Search

Phonons in solid-state quantum emitters play a crucial role in their performance as photon sources in quantum technology. For resonant driving, phonons dampen the Rabi oscillations resulting in reduced preparation fidelities. The phonon spectral density, which quantifies the strength of the carrier-phonon interaction, is non-monotonous as a function of energy. As one of the most prominent consequences, this leads to the reappearance of Rabi rotations for increasing pulse power, which was theoretically predicted in Phys. Rev. Lett. 98, 227403 (2007). In this paper we present the experimental demonstration of the reappearance of Rabi rotations.

Quasi-periodic Eruptions (QPEs) are luminous bursts of soft X-rays from the nuclei of galaxies, repeating on timescales of hours to weeks. The mechanism behind these rare systems is uncertain, but most theories involve accretion disks around supermassive black holes (SMBHs), undergoing instabilities or interacting with a stellar object in a close orbit. It has been suggested that this disk could be created when the SMBH disrupts a passing star, implying that many QPEs should be preceded by observable tidal disruption events (TDEs). Two known QPE sources show long-term decays in quiescent luminosity consistent with TDEs, and two observed TDEs have exhibited X-ray flares consistent with individual eruptions. TDEs and QPEs also occur preferentially in similar galaxies. However, no confirmed repeating QPEs have been associated with a spectroscopically confirmed TDE or an optical TDE observed at peak brightness. Here we report the detection of nine X-ray QPEs with a mean recurrence time of approximately 48 hours from AT2019qiz, a nearby and extensively studied optically-selected TDE. We detect and model the X-ray, ultraviolet and optical emission from the accretion disk, and show that an orbiting body colliding with this disk provides a plausible explanation for the QPEs.

Enhanced emission in the months to years preceding explosion has been detected for several core-collapse supernovae (SNe). Though the physical mechanisms driving the emission remain hotly debated, the light curves of detected events show long-lived ($\geq$50 days), plateau-like behavior, suggesting hydrogen recombination may significantly contribute to the total energy budget. The Vera C. Rubin Observatory's Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) will provide a decade-long photometric baseline to search for this emission, both in binned pre-explosion observations after an SN is detected and in single-visit observations prior to the SN explosion. In anticipation of these searches, we simulate a range of eruptive precursor models to core-collapse SNe and forecast the discovery rates of these phenomena in LSST data. We find a detection rate of ~40-130 yr$^{-1}$ for SN IIP/IIL precursors and ~110 yr$^{-1}$ for SN IIn precursors in single-epoch photometry. Considering the first three years of observations with the effects of rolling and observing triplets included, this number grows to a total of 150-400 in binned photometry, with the highest number recovered when binning in 100-day bins for 2020tlf-like precursors and in 20-day bins for other recombination-driven models from the literature. We quantify the impact of using templates contaminated by residual light (from either long-lived or separate precursor emission) on these detection rates, and explore strategies for estimating baseline flux to mitigate these issues. Spectroscopic follow-up of the eruptions preceding core-collapse SNe and detected with LSST will offer important clues to the underlying drivers of terminal-stage mass loss in massive stars., Comment: 20 pages, 12 figures. We present the results from an extensive follow-up campaign of the Tidal Disruption Event (TDE) ASASSN-15oi spanning $\delta t \sim 10 - 3000$ d, offering an unprecedented window into the multiwavelength properties of a TDE during its first $\approx 8$ years of evolution. ASASSN-15oi is one of the few TDEs with strong detections at X-ray, optical/UV, and radio wavelengths and featured two delayed radio flares at $\delta t \sim 180$ d and $\delta t \sim 1400$ d. Our observations at $> 1400$ d reveal an absence of thermal X-rays, a late-time variability in the non-thermal X-ray emission, and sharp declines in the non-thermal X-ray and radio emission at $\delta t \sim 2800$ d and $\sim 3000$ d, respectively. The UV emission shows no significant evolution at $>400$ d and remains above the pre-TDE level. We show that a cooling envelope model can explain the thermal emission consistently across all epochs. We also find that a scenario involving episodic ejection of material due to stream-stream collisions is conducive to explaining the first radio flare. Given the peculiar spectral and temporal evolution of the late-time emission, however, constraining the origins of the second radio flare and the non-thermal X-rays remains challenging. Fast X-ray Transients (FXTs) are a new observational class of phenomena with no clear physical origin. This is at least partially a consequence of limited multi-wavelength follow up of this class of transients in real time. Here we present deep optical ($g-$ and $i-$ band) photometry with Keck, and prompt radio observations with the VLA of FXT 210423 obtained at ${\delta t \approx 14-36}$ days since the X-ray trigger. We use these multi-band observations, combined with publicly available data sets, to constrain the presence and physical properties of on-axis and off-axis relativistic jets such as those that can be launched by neutron-star mergers and tidal disruption events, which are among the proposed theoretical scenarios of FXTs. Considering a wide range of possible redshifts $z\le3.5$, circumstellar medium (CSM) density $n={10^{-6}-10^{-1}\,\rm{cm^{-3}}}$, isotropic-equivalent jet kinetic energy $E_{k,iso}={10^{48}-10^{55}\,\rm{erg}}$, we find that we can rule out wide jets with opening angle ${\theta_{j}=15^{\circ}}$ viewed within ${10^{\circ}}$ off-axis. For more collimated jets (${\theta_{j}=3^{\circ}}$) we can only rule out on-axis (${\theta_{obs}=0^{\circ}}$) orientations. There is a growing number of peculiar events that cannot be assigned to any of the main supernova (SN) classes. SN 1987A and a handful of similar objects, thought to be explosive outcomes of blue supergiant stars, belong to them: while their spectra closely resemble those of H-rich (IIP) SNe, their light-curve (LC) evolution is very different. Here we present the detailed photometric and spectroscopic analysis of SN 2021aatd, a peculiar Type II explosion: while its early-time evolution resembles that of the slowly evolving, double-peaked SN 2020faa (however, at a lower luminosity scale), after $\sim$40 days, its LC shape becomes similar to that of SN 1987A-like explosions. Beyond comparing LCs, color curves, and spectra of SN 2021aatd to that of SNe 2020faa, 1987A, and of other objects, we compare the observed spectra with our own SYN++ models and with the outputs of published radiative transfer models. We also modeled the pseudo-bolometric LCs of SNe 2021aatd and 1987A assuming a two-component (core+shell) ejecta, and involving the rotational energy of a newborn magnetar in addition to radioactive decay. We find that both the photometric and spectroscopic evolution of SN 2021aatd can be well described with the explosion of a $\sim$15 $M_\odot$ blue supergiant star. Nevertheless, SN 2021aatd shows higher temperatures and weaker Na ID and Ba II 6142 A lines than SN 1987A, which is reminiscent of rather to IIP-like atmospheres. With the applied two-component ejecta model (counting with both decay and magnetar energy), we can successfully describe the bolometric LC of SN 2021aatd, including the first $\sim$40-day long phase showing an excess compared to 87A-like SNe but being strikingly similar to that of the long-lived SN 2020faa. We present 1 - 12 GHz Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array observations of 9 off-nuclear persistent radio sources (PRSs) in nearby (z < 0.055) dwarf galaxies, along with high-resolution European very-long baseline interferometry (VLBI) Network (EVN) observations for one of them at 1.7GHz. We explore the plausibility that these PRSs are associated with fast radio burst (FRB) sources by examining their properties, physical sizes, host-normalized offsets, spectral energy distributions (SEDs), radio luminosities, and light curves, and compare them to those of the PRSs associated with FRBs 20121102A and 20190520B, two known active galactic nuclei (AGN), and one likely AGN in our sample with comparable data, as well as other radio transients exhibiting characteristics analogous to FRB-PRSs. We identify a single source in our sample, J1136+2643, as the most promising FRB- PRS, based on its compact physical size and host-normalized offset. We further identify two sources, J0019+1507 and J0909+5955, with physical sizes comparable to FRB-PRSs, but which exhibit large offsets and flat spectral indices potentially indicative of a background AGN origin. We test the viability of neutron star wind nebulae and hypernebulae models for J1136+2643, and find that the physical size, luminosity, and SED of J1136+2643 are broadly consistent with these models. Finally, we discuss the alternative interpretation that the radio sources are instead powered by accreting massive black holes and outline future prospects and follow-up observations for differentiating between these scenarios., Comment: 25 pages, 7 figures, 3 tables

The tidal disruption event (TDE) AT2022cmc represents the fourth known example of a relativistic jet produced by the tidal disruption of a stray star providing a unique probe of the formation and evolution of relativistic jets in otherwise dormant supermassive black holes (SMBHs). Here we present deep, late-time Chandra observations of AT2022cmc extending to $t_{\rm obs} \approx 400$ days after disruption. Our observations reveal a sudden decrease in the X-ray brightness by a factor of $\gtrsim 14$ over a factor of $\approx 2.3$ in time, and a deviation from the earlier power-law decline with a steepening $\alpha \gtrsim 3.2$ ($F_X \propto t^{-\alpha}$), steeper than expected for a jet break, and pointing to the cessation of jet activity at $t_{\rm obs} \approx 215$ days. Such a transition has been observed in two previous TDEs (Swift J1644+57 and Swift J2058+05). From the X-ray luminosity and the timescale of jet shutoff, we parameterize the mass of the SMBH in terms of unknown jet efficiency and accreted mass fraction parameters. Motivated by the disk-jet connection in AGN, we favor black hole masses $\lesssim 10^5 \ \rm M_{\odot}$ (where the jet and disk luminosities are comparable), and disfavor larger black holes (in which extremely powerful jets are required to outshine their accretion disks). We additionally estimate a total accreted mass of $\approx 0.1 \rm \ M_{\odot}$. Applying the same formalism to Swift J1644+57 and Swift J2058+05, we favor comparable black hole masses for these TDEs of $\lesssim$ a few $\times 10^5 \ \rm M_{\odot}$, and suggest that jetted TDEs may preferentially form from lower mass black holes when compared to non-relativistic events, owing to generally lower jet and higher disk efficiencies at higher black hole masses., Comment: Submitted to ApJ; 12 pages, 4 figures

We present a pan-chromatic study of AT2017bcc, a nuclear transient that was discovered in 2017 within the skymap of a reported burst-like gravitational wave candidate, G274296. It was initially classified as a superluminous supernova, and then reclassified as a candidate tidal disruption event. Its optical light curve has since shown ongoing variability with a structure function consistent with that of an active galactic nucleus, however earlier data shows no variability for at least 10 years prior to the outburst in 2017. The spectrum shows complex profiles in the broad Balmer lines: a central component with a broad blue wing, and a boxy component with time-variable blue and red shoulders. The H$\alpha$ emission profile is well modelled using a circular accretion disc component, and a blue-shifted double Gaussian which may indicate a partially obscured outflow. Weak narrow lines, together with the previously flat light curve, suggest that this object represents a dormant galactic nucleus which has recently been re-activated. Our time-series modelling of the Balmer lines suggests that this is connected to a disturbance in the disc morphology, and we speculate this could involve a sudden violent event such as a tidal disruption event involving the central supermassive black hole, though this cannot be confirmed, and given an estimated black hole mass of $\gtrsim10^7-10^8$ M$_\odot$ instabilities in an existing disc may be more likely. Although we find that the redshifts of AT2017bcc ($z=0.13$) and G274296 ($z>0.42$) are inconsistent, this event adds to the growing diversity of both nuclear transients and multi-messenger contaminants., Comment: Submitted to MNRAS

We present the first deep X-ray observations of a luminous FBOT AT2018cow, at $\sim3.7\,\rm{yr}$ since discovery, together with the re-analysis of the observation at $\delta t\sim 220$ d. X-ray emission is significantly detected at a location consistent with AT2018cow. The very soft X-ray spectrum and sustained luminosity are distinct from the spectral and temporal behavior of the LFBOT in the first $\sim100$ d, and would possibly signal the emergence of a new emission component, although a robust association with AT2018cow can only be claimed at $\delta t \sim220$ d, while at $\delta t \sim1350$ d contamination of the host galaxy cannot be excluded. We interpret these findings in the context of the late-time panchromatic emission from AT2018cow, which includes the detection of persistent, slowly-fading UV emission with $\nu L_{\nu}\approx 10^{39}\,\rm{erg\,s^{-1}}$. Similar to previous works, (and in analogy with arguments for Ultra-Luminous X-ray sources --ULXs), these late-time observations are consistent with thin-disks around Intermediate Mass Black Holes (IMBHs, with $M_{\bullet}\approx 10^3-10^4\, \rm{M_{\odot}}$) accreting at sub-Eddington rates. However, differently from previous studies, we find that smaller-mass BHs with $M_{\bullet}\approx 10-100\,\rm{M_{\odot}}$ accreting at $\gtrsim$ the Eddington rate cannot be ruled out, and provide a natural explanation for the inferred compact size ($R_{\rm out} \approx 40\,R_{\odot}$) of the accretion disk years after the optical flare. Most importantly, irrespective of the accretor mass, our study lends support to the hypothesis that LFBOTs are accretion-powered phenomena and that, specifically, LFBOTs constitute electromagnetic manifestations of super-Eddington accreting systems that evolve to $\lesssim$ Eddington over a $\approx 100$ days time scale., Comment: 17 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in ApJL

We present the discovery and extensive follow-up of a remarkable fast-evolving optical transient, AT2022aedm, detected by the Asteroid Terrestrial impact Last Alert Survey (ATLAS). AT2022aedm exhibited a rise time of $9\pm1$ days in the ATLAS $o$-band, reaching a luminous peak with $M_g\approx-22$ mag. It faded by 2 magnitudes in $g$-band during the next 15 days. These timescales are consistent with other rapidly evolving transients, though the luminosity is extreme. Most surprisingly, the host galaxy is a massive elliptical with negligible current star formation. X-ray and radio observations rule out a relativistic AT2018cow-like explosion. A spectrum in the first few days after explosion showed short-lived He II emission resembling young core-collapse supernovae, but obvious broad supernova features never developed; later spectra showed only a fast-cooling continuum and narrow, blue-shifted absorption lines, possibly arising in a wind with $v\approx2700$ km s$^{-1}$. We identify two further transients in the literature (Dougie in particular, as well as AT2020bot) that share similarities in their luminosities, timescales, colour evolution and largely featureless spectra, and propose that these may constitute a new class of transients: luminous fast-coolers (LFCs). All three events occurred in passive galaxies at offsets of $\sim4-10$ kpc from the nucleus, posing a challenge for progenitor models involving massive stars or massive black holes. The light curves and spectra appear to be consistent with shock breakout emission, though usually this mechanism is associated with core-collapse supernovae. We present the results from a multi-year radio campaign of the superluminous supernova (SLSN) 2017ens, which yielded the earliest radio detection of a SLSN to date at the age of $\sim$3.3 years after explosion. SN2017ens was not detected at radio frequencies in the first $\sim$300\,d of evolution but reached $L_{\nu}\approx 10^{28}\,\rm{erg\,s^{-1}\,cm^{-2}}$ at $\nu\sim 6$ GHz, $\sim1250$ days post-explosion. Interpreting the radio observations in the context of synchrotron radiation from the supernova shock interaction with the circumstellar medium (CSM), we infer an effective mass-loss rate of $\approx 10^{-4}\,\rm{M_{\odot}yr^{-1}}$ at $r\sim 10^{17}$ cm from the explosion's site, for a wind speed of $v_w=50-60\,\rm{km\,s^{-1}}$ measured from optical spectra. These findings are consistent with the spectroscopic metamorphosis of SN2017ens from hydrogen-poor to hydrogen-rich $\sim190$ d after explosion reported by Chen et al., 2018. SN2017ens is thus an addition to the sample of hydrogen-poor massive progenitors that explode shortly after having lost their hydrogen envelope. The inferred circumstellar densities, implying a CSM mass up to $\sim0.5\,\rm{M_{\odot}}$, and low velocity of the ejection point at binary interactions (in the form of common envelope evolution and subsequent envelope ejection) playing a role in shaping the evolution of the stellar progenitors of SLSNe in the $\lesssim 500$ yr preceding core collapse., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures, 1 table

We present the X-ray monitoring campaign of AT2022tsd in the time range $\delta t_{rest} = 23 - 116$ d rest-frame since discovery. With an initial 0.3-10 keV X-ray luminosity of $L_x \approx 10^{44}$ erg s$^{-1}$ at $\delta t_{rest}\approx$ 23 d, AT2022tsd is the most luminous FBOT to date and rivals even the most luminous GRBs. We find no statistical evidence for spectral evolution. The average X-ray spectrum is well described by an absorbed simple power-law spectral model with best-fitting photon index $\Gamma = 1.89 ^{+0.09}_{-0.08}$ and marginal evidence at the 3$\sigma$ confidence level for intrinsic absorption $NH_{int}\approx 4\times10^{19}$ cm$^{-2}$. The X-ray light-curve behavior can be either interpreted as a power-law decay $L_x\propto t^{\alpha}$ with $\alpha\approx -2$ and superimposed X-ray variability, or as a broken power-law with a steeper post-break decay as observed in other FBOTs such as AT2018cow. A tidal disruption event (TDE) occurs when a star is destroyed by a supermassive black hole. Broadband radio spectral observations of TDEs trace the emission from any outflows or jets that are ejected from the vicinity of the supermassive black hole. However, radio detections of TDEs are rare, with less than 20 published to date, and only 11 with multi-epoch broadband coverage. Here we present the radio detection of the TDE AT2020vwl and our subsequent radio monitoring campaign of the outflow that was produced, spanning 1.5 years post-optical flare. We tracked the outflow evolution as it expanded between $10^{16}$ cm to $10^{17}$ cm from the supermassive black hole, deducing it was non-relativistic and launched quasi-simultaneously with the initial optical detection through modelling the evolving synchrotron spectra of the event. We deduce that the outflow is likely to have been launched by material ejected from stream-stream collisions (more likely), the unbound debris stream, or an accretion-induced wind or jet from the supermassive black hole (less likely). AT2020vwl joins a growing number of TDEs with well-characterised prompt radio emission, with future timely radio observations of TDEs required to fully understand the mechanism that produces this type of radio emission in TDEs., Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

There is growing evidence that Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) may originate from multiple explosion channels. Previous studies have indicated that the ejecta velocity of SNe Ia is one powerful tool to discriminate between different channels. In this work, we study ~400 confirmed SNe Ia discovered by the Pan-STARRS1 Medium Deep Survey (PS1-MDS), and obtain a sample of ~50 SNe Ia that have near-peak Si II 6355 velocity (Vsi) measurements. We investigate the relationships between Vsi and various parameters, including SN light-curve width, color, host-galaxy properties, and redshift. No significant trends are identified between Vsi and light-curve parameters. Regarding the host-galaxy properties, we see a significant trend that high-velocity (HV) SNe Ia (Vsi > 12000 km/s) tend to reside in more massive galaxies compared to normal-velocity (NV) SNe Ia (Vsi < 12000 km/s) when combining both the PS1-MDS dataset and those from previous low-z studies. While we do not see a significant trend between Vsi and redshift, HV SNe Ia appear to be more prevalent in low-z samples than in high-z samples. We discuss several possibilities that could potentially contribute to this trend. Understanding generation and mitigation of runaway electrons in disruptions is important for the safe operation of future tokamaks. In this paper we investigate runaway dynamics in reactor-scale spherical tokamaks. We study both the severity of runaway generation during unmitigated disruptions, as well as the effect that typical mitigation schemes based on massive material injection have on runaway production. The study is conducted using the numerical framework DREAM (Disruption Runaway Electron Analysis Model). We find that, in many cases, mitigation strategies are necessary to prevent the runaway current from reaching multi-megaampere levels. Our results indicate that with a suitably chosen deuterium-neon mixture for mitigation, it is possible to achieve a tolerable runaway current and ohmic current evolution. With such parameters, however, the majority of the thermal energy loss happens through radial transport rather than radiation, which poses a risk of unacceptable localised heat loads., Comment: 19 pages, 7 figures

Here, we report the discovery of a kilonova associated with the nearby (350 Mpc) minute-duration GRB 211211A. In tandem with deep optical limits that rule out the presence of an accompanying supernova to $M_I > -13$ mag at 17.7 days post-burst, the identification of a kilonova confirms that this burst's progenitor was a compact object merger. While the spectrally softer tail in GRB 211211A's gamma-ray light curve is reminiscent of previous extended emission short GRBs (EE-SGRBs), its prompt, bright spikes last $\gtrsim 12$ s, separating it from past EE-SGRBs. GRB 211211A's kilonova has a similar luminosity, duration and color to AT2017gfo, the kilonova found in association with the gravitational wave (GW)-detected binary neutron star (BNS) merger GW170817. We find that the merger ejected $\approx 0.04 M_{\odot}$ of r-process-rich material, and is consistent with the merger of two neutron stars (NSs) with masses close to the canonical $1.4 M_{\odot}$. This discovery implies that GRBs with long, complex light curves can be spawned from compact object merger events and that a population of kilonovae following GRBs with durations $\gg 2$ s should be accounted for in calculations of the NS merger r-process contribution and rate. At 350 Mpc, the current network of GW interferometers at design sensitivity would have detected the merger precipitating GRB 211211A, had it been operating at the time of the event. Tokamak start-up is characterized by low electron densities and strong electric fields, in order to quickly raise the plasma current and temperature, allowing the plasma to fully ionize and magnetic flux surfaces to form. Such conditions are ideal for the formation of superthermal electrons, which may reduce the efficiency of ohmic heating and prevent the formation of a healthy thermal fusion plasma. This is of particular concern in ITER where engineering limitations put restrictions on the allowable electric fields and limit the prefill densities during start-up. In this study, we present a new 0D burn-through simulation tool called STREAM (STart-up Runaway Electron Analysis Model), which self-consistently evolves the plasma density, temperature and electric field, while accounting for the generation and loss of relativistic runaway electrons. After verifying the burn-through model, we investigate conditions under which runaway electrons can form during tokamak start-up as well as their effects on the plasma initiation. We find that Dreicer generation plays a crucial role in determining whether a discharge becomes runaway-dominated or not, and that a large number of runaway electrons could limit the ohmic heating of the plasma, thus preventing successful burn-through or further ramp-up of the plasma current. The runaway generation can be suppressed by raising the density via gas fuelling, but only if done sufficiently early. Otherwise a large runaway seed may have already been built up, which can avalanche even at relatively low electric fields and high densities., Comment: 23 pages, 8 figures

The workshop Dawn VI: Next Generation Observatories took place online over three days, 5-7 October, 2021. More than 200 physicists and astronomers attended to contribute to, and learn from, a discussion of next-generation ground-based gravitational-wave detectors. The program was centered on the next generation of ground-based gravitational-wave observatories and their synergy with the greater landscape of scientific observatories of the 2030s. Cosmic Explorer (CE), a concept developed with US National Science Foundation support, was a particular focus; Einstein Telescope (ET), the European next generation concept, is an important complement and partner in forming a network. The concluding summary of the meeting expressed the sentiment that the observational science accessible to CE and ET, also in combination with data from other non-GW observatories, will stimulate a very broad community of analysts and yield insights which are exciting given the access to GWs from the entire universe. The need, and desire, for closer collaboration between ET and CE was expressed; a three-detector network is optimal for delivering much of the science. The science opportunities afforded by CE and ET are broad and compelling, impacting a wide range of disciplines in physics and high energy astrophysics. There was a consensus that CE is a concept that can deliver the promised science. A strong endorsement of Cosmic Explorer, as described in the CE Horizon Study, is a primary outcome of DAWN VI., Comment: Proceedings of the Dawn VI workshop

SN 2018hti was a very nearby (z=0.0614) superluminous supernova with an exceedingly bright absolute magnitude of -21.7 mag in r-band at maximum. The densely sampled pre-maximum light curves of SN 2018hti show a slow luminosity evolution and constrain the rise time to ~50 rest-frame days. We fitted synthetic light curves to the photometry to infer the physical parameters of the explosion of SN 2018hti for both the magnetar and the CSM-interaction scenarios. We conclude that one of two mechanisms could be powering the luminosity of SN 2018hti; interaction with ~10 Msun of circumstellar material or a magnetar with a magnetic field of B_p~1.3e13 G and initial period of P_spin~1.8 ms. The Gamow Explorer will use Gamma Ray Bursts (GRBs) to: 1) probe the high redshift universe (z > 6) when the first stars were born, galaxies formed and Hydrogen was reionized; and 2) enable multi-messenger astrophysics by rapidly identifying Electro-Magnetic (IR/Optical/X-ray) counterparts to Gravitational Wave (GW) events. GRBs have been detected out to z ~ 9 and their afterglows are a bright beacon lasting a few days that can be used to observe the spectral fingerprints of the host galaxy and intergalactic medium to map the period of reionization and early metal enrichment. Gamow Explorer is optimized to quickly identify high-z events to trigger follow-up observations with JWST and large ground-based telescopes. A wide field of view Lobster Eye X-ray Telescope (LEXT) will search for GRBs and locate them with arc-minute precision. When a GRB is detected, the rapidly slewing spacecraft will point the 5 photometric channel Photo-z Infra-Red Telescope (PIRT) to identify high redshift (z > 6) long GRBs within 100s and send an alert within 1000s of the GRB trigger. An L2 orbit provides > 95% observing efficiency with pointing optimized for follow up by the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) and ground observatories. The predicted Gamow Explorer high-z rate is >10 times that of the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory. The instrument and mission capabilities also enable rapid identification of short GRBs and their afterglows associated with GW events. The discovery of the electromagnetic counterpart to the binary neutron star merger GW170817 has opened the era of gravitational-wave multi-messenger astronomy. Rapid identification of the optical/infrared kilonova enabled a precise localization of the source, which paved the way to deep multi-wavelength follow-up and its myriad of related science results. Fully exploiting this new territory of exploration requires the acquisition of electromagnetic data from samples of neutron star mergers and other gravitational wave sources. After GW170817, the frontier is now to map the diversity of kilonova properties and provide more stringent constraints on the Hubble constant, and enable new tests of fundamental physics. The Vera C. Rubin Observatory's Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) can play a key role in this field in the 2020s, when an improved network of gravitational-wave detectors is expected to reach a sensitivity that will enable the discovery of a high rate of merger events involving neutron stars (about tens per year) out to distances of several hundred Mpc. We present deep X-ray and radio observations of the Fast Blue Optical Transient (FBOT) AT2020xnd/ZTF20acigmel at $z=0.2433$ from $13$d to $269$d after explosion. AT2020xnd belongs to the category of optically luminous FBOTs with similarities to the archetypal event AT2018cow. AT2020xnd shows luminous radio emission reaching $L_{\nu}\approx8\times10^{29}$ergs$^{-1}$Hz$^{-1}$ at 20GHz and $75$d post explosion, accompanied by luminous and rapidly fading soft X-ray emission peaking at $L_{X}\approx6\times10^{42}$ergs$^{-1}$. Interpreting the radio emission in the context of synchrotron radiation from the explosion's shock interaction with the environment we find that AT2020xnd launched a high-velocity outflow ($v\sim$0.1-0.2$c$) propagating into a dense circumstellar medium (effective $\dot M\approx10^{-3}M_{\rm{sol}}$yr$^{-1}$ for an assumed wind velocity of $v_w=1000$kms$^{-1}$). Similar to AT2018cow, the detected X-ray emission is in excess compared to the extrapolated synchrotron spectrum and constitutes a different emission component, possibly powered by accretion onto a newly formed black hole or neutron star. These properties make AT2020xnd a high-redshift analog to AT2018cow, and establish AT2020xnd as the fourth member of the class of optically-luminous FBOTs with luminous multi-wavelength counterparts., Comment: 21 pages, 6 figures, 6 tables. The next generation of wide-field cosmic microwave background (CMB) surveys are uniquely poised to open a new window for time-domain astronomy in the millimeter band. Here we explore the discovery phase space for extragalactic transients with near-term and future CMB experiments to characterize the expected population. We use existing millimeter-band light curves of known transients (gamma-ray bursts, tidal disruption events, fast blue optical transients, neutron star mergers) and theoretical models, in conjunction with known and estimated volumetric rates. Using Monte Carlo simulations of various CMB survey designs (area, cadence, depth, duration) we estimate the detection rates and the resulting light curve characteristics. We find that existing and near-term surveys will find tens to hundreds of long-duration gamma-ray bursts (LGRBs), driven primarily by detections of the reverse shock emission, and including off-axis LGRBs. Next-generation experiments (CMB-S4, CMB-HD) will find tens of fast blue optical transients (FBOTs) in the nearby universe and will detect a few tidal disruption events. CMB-HD will additionally detect a small number of short gamma-ray bursts, where these will be discovered within the detection volume of next generation gravitational wave experiments like Cosmic Explorer., Comment: 24 pages, 6 figures; accepted to ApJ

For the first $\sim3$ years after the binary neutron star merger event GW 170817 the radio and X-ray radiation has been dominated by emission from a structured relativistic off-axis jet propagating into a low-density medium with n $< 0.01\,\rm{cm^{-3}}$. We report on observational evidence for an excess of X-ray emission at $\delta t>900$ days after the merger. With $L_x\approx5\times 10^{38}\,\rm{erg\,s^{-1}}$ at 1234 days, the recently detected X-ray emission represents a $\ge 3.2\,\sigma$ (Gaussian equivalent) deviation from the universal post jet-break model that best fits the multi-wavelength afterglow at earlier times. In the context of JetFit afterglow models, current data represent a departure with statistical significance $\ge 3.1\,\sigma$, depending on the fireball collimation, with the most realistic models showing excesses at the level of $\ge 3.7\,\sigma$. A lack of detectable 3 GHz radio emission suggests a harder broad-band spectrum than the jet afterglow. These properties are consistent with the emergence of a new emission component such as synchrotron radiation from a mildly relativistic shock generated by the expanding merger ejecta, i.e. a kilonova afterglow. In this context, we present a set of ab-initio numerical-relativity BNS merger simulations that show that an X-ray excess supports the presence of a high-velocity tail in the merger ejecta, and argues against the prompt collapse of the merger remnant into a black hole. Radiation from accretion processes on the compact-object remnant represents a viable alternative. We present detailed radio observations of the tidal disruption event (TDE) AT2019dsg, obtained with the Very Large Array (VLA) and the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), and spanning $55-560$ days post-disruption. We find that the peak brightness of the radio emission increases until ~200 days and subsequently begins to decrease steadily. Using the standard equipartition analysis, including the effects of synchrotron cooling as determined by the joint VLA-ALMA spectral energy distributions, we find that the outflow powering the radio emission is in roughly free expansion with a velocity of $\approx 0.07c$, while its kinetic energy increases by a factor of about 5 from 55 to 200 days and plateaus at $\approx 5\times 10^{48}$ erg thereafter. The ambient density traced by the outflow declines as $\approx R^{-1.6}$ on a scale of $\approx (1-4)\times 10^{16}$ cm ($\approx 6300-25000$ $R_s$), followed by a steeper decline to $\approx 6\times 10^{16}$ cm ($\approx 37500$ $R_s$). Allowing for a collimated geometry, we find that to reach even mildly relativistic velocities ($\Gamma=2$) the outflow requires an opening angle of $\theta_j\approx 2^\circ$, which is narrow even by the standards of GRB jets; a truly relativistic outflow requires an unphysically narrow jet. The outflow velocity and kinetic energy in AT2019dsg are typical of previous non-relativistic TDEs, and comparable to those from Type Ib/c supernovae, raising doubts about the claimed association with a high-energy neutrino event., Comment: Accepted to the Astrophysical Journal

GW190814 was a compact object binary coalescence detected in gravitational waves by Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo that garnered exceptional community interest due to its excellent localization and the uncertain nature of the binary's lighter-mass component (either the heaviest known neutron star, or the lightest known black hole). Despite extensive follow up observations, no electromagnetic counterpart has been identified. Here we present new radio observations of 75 galaxies within the localization volume at $\Delta t\approx 35-266$ days post-merger. Our observations cover $\sim32$% of the total stellar luminosity in the final localization volume and extend to later timescales than previously-reported searches, allowing us to place the deepest constraints to date on the existence of a radio afterglow from a highly off-axis relativistic jet launched during the merger (assuming that the merger occurred within the observed area). For a viewing angle of $\sim46^{\circ}$ (the best-fit binary inclination derived from the gravitational wave signal) and assumed electron and magnetic field energy fractions of $\epsilon_e=0.1$ and $\epsilon_B=0.01$, we can rule out a typical short gamma-ray burst-like Gaussian jet with isotropic-equivalent kinetic energy $2\times10^{51}$ erg propagating into a constant density medium $n\gtrsim0.01$ cm$^{-3}$. These are the first limits resulting from a galaxy-targeted search for a radio counterpart to a gravitational wave event, and we discuss the challenges, and possible advantages, of applying similar search strategies to future events using current and upcoming radio facilities., Comment: Accepted to ApJ; text and figures updated to match accepted version. 20 pages, 6 figures, 1 table

The discovery of GW170817 and GRB 170817A in tandem with AT 2017gfo cemented the connection between neutron star mergers, short gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), and kilonovae. To investigate short GRB observations in the context of diverse kilonova behavior, we present a comprehensive optical and near-infrared (NIR) catalog of 85 bursts discovered over 2005-2020 on timescales of $\lesssim12$ days. The sample includes previously unpublished observations of 23 bursts, and encompasses both detections and deep upper limits. We identify 11.8% and 15.3% of short GRBs in our catalog with upper limits that probe luminosities lower than those of AT 2017gfo and a fiducial NSBH kilonovae model (for pole-on orientations), respectively. We quantify the ejecta masses allowed by the deepest limits in our catalog, constraining blue and `extremely blue' kilonova components of 14.1% of bursts to $M_{\rm ej}\lesssim0.01-0.1 M_{\odot}$. The sample of short GRBs is not particularly constraining for red kilonova components. Motivated by the large catalog as well as model predictions of diverse kilonova behavior, we investigate modified search strategies for future follow-up to short GRBs. We find that ground-based optical and NIR observations on timescales of $\gtrsim 2$ days can play a significant role in constraining more diverse outcomes. We expect future short GRB follow up efforts, such as from the {\it James Webb Space Telescope}, to expand the reach of kilonova detectability to redshifts of $z\approx 1$., Comment: 32 pages, 7 figures, 2 tables. We present a re-analysis of the Swift Burst Alert Telescope (BAT) data around the radio detection of FRB 131104. Possible evidence of a gamma-ray counterpart was presented by DeLaunay et al. However, based on our analysis using all the available BAT data, no significant emission is found in either the temporal or the image domain. We place a 5~sigma fluence upper limit of 3.3 $\times$ 10$^{-6}$ erg cm$^{-2}$ and 2.7 $\times$ 10$^{-6}$ erg cm$^{-2}$ (15-150 keV) with an integration time of 300 s assuming a simple power-law spectrum with photon index of -1.2 and -2.0, respectively. Our result does not support the association of this FRB with a high-energy counterpart, in agreement with growing observational evidence that most FRBs are not associated to catastrophic events such as gamma-ray bursts., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We present the largest and deepest late-time radio and millimeter survey to date of superluminous supernovae (SLSNe) and long duration gamma-ray bursts (LGRBs) to search for associated non-thermal synchrotron emission. Using the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) and the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), we observed 43 sources at 6 and 100 GHz on a timescale of $\sim 1 - 19$ yr post-explosion. We do not detect radio/mm emission from any of the sources, with the exception of a 6 GHz detection of PTF10hgi (Eftekhari et al. 2019), as well as the detection of 6 GHz emission near the location of the SLSN PTF12dam, which we associate with its host galaxy. We use our data to place constraints on central engine emission due to magnetar wind nebulae and off-axis relativistic jets. We also explore non-relativistic emission from the SN ejecta, and place constraints on obscured star formation in the host galaxies. In addition, we conduct a search for fast radio bursts (FRBs) from some of the sources using VLA Phased-Array observations; no FRBs are detected to a limit of $16$ mJy ($7\sigma$; 10 ms duration) in about 40 min on source per event. A comparison to theoretical models suggests that continued radio monitoring may lead to detections of persistent radio emission on timescales of $\gtrsim {\rm decade}$., Comment: 30 pages; 12 figures; accepted to ApJ

The lack of available table-top extreme ultraviolet (XUV) sources with high enough fluxes and coherence properties have limited the availability of nonlinear XUV and x-ray spectroscopies to free electron lasers (FEL). Here, we demonstrate second harmonic generation (SHG) on a table-top XUV source for the first time by observing SHG at the Ti M2,3-edge with a high harmonic seeded soft x-ray laser (HHG-SXRL) [1,2]. Further, this experiment represents the first SHG experiment in the XUV. First-principles electronic structure calculations are used to confirm the surface specificity and resonant enhancement of the SHG signal. The realization of XUV-SHG on a table-top source with femtosecond temporal resolution opens up tremendous opportunities for the study of element-specific dynamics in multi-component systems where surface, interfacial, and bulk-phase asymmetries play a driving role in smaller-scale labs as opposed to FELs., Comment: 16 pages, 3 main text figures, 1 supplementary table, 6 supplementary figures

We present the discovery of the radio afterglow and near-infrared (NIR) counterpart of the Swift short GRB 200522A, located at a small projected offset of $\approx 1$ kpc from the center of a young, star-forming host galaxy at $z=0.5536$. The radio and X-ray luminosities of the afterglow are consistent with those of on-axis cosmological short GRBs. The NIR counterpart, revealed by our HST observations at a rest-frame time of $\approx2.3$ days, has a luminosity of $\approx (1.3-1.7) \times 10^{42}$ erg s$^{-1}$. This is substantially lower than on-axis short GRB afterglow detections, but is a factor of $\approx 8$-$17$ more luminous than the kilonova of GW170817, and significantly more luminous than any kilonova candidate for which comparable observations exist. The combination of the counterpart's color ($i-y = -0.08\pm 0.21$; rest-frame) and luminosity cannot be explained by standard radioactive heating alone. We present two scenarios to interpret the broad-band behavior of GRB 200522A: a synchrotron forward shock with a luminous kilonova (potentially boosted by magnetar energy deposition), or forward and reverse shocks from a $\approx14^{\circ}$, relativistic ($\Gamma_0 \gtrsim 80$) jet. Models which include a combination of enhanced radioactive heating rates, low-lanthanide mass fractions, or additional sources of heating from late-time central engine activity may provide viable alternate explanations. If a stable magnetar was indeed produced in GRB 200522A, we predict that late-time radio emission will be detectable starting $\approx 0.3$-$6$ years after the burst for a deposited energy of $\approx 10^{53}$ erg. Counterparts of similar luminosity to GRB 200522A associated with gravitational wave events will be detectable with current optical searches to $\approx\!250$ Mpc., Comment: 33 pages, 13 figures, 5 tables. We present the discovery of the optical afterglow and host galaxy of the {\it Swift} short-duration gamma-ray burst, GRB\,181123B. Observations with Gemini-North starting at $\approx 9.1$~hr after the burst reveal a faint optical afterglow with $i\approx25.1$~mag, at an angular offset of 0.59 $\pm$ 0.16$''$ from its host galaxy. Using $grizYJHK$ observations, we measure a photometric redshift of the host galaxy of $z = 1.77^{+0.30}_{-0.17}$. From a combination of Gemini and Keck spectroscopy of the host galaxy spanning 4500-18000~\AA , we detect a single emission line at 13390~\AA, inferred as H$\beta$ at $z = 1.754 \pm 0.001$ and corroborating the photometric redshift. The host galaxy properties of GRB\,181123B are typical to those of other SGRB hosts, with an inferred stellar mass of $\approx 1.7 \times 10^{10}\,M_{\odot}$, mass-weighted age of $\approx 0.9$~Gyr and optical luminosity of $\approx 0.9L^{*}$. At $z=1.754$, GRB\,181123B is the most distant secure SGRB with an optical afterglow detection, and one of only three at $z>1.5$. Motivated by a growing number of high-$z$ SGRBs, we explore the effects of a missing $z>1.5$ SGRB population among the current {\it Swift} sample on delay time distribution models. We find that log-normal models with mean delay times of $\approx 4-6$~Gyr are consistent with the observed distribution, but can be ruled out to $95\%$ confidence with an additional $\approx1-5$~{\it Swift} SGRBs recovered at $z>1.5$. In contrast, power-law models with $\propto$ $t^{-1}$ are consistent with the redshift distribution and can accommodate up to $\approx30$ SGRBs at these redshifts. Under this model, we predict that $\approx 1/3$ of the current {\it Swift} population of SGRBs is at $z>1$. The future discovery or recovery of existing high-$z$ SGRBs will provide significant discriminating power on their delay time distributions, and thus their formation channels.

At 66 Mpc, AT2019qiz is the closest optical tidal disruption event (TDE) to date, with a luminosity intermediate between the bulk of the population and iPTF16fnl. Its proximity allowed a very early detection and triggering of multiwavelength and spectroscopic follow-up well before maximum light. The velocity dispersion of the host galaxy and fits to the TDE light curve indicate a black hole mass $\approx 10^6$ M$_\odot$, disrupting a star of $\approx 1$ M$_\odot$. Comprehensive UV, optical and X-ray data shows that the early optical emission is dominated by an outflow, with a luminosity evolution $L \propto t^2$, consistent with a photosphere expanding at constant velocity ($\gtrsim 2000$ km s$^{-1}$), and a line-forming region producing initially blueshifted H and He II profiles with $v=3000-10000$ km s$^{-1}$. The fastest optical ejecta approach the velocity inferred from radio detections (modelled in a forthcoming companion paper from K.~D.~Alexander et al.), thus the same outflow may be responsible for both the fast optical rise and the radio emission -- the first time this connection has been observed in a TDE. The light curve rise begins $29 \pm 2$ days before maximum light, peaking when the photosphere reaches the radius where optical photons can escape. The photosphere then undergoes a sudden transition, first cooling at constant radius then contracting at constant temperature. At the same time, the blueshifts disappear from the spectrum and Bowen fluorescence lines (N III) become prominent, implying a source of far-UV photons, while the X-ray light curve peaks at $\approx 10^{41}$ erg s$^{-1}$. Assuming that these X-rays are from prompt accretion, the size and mass of the outflow are consistent with the reprocessing layer needed to explain the large optical to X-ray ratio in this and other optical TDEs, possibly favouring accretion-powered over collision-powered outflow models., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present results from spectroscopic observations of AT 2018hyz, a transient discovered by the ASAS-SN survey at an absolute magnitude of $M_V\sim -20.2$ mag, in the nucleus of a quiescent galaxy with strong Balmer absorption lines. AT 2018hyz shows a blue spectral continuum and broad emission lines, consistent with previous TDE candidates. High cadence follow-up spectra show broad Balmer lines and He I in early spectra, with He II making an appearance after $\sim70-100$ days. The Balmer lines evolve from a smooth broad profile, through a boxy, asymmetric double-peaked phase consistent with accretion disc emission, and back to smooth at late times. The Balmer lines are unlike typical AGN in that they show a flat Balmer decrement (H$\alpha$/H$\beta\sim1.5$), suggesting the lines are collisionally excited rather than being produced via photo-ionisation. The flat Balmer decrement together with the complex profiles suggest that the emission lines originate in a disc chromosphere, analogous to those seen in cataclysmic variables. The low optical depth of material due to a possible partial disruption may be what allows us to observe these double-peaked, collisionally excited lines. Gravitational wave (GW) events detectable by LIGO and Virgo have several possible progenitors, including black hole mergers, neutron star mergers, black hole--neutron star mergers, supernovae, and cosmic string cusps. A subset of GW events are expected to produce electromagnetic (EM) emission that, once detected, will provide complementary information about their astrophysical context. To that end, the LIGO--Virgo Collaboration (LVC) sends GW candidate alerts to the astronomical community so that searches for their EM counterparts can be pursued. The DESGW group, consisting of members of the Dark Energy Survey (DES), the LVC, and other members of the astronomical community, uses the Dark Energy Camera (DECam) to perform a search and discovery program for optical signatures of LVC GW events. DESGW aims to use a sample of GW events as standard sirens for cosmology. Due to the short decay timescale of the expected EM counterparts and the need to quickly eliminate survey areas with no counterpart candidates, it is critical to complete the initial analysis of each night's images as quickly as possible. We discuss our search area determination, imaging pipeline, and candidate selection processes. The discovery of a persistent radio source coincident with the first repeating fast radio burst, FRB 121102, and offset from the center of its dwarf host galaxy has been used as evidence for a link with young millisecond magnetars born in superluminous supernovae (SLSNe) or long-duration gamma-ray bursts (LGRBs). A prediction of this scenario is that compact radio sources offset from the centers of dwarf galaxies may serve as signposts for at least some FRBs. Recently, Reines et al. 2019 presented the discovery of 20 such radio sources in nearby ($z\lesssim 0.055$) dwarf galaxies, and argued that these cannot be explained by emission from HII regions, normal supernova remnants, or normal radio supernovae. Instead, they attribute the emission to accreting wandering massive black holes. Here, we explore the alternative possibility that these sources are analogs of FRB 121102. We compare their properties -- radio luminosities, spectral energy distributions, light curves, ratios of radio-to-optical flux, and spatial offsets -- to FRB 121102, a few other well-localized FRBs, and potentially related systems, and find that these are all consistent as arising from the same population. We further compare their properties to the magnetar nebula model used to explain FRB 121102, as well as to theoretical off-axis LGRB light curves, and find overall consistency. Finally, we find a consistent occurrence rate relative to repeating FRBs and LGRBs. We present Chandra and VLA observations of GW170817 at ~521-743 days post merger, and a homogeneous analysis of the entire Chandra data set. We find that the late-time non-thermal emission follows the expected evolution from an off-axis relativistic jet, with a steep temporal decay $F_{\nu}\propto t^{-1.95\pm0.15}$ and a simple power-law spectrum $F_{\nu}\propto \nu^{-0.575\pm0.007}$. We present a new method to constrain the merger environment density based on diffuse X-ray emission from hot plasma in the host galaxy and we find $n\le 9.6 \times 10^{-3}\,\rm{cm^{-3}}$. This measurement is independent from inferences based on the jet afterglow modeling and allows us to partially solve for model degeneracies. The updated best-fitting model parameters with this density constraint are a fireball kinetic energy $E_0 = 1.5_{-1.1}^{+3.6}\times 10^{49}\,\rm{erg}$ ($E_{iso}= 2.1_{-1.5}^{+6.4}\times10^{52}\, \rm{erg}$), jet opening angle $\theta_{0}= 5.9^{+1.0}_{-0.7}\,\rm{deg}$ with characteristic Lorentz factor $\Gamma_j = 163_{-43}^{+23}$, expanding in a low-density medium with $n_0 = 2.5_{-1.9}^{+4.1} \times 10^{-3}\, \rm{cm^{-3}}$ and viewed $\theta_{obs} = 30.4^{+4.0}_{-3.4}\, \rm{deg}$ off-axis. The synchrotron emission originates from a power-law distribution of electrons with $p=2.15^{+0.01}_{-0.02}$. The shock microphysics parameters are constrained to $\epsilon_{\rm{e}} = 0.18_{-0.13}^{+0.30}$ and $\epsilon_{\rm{B}}=2.3_{-2.2}^{+16.0} \times 10^{-3}$. We investigate the presence of X-ray flares and find no statistically significant evidence of $\ge2.5\sigma$ of temporal variability at any time. On 2019 August 14 the Laser Interferometer Gravitational Wave Observatory (LIGO) and the Virgo gravitational wave interferometer announced the detection of a binary merger, S190814bv, with a low false alarm rate (FAR) of about 1 in $1.6\times 10^{25}$ years, a distance of $267\pm 52$ Mpc, a 90\% (50\%) localization region of about 23 (5) deg$^2$, and a probability of being a neutron star--black hole (NS-BH) merger of $>99\%$. The LIGO/Virgo Collaboration (LVC) defines NS-BH such that the lighter binary member has a mass of $<3$ M$_\odot$ and the more massive one has $>5$ M$_\odot$, and this classification is in principle consistent with a BH-BH merger depending on the actual upper mass cut-off for neutron stars. Additionally, the LVC designated a probability that the merger led to matter outside the final BH remnant of $<1\%$, suggesting that an electromagnetic (EM) counterpart is unlikely. Here we report our optical follow-up observations of S190814bv using the Magellan Baade 6.5 m telescope to target all 96 galaxies in the GLADE catalog within the 50\% localization volume (representing about 70\% of the integrated luminosity within this region). No counterpart was identified to a median $3\sigma$ limiting magnitude of $i=22.2$ ($M_i\approx -14.9$ mag), comparable to the brightness of the optical counterpart of the binary neutron star merger GW170817 at the distance of S190814bv; similarly, we can rule out an on-axis jet typical of short GRBs. However, we cannot rule out other realistic models, such as a kilonova with only $\sim 0.01$ M$_\odot$ of lanthanide-rich material, or an off-axis jet with a viewing angle of $\theta_{\rm obs}\gtrsim 15^\circ$., Comment: 10 pages, 1 table, 4 figures, accepted to ApJL

We present a revised and complete optical afterglow light curve of the binary neutron star merger GW170817, enabled by deep Hubble Space Telescope (HST) F606W observations at $\approx\!584$ days post-merger, which provide a robust optical template. The light curve spans $\approx 110-362$ days, and is fully consistent with emission from a relativistic structured jet viewed off-axis, as previously indicated by radio and X-ray data. Combined with contemporaneous radio and X-ray observations, we find no spectral evolution, with a weighted average spectral index of $\langle \beta \rangle = -0.583 \pm 0.013$, demonstrating that no synchrotron break frequencies evolve between the radio and X-ray bands over these timescales. We find that an extrapolation of the post-peak temporal slope of GW170817 to the luminosities of cosmological short GRBs matches their observed jet break times, suggesting that their explosion properties are similar, and that the primary difference in GW170817 is viewing angle. Additionally, we place a deep limit on the luminosity and mass of an underlying globular cluster of $L \lesssim 6.7 \times 10^{3}\,L_{\odot}$, or $M \lesssim 1.3 \times 10^{4}\,M_{\odot}$, at least 4 standard deviations below the peak of the globular cluster mass function of the host galaxy, NGC4993. This limit provides a direct and strong constraint that GW170817 did not form and merge in a globular cluster. Aims. We investigate the evolution of X-ray selected tidal disruption events. Methods. New events are found in near-real time data from XMM-Newton slews and are monitored by multi-wavelength facilities. Results. In August 2016, X-ray emission was detected from the galaxy XMMSL2 J144605.0+685735 (a.k.a. 2MASX 14460522+6857311), a factor 20 times higher than an upper limit from 25 years earlier. The X-ray flux was flat for ~100 days and then fell by a factor 100 over the following 500 days. The UV flux was stable for the first 400 days before fading by a magnitude, while the optical (U,B,V bands) have been roughly constant for 850 days. Optically, the galaxy appears to be quiescent, at a distance of $127\pm{4}$ Mpc (z=$0.029\pm{0.001}$) with a spectrum consisting of a young stellar population of age 1-5 Gyr, an older population and a total stellar mass of ~6 x $10^{9}$ solar masses. The bolometric luminosity peaked at L bol ~ $10^{43}$ ergs s$^{-1}$ with an X-ray spectrum that may be modeled by a power-law of $\Gamma$~2.6 or Comptonisation of a low-temperature thermal component by thermal electrons. We consider a tidal disruption event to be the most likely cause of the flare. Radio emission was absent in this event down to < 10$\mu$Jy, which limits the total energy of a hypothetical off-axis jet to E < 5 x $10^{50}$ ergs. The independent behaviour of the optical, UV and X-ray light curves challenges models where the UV emission is produced by reprocessing of thermal nuclear emission or by stream-stream collisions. We suggest that the observed UV emission may have been produced from a truncated accretion disk and the X-rays from Compton upscattering of these disk photons., Comment: Accepted by A&A

The Very Large Array Sky Survey (VLASS) is a synoptic, all-sky radio sky survey with a unique combination of high angular resolution ($\approx$2.5"), sensitivity (a 1$\sigma$ goal of 70 $\mu$Jy/beam in the coadded data), full linear Stokes polarimetry, time domain coverage, and wide bandwidth (2-4 GHz). The first observations began in September 2017, and observing for the survey will finish in 2024. VLASS will use approximately 5500 hours of time on the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) to cover the whole sky visible to the VLA (Declination $>-40^{\circ}$), a total of 33,885 deg$^2$. The data will be taken in three epochs to allow the discovery of variable and transient radio sources. The survey is designed to engage radio astronomy experts, multi-wavelength astronomers, and citizen scientists alike. By utilizing an "on the fly" interferometry mode, the observing overheads are much reduced compared to a conventional pointed survey. The number of long gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) known to have occurred in the distant Universe (z greater than 5) is small (approx 15), however these events provide a powerful way of probing star formation at the onset of galaxy evolution. In this paper, we present the case for GRB100205A being a largely overlooked high-redshift event. While initially noted as a high-z candidate, this event and its host galaxy have not been explored in detail. By combining optical and near-infrared Gemini afterglow imaging (at t less than 1.3 days since burst) with deep late-time limits on host emission from the Hubble Space Telescope, we show that the most likely scenario is that GRB100205A arose in the redshift range 4-8. GRB100205A is an example of a burst whose afterglow, even at 1 hour post-burst, could only be identified by 8m class IR observations, and suggests that such observations of all optically dark bursts may be necessary to significantly enhance the number of high-redshift GRBs known., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

Photometric classification of supernovae (SNe) is imperative as recent and upcoming optical time-domain surveys, such as the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST), overwhelm the available resources for spectrosopic follow-up. Here we develop a range of light curve classification pipelines, trained on 518 spectroscopically-classified SNe from the Pan-STARRS1 Medium-Deep Survey (PS1-MDS): 357 Type Ia, 93 Type II, 25 Type IIn, 21 Type Ibc, and 17 Type I SLSNe. We present a new parametric analytical model that can accommodate a broad range of SN light curve morphologies, including those with a plateau, and fit this model to data in four PS1 filters (griz). We test a number of feature extraction methods, data augmentation strategies, and machine learning algorithms to predict the class of each SN. Our best pipelines result in 90% average accuracy, 70% average purity, and 80% average completeness for all SN classes, with the highest success rates for Type Ia SNe and SLSNe and the lowest for Type Ibc SNe. Despite the greater complexity of our classification scheme, the purity of our Type Ia SN classification, 95%, is on par with methods developed specifically for Type Ia versus non-Type Ia binary classification. As the first of its kind, this study serves as a guide to developing and training classification algorithms for a wide range of SN types with a purely empirical training set, particularly one that is similar in its characteristics to the expected LSST main survey strategy. On 2019 April 25.346 and 26.640 UT the LIGO and Virgo gravitational wave (GW) observatories announced the detection of the first candidate events in Observing Run 3 that contain at least one neutron star. S190425z is a likely binary neutron star (BNS) merger at $d_L = 156 \pm 41$ Mpc, while S190426c is possibly the first NS-BH merger ever detected, at $d_L = 377 \pm 100$ Mpc, although with marginal statistical significance. Here we report our optical follow-up observations for both events using the MMT 6.5-m telescope, as well as our spectroscopic follow-up of candidate counterparts (which turned out to be unrelated) with the 4.1-m SOAR telescope. We compare to publicly reported searches, explore the overall areal coverage and depth, and evaluate those in relation to the optical/NIR kilonova emission from the BNS merger GW170817, to theoretical kilonova models, and to short GRB afterglows. We find that for a GW170817-like kilonova, the partial volume covered spans up to about 40% for S190425z and 60% for S190426c. For an on-axis jet typical of short GRBs, the search effective volume is larger, but such a configuration is expected in at most a few percent of mergers. We further find that wide-field $\gamma$-ray and X-ray limits rule out luminous on-axis SGRBs, for a large fraction of the localization regions, although these searches are not sufficiently deep in the context of the $\gamma$-ray emission from GW170817 or off-axis SGRB afterglows. The results indicate that some optical follow-up searches are sufficiently deep for counterpart identification to about 300 Mpc, but that localizations better than 1000 deg$^2$ are likely essential., Comment: The first six authors contributed equally to this work

We present and analyse a new tidal disruption event (TDE), AT2017eqx at redshift z=0.1089, discovered by Pan-STARRS and ATLAS. The position of the transient is consistent with the nucleus of its host galaxy; it peaks at a luminosity of $L \approx 10^{44}$ erg s$^{-1}$; and the spectrum shows a persistent blackbody temperature $T \gtrsim 20,000$ K with broad H I and He II emission. The lines are initially centered at zero velocity, but by 100 days the H I lines disappear while the He II develops a blueshift of $\gtrsim 5,000$ km s$^{-1}$. Both the early- and late-time morphologies have been seen in other TDEs, but the complete transition between them is unprecedented. The evolution can be explained by combining an extended atmosphere, undergoing slow contraction, with a wind in the polar direction becoming visible at late times. Our observations confirm that a lack of hydrogen a TDE spectrum does not indicate a stripped star, while the proposed model implies that much of the diversity in TDEs may be due to the observer viewing angle. Modelling the light curve suggests AT2017eqx resulted from the complete disruption of a solar-mass star by a black hole of $\sim 10^{6.3} M_\odot$. The host is another quiescent, Balmer-strong galaxy, though fainter and less centrally concentrated than most TDE hosts. Supernovae are among the most powerful and influential explosions in the universe. They are also ideal multi-messenger laboratories to study extreme astrophysics. However, many fundamental properties of supernovae related to their diverse progenitor systems and explosion mechanisms remain poorly constrained. Here we outline how late-time spectroscopic observations obtained during the nebular phase (several months to years after explosion), made possible with the next generation of Extremely Large Telescopes, will facilitate transformational science opportunities and rapidly accelerate the community towards our goal of achieving a complete understanding of supernova explosions. We highlight specific examples of how complementary GMT and TMT instrumentation will enable high fidelity spectroscopy from which the line profiles and luminosities of elements tracing mass loss and ejecta can be used to extract kinematic and chemical information with unprecedented detail, for hundreds of objects. We present the detection of an unresolved radio source coincident with the position of the Type I superluminous supernova (SLSN) PTF10hgi ($z=0.098$) about 7.5 years post-explosion, with a flux density of $F_\nu(6\,\,{\rm GHz)}\approx 47.3\ \mu Jy$ and a luminosity of $L_\nu(6\,\,{\rm GHz})\approx 1.1\times 10^{28}$ erg s$^{-1}$ Hz$^{-1}$. This represents the first detection of radio emission coincident with a SLSN on any timescale. We investigate various scenarios for the origin of the radio emission: star formation activity, an active galactic nucleus, and a non-relativistic supernova blastwave. While any of these would be quite novel if confirmed, none appear likely when taken in context of the other properties of the host galaxy, previous radio observations of SLSNe, and the general population of hydrogen-poor SNe. Instead, the radio emission is reminiscent of the quiescent radio source associated with the repeating FRB 121102, which has been argued to be powered by a magnetar born in a SLSN or LGRB explosion several decades ago. We show that the properties of the radio source are consistent with a magnetar wind nebula or an off-axis jet, indicating the presence of a central engine. Our directed search for FRBs from the location of PTF10hgi using 40 min of VLA phased-array data reveals no detections to a limit of $22$ mJy ($10\sigma$; 10 ms duration).
