The synthesis of heavy elements in supernovae is affected by low-energy (n,p) and (p,n) reactions on unstable nuclei, yet experimental data on such reaction rates are scarce. The SECAR (SEparator for CApture Reactions) recoil separator at FRIB (Facility for Rare Isotope Beams) was originally designed to measure astrophysical reactions that change the mass of a nucleus significantly. We used a novel approach that integrates machine learning with ion-optical simulations to find an ion-optical solution for the separator that enables the measurement of (p,n) reactions, despite the reaction leaving the mass of the nucleus nearly unchanged. A new measurement of the $^{58}$Fe(p,n)$^{58}$Co reaction in inverse kinematics with a 3.66$\pm$0.12 MeV/nucleon $^{58}$Fe beam (corresponding to 3.69$\pm$0.12 MeV proton energy in normal kinematics) yielded a cross-section of 20.3$\pm$6.3 mb and served as a benchmark for the new technique demonstrating its effectiveness in achieving the required performance criteria. This novel approach marks a significant advancement in experimental nuclear astrophysics, as it paves the way for studying astrophysically important (p,n) reactions on unstable nuclei produced at FRIB.

Angular distributions of the elastic and inelastic deuteron-nucleus scattering off $^{24}$Mg, $^{28}$Si, $^{58}$Ni, $^{90}$Zr, $^{116}$Sn, and $^{208}$Pb have been measured at a beam energy of 98 MeV/nucleon, with the goal of constraining the deuteron optical potential in this kinematical regime, and to extract the reduced transition probabilities for the ground-state transitions to low-lying excited states of these nuclei. Two potential models were used in the analysis of the measured $(d,d)$ and $(d,d')$ data within the optical model and the distorted-wave Born approximation: the phenomenological optical model potential associated with the collective model of nuclear scattering, and the semi-microscopic double-folding model of the deuteron-nucleus potential based on a realistic density-dependent M3Y interaction. The deuteron optical potential and inelastic $(d,d')$ scattering form factors were calculated using these two potential models, allowing for a direct comparison between the potential models as well as the validation of the deduced $E\lambda$ transition rates., Comment: Accepted for publication in Phys. Absolute cross sections measured using electromagnetic devices to separate and detect heavy recoiling ions need to be corrected for charge state fractions. Accurate prediction of charge state distributions using theoretical models is not always a possibility, especially in energy and mass regions where data is sparse. As such, it is often necessary to measure charge state fractions directly. In this paper we present a novel method of using a scintillation screen along with a CMOS camera to image the charge dispersed beam after a set of magnetic dipoles. A measurement of the charge state distribution for 88Sr passing through a natural carbon foil is performed. Using a Bayesian model to extract statistically meaningful uncertainties from these images, we find agreement between the new method and a more traditional method using Faraday cups. Future work is need to better understand systematic uncertainties. Our technique offers a viable method to measure charge state distributions.

A new \textsuperscript{3}He-driven IGISOL production station and mass separator have been designed to produce neutron-deficient low-mass isotopes at the Cyclotron Institute for the TAMUTRAP facility. A High Rigidity Spectrometer (HRS) has been designed for experiments at the Facility for Rare-Isotope Beams (FRIB) at Michigan State University (MSU). The HRS will allow experiments to be performed with the most exotic neutron-rich isotopes at high beam energies ($\gtrsim$100MeV/u). The HRS consists of an analysis beamline called the High-Transmission Beamline (HTBL) and the spectrometer proper called the Spectrometer Section. The maximum magnetic rigidity of the HRS is 8Tm, which corresponds to the rigidities at which rare-isotope beams are optimally produced at FRIB. The resolving power, angular acceptance, and momentum acceptance are set to match the anticipated scientific program. The SEparator for CApture Reactions (SECAR) is a next-generation recoil separator system at the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB) designed for the direct measurement of capture reactions on unstable nuclei in inverse kinematics. To maximize the performance of this system, stringent requirements on the beam alignment to the central beam axis and on the ion-optical settings need to be achieved. These can be difficult to attain through manual tuning by human operators without potentially leaving the system in a sub-optimal and irreproducible state. In this work, we present the first development of online Bayesian optimization with a Gaussian process model to tune an ion beam through a nuclear astrophysics recoil separator. We show that this method achieves small incoming angular deviations (\textless 1 mrad) in an efficient and reproducible manner that is at least three times faster than standard hand-tuning. Additionally, we present a Bayesian method for experimental optimization of the ion optics, and show that it validates the nominal theoretical ion-optical settings of the device, and improves the mass separation by 32\% for some beams.

We have developed and tested an experimental technique for the measurement of low-energy (p,n) reactions in inverse kinematics relevant to nuclear astrophysics. The proposed setup is located at the ReA3 facility at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory. In the current approach, we operate the beam-transport line in ReA3 as a recoil separator while tagging the outgoing neutrons from the (p,n) reactions with the low-energy neutron detector array (LENDA). The developed technique was verified by using the $^{40}$Ar(p,n)$^{40}$K reaction as a probe. The results of the proof-of-principle experiment with the $^{40}$Ar beam show that cross-section measurements within an uncertainty of $\sim$25\% are feasible with count rates up to 7 counts/mb/pnA/s. In this article, we give a detailed description of the experimental setup, and present the analysis method and results from the test experiment. We observed the atomic $1s$ and $2p$ states of $\pi^-$ bound to ${}^{121}{\rm Sn}$ nuclei as distinct peak structures in the missing mass spectra of the ${}^{122}{\rm Sn}(d,{}^3{\rm He})$ nuclear reaction. A very intense deuteron beam and a spectrometer with a large angular acceptance let us achieve potential of discovery, which includes capability of determining the angle-dependent cross sections with high statistics. The $2p$ state in a Sn nucleus was observed for the first time. The binding energies and widths of the pionic states are determined and found to be consistent with previous experimental results of other Sn isotopes. The spectrum is measured at finite reaction angles for the first time. The formation cross sections at the reaction angles between 0 and $2^\circ$ are determined. The observed reaction-angle dependence of each state is reproduced by theoretical calculations. However, the quantitative comparison with our high-precision data reveals a significant discrepancy between the measured and calculated formation cross sections of the pionic $1s$ state.

The $^{22}$Ne($\alpha$,n)$^{25}$Mg reaction is the dominant neutron source for the slow neutron capture process ($s$-process) in massive stars and contributes, together with the $^{13}$C($\alpha$,n)$^{16}$O, to the production of neutrons for the $s$-process in Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) stars. However, the reaction is endothermic and competes directly with the $^{22}$Ne($\alpha,\gamma)^{26}$Mg radiative capture. The uncertainties for both reactions are large owing to the uncertainty in the level structure of $^{26}$Mg near the alpha and neutron separation energies. These uncertainties are affecting the s-process nucleosynthesis calculations in theoretical stellar models. Indirect studies in the past have been successful in determining the energies, $\gamma$-ray and neutron widths of the $^{26}$Mg states in the energy region of interest. But, the high Coulomb barrier hinders a direct measurement of the resonance strengths, which are determined by the $\alpha$-widths for these states. The goal of the present experiments is to identify the critical resonance states and to precisely measure the $\alpha$-widths by $\alpha$ transfer techniques . Hence, the $\alpha$-inelastic scattering and $\alpha$-transfer measurements were performed on a solid $^{26}$Mg target and a $^{22}$Ne gas target, respectively, using the Grand Raiden Spectrometer at RCNP, Osaka, Japan. Six levels (E$_x$ = 10717 keV , 10822 keV, 10951 keV, 11085 keV, 11167 keV and 11317 keV) have been observed above the $\alpha$-threshold in the region of interest (10.61 - 11.32 MeV). The rates are dominated in both reaction channels by the resonance contributions of the states at E$_x$ = 10951, 11167 and 11317 keV. The E$_x$ =11167 keV has the most appreciable impact on the ($\alpha,\gamma$) rate and therefore plays an important role for the prediction of the neutron production in s-process environments.

The excitation of the isoscalar giant monopole resonance (ISGMR) in $^{116}$Sn and $^{208}$Pb has been investigated using small-angle (including $0^\circ$) inelastic scattering of 100 MeV/u deuteron and multipole-decomposition analysis (MDA). The extracted strength distributions agree well with those from inelastic scattering of 100 MeV/u $\alpha$ particles. These measurements establish deuteron inelastic scattering at E$_d \sim$ 100 MeV/u as a suitable probe for extraction of the ISGMR strength with MDA, making feasible the investigation of this resonance in radioactive isotopes in inverse kinematics., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures. Using inelastic $\alpha$-scattering at extremely forward angles, including $0^\circ$, the strength distributions of the isoscalar giant monopole resonance (ISGMR) have been measured in the $^{204,206,208}$Pb isotopes in order to examine the proposed mutually enhanced magicity (MEM) effect on the nuclear incompressibility. The MEM effect had been suggested as a likely explanation of the "softness" of nuclear incompressibility observed in the ISGMR measurements in the Sn and Cd isotopes. Our experimental results rule out any manifestation of the MEM effect in nuclear incompressibility and leave the question of the softness of the open-shell nuclei unresolved still., Comment: Accepted for publication in Physics Letters B. The isoscalar giant monopole resonance (ISGMR) in even-A Cd isotopes has been studied by inelastic ${\alpha}$-scattering at 100 MeV/u and at extremely forward angles, including 0deg. The asymmetry term in the nuclear incompressibility extracted from the ISGMR in Cd isotopes is found to be $K_{\tau} = -555 \pm 75$ MeV, confirming the value previously obtained from the Sn isotopes. ISGMR strength has been computed in relativistic RPA using NL3 and FSUGold effective interactions. Both models significantly overestimate the centroids of the ISGMR strength in the Cd isotopes. Combined with other recent theoretical effort, the question of the "softness" of the open-shell nuclei in the tin region remains open still., Comment: Minor changes in text. Electron capture and beta decay play important roles in the evolution of pre-supernovae stars and their eventual core collapse. These rates are normally predicted through shell-model calculations. Experimentally determined strength distributions from charge-exchange reactions are needed to test modern shell-model calculations. We report on the measurement of the Gamow-Teller strength distribution in 58Co from the 58Ni(t,3He) reaction with a secondary triton beam of an intensity of ~10^6 pps at 115 MeV/nucleon and a resolution of \~250 keV. Previous measurements with the 58Ni(n,p) and the 58Ni(d,2He) reactions were inconsistent with each other. Our results support the latter. We also compare the results to predictions of large-scale shell model calculations using the KB3G and GXPF1 interactions and investigate the impact of differences between the various experiments and theories in terms of the weak rates in the stellar environment. Finally, the systematic uncertainties in the normalization of the strength distribution extracted from 58Ni(3He,t) are described and turn out to be non-negligible due to large interferences between the dL=0, dS=1 Gamow-Teller amplitude and the dL=2, dS=1 amplitude., Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures

The Tri$\mu$P facility at KVI is dedicated to provide short lived radioactive isotopes at low kinetic energies to users. It comprised different cooling schemes for a variety of energy ranges, from GeV down to the neV scale. The isotopes are produced using beam of the AGOR cyclotron at KVI. They are separated from the primary beam by a magnetic separator. A crucial part of such a facility is the ability to stop and extract isotopes into a low energy beamline which guides them to the experiment. In particular we are investigating stopping in matter and buffer gases. After the extraction the isotopes can be stored in neutral atoms or ion traps for experiments. Our research includes precision studies of nuclear $\beta$-decay through $\beta$-$\nu$ momentum correlations as well as searches for permanent electric dipole moments in heavy atomic systems like radium. Charge-exchange reactions are an important tool for determining weak-interaction rates. They provide stringent tests for nuclear structure models necessary for modeling astrophysical environments such as neutron stars and core-collapse supernovae. In anticipation of (t,3He) experiments at 115 MeV/nucleon on nuclei of relevance (A~40-120) in the late evolution of stars, it is shown via a study of the 26Mg(t,3He) reaction that this probe is an accurate tool for extracting Gamow-Teller transition strengths. To do so, the data are complemented by results from the 26Mg(3He,t) reaction at 140 MeV/nucleon which allows for a comparison of T=2 analog states excited via the mirror reactions. Extracted Gamow-Teller strengths from 26Mg(t,3He) and 26Mg(3He,t) are compared with those from 26Mg(d,2He) and 26Mg(p,n) studies, respectively. A good correspondence is found, indicating probe-independence of the strength extraction. Furthermore, we test shell-model calculations using the new USD-05B interaction in the sd-model space and show that it reproduces the experimental Gamow-Teller strength distributions well. A second goal of this work is to improve the understanding of the (t,3He) and (3He,t) reaction mechanisms at intermediate energies since detailed studies are scarce. The Distorted-Wave Born Approximation is employed, taking into account the composite structures of the 3He and triton particles. The reaction model provides the means to explain systematic uncertainties at the 10-20% level in the extraction of Gamow-Teller strengths as being due to interference between Gamow-Teller dL=0, dS=1 and dL=2, dS=1 amplitudes that both contribute to transitions from 0+ to 1+ states., Comment: 16 pages, 6 figures

The TRI$\mu$P facility, under construction at KVI, requires the production and separation of short-lived and rare isotopes. Direct reactions, fragmentation and fusion-evaporation reactions in normal and inverse kinematics are foreseen to produce nuclides of interest with a variety of heavy-ion beams from the superconducting cyclotron AGOR. For this purpose, we have designed, constructed and commissioned a versatile magnetic separator that allows efficient injection into an ion catcher, i.e., gas-filled stopper/cooler or thermal ionizer, from which a low energy radioactive beam will be extracted. The separator performance was tested with the production and clean separation of $^{21}$Na ions, where a beam purity of 99.5% could be achieved. The cross section of the ${}^{16}{\rm O}(p,p'){}^{16}{\rm O}(0^-,T=1)$ scattering was measured at a bombarding energy of 295 MeV in the momentum transfer range of $1.0 \mathrm{fm^{-1}}$ $\le$ $q_{\rm c.m.}$ $\le$ $2.1 \mathrm{fm^{-1}}$. The isovector $0^-$ state at $E_x$ = 12.8 MeV is clearly separated from its neighboring states owing to the high energy resolution of about 30 keV. The cross section data were compared with distorted wave impulse approximation (DWIA) calculations employing shell-model wave functions. The observed cross sections around $q_{\rm c.m.}$ $\simeq$ $1.7 {\rm fm^{-1}}$ are significantly larger than predicted by these calculations, suggesting pionic enhancement as a precursor of pion condensation in nuclei. Cross sections and polarization transfer observables in the $^{16}$O$(p,p')$ reactions at 392 MeV were measured at several angles between $\theta_{lab}=$ 0$^\circ$ and 14$^\circ$. The non-spin-flip (${\Delta}S=0$) and spin-flip (${\Delta}S=1$) strengths in transitions to several discrete states and broad resonances in $^{16}$O were extracted using a model-independent method. The giant resonances in the energy region of $E_x=19-$27 MeV were found to be predominantly excited by ${\Delta}L=1$ transitions. The strength distribution of spin-dipole transitions with ${\Delta}S=1$ and ${\Delta}L=1$ were deduced. The obtained distribution was compared with a recent shell model calculation.
