Abstract: This document is comprised of a collection of updated preliminary parameters for the key parts of the muon collider. The updated preliminary parameters follow on from the October 2023 Tentative Parameters Report. Particular attention has been given to regions of the facility that are believed to hold greater technical uncertainty in their design and that have a strong impact on the cost and power consumption of the facility. The data is collected from a collaborative spreadsheet and transferred to overleaf.

2. An Evaluation of Different Numerical Methods to Calculate the Pitch-angle Diffusion Coefficient from Full-orbit Simulations: disentangling a rope of sand

Abstract: The pitch-angle diffusion coefficient quantifies the effect of pitch-angle scattering on charged particles propagating through turbulent magnetic fields and is a key ingredient in understanding the diffusion of these particles along the background magnetic field. Despite its significance, only a limited number of studies have calculated the pitch-angle diffusion coefficient from test particle simulations in synthetic magnetic turbulence, employing various, often quite different, techniques for this purpose. In this study, we undertake a comparative analysis of nine different methods for calculating the pitch-angle diffusion coefficient from full-orbit simulations. Our objective is to find the strengths and limitations of each method and to determine the most reliable approach. Although all nine methods should theoretically yield comparable results, certain methods may be ill-suited for numerical investigations, while others may not be applicable under conditions of strong turbulence. Through this investigation, we aim to provide recommendations for best practices when employing these methods in future numerical studies of pitch-angle scattering.

Abstract: The International Muon Collider Collaboration (IMCC) [1] was established in 2020 following the recommendations of the European Strategy for Particle Physics (ESPP) and the implementation of the European Strategy for Particle Physics-Accelerator R&D Roadmap by the Laboratory Directors Group [2], hereinafter referred to as the the European LDG roadmap. The Muon Collider Study (MuC) covers the accelerator complex, detectors and physics for a future muon collider. In 2023, European Commission support was obtained for a design study of a muon collider (MuCol) [3]. This project started on 1st March 2023, with work-packages aligned with the overall muon collider studies. In preparation of and during the 2021-22 U.S. Snowmass process, the muon collider project parameters, technical studies and physics performance studies were performed and presented in great detail. Recently, the P5 panel [4] in the U.S. recommended a muon collider R&D, proposed to join the IMCC and envisages that the U.S. should prepare to host a muon collider, calling this their "muon shot". 4. A detailed survey of the parallel mean free path of solar energetic particle protons and electrons

Abstract: In this work, more than a dozen solar energetic particle (SEP) events are identified where the source region is magnetically well-connected to at least one spacecraft at 1~au. The observed intensity-time profiles, for all available proton and electron energy channels, are compared to results computed using a numerical 1D SEP transport model in order to derive the parallel mean free paths (pMFPs) as a function of energy (or rigidity) at 1~au. These inversion results are then compared to theoretical estimates of the pMFP, using observed turbulence quantities with observationally-motivated variations as input. For protons, a very good comparison between inversion and theoretical results is obtained. It is shown that the observed inter-event variations in the inversion pMFP values can be explained by natural variations in the background turbulence values. For electrons, there is relatively good agreement with pMFPs derived assuming the damping model of dynamical turbulence, although the theoretical values are extremely sensitive to the details of the turbulence dissipation range which themselves display a high level of variation., Comment: Accepted to ApJ

Abstract: In this paper we explore the idea of using multi-spacecraft observations of Jovian electrons to measure the 3D distribution of these particles in the inner heliosphere. We present simulations of Jovian electron intensities along selected spacecraft trajectories for 2021 and compare these, admittedly qualitatively, to these measurements. Using the data-model comparison we emphasize how such a study can be used to constrain the transport parameters in the inner heliosphere, and how this can lead to additional insight into energetic particle transport. Model results are also shown along the expected trajectories of selected spacecraft, including the off-ecliptic phase of the Solar Orbiter mission from 2025 onward. Lastly, we revisit the use of historical data and discuss upcoming missions that may contribute to Jovian electron measurements., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

Abstract: A muon collider would enable the big jump ahead in energy reach that is needed for a fruitful exploration of fundamental interactions. The challenges of producing muon collisions at high luminosity and 10 TeV centre of mass energy are being investigated by the recently-formed International Muon Collider Collaboration. This Review summarises the status and the recent advances on muon colliders design, physics and detector studies. The aim is to provide a global perspective of the field and to outline directions for future work.

Abstract: The processes responsible for the acceleration of solar energetic particles (SEPs) are still not well understood, including whether SEP electrons and protons are accelerated by common or separate processes. Using a numerical particle transport model that includes both pitch-angle and perpendicular spatial diffusion, we simulate, amongst other quantities, the onset delay for MeV electrons and protons and compare the results to observations of SEPs from widely-separated spacecraft. Such observations have previously been interpreted, in a simple scenario assuming no perpendicular diffusion, as evidence for different electron and proton sources. We show that, by assuming a common particle source together with perpendicular diffusion, we are able to simultaneously reproduce the onset delays for both electrons and protons. We argue that this points towards a common accelerator for these particles. Moreover, a relatively broad particle source is required in the model to correctly describe the observations. This is suggestive of diffusive shock acceleration occurring at large shock structures playing a significant role in the acceleration of these SEPs., Comment: Accepted to ApJ

Abstract: Chicago Public Schools is working to improve early literacy outcomes through a multiyear professional development initiative for preK-2 teachers. The P-2 Balanced Literacy Initiative aims to improve literacy instruction by training teachers to implement effective early literacy instruction balancing systematic foundational skills instruction with reading and writing instruction involving rich, complex texts. The study compared the reading achievement of students who attended schools that received the enhanced supports (priority schools) with the reading achievement of students who attended similar schools that received only the initiative's standard supports (nonpriority schools). It also examined differences between priority and nonpriority schools in teachers' and administrators' participation in professional development sessions and looked at the successes and challenges of implementation. The study found that one year after implementation of the initiative, attending a priority school did not lead to higher end-of-year reading achievement than attending a nonpriority school after other factors were adjusted for. Teachers and administrators in priority schools were more likely than those in nonpriority schools to participate in the initiative's core professional development sessions. Abstract: A multi-TeV muon collider offers a spectacular opportunity in the direct exploration of the energy frontier. Offering a combination of unprecedented energy collisions in a comparatively clean leptonic environment, a high energy muon collider has the unique potential to provide both precision measurements and the highest energy reach in one machine that cannot be paralleled by any currently available technology. The topic generated a lot of excitement in Snowmass meetings and continues to attract a large number of supporters, including many from the early career community. In light of this very strong interest within the US particle physics community, Snowmass Energy, Theory and Accelerator Frontiers created a cross-frontier Muon Collider Forum in November of 2020. The Forum has been meeting on a monthly basis and organized several topical workshops dedicated to physics, accelerator technology, and detector R&D. Findings of the Forum are summarized in this report.

Abstract: We compare two different implementations of fault-tolerant entangling gates on logical qubits. In one instance, a twelve-qubit trapped-ion quantum computer is used to implement a non-transversal logical CNOT gate between two five qubit codes. The operation is evaluated with varying degrees of fault tolerance, which are provided by including quantum error correction circuit primitives known as flagging and pieceable fault tolerance. In the second instance, a twenty-qubit trapped-ion quantum computer is used to implement a transversal logical CNOT gate on two [[7,1,3]] color codes. The two codes were implemented on different but similar devices, and in both instances, all of the quantum error correction primitives, including the determination of corrections via decoding, are implemented during runtime using a classical compute environment that is tightly integrated with the quantum processor. For different combinations of the primitives, logical state fidelity measurements are made after applying the gate to different input states, providing bounds on the process fidelity. We find the highest fidelity operations with the color code, with the fault-tolerant SPAM operation achieving fidelities of 0.99939(15) and 0.99959(13) when preparing eigenstates of the logical X and Z operators, which is higher than the average physical qubit SPAM fidelities of 0.9968(2) and 0.9970(1) for the physical X and Z bases, respectively. When combined with a logical transversal CNOT gate, we find the color code to perform the sequence--state preparation, CNOT, measure out--with an average fidelity bounded by [0.9957,0.9963]. The logical fidelity bounds are higher than the analogous physical-level fidelity bounds, which we find to be [0.9850,0.9903], reflecting multiple physical noise sources such as SPAM errors for two qubits, several single-qubit gates, a two-qubit gate and some amount of memory error.

19. On the Turbulent Reduction of Drifts for Solar Energetic Particles

Abstract: Particle drifts perpendicular to the background magnetic field have been proposed by some authors as an explanation for the very efficient perpendicular transport of solar energetic particles (SEPs). This process, however, competes with perpendicular diffusion caused by magnetic turbulence, which can also disrupt the drift patterns and reduce the efficiency of drift effects. The latter phenomenon is well known in cosmic ray studies, but not yet considered in SEP models. Additionally, SEP models which do not include drifts, especially for electrons, use turbulent drift reduction as a justification of this omission, without critically evaluating or testing this assumption. This article presents the first theoretical step for a theory of drift suppression in SEP transport. This is done by deriving the turbulence-dependent drift reduction function with a pitch-angle dependence, as applicable for anisotropic particle distributions, and by investigating to what extent drifts will be reduced in the inner heliosphere for realistic turbulence conditions and different pitch-angle dependencies of the perpendicular diffusion coefficient. The influence of the derived turbulent drift reduction factors on the transport of SEPs are tested, using a state-of-the-art SEP transport code, for several expressions of theoretically-derived perpendicular diffusion coefficients. It is found, for realistic turbulence conditions in the inner heliosphere, that cross-field diffusion will have the largest influence on the perpendicular transport of SEPs, as opposed to particle drifts., Comment: This is a pre-print of an article accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal

25. A Primer on Focused Solar Energetic Particle Transport: Basic physics and recent modelling results

Abstract: The basics of focused transport as applied to solar energetic particles are reviewed, paying special attention to areas of common misconception. The micro-physics of charged particles interacting with slab turbulence are investigated to illustrate the concept of pitch-angle scattering, where after the distribution function and focused transport equation are introduced as theoretical tools to describe the transport processes and it is discussed how observable quantities can be calculated from the distribution function. In particular, two approximations, the diffusion-advection and the telegraph equation, are compared in simplified situations to the full solution of the focused transport equation describing particle motion along a magnetic field line. It is shown that these approximations are insufficient to capture the complexity of the physical processes involved. To overcome such limitations, a finite-difference model, which is open for use by the public, is introduced to solve the focused transport equation. Abstract: Prior to establishing operation of the world's first mulit-turn superconducting Energy Recovery Linac, (ERL) the Cornell-BNL Energy Recovery Test Accelerator (CBETA) was configured for one turn energy recovery. In this setup, direct measurement of the beam loading in each of the main linac cavities demonstrated high energy recovery efficiency. Specifically, a total one-turn power balance efficiency of 99.4%, with per cavity power balances ranging from 99.2-99.8%, was measured. When accounting for small particle losses occurring in the path length adjustment sections of the return loop, this corresponds to per cavity single particle energy recovery efficiencies ranging from 99.8 to 100.5%. A maximum current of 70 microamps was energy recovered, limited by radiation shielding of the beam stop in its preliminary installation.

Abstract: Experimental results and simulation models show that crystals might play a relevant role for the development of new generations of high-energy and high-intensity particle accelerators and might disclose innovative possibilities at existing ones. In this paper we describe the most advanced manufacturing techniques of crystals suitable for operations at ultra-high energy and ultra-high intensity particle accelerators, reporting as an example of potential applications the collimation of the particle beams circulating in the Large Hadron Collider at CERN, which will be upgraded through the addition of bent crystals in the frame of the High Luminosity Large Hadron Collider project.

Abstract: This paper considers a multi-armed bandit (MAB) problem in which multiple mobile agents receive rewards by sampling from a collection of spatially dispersed stochastic processes, called bandits. The goal is to formulate a decentralized policy for each agent, in order to maximize the total cumulative reward over all agents, subject to option availability and inter-agent communication constraints. The problem formulation is motivated by applications in which a team of autonomous mobile robots cooperates to accomplish an exploration and exploitation task in an uncertain environment. Bandit locations are represented by vertices of the spatial graph. At any time, an agent's option consist of sampling the bandit at its current location, or traveling along an edge of the spatial graph to a new bandit location. Communication constraints are described by a directed, non-stationary, stochastic communication graph. At any time, agents may receive data only from their communication graph in-neighbors. For the case of a single agent on a fully connected spatial graph, it is known that the expected regret for any optimal policy is necessarily bounded below by a function that grows as the logarithm of time. A class of policies called upper confidence bound (UCB) algorithms asymptotically achieve logarithmic regret for the classical MAB problem. In this paper, we propose a UCB-based decentralized motion and option selection policy and a non-stationary stochastic communication protocol that guarantee logarithmic regret. To our knowledge, this is the first such decentralized policy for non-fully connected spatial graphs with communication constraints. Abstract: Consider critical site percolation on $\mathbb{Z}^d$ with $d \geq 2$. We prove a lower bound of order $n^{- d^2}$ for point-to-point connection probabilities, where $n$ is the distance between the points. Most of the work in our proof concerns a `construction' which finally reduces the problem to a topological one. This is then solved by applying a topological fact, which follows from Brouwer's fixed point theorem. Our bound improves the lower bound with exponent $2 d (d-1)$, used by Cerf in 2015 to obtain an upper bound for the so-called two-arm probabilities. Abstract: This work describes first commissioning results from the Cornell Brookhaven Energy Recovery Test Accelerator Fractional Arc Test. These include the recommissioning of the Cornell photo-injector, the first full energy operation of the main linac with beam, as well as commissioning of the lowest energy matching beamline (splitter) and a partial section of the Fixed Field Alternating gradient (FFA) return loop featuring first production Halbach style permanent magnets. Achieving these tasks required characterization of the injection beam, calibration and phasing of the main linac cavities, demonstration of the required 36 MeV energy gain, and measurement of the splitter line horizontal dispersion and R56 at the nominal 42 MeV. In addition, a procedure for determining the BPM offsets, as well as the tune per cell in the FFA section via scanning the linac energy and inducing betatron oscillations around the periodic orbit in the fractional arc was developed and tested. A detailed comparison of these measurements to simulation is discussed.

Abstract: Background: Mortality among people with HIV declined with the introduction of combination antiretroviral therapy. We investigated trends over time in all-cause and cause-specific mortality in people with HIV from 1999-2020. Methods: Data were collected from the D:A:D cohort from 1999 through January 2015 and RESPOND from October 2017 through 2020. Age-standardized all-cause and cause-specific mortality rates, classified using Coding Causes of Death in HIV (CoDe), were calculated. Poisson regression models were used to assess mortality trends over time. Results: Among 55716 participants followed for a median of 6 years (IQR 3-11), 5263 participants died (crude mortality rate [MR] 13.7/1000 PYFU; 95%CI 13.4-14.1). Changing patterns of mortality were observed with AIDS as the most common cause of death between 1999- 2009 (n = 952, MR 4.2/1000 PYFU; 95%CI 4.0-4.5) and non-AIDS defining malignancy (NADM) from 2010 -2020 (n = 444, MR 2.8/1000 PYFU; 95%CI 2.5-3.1). In multivariable analysis, all-cause mortality declined over time (adjusted mortality rate ratio [aMRR] 0.97 per year; 95%CI 0.96, 0.98), mostly from 1999 through 2010 (aMRR 0.96 per year; 95%CI 0.95-0.97), and with no decline shown from 2011 through 2020 (aMRR 1·00 per year; 95%CI 0·96-1·05). Mortality due all known causes except NADM also declined over the entire follow-up period. Conclusion: Mortality among people with HIV in the D:A:D and/or RESPOND cohorts decreased between 1999 and 2009 and was stable over the period from 2010 through 2020. The decline in mortality rates was not fully explained by improvements in immunologic-virologic status or other risk factors.

44. Feedback Regularization and Geometric PID Control for Robust Stabilization of a Planar Three-link Hybrid Bipedal Walking Model

Abstract: This paper applies a recently developed geometric PID controller to stabilize a three-link planar bipedal hybrid dynamic walking model. The three links represent the robot torso and two kneeless legs, with an independent control torque available at each hip joint. The geometric PID controller is derived for fully actuated mechanical systems, however in the swing phase the three-link biped robot has three degrees of freedom and only two controls. Following the bipedal walking literature, underactuation is addressed by choosing two "virtual constraints" to enforce, and verifying the stability of the resulting two-dimensional zero dynamics. The resulting controlled dynamics do not have the structure of a mechanical system, however this structure is restored using "feedback regularization," following which geometric PID control is used to provide robust asymptotic regulation of the virtual constraints. Abstract: This design report describes the construction plans for the world's first multi-pass SRF ERL. It is a 4-pass recirculating linac that recovers the beam's energy by 4 additional, decelerating passes. All beams are returned for deceleration in a single beam pipe with a large-momentum-aperture permanent magnet FFAG optics. Cornell University has been pioneering a new class of accelerators, Energy Recovery Linacs (ERLs), with a new characteristic set of beam parameters. Technology has been prototyped that is essential for any high brightness electron ERL. This includes a DC electron source and an SRF injector Linac with world-record current and normalized brightness in a bunch train, a high-current linac cryomodule, and a high-power beam stop, and several diagnostics tools for high-current and high-brightness beams. All these are now being used to construct a novel one-cryomodule ERL in Cornell's Wilson Lab. Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) has designed a multi-turn ERL for eRHIC, where beam is transported more than 20 times around the 4km long RHIC tunnel. The number of transport lines is minimized by using two arcs with strongly-focusing permanent magnets that can control many beams of different energies. A collaboration between BNL and Cornell has been formed to investigate this multi-turn eRHIC ERL design by building a 4-turn, one-cryomodule ERL at Cornell. It also has a return loop built with strongly focusing permanent magnets and is meant to accelerate 40mA beam to 150MeV. This high-brightness beam will have applications beyond accelerator research, in industry, in nuclear physics, and in X-ray science.

46. Short‐ and long‐term prognostic performance of exercise ECG and myocardial perfusion SPECT.

Abstract: Background: Myocardial perfusion SPECT (MPS) and exercise electrocardiography (Ex‐ECG) results are of prognostic importance for short‐term follow up duration. However, the value of MPS or Ex‐ECG findings for long‐term risk assessment is less evident as underlying risk factors for ischemic heart disease (IHD) gain in importance. Objectives: To assess the short‐ and long‐term prognostic value of MPS and Ex‐ECG in relation to known risk factors. Methods and Materials: An observational study of 908 patients (age 63 years, 49% male, 45% prior IHD) referred for MPS and Ex‐ECG. Follow‐up was divided into two periods (short‐term: <5 years and long‐term: >5 years). Cardiac events were defined as a composite of acute myocardial infarction, unstable angina, unplanned revascularization and cardiovascular death. Results: The composite endpoint occurred in 95 patients (short‐term follow up) and in 94 patients (long‐term follow up). In multivariable models stress testing had a strong predictive value for short‐term follow up (HR for MPS = 2.9, CI = 1.9–4.5, p < 0.001 and HR for Ex‐ECG = 2.1, CI 1.3–3.3, p = 0.002), but no predictive value for long‐term follow up (HR for MPS = 0.9, CI = 0.5–1.5, p = 0.70 and HR for Ex‐ECG = 1.0, CI = 0.6–1.6, p = 0.92). Male sex and prior IHD were significant predictors regardless of follow up duration. Age, diabetes and decreased exercise capacity were risk factors for long‐term follow up. Conclusions: The prognostic value of MPS and Ex‐ECG results are strong for short‐term follow up but diminish over time and do not contribute significantly in multivariable models after 5 years.
