We have studied the laser induced ultrafast quenching of Gd 4f magnetic order in ferrimagnetic Co100-xGdx alloys to highlight the role of the Co 3d–Gd 5d inter-atomic exchange coupling. We have taken advantage of the ultrashort soft X-ray pulses deliver by the femtoslicing beamline at the BESSY II synchrotron radiation source at the Helmholtz–Zentrum Berlin to perform element- and time-resolved X-ray Magnetic Circular Dichroism spectroscopy. Our results show that the laser induced quenching of Gd 4f magnetic order occurs on very different time-scales for the Co72Gd28, the Co77Gd23 and the Co79Gd21 alloys. Most of the magnetic moment losses occur within the first picosecond (ps) while the electron distribution is strongly out of equilibrium. After the equilibration of the electrons and lattice temperatures (t > 1 ps), the magnetic losses occur on slower rates that depend on the alloy composition: increasing the Co composition speeds up the demagnetization of Gd 4f sublattice. The strength of the Co 3d–Gd 5d inter-atomic exchange coupling which depends on composition, determines the efficiency of the angular momentum flow from the Gd 4f spin towards the lattice. A rich thermal magnetic phase diagram has been determined by magneto-optical Kerr magnetometry and microscopy in a He+ ion irradiated ultrathin Pt/Co(0.5 nm)/Pt film. The components of the net magnetization and the evolution and disappearance of the ribbonlike magnetic domain pattern have been studied in the perpendicular to in-plane spin reorientation transition temperature region. As observed in a dipolar frustrated ferromagnet, the ribbon pattern blurs progressively with increasing the temperature as due to efficient spatial fluctuations. The magneto-optical Kerr magnetometry technique is employed to explain the thermal magnetic phase diagram exhibited by the [He.sup.+] ion irradiated ultrathin Pt/Co(0.5 nm)/Pt film. The ribbon pattern demonstrated by the film is shown to get blurred with an increase in the temperature.

Correlation between structure, electronic properties, and magnetism in CoxGd1-x thin amorphous films was investigated. The thickness averaged properties of covered thin films are consistent with those of in-depth homogeneous amorphous alloys. In spite of that, x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) and photoemission measurements on as-grown films have shown signatures consistent with a lateral gradient composition and a Gd surfactant effect. A tendency of Gd atoms to migrate to the surface followed by an oxidation down to 8 Å has been evidenced. Our results further demonstrate the extreme sensitivity of the magnetic properties of ferrimagnetic alloys to their structure and local concentration. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We have investigated the laser induced ultrafast dynamics of Gd 4f spins at the surface of Co x Gd 100-x alloys by means of surface-sensitive and time-resolved dichroic resonant Auger spectroscopy. We have observed that the laser induced quenching of Gd 4f magnetic order at the surface of the Co x Gd 100-x alloys occur on a much longer time scale than that previously reported in "bulk sensitive" time-resolved experiments. In parallel, we have characterized the static structural and magnetic properties at the surface and in the bulk of these alloys by combining Physical Property Measurement System (PPMS) magnetometry with X-ray Magnetic Circular Dichroism in absorption spectroscopy (XMCD) and X-Ray Photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The PPMS and XMCD measurements give information regarding the composition in the bulk of the alloys. The XPS measurements show non-homogeneous composition at the surface of the alloys with a strongly increased Gd content within the first layers compared to the nominal bulk values. Such larger Gd concentration results in a reduced indirect Gd 4f spin-lattice coupling. After excitation by femtosecond laser pulses, Gd and Tb exhibit ultrafast demagnetization in two steps, with the time constant of the second step linked to the coupling strength of the 4f magnetic moments to the lattice. In time-resolved magneto-optical Kerr effect measurements of Gd1-xTbx alloys, we observe a decrease in this time constant from 33 to 9 ps with Tb content x increasing from 0 to 0.7. We explain this behavior by the stronger spin-lattice coupling of Tb compared to Gd, which increases the effective spin-lattice coupling in Gd1-xTbx with x. In contrast, the faster time constant of the first demagnetization step exhibits no dependence on x. Additional time- and element-resolved x-ray magnetic circular dichroism measurements show a two-step demagnetization of Gd and Tb in Gd0.6Tb0.4 with an equivalent time scale of the second step but a different magnitude of demagnetization which persists for 15 ps. We explain this by an increased coupling of the Gd 4f magnetic moments to the lattice compared to pure Gd, via interatomic exchange coupling to the neighboring Tb 4f moments mediated by 5d electrons, which has limited efficiency and allows an estimation of a characteristic time scale of the interatomic exchange coupling. We assign the first demagnetization step to the dynamics of the laser-excited 5d electrons, while the second demagnetization step is dominated by the strength of spin-lattice coupling of the 4f electrons. The SOLEIL synchrotron radiation source is regularly operated in special filling modes dedicated to pump-probe experiments. Among others, the low-α mode operation is characterized by shorter pulse duration and represents the natural bridge between 50 ps synchrotron pulses and femtosecond experiments. Here, the capabilities in low-α mode of the experimental set-ups developed at the TEMPO beamline to perform pump-probe experiments with soft X-rays based on photoelectron or photon detection are presented. A 282 kHz repetition-rate femtosecond laser is synchronized with the synchrotron radiation time structure to induce fast electronic and/or magnetic excitations. Detection is performed using a two-dimensional space resolution plus time resolution detector based on microchannel plates equipped with a delay line. Results of time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy, circular dichroism and magnetic scattering experiments are reported, and their respective advantages and limitations in the framework of high-time-resolution pump-probe experiments compared and discussed.
