturbative vacua for the holonomy potential at high-$T$ with instanton events connecting them, and a unique vacuum at low-$T$. At finite-$N$, this is a cross-over and it turns to a phase transition at large-$N$ thermodynamic limit. In circle compactification with periodic boundary conditions, we observe a unique center-symmetric minimum at any radius. In continuum, the instantons in the thermal case carry zero modes (for even $N$) and indeed, in the lattice simulations, we observe that chiral condensate is dominated by instanton centers, where zero modes are localized. We present lattice results on the issue of confinement vs. screening in the theory and comment on the roles of chiral symmetry and non-invertible symmetry., Comment: 33 pages, 22 figures

Linear confinement with Casimir scaling of the string tension in confining gauge theories is a consequence of a certain property of the Polyakov loop related to random matrices. This mechanism does not depend on the details of the theories (neither the gauge group nor dimensions) and explains approximate Casimir scaling below string-breaking length. In this paper, we study 3d SU(2) pure Yang-Mills theory numerically and find the same random-matrix behavior for rectangular Wilson loops. We conjecture that this is a universal feature of strongly coupled confining gauge theories., Comment: 23 pages, 12 figures

We present new investigations on the Adjoint Filtering Method (AFM), a proposal for filtering gauge configurations by using adjoint zero modes. This method relies on the existence of the Supersymmetric Zero Mode (SZM), whose density follows the gauge action density for classical configurations. We review how a similar construction on the lattice is implemented based on the overlap operator and test the method against smooth configurations showing a remarkable agreement with the expected densities even when pairs of fractionals instanton/anti-instantons are present and noise is added. Then we explore the application of the method to Monte Carlo generated configurations based on SU(2) gauge group. The tuning of the parameters and quantitative results are explicitly shown for a $T^3\times R$ lattice. We show explicit examples comparing the AFM to the density obtained from the Gradient Flow. The agreement is remarkable for some specific configurations containing fractional instantons with the advantage that the AFM does not modify the underlying structures., Comment: 36 pages, 21 figures

We propose an orbifold lattice formulation of QCD suitable for quantum simulations. We show explicitly how to encode gauge degrees of freedom into qubits using noncompact variables, and how to write down a simple truncated Hamiltonian in the coordinate basis. We show that SU(3) gauge group variables and quarks in the fundamental representation can be implemented straightforwardly on qubits, for arbitrary truncation of the gauge manifold., Comment: 24 pages. v2: Some types were fixed. v3: to appear in JHEP

We report on how adjoint zero modes can be used to filter out the topological structures of gauge configurations from the UV fluctuations. We will use the Adjoint Filtering Method (AFM) which relies on the existence of a particular Supersymmetric Zero Mode (SZM) that follows closely the (anti)self-dual part of the action density. In contrast, it is not guaranteed that summing over the lowest lying modes in the fundamental representation reproduces the topological density. We present preliminary qualitative results on smooth, heated, and Monte-Carlo generated configurations with non-trivial content of fractional instantons. The method is capable of distinguishing the underlying topological structures without significantly modifying the gauge field as opposed to smoothing techniques. We present an evaluation of the glueball spectrum for configurations produced with $N_f=1$ dynamical fermions as a function of the $m_{\rm PCAC}$ mass. We obtained masses of states that fall into the irreducible representations of the octahedral group of rotations in combination with the quantum numbers of charge conjugation $C$ and parity $P$. Due to the low signal to noise ratio, practically, we can only extract masses for the irreducible representations $R^{PC}=$ $A_1^{++}$, $E^{++}$, $T_2^{++}$ as well as $A_1^{-+}$. We make use of the Generalized Eigenvalue Problem (GEVP) with an operator basis consisting only of gluonic operators. Throughout this work we are aiming towards the identification of the effects of light dynamical quarks on the glueball spectrum and how this compares to the statistically more precise spectrum of SU(3) pure gauge theory. We used large gauge ensembles which consist of ${\sim {~\cal O}}(10 {\rm K})$ configurations. We explain the microscopic origin of linear confinement potential with the Casimir scaling in generic confining gauge theories. In the low-temperature regime of confining gauge theories such as QCD, Polyakov lines are slowly varying Haar random modulo exponentially small corrections with respect to the inverse temperature, as shown by one of the authors (M.~H.) and Watanabe. With exact Haar randomness, computation of the two-point correlator of Polyakov loops reduces to the problem of random walk on group manifold. Linear confinement potential with approximate Casimir scaling except at short distances follows naturally from slowly varying Haar randomness. With exponentially small corrections to Haar randomness, string breaking and loss of Casimir scaling at long distance follow. Hence we obtain the Casimir scaling which is only approximate and holds only at intermediate distance, which is precisely needed to explain the results of lattice simulations. For $(1+1)$-dimensional theories, there is a simplification that admits the Casimir scaling at short distances as well., Comment: v1: 20 pages. v2: 23 pages. We extend our analysis of bound states in $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory by the consideration of baryonic operators, which are composed of three gluino fields. The corresponding states are similar to the baryons in QCD, but due to the difference between gluino and quark fields, their properties and the fermion line contractions involved in their correlation functions are different from QCD. In this work, we first explain the derivation of these operators and the contractions needed in numerical calculations of their correlators. In contrast to QCD the correlators contain a spectacle piece, which requires methods for all-to-all propagators. We provide a first estimate of the two-point function and the mass of the lightest baryonic state in $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory.

We review our efforts in investigating gauge theories with fermions in the adjoint representation of the gauge group by means of numerical simulations. These theories have applications in possible extensions of the Standard Model of particle physics, being a core part of supersymmetric gauge theories. Pseudoscalar-pole diagrams are an important component of estimates of the hadronic light-by-light (HLbL) contribution to the muon $g-2$. We report on our computation of the transition form factors $\mathcal{F}_{P \rightarrow \gamma^* \gamma^*}$ for the neutral pseudoscalar mesons $P=\pi^0$ and $\eta$. The calculation is performed using twisted-mass lattice QCD with physical quark masses. On the lattice, we have access to a broad range of (space-like) photon four-momenta and therefore produce form factor data complementary to the experimentally accessible single-virtual direction, which directly leads to an estimate of the pion- and $\eta$-pole components of the muon $g-2$. For the pion, our result for the $g-2$ contribution in the continuum is comparable with previous lattice and data-driven determinations, with combined relative uncertainties below $10\%$. For the $\eta$ meson, we report on a preliminary determination from a single lattice spacing.

Supersymmetry on the lattice is explicitly broken by the gluino mass and lattice artifacts. However, it can be restored in the continuum limit by fine tuning the parameters based on the renormalized Ward identities. On the renormalization step not only the mass but also the renormalization of the supercurrent needs to be addressed. Here we present a lattice investigation to obtain the renormalization factors of the supercurrent for $\mathcal{N}$=1 Super-Yang Mills theory in a gauge invariant renormalization scheme. We also provide the conversion factors which are necessary in order to translate our results to the more standard $\overline{\text{MS}}$ scheme., Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures. We present an update of our ongoing study of the SU(2) gauge theory with one flavor of Dirac fermion in the adjoint representation. Compared to our previous results we now have data at larger lattice volumes, smaller values of the fermion mass, and also larger values of $\beta$. We present data for the spectrum of mesons, baryons, glueballs, and the hybrid fermion-glue state, as well as new estimates of the mass anomalous dimension from both finite-size hyperscaling and the Dirac mode number, and discuss the implications of these data for the presence or otherwise of chiral symmetry breaking in this theory., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures. In this work we present perturbative results for the renormalization of the supercurrent operator, $S_\mu$, in ${\cal N} =1$ Supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory. At the quantum level, this operator mixes with both gauge invariant and noninvariant operators, which have the same global transformation properties. In total, there are 13 linearly independent mixing operators of the same and lower dimensionality. We determine, via lattice perturbation theory, the first two rows of the mixing matrix, which refer to the renormalization of $S_\mu$, and of the gauge invariant mixing operator, $T_\mu$. To extract these mixing coefficients in the ${\overline{\rm MS}}$ renormalization scheme and at one-loop order, we compute the relevant two-point and three-point Green's functions of $S_\mu$ and $T_\mu$ in two regularizations: dimensional and lattice. We test the gauge/gravity duality between the matrix model and type IIA string theory at low temperatures with unprecedented accuracy. To this end, we perform lattice Monte Carlo simulations of the Berenstein-Maldacena-Nastase (BMN) matrix model, which is the one-parameter deformation of the Banks-Fischler-Shenker-Susskind (BFSS) matrix model, taking both the large $N$ and continuum limits. We leverage the fact that sufficiently small flux parameters in the BMN matrix model have a negligible impact on the energy of the system while stabilizing the flat directions so that simulations at smaller $N$ than in the BFSS matrix model are possible. Hence, we can perform a precision measurement of the large $N$ continuum energy at the lowest temperatures to date. The energy is in perfect agreement with supergravity predictions including estimations of $\alpha'$-corrections from previous simulations. At the lowest temperature where we can simulate efficiently ($T=0.25\lambda^{1/3}$, where $\lambda$ is the 't Hooft coupling), the difference in energy to the pure supergravity prediction is less than $10\%$. Furthermore, we can extract the coefficient of the $1/N^4$ corrections at a fixed temperature with good accuracy, which was previously unknown., Comment: Published version. 33 pages, 16 figures. In this work, we study the nonperturbative renormalization of the supercurrent operator in $\mathcal{N} = 1$ Supersymmetric Yang-Mills (SYM) theory, using a gauge-invariant renormalization scheme (GIRS). The proposed prescription addresses successfully the unwanted mixing of the supercurrent with other operators of equal or lower dimension, which respect the same global symmetries. This mixing is introduced by the unavoidable breaking of supersymmetry on the lattice. In GIRS all gauge-noninvariant operators, which mix with the supercurrent, are excluded from the renormalization procedure. The one remaining mixing operator is accessible by numerical simulations. We present results for the renormalization of the supercurrent using a GIRS scheme. We also compute at one-loop order the conversion matrix which relates the nonperturbative renormalization factors in GIRS to the reference scheme $\bar{\rm MS}$., Comment: 17 pages, 6 figures and 1 table

In this work we perform a perturbative study of the Noether supercurrent operator in the context of Supersymmetric ${\cal N}{=}1$ Yang-Mills (SYM) theory on the lattice. The supercurrent mixes with several other operators, some of which are not gauge invariant, having the same quantum numbers. We determine, to one loop order, the renormalization and all corresponding mixing coefficients by computing relevant Green's functions of each one of the mixing operators with external elementary fields. Our calculations are performed both in dimensional and lattice regularization. From the first regularization we obtain the $\bar{MS}$-renormalized Green's functions; comparison of the latter with the corresponding Green's functions in the lattice regularization leads to the extraction of the lattice renormalization factors and mixing coefficients in the $\bar{MS}$ scheme. The lattice calculations are performed to lowest order in the lattice spacing, using Wilson gluons and clover improved gluinos. In this work we investigate the infrared behaviour of a Yang-Mills theory coupled to a massless fermion in the adjoint representation of the gauge group SU(2). This model has many interesting properties, corresponding to the $\mathcal{N}=2$ Super-Yang-Mills theory without scalars and in the recent years there has been an increasing interest toward understanding whether confinement and fermion condensation occur at low energy. We simulate the theory on the lattice close to the massless limit using the overlap discretization of the fermion action, allowing a precise and clean study of the chiral symmetry breaking pattern and of the fermion condensate. We present results for the scale setting, the condensate and the running of the coupling constant through the gradient flow -- all of them pointing to a theory without an infrared fixed point and remaining confined deep in the infrared regime., Comment: 10 pages, 9 figures

We report on our computation of the pion transition form factor ${\cal F}_{P\rightarrow \gamma^*\gamma^*}$ from twisted mass lattice QCD in order to determine the numerically dominant light pseudoscalar pole contribution in the hadronic light-by-light scattering contribution to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon $a_\mu =(g-2)_\mu$. The pion transition form factor is computed directly at the physical point. We present first results from simulations of SU(2) gauge theory with two Dirac fermions in the fundamental representation and one adjoint flavor. We present a determination of the gradient flow scales $w_0$, $\sqrt{t_0}$ and $t_0/w_0$ in isosymmetric QCD, making use of the gauge ensembles produced by the Extended Twisted Mass Collaboration (ETMC) with $N_f=2+1+1$ flavours of Wilson-clover twisted-mass quarks including configurations close to the physical point for all dynamical flavours. The simulations are carried out at three values of the lattice spacing and the scale is set through the PDG value of the pion decay constant, yielding $w_0=0.17383(63)$ fm, $\sqrt{t_0}=0.14436(61)$ fm and $t_0/w_0=0.11969(62)$ fm. $\mathcal{N} = 1$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory describes gluons interacting with gluinos, which are spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ Majorana particles in the adjoint representation of the gauge group. In addition to glueballs and mesonic bound states, the theory contains color neutral bound states of three gluinos, which are analogous to baryons in QCD. We calculate their correlation functions, involving ``sunset diagrams'' and ``spectacle diagrams'', numerically for gauge group SU(2) and present an update on the estimates for the lowest masses., Comment: Proceeding of Science

In this work we study the renormalization of the SUSY Noether current in Supersymmetric $\mathcal{N}$ = 1 Yang-Mills (SYM) theory on the lattice. In particular, we study the mixing of the current with all other compatible operators of dimension 7/2 and 5/2, leading from the lattice-regularized to the $\overline{\rm MS}$-renormalized operator basis. We perform our task in two ways: (a) We compute, in dimensional regularization, the conversion factors relating the $\overline{\rm MS}$ scheme to an intermediate gauge-invariant coordinate-space scheme. In this second scheme, renormalization can be performed via lattice simulations. This could help to investigate the breaking of SUSY on the lattice and strategies towards simulations of supersymmetric QCD. Here we present some preliminary numerical results. Motivated by recent scenarios of exotic infrared behaviour and by earlier lattice findings, we present results for the SU(2) gauge theory with one Dirac flavor in the adjoint representation. This provides a major update on our previous investigation of this theory, including data for four values of the gauge coupling $\beta$, and for smaller masses and larger volumes than previously considered. Results for the particle spectrum, topological observables, and the anomalous dimension from both hyperscaling and the Dirac mode number are presented. At the finest coupling, we observe a mass anomalous dimension of $\gamma_* \gtrsim 0.6$. Our findings are analysed in relation to possible infrared behaviours of the model. We study the confinement/deconfinement transition in the D0-brane matrix model (often called the BFSS matrix model) and its one-parameter deformation (the BMN matrix model) numerically by lattice Monte Carlo simulations. Our results confirm general expectations from the dual string/M-theory picture for strong coupling. In particular, we observe the confined phase in the BFSS matrix model, which is a nontrivial consequence of the M-theory picture. We suggest that these models provide us with an ideal framework to study the Schwarzschild black hole, M-theory, and furthermore, the parameter region of the phase transition between type IIA superstring theory and M-theory. A detailed study of M-theory via lattice Monte Carlo simulations of the D0-brane matrix model might be doable with much smaller computational resources than previously expected., Comment: 50 pages, 33 figures, appendix with 5 sections. We perform the first full decomposition of the pion momentum into its gluon and quark contributions. We employ an ensemble generated by the Extended Twisted Mass Collaboration with $N_f=2 + 1 +1$ Wilson twisted mass clover fermions at maximal twist tuned to reproduce the physical pion mass. We present our results in the $\overline{\mathrm{MS}}$ scheme at $2\gev$. We find $\avgx_{u+d}=0.601(28)$, $\avgx_s=0.059(13)$, $\avgx_c=0.019(05)$, and $\avgx_g=0.52(11)$ for the separate contributions, respectively, whose sum saturates the momentum sum rule.

We present a major update on our investigations of SU(2) gauge theory with one Dirac flavor in the adjoint representation on the lattice. In particular we consider larger volumes, as well as four different values of the gauge coupling. We provide results for the spectrum including gluonic, fermionic, and hybrid observables, Polyakov loops, and the anomalous dimension of the fermionic condensate from the Dirac mode number. These data confirm that the theory is close to the lower boundary of the conformal window for adjoint fermions. We investigate the lattice regularization of $\mathcal{N} = 4$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory, by stochastically computing the eigenvalue mode number of the fermion operator. This provides important insight into the non-perturbative renormalization group flow of the lattice theory, through the definition of a scale-dependent effective mass anomalous dimension. While this anomalous dimension is expected to vanish in the conformal continuum theory, the finite lattice volume and lattice spacing generically lead to non-zero values, which we use to study the approach to the continuum limit. Our numerical results, comparing multiple lattice volumes, 't Hooft couplings, and numbers of colors, confirm convergence towards the expected continuum result, while quantifying the increasing significance of lattice artifacts at larger couplings., Comment: 24 pages, 13 figures

The mass anomalous dimension is determined in SU(2) gauge theory coupled to $N_f$ fermions in the adjoint representation for $N_f = 2$, $3/2$, $1$ and $1/2$, where half-integer flavor numbers correspond to Majorana fermions. The numerical method is based on gradient flow. The results show near-conformal behavior for $N_f = 2$, $3/2$ and $1$. Particular emphasis is placed on $N_f = 2$, which is relevant for a strongly interacting extension of the Standard Model and has been studied in several previous investigations. We check whether the method is able to resolve discrepancies in earlier results for this theory. In this article we summarize our efforts in simulating Yang-Mills theories coupled to matter fields transforming under the fundamental and adjoint representations of the gauge group. In the context of composite Higgs scenarios, gauge theories with mixed representation fields have been suggested to describe the fundamental interactions well beyond the electroweak unification scale, and they are also closely related to supersymmetric QCD. In addition, they are studied as deformations of theories with pure adjoint matter in the context of adiabatic continuity. We provide some first results for bare parameter tuning and interdependence of the two representations. We also investigate how the chiral symmetry breaking or a conformal scenario can be realized and checked in such theories., Comment: 21 pages, 11 Figures

We provide evidence for partial deconfinement -- the deconfinement of a SU($M$) subgroup of the SU($N$) gauge group -- by using lattice Monte Carlo simulations. We take matrix models as concrete examples. By appropriately fixing the gauge, we observe that the $M\times M$ submatrices deconfine. This gives direct evidence for partial deconfinement at strong coupling. We discuss the applications to QCD and holography., Comment: 49 pages, 24 figures, 3 tables. In $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory, regularised on a space-time lattice, in addition to the breaking by the gluino mass term, supersymmetry is broken explicitly by the lattice regulator. In addition to the parameter tuning in the theory, the supersymmetric Ward identities can be used as a tool to investigate lattice artefacts as well as to check whether supersymmetry can be recovered in the chiral and continuum limits. In this paper we present the numerical results of an analysis of the supersymmetric Ward identities for our available gauge ensembles at different values of the inverse gauge coupling $\beta$ and of the hopping parameter $\kappa$. We summarize our investigations of several aspects of $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills (SYM) theory. We present our final results for SU(3) $\mathcal{N}=1$ SYM simulated with Wilson fermions. We also discuss the first test of the simulations of the theory with overlap gluinos. We present a preliminary study of the pion, kaon and D-meson masses and decay constants in isosymmetric QCD, as well as a preliminary result for the light-quark renormalized mass. The analysis is based on the gauge ensembles produced by ETMC with $N_f=2+1+1$ flavours of Wilson-clover twisted mass quarks, spanning a range of lattice spacings from $\sim0.10$ to $0.07$ fm and include configurations at the physical pion point on lattices with linear size up to $L~\sim~5.6$~fm, Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures, 37th International Symposium on Lattice Field Theory - Lattice2019, 16-22 June 2019, Wuhan, China. We compute the renormalization group flow of the mass anomalous dimension in adjoint QCD with $N_{f}=1$, $3/2$, and 2 Dirac fermions, using the gradient flow. Preliminary results are in agreement with at least a near-conformal scenario in all cases. At the largest flavor numbers we obtain the strongest indication for an IR conformal fixed point scenario. Moreover, we provide results for the thermal phase transitions in SU(3) supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory. We study the bosonic matrix model obtained as the high-temperature limit of two-dimensional maximally supersymmetric SU($N$) Yang-Mills theory. So far, no consensus about the order of the deconfinement transition in this theory has been reached and this hinders progress in understanding the nature of the black hole/black string topology change from the gauge/gravity duality perspective. On the one hand, previous works considered the deconfinement transition consistent with two transitions which are of second and third order. On the other hand, evidence for a first order transition was put forward more recently. We perform high-statistics lattice Monte Carlo simulations at large $N$ and small lattice spacing to establish that the transition is really of first order. Our findings flag a warning that the required large-$N$ and continuum limit might not have been reached in earlier publications, and that was the source of the discrepancy. Moreover, our detailed results confirm the existence of a new partially deconfined phase which describes non-uniform black strings via the gauge/gravity duality. The physical particles in supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory (SYM) are bound states of gluons and gluinos. We have determined the masses of the lightest bound states in SU(3) $\mathcal{N}=1$ SYM. Our simulations cover a range of different lattice spacings, which for the first time allows an extrapolation to the continuum limit. Our results show the formation of a supermultiplet of bound states, which provides a clear evidence for unbroken supersymmetry., Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures

The realization of center and chiral symmetries in $\mathcal{N}=1$ super Yang-Mills theory (SYM) is investigated on a four-dimensional Euclidean lattice by means of Monte Carlo methods. At zero temperature this theory is expected to confine external fundamental charges and to have a non-vanishing gaugino condensate, which breaks the non-anomalous Z$_{2\textrm{N}_{c}}$ chiral symmetry. In previous studies at finite temperatures, the phase transitions corresponding to deconfinement and chiral restoration were observed to occur at roughly the same critical temperature for SU(2) gauge group. We find further evidences for this observation from new measurements at smaller lattice spacings using the fermion gradient flow, and we discuss the agreement of our findings with conjectures from superstring theory. The implementation of the gradient flow technique allows us also to estimate, for the first time, the condensate at zero temperatures and zero gaugino mass with Wilson fermions., Comment: 19 pages, 3 figures, corrected figures and extended references

We have calculated the masses of bound states numerically in N = 1 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory with gauge group SU(2). Using the suitably optimised variational method with an operator basis consisting of smeared Wilson loops and mesonic operators, we are able to obtain the masses of the ground states and first excited states in the scalar, pseudoscalar and spin-1/2 sectors. Extrapolated to the continuum limit, the corresponding particles appear to be approximately mass degenerate and to fit into the predicted chiral supermultiplets. The extended operator basis including both glueball-like and mesonic operators leads to improved results compared to earlier studies, and moreover allows us to investigate the mixing content of the physical states, which we compare to predictions in the literature., Comment: 20 pages, 9 figures. v2: small correction of author names and acknowledgments

{We present the results of a numerical investigation of SU(2) gauge theory with $N_f=3/2$ flavours of fermions, corresponding to 3 Majorana fermions, which transform in the adjoint representation of the gauge group. At two values of the gauge coupling, the masses of bound states are considered as a function of the PCAC quark mass. The scaling of bound states masses indicates an infrared conformal behaviour of the theory. In $\mathcal{N}$=1 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory the superpartner of the gluon is the gluino, which is a spin 1/2 Majorana particle in the adjoint representation of the gauge group. Combining three gluinos, it is possible to form colour neutral bound states, analogous to baryons in QCD. The correlation functions of the corresponding baryonic operators contain a contribution represented by a `sunset diagram', and in addition, unlike in QCD, another contribution represented by a `spectacle diagram'. Composite operators of bare fermion fields evolved along a trajectory on field space by means of flow equations are multiplicatively renormalized. Therefore, even in the case of Wilson fermions, the renormalization of expectation values of fermion operators can be drastically simplified on the lattice. We measure the gluino condensate in $\mathcal{N}$=1 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory at non-zero temperatures by means of the gradient flow. The non-vanishing expectation value of the gluino condensate up to a certain critical temperature is a signal of chiral symmetry breaking, in agreement with theoretical conjectures on the vacuum structure of the theory. This talk is an overview of our recent investigations of supersymmetric and near conformal gauge theories. We have studied extensively $\mathcal{N}=1$ super Yang-Mills theory, most recently with the gauge group SU(3). In addition we have investigated theories that show indications for a conformal behavior at an infrared fixed point. We have included a mixed fundamental and adjoint fermion action setup in our studies. This work is a step towards merging the ideas that arise from semi-classical methods in continuum QFT with analytic/numerical lattice field theory. In this context, we consider Yang-Mills theories coupled to fermions in the adjoint representation. These theories have the remarkable property that confinement and discrete chiral symmetry breaking can persist at weak coupling on small (non-thermal) $\mathbb R^3 \times S^1$. This work presents a lattice investigation of Yang-Mills with one adjoint Majorana fermion, $\mathcal N=1$ super Yang-Mills, and opens the prospect to understand a number of non-perturbative phenomena, such as the mechanism of confinement, mass gap, chiral and center symmetry realizations both in lattice and continuum analytically. We study the compactification of this theory on the lattice with periodic and thermal boundary conditions. We provide numerical evidence for the conjectured absence of the phase transitions with periodic boundary conditions for sufficiently light lattice fermions (stability of center-symmetry), suppression of the chiral transition, and also provide a diagnostic for abelian vs. non-abelian confinement, based on per-site Polyakov loop eigenvalue distribution functions. In numerical and perturbative investigations we identify the role of the lattice artefacts that become relevant in the very small radius regime, and resolve some puzzles in the naive comparison between continuum and lattice., Comment: 38 pages, 12 figures
