This article describes the lack of cooperativeness, involvement, responsibility, and creative thinking that has characterized individuals as members of groups in western democracies, and suggests that participation training can help people to both learn better and to learn from and value one another. This monograph aims to: (1) provide the reader with an overview of how Sweden uses adult education to help people to grow and mature; (2) motivate the professional reader to examine further the extensive literature in adult education, and to make a study also in Sweden; and (3) order and present facts learned during a visit to Sweden and state ideas resulting from observation and study. The Indiana Plan for Adult Religious education is a tested framework of action and training within which an effective adult education program can evolve. The plan is intended to help people in the understanding of and service to God. It aims to: stimulate adults to recognize that some of their religious education needs can be met through educational programs; assist lay people in devising and conducting educational programs to meet these needs; and encourage people to use their educational opportunities and talents actively through the church and community. The Indiana Plan develops in any church where the cooperation of the clergyman is enlisted. Groups of 12-15 persons each are trained to become a learning team. Emphasis is placed on training, freedom of expression, active individual participation, sharing in program development, voluntary learning activities, formal and informal procedures, and outward growth. The plan was found to be effective in improving interpersonal understanding and communication. (There is a bibliography and an index.) (PT)

THIS BOOK PRESENTS SOME IDEAS THAT CONSTITUTE A SUPPORTING STRUCTURE FOR AN EFFECTIVE PROGRAM OF ADULT EDUCATION IN A FREE SOCIETY. IT BEGINS WITH AN OVERVIEW OF THE ADULT, HIS SOCIETY, AND ADULT EDUCATION, A DISCUSSION OF GOALS AND STRUCTURE FOR ADULT EDUCATION, AND SPECIFIC MEANINGS OF THE TERM--AS A SYSTEMATICALLY ORGANIZED PROGRAM, AS RANDOM EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING, AND AS A FIELD OF STUDY. THEN FOLLOW TWO CHAPTERS ON SIGNIFICANT PERSONAL AND SOCIAL PROBLEMS WHICH MAY INHIBIT OR MISDIRECT THE LEARNING OF ADULTS. TWELVE CONCEPTS TO IMPLEMENT THE EDUCATION OF ADULTS ARE PRESENTED. A SUMMARY EMPHASIZES THE NECESSITY OF CINTINUOUS LEARNING IN A FREE SOCIETY AND A SELECTED READING LIST AND AN INDEX ARE INCLUDED.
