ABC-stacked rhombohedral graphene multilayers exhibit a wide variety of electronic ground states characterized by broken isospin symmetry and superconductivity. Recently, indirect evidence of inter-valley coherent (IVC) order has been reported in rhombohedral trilayer graphene (RTG), with possible implications for the origin of superconductivity. Here, we report the direct visualization of IVC order in RTG using scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy. Tuning the chemical potential through the Van Hove singularity near the edge of the valence band, we observe a cascade of phase transitions associated with the formation of half- and quarter-metal states. IVC phases, distinguished by an enlarged real space unit cell, are directly imaged near both the high- and low-density boundaries of the half-metal phase. At high hole density, we precisely reconstruct the IVC band structure through quasiparticle interference. Intriguingly, the charge density modulations reveal a C3-symmetric incommensurate IVC order that agrees with the recent prediction of an IVC-crystal phase. We consider two-dimensional periodically driven systems of fermions with particle-hole symmetry. Such systems support non-trivial topological phases, including ones that cannot be realized in equilibrium. We show that a space-time defect in the driving Hamiltonian, dubbed a ``time vortex,'' can bind $\pi$ Majorana modes. A time vortex is a point in space around which the phase lag of the Hamiltonian changes by a multiple of $2\pi$. We demonstrate this behavior on a periodically driven version of Kitaev's honeycomb spin model, where $\mathbb{Z}_2$ fluxes and time vortices can realize any combination of $0$ and $\pi$ Majorana modes. We show that a time vortex can be created using Clifford gates, simplifying its realization in near-term quantum simulators., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures

We present protocols for preparing two-dimensional abelian and non-abelian topologically ordered states by employing finite depth unitary circuits composed of long-ranged, simultaneous, and mutually commuting two-qubit gates. Our protocols are motivated by recent proposals for circuits in trapped ion systems, which allow each qubit to participate in multiple gates simultaneously. Our circuits are shown to be optimal, in the sense that the number of two-qubit gates and ancilla qubits scales as $O(L^2)$, where $L$ is the linear size of the system. Examples include the ground states of the toric code, certain Kitaev quantum double models, and string net models. Going beyond two dimensions, we extend our scheme to more general Calderbank-Shor-Steane (CSS) codes. We propose an efficient protocol for preparing low energy states of arbitrary fermionic Hamiltonians on a noisy bosonic quantum simulator. This procedure involves performing adiabatic cooling by coupling the target system with a simulated bath. The bath is periodically monitored in order to extract entropy from the system. By fermionizing the simulated target system and the bath together, we allow individual fermionic excitations of the system to coherently hop to the bath sites. In this way, we achieve a cooling rate linearly proportional to the density of these excitations, despite the fact that they are non-local in terms of the bosonic degrees of freedom of the hardware. In particular, we show that certain topological phases, such as the chiral (non-Abelian) phase of the Kitaev honeycomb model can be prepared efficiently using our protocol. We find that our protocol performs favorably in the presence of noise, making it suitable for execution on near-term quantum devices., Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures

Recent experiments in ABC trilayer graphene detected superconductivity on the border of a phase transition to a symmetry-broken phase. In this work, we use unrestricted Hartree-Fock to study the nature of this phase. We find a close competition between two incommensurate inter-valley coherent (IVC) phases: an IVC crystal where the ordering occurs at multiple wavevectors, and an IVC spiral with a single ordering wavevector. Focusing on one of the regimes where superconductivity is observed experimentally, we find a continuous (or very weakly first order) transition between a half metallic phase to an IVC crystal, followed by a first-order transition into an IVC spiral. Using time-dependent Hartree-Fock, we study the collective mode spectrum in the half-metalic phase. We find a soft inter-valley mode that can mediate superconductivity in a narrow sliver of density near the continuous transition, with a Tc that can reach a few hundreds of mK and a sign-changing s-wave order parameter. The spin stiffness in the half metal phase is found to be surprisingly low, of the order of a few degrees Kelvin.

The coupling between electrons and phonons is one of the fundamental interactions in solids, underpinning a wide range of phenomena such as resistivity, heat conductivity, and superconductivity. However, direct measurements of this coupling for individual phonon modes remains a significant challenge. In this work, we introduce a novel technique for mapping phonon dispersions and electron phonon coupling (EPC) in van der Waals materials. By generalizing the quantum twisting microscope to cryogenic temperatures, we demonstrate its capability to map not only electronic dispersions via elastic momentum-conserving tunnelling, but also phononic dispersions through inelastic momentum-conserving tunnelling. Crucially, the inelastic tunnelling strength provides a direct and quantitative measure of the momentum and mode resolved EPC. We use this technique to measure the phonon spectrum and EPC of twisted bilayer graphene (TBG). Surprisingly, we find that unlike standard acoustic phonons, whose coupling to electrons diminishes as their momentum goes to zero, TBG exhibits a low energy mode whose coupling increases with decreasing twist angle. We show that this unusual coupling arises from the modulation of the inter-layer tunnelling by a layer-antisymmetric 'phason' mode of the moir\'e system. The technique demonstrated here opens the way for probing a large variety of other neutral collective modes that couple to electronic tunnelling, including plasmons, magnons and spinons in quantum materials.

Magnetism typically arises from the effect of exchange interactions on highly localized fermionic wave functions in f- and d-atomic orbitals. In rhombohedral graphene multilayers, in contrast, magnetism -- manifesting as spontaneous polarization into one or more spin and valley flavors[1-7]-originates from fully itinerant electrons near a Van Hove singularity. Here, we show that despite the absence of localized electronic orbitals on the scale of the interparticle separation, rhombohedral graphene bi- and trilayers show thermodynamic signatures typically associated with disordered local magnetic moments. Specifically, while long range valley order vanishes at temperatures of a few Kelvin, thermodynamic characteristics of fluctuating moments, probed via both electronic compressibility[2-4] and exciton sensing measurements[8], survive to temperatures an order of magnitude higher. Measurements of the electronic entropy in this regime reveal a contribution of $\Delta S \approx 1k_B$/charge carrier, onsetting at the Curie temperature, while first order phase transitions show an isospin "Pomeranchuk effect" in which the fluctuating moment phase is entropically favored over the nearby symmetric Fermi liquid[9, 10]. Our results imply that despite the itinerant nature of the electron wave functions, the spin- and valley polarization of individual electrons are decoupled, a phenomenon typically associated with localized moments, as happens, for example, in solid 3He[11]. Transport measurements, surprisingly, show a finite temperature resistance minimum within the fluctuating moment regime, which we attribute to the interplay of fluctuating magnetic moments and electron phonon scattering. Our results highlight the universality of soft isospin modes to two dimensional flat band systems and their possible relevance both to low-temperature ground states and high temperature transport anomalies.

We develop a theory of probing phonon modes of van-der-Waals materials using the quantum twisting microscope. While elastic tunneling dominates the tunneling current at small twist angles, the momentum mismatch between the K-points of tip and sample at large twist angles can only be bridged by inelastic scattering. This allows for probing phonon dispersions along certain lines in reciprocal space by measuring the tunneling current as a function of twist angle and bias voltage. We illustrate this modality of the quantum twisting microscope by developing a systematic theory for graphene-graphene junctions. We show that beyond phonon dispersions, the tunneling current also encodes the strength of electron-phonon couplings. Extracting the coupling strengths for individual phonon modes requires careful consideration of various inelastic tunneling processes. These processes are associated with the intralayer and interlayer electron-phonon couplings and appear at different orders in a perturbative calculation of the tunneling current. We find that the dominant process depends on the particular phonon mode under consideration. Our results inform the quest to understand the origin of superconductivity in twisted bilayer graphene and provide a case study for quantum-twisting-microscope investigations of collective modes., Comment: 22 pages, 8 figures

The properties of a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) in a semiconductor host with two valleys related by an underlying $C_4$ rotational symmetry are studied using Hartree-Fock (HF) and various other many-body approaches. A familiar artifact of the HF approach is a degeneracy between the valley polarized - ``Ising nematic'' - and spin polarized - ferromagnetic - phases, which is inconsistent with recent variational Monte Carlo (VMC) results. Correlation effects, computed either within the random phase approximation (RPA) or the T-matrix approximation, enhance the valley susceptibility relative to the spin susceptibility. Extrapolating the results to finite interaction strength, we find a direct first-order transition from a symmetry-unbroken state to a spin unpolarized Ising nematic fluid with full valley polarization, in qualitative agreement with VMC. The RPA results are also reminiscent of experiments on the corresponding 2DEG in AlAs heterostructures., Comment: 6 + 25 pages, 12 figures

We consider optical response in multi-band, multi-layer two-dimensional superconductors. Within a simple model, we show that linear response to AC gating can detect collective modes of the condensate, such as Leggett and clapping modes. We show how trigonal warping of the superconducting order parameter can help facilitate detection of clapping modes. Taking rhombohedral trilayer graphene as an example, we consider several possible pairing mechanisms and show that all-electronic mechanisms may produce in-gap clapping modes. These modes, if present, should be detectable in the absorption of microwaves applied via the gate electrodes, which are necessary to enable superconductivity in this and many other settings; their detection would constitute strong evidence for unconventional pairing. Lastly, we show that absorption at frequencies above the superconducting gap $2 |\Delta|$ also contains a wealth of information about the gap structure. Strange metal behavior is traditionally associated with an underlying putative quantum critical point at zero temperature. However, in many correlated metals, e.g., high-Tc cuprate superconductors, strange metallicity persists at low temperatures over an extended range of microscopic parameters, suggesting the existence of an underlying quantum critical phase, whose possible physical origins remain poorly understood. Systematic investigations of physical scenarios giving rise to such a critical, non-Fermi liquid (NFL) phase are therefore crucial to better understand this puzzling behavior. In a previous work [Bashan et al. arXiv:2310.07768], we considered a solvable large-N model consisting of itinerant electrons coupled to local two-level systems (TLSs) via spatially random interactions, inspired by the possibility of emergent metallic glassiness due to frustrated competing orders, and found that the system hosts an NFL phase with tunable exponents at intermediate couplings. In this work, we expand our investigation to the following: (i) We study the extent to which this NFL phase is generic by considering various deformations of our theory, including coupling of electrons to multiple operators of the TLSs and arbitrarily directed TLS-fields. We find that the physical picture obtained in Bashan et al. qualitatively persist in a wide region of parameter space, showcasing the robustness of the NFL phase; (ii) We analyze the superconducting instability due to coupling of TLSs to electrons, and find a rich structure, including quantum critical pairing associated with the NFL phase and conventional BCS pairing in the weak and strong coupling limits; (iii) We elaborate on the analysis of Bashan et al., including single-particle, transport and thermodynamic properties., Comment: 20+19 pages, 5+3 figures

We study the effects of quasiperiodicity on the stability of conventional and unconventional superconductors. Quasiperiodicity is modelled using the three-dimensional Aubry-Andre model, a system in which electrons are coupled to a translation-symmetry-breaking potential that is incommensurate with the underlying lattice. Upon increasing the strength of the quasiperiodic potential, the single-particle eigenstates undergo a transition from a ballistic to a diffusive character. Here, we study the instability of the model towards superconductivity. We find that in the ballistic regime, the system is unstable towards both $s$-wave and $p$-wave superconductivity. In contrast, only the conventional $s$-wave instability survives in the intermediate diffusive regime. Our results suggest a version of Anderson's theorem for quasiperiodic systems, relating the normal state dynamics to the stability of conventional and unconventional superconductivity. Recent experiments with nanopatterned thin films revealed an unusual quantum superconductor to metal phase transition (QSMT) with a linear in temperature resistivity. In contrast, most known examples of such transitions and standard theoretical considerations predict a temperature-independent sheet resistance of order $R_Q = \frac{\hbar}{e^2}$. We propose an effective theory of a disordered superconductor which features a QSMT with robust $T$ linear resistivity at the critical point. The crucial ingredient in our model is spatial disorder in the pairing interaction. Such random pairing mirrors the emergent phase disorder seen in a recent mean field study of a microscopic $d$-wave superconductor subject to potential disorder. We also make the prediction that in such systems the diamagnetic susceptibility diverges as $\log\frac{\Lambda}{T}$, which starkly differs from the power law divergence in standard XY transitions., Comment: 10+8 pages, 7 figures

Simulated cooling is a robust method for preparing low-energy states of many-body Hamiltonians on near-term quantum simulators. In such schemes, a subset of the simulator's spins (or qubits) are treated as a "bath," which extracts energy and entropy from the system of interest. However, such protocols are inefficient when applied to systems whose excitations are highly non-local in terms of the microscopic degrees of freedom, such as topological phases of matter; such excitations are difficult to extract by a local coupling to a bath. We explore a route to overcome this obstacle by encoding of the system's degrees of freedom into those of the quantum simulator in a non-local manner. To illustrate the approach, we show how to efficiently cool the ferromagnetic phase of the quantum Ising model, whose excitations are domain walls, via a "gauged cooling" protocol in which the Ising spins are coupled to a $Z_2$ gauge field that simultaneously acts as a reservoir for removing excitations. We show that our protocol can prepare the ground states of the ferromagnetic and paramagnetic phases equally efficiently. The gauged cooling protocol naturally extends to (interacting) fermionic systems, where it is equivalent to cooling by coupling to a fermionic bath via single-fermion hopping.

We study a controlled large-$N$ theory of electrons coupled to dynamical two-level systems (TLSs) via spatially-random interactions. Such a physical situation arises when electrons scatter off low-energy excitations in a metallic glass, such as a charge or stripe glass. Our theory is governed by a non-Gaussian saddle point, which maps to the celebrated spin-boson model. By tuning the coupling strength we find that the model crosses over from a Fermi liquid at weak coupling to an extended region of non-Fermi liquid behavior at strong coupling, and realizes a marginal Fermi liquid at the crossover. Beyond a critical coupling strength, the TLSs freeze and Fermi-liquid behavior is restored. Our results are valid for generic space dimensions $d>1$., Comment: 4.5 + 3 pages, 3 figures

Rhombohedral graphene multilayers provide a clean and highly reproducible platform to explore the emergence of superconductivity and magnetism in a strongly interacting electron system. Here, we use electronic compressibility and local magnetometry to explore the phase diagram of this material class in unprecedented detail. We focus on rhombohedral trilayer in the quarter metal regime, where the electronic ground state is characterized by the occupation of a single spin and valley isospin flavor. Our measurements reveal a subtle competition between valley imbalanced (VI) orbital ferromagnets and intervalley coherent (IVC) states in which electron wave functions in the two momentum space valleys develop a macroscopically coherent relative phase. Contrasting the in-plane spin susceptibility of the IVC and VI phases reveals the influence of graphene's intrinsic spin-orbit coupling, which drives the emergence of a distinct correlated phase with hybrid VI and IVC character. Spin-orbit also suppresses the in-plane magnetic susceptibility of the VI phase, which allows us to extract the spin-orbit coupling strength of $\lambda \approx 50\mu$eV for our hexagonal boron nitride-encapsulated graphene system. We discuss the implications of finite spin-orbit coupling on the spin-triplet superconductors observed in both rhombohedral and twisted graphene multilayers.

The two-dimensional electron gas is of fundamental importance in quantum many-body physics. We study a minimal extension of this model with $C_4$ (as opposed to full rotational) symmetry and an electronic dispersion with two valleys with anisotropic effective masses. Using variational Monte Carlo simulations, we find a broad intermediate range of densities with a metallic valley-polarized, spin-unpolarized ground-state. Our results are of direct relevance to the recently discovered ``nematic'' state in AlAs quantum wells. For the effective mass anisotropy relevant to this system, $m_x/m_y\approx 5.2$, we obtain a transition from an anisotropic metal to a valley-polarized metal at $r_s \approx 12$ (where $r_s$ is the dimensionless Wigner-Seitz radius). At still lower densities, we find a (possibly metastable) valley and spin-polarized state with a reduced electronic anisotropy., Comment: 5+20 pages

A recent experiment on the bulk compound 4Hb-TaS$_2$ reveals an unusual time-reversal symmetry-breaking superconducting state that possesses a magnetic memory not manifest in the normal state. Here we provide a mechanism for this observation by studying the magnetic and electronic properties of 4Hb-TaS$_2$. We discuss the criterion for a small magnetization in the normal state in terms of spin and orbital magnetizations. Based on an analysis of lattice symmetry and Fermi surface structure, we propose that 4Hb-TaS$_2$ realizes superconductivity in the interlayer, equal-spin channel with a gap function whose phase winds along the Fermi surface by an integer multiple of $6\pi$. The enhancement of the magnetization in the superconducting state compared to the normal state can be explained if the state with a gap winding of $6\pi$ is realized, accounting for the observed magnetic memory. The Quantum Hall Effect (QHE) is a prototypical realization of a topological state of matter. It emerges from a subtle interplay between topology, interactions, and disorder. The disorder enables the formation of localized states in the bulk that stabilize the quantum Hall states with respect to the magnetic field and carrier density. Still, the details of the localized states and their contribution to transport remain beyond the reach of most experimental techniques. Here, we describe an extensive study of the bulk's heat conductance. Using a novel 'multi-terminal' short device (on a scale of $10 \mu m$), we separate the longitudinal thermal conductance, $\kappa_{xx}T$ (due to bulk's contribution), from the topological transverse value $\kappa_{xy}T$, by eliminating the contribution of the edge modes. When the magnetic field is tuned away from the conductance plateau center, the localized states in the bulk conduct heat efficiently ($\kappa_{xx}T \propto T$), while the bulk remains electrically insulating. Fractional states in the first excited Landau level, such as the $\nu=7/3$ and $\nu=5/2$, conduct heat throughout the plateau with a finite $\kappa_{xx} T$. We propose a theoretical model that identifies the localized states as the cause of the finite heat conductance, agreeing qualitatively with our experimental findings., Comment: 30 pages 11 figures

Probing the superconducting order parameter symmetry is a crucial step towards understanding the pairing mechanism in unconventional superconductors. Inspired by the recent discoveries of superconductivity in various van der Waals materials, and the availability of the relative twist angle as a continuous tuning knob in these systems, we propose a general setup for probing the order parameter symmetry of two-dimensional superconductors in twisted Josephson junctions. The junction is composed of an anisotropic s-wave superconductor as a probe and another superconductor with an unknown order parameter symmetry. Assuming momentum-resolved tunneling, we investigate signatures of different order parameter symmetries in the twist angle dependence of the critical current, the current-phase relations, and magnetic field dependence. As a concrete example, we study a twisted Josephson junction between NbSe2 and magic angle twisted bilayer graphene., Comment: 15 pages, 5 figures

The lowest order Josephson coupling, $J_1(\theta)\cos(\phi)$, between two d-wave superconductors with phase-difference $\phi$ across the junction vanishes when their relative orientation is rotated by $\theta=\pi/4$. However, in the presence of inhomogeneity, $J_{1}(\mathbf{r})$ is non-zero locally, with a sign that fluctuates in space. We show that such a random $J_1$ generates a global second-harmonic Josephson coupling, $J_2\cos(2\phi)$, with a sign that favors $\phi = \pm \pi/2$, i.e., spontaneous breaking of time reversal symmetry. The magnitude of $J_2$ is substantially enhanced if the spatial correlations of $J_1(\mathbf{r})$ extend over large distances, such as would be expected in the presence of large amplitude twist-angle angle disorder or significant local electronic nematicity. In this work we investigate the ground state of a momentum-confined interacting 2D electron gas, a momentum-space analog of an infinite quantum well. The study is performed by combining analytical results with a numerical exact diagonalization procedure. We find a ferromagnetic ground state near a particular electron density and for a range of effective electron (or hole) masses. We argue that this observation may be relevant to the generalized Stoner ferromagnetism recently observed in multilayer graphene systems. The collective magnon excitations exhibit a linear dispersion, which originates from a diverging spin stiffness., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures + supplemental material

We study the electronic spectral function of a metal in the vicinity of an antiferromagnetic (AFM) quantum critical point, focusing on a situation where the bare bandwidth of the spin fluctuations is significantly smaller than the Fermi energy. In this limit, we identify a range of energies where the fermionic quasiparticles near the "hot spots'' on the Fermi surface are strongly scattered by the quantum critical fluctuations, whereas the damping of the AFM fluctuations by the electrons is negligible. Within a one-loop approximation, there is a parameter range where the $T=0$ spectral function at the hot spots has a "precursor gap'' feature, with a local maximum at a finite frequency. However, the ratio of the bare spin wave velocity to the Fermi velocity required to obtain a precursor gap is probably too small to explain experiments in the electron-doped cuprate superconductors (He et al., Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci 116, 3449 (2019)). At lower frequencies, the Landau damping of the AFM fluctuations becomes important, and the electronic spectral function has the familiar ${\omega}^{-1/2}$ singularity. Our one-loop perturbative results are supported by a numerical Monte Carlo simulation of electrons coupled to an undamped, nearly-critical AFM mode.

Recent scanning tunneling microscopy experiments [K.P. Nuckolls et al., arXiv:2303.00024] have revealed the ubiquity of Kekul\'e charge-density wave order in magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene. Most samples are moderately strained and show `incommensurate Kekul\'e spiral' (IKS) order involving a graphene-scale charge density distortion uniaxially modulated on the scale of the moir\'e superlattice, in accord with theoretical predictions. However, ultra-low strain samples instead show graphene-scale Kekul\'e charge order that is uniform on the moir\'e scale. This order, especially prominent near filling factor $\nu=-2$, is unanticipated by theory which predicts a time-reversal breaking Kekul\'e current order at low strain. We show that including the coupling of moir\'e electrons to graphene-scale optical zone-corner (ZC) phonons stabilizes a uniform Kekul\'e charge ordered state at $|\nu|=2$ with a quantized topological (spin or anomalous Hall) response. Our work clarifies how this phonon-driven selection of electronic order emerges in the strong-coupling regime of moir\'e graphene., Comment: 5+4 pages

We study a long topological Josephson junction with a ferromagnetic strip between two superconductors. The low-energy theory exhibits a non-local in time and space interaction between chiral Majorana fermions, mediated by the magnonic excitations in the ferromagnet. While short ranged interactions turn out to be irrelevant by power counting, we show that sufficiently strong and long-ranged interactions may induce a $\mathbb{Z}_2$-symmetry breaking. This spontaneous breaking leads to a tilting of the magnetization perpendicular to the Majorana propagation direction and the opening of a fermionic gap (Majorana mass). It is analogous to the Peierls instability in the commensurate Fr\"ohlich model and reflects the nontrivial interplay between Majorana modes and magnetization dynamics. Within a Gaussian fluctuation analysis, we estimate critical values for the temporal and spatial non-locality of the interaction, beyond which the symmetry breaking is stable at zero temperature -- despite the effective one-dimensionality of the model. We conclude that non-locality, i.e., the stiffness of the magnetization in space and time, stabilizes the symmetry breaking. In the stabilized regime, we expect the current-phase relation to exhibit an experimentally accessible discontinuous jump. At nonzero temperatures, as usual in the 1D Ising model, the long-range order is destroyed by solitonic excitations, which in our case carry each a Majorana zero mode. Superconductivity (SC) is a ubiquitous feature of graphite allotropes, having been observed in Bernal bilayers[1], rhombohedral trilayers[2], and a wide variety of angle-misaligned multilayers[3-6]. Despite significant differences in the electronic structure across these systems, supporting the graphite layer on a WSe$_2$ substrate has been consistently observed to expand the range of SC in carrier density and temperature[7-10]. Here, we report the observation of two distinct superconducting states (denoted SC$_1$ and SC$_2$) in Bernal bilayer graphene with strong proximity-induced Ising spin-orbit coupling. Quantum oscillations show that while the normal state of SC$_1$ is consistent with the single-particle band structure, SC$_2$ emerges from a nematic normal state with broken rotational symmetry. Both superconductors are robust to in-plane magnetic fields, violating the paramagnetic limit; however, neither reach fields expected for spin-valley locked Ising superconductors. We use our knowledge of the Fermi surface geometry of SC$_1$ to argue that superconductivity is limited by orbital depairing arising from the imperfect layer polarization of the electron wavefunctions. Finally, a comparative analysis of transport and thermodynamic compressibility measurements in SC$_2$ shows that the proximity to the observed isospin phase boundaries, observed in other rhombohedral graphene allotropes, is likely coincidental, constraining theories of unconventional superconducting pairing mechanisms in theses systems.

Determinant Quantum Monte Carlo (DQMC) is a powerful numerical technique to study many-body fermionic systems. In recent years, several classes of sign-free (SF) models have been discovered, where the notorious sign problem can be circumvented. However, it is not clear what are the inherent physical characteristics and limitations of SF models. In particular, which zero-temperature quantum phases of matter are accessible within such models, and which are fundamentally inaccessible? Here, we show that a model belonging to any of the known SF classes within DQMC cannot have a stable Fermi liquid ground state in spatial dimension $d\ge 2$, unless the anti-unitary symmetry that prevents the sign problem is spontaneously broken (for which there are currently no known examples in SF models). For SF models belonging to one of the symmetry classes (where the absence of the sign problem follows from a combination of non-unitary symmetries of the fermionic action), any putative Fermi liquid fixed point generically includes an attractive Cooper-like interaction that destabilizes it. In the recently discovered lower-symmetry classes of SF models, the Fermi surface is generically unstable even at the level of the quadratic action. Our results suggest a fundamental link between Fermi liquids and the fermion sign problem. An electronic solid with itinerant carriers and localized magnetic moments represents a paradigmatic strongly correlated system. The electrical transport properties associated with the itinerant carriers, as they scatter off these local moments, has been scrutinized across a number of materials. Here we analyze the transport characteristics associated with ultra-clean PdCrO$_2$ -- a quasi two-dimensional material consisting of alternating layers of itinerant Pd-electrons and Mott-insulating CrO$_2$ layers -- which shows a pronounced regime of $T-$linear resistivity over a wide-range of intermediate temperatures. By contrasting these observations to the transport properties in a closely related material PdCoO$_2$, where the CoO$_2$ layers are band-insulators, we can rule out the traditional electron-phonon interactions as being responsible for this interesting regime. We propose a previously ignored electron-magnetoelastic interaction between the Pd-electrons, the Cr local-moments and an out-of-plane phonon as the main scattering mechanism that leads to the significant enhancement of resistivity and a $T-$linear regime in PdCrO$_2$ at temperatures far in excess of the magnetic ordering temperature. The layered delafossite metal PdCrO$_2$ is a natural heterostructure of highly conductive Pd layers Kondo coupled to localized spins in the adjacent Mott insulating CrO$_2$ layers. At high temperatures $T$ it has a $T$-linear resistivity which is not seen in the isostructural but non-magnetic PdCoO$_2$. The strength of the Kondo coupling is known, as-grown crystals are extremely high purity and the Fermi surface is both very simple and experimentally known. It is therefore an ideal material platform in which to investigate 'Planckian metal' physics. We do this by means of controlled introduction of point disorder, measurement of the thermal conductivity and Lorenz ratio and studying the sources of its high temperature entropy. The $T$-linear resistivity is seen to be due mainly to elastic scattering and to arise from a sum of several scattering mechanisms. Remarkably, this sum leads to a scattering rate within 10$\%$ of the Planckian value of $k_BT/$$\hbar$.

We analyze free energy and specific heat for fermions interacting with gapless bosons at a quantum-critical point (QCP) in a metal. We use the Luttinger-Ward-Eliashberg formula for the free energy in the normal state, which includes contributions from bosons, fermions, and their interaction, all expressed via fully dressed fermionic and bosonic propagators. The sum of the last two contributions is the free energy $F_\gamma$ of an effective low-energy model of fermions with boson-mediated dynamical 4-fermion interaction $V (\Omega_m) \propto 1/|\Omega_m|^\gamma$ (the $\gamma-$model). This purely electronic model has been used to analyze the interplay between non-Fermi liquid (non-FL) behavior and pairing near a QCP, which are both independent of the upper energy cutoff $\Lambda$. However, the specific heat $C_\gamma (T)$, obtained from $F_\gamma$, does depend on $\Lambda$. We argue that this dependence is spurious and cancels out, once we include the contribution from bosons. We compare our $C(T)$ with the one obtained within the $\gamma-$model using recently proposed regularization of $F_\gamma$. We argue that for $\gamma <1$, the full $C(T)$ and the regularized $C_\gamma (T)$ differ by a $\gamma-$dependent prefactor, while for $\gamma >1$, the full $C(T)$ is the sum of $ C_\gamma (T)$ and the specific heat of free bosons with fully dressed mass. For these $\gamma$, $C_\gamma (T)$ is negative. The authors of Ref. [1] argued that a negative $ C_\gamma (T)$ implies that the normal state becomes unstable at some distance to a QCP. In our calculation, both terms in $C(T)$ come from the same source, and $ C_\gamma (T)$ is smaller as long as vertex corrections can be safely neglected. We then argue that the normal state remains stable even at a QCP.

Motivated by the recent discoveries of superconductivity in bilayer and trilayer graphene, we theoretically investigate superconductivity and other interaction-driven phases in multilayer graphene stacks. To this end, we study the density of states of multilayer graphene with up to four layers at the single-particle band structure level in the presence of a transverse electric field. Among the considered structures, tetralayer graphene with rhombohedral (ABCA) stacking reaches the highest density of states. We study the phases that can arise in ABCA graphene by tuning the carrier density and transverse electric field. For a broad region of the tuning parameters, the presence of strong Coulomb repulsion leads to a spontaneous spin and valley symmetry breaking via Stoner transitions. Using a model that incorporates the spontaneous spin and valley polarization, we explore the Kohn-Luttinger mechanism for superconductivity driven by repulsive Coulomb interactions. We find that the strongest superconducting instability is in the $p-$wave channel, and occurs in proximity to the onset of Stoner transitions. Interestingly, we find a range of densities and transverse electric fields where superconductivity develops out of a strongly corrugated, singly-connected Fermi surface in each valley, leading to a topologically non-trivial chiral $p+ip$ superconducting state with an even number of co-propagating chiral Majorana edge modes. A variety of low-temperature, normal-state properties of optimally and overdoped cuprate superconductors, including the DC and optical transport responses, are sufficiently anomalous that they might seem to be inconsistent with any quasiparticle description. However, we show by explicit construction that the most salient phenomena can be accounted for in a system with localized "strange scatterers" embedded into a Fermi liquid with a conventional quasiparticle description. Such scatterers could originate from "two-level systems" associated with an electronic glassy state with short-range charge-order correlations., Comment: Aspects of the proposed model which we had previously identified as "unnatural" appear to us now to be impossible to realize from any physically plausible microscopic origin. The Wiedemann-Franz (WF) law, stating that the Lorenz ratio $L = \kappa/(T\sigma)$ between the thermal and electrical conductivities in a metal approaches a universal constant $L_0=\pi^2 k_B^2/ (3 e^2)$ at low temperatures, is often interpreted as a signature of fermionic Landau quasi-particles. In contrast, we show that various models of weakly disordered non-Fermi liquids also obey the WF law at $T \to 0$. Instead, we propose using the leading low-temperature correction to the WF law, $L(T)-L_0$ (proportional to the inelastic scattering rate), to distinguish different types of strange metals. As an example, we demonstrate that in a solvable model of a marginal Fermi liquid, $L(T)-L_0\propto -T$. Using the quantum Boltzmann equation (QBE) approach, we find analogous behavior in a class of marginal- and non-Fermi liquids with a weakly momentum-dependent inelastic scattering. In contrast, in a Fermi liquid, $L(T)-L_0$ is proportional to $-T^2$. This holds even when the resistivity grows linearly with $T$, due to $T-$linear quasi-elastic scattering (as in the case of electron-phonon scattering at temperatures above the Debye frequency). Finally, by exploiting the QBE approach, we demonstrate that the transverse Lorenz ratio, $L_{xy} = \kappa_{xy}/(T\sigma_{xy})$, exhibits the same behavior., Comment: 6 + 10 pages, published version includes a generalization of the criterion to the transverse Lorenz ratio

We propose a simple, robust protocol to prepare a low-energy state of an arbitrary Hamiltonian on a quantum computer or programmable quantum simulator. The protocol is inspired by the adiabatic demagnetization technique, used to cool solid-state systems to extremely low temperatures. A fraction of the qubits (or spins) is used to model a spin bath that is coupled to the system. By an adiabatic ramp down of a simulated Zeeman field acting on the bath spins, energy and entropy are extracted from the system. The bath spins are then measured and reset to the polarized state, and the process is repeated until convergence to a low-energy steady state is achieved. We demonstrate the protocol via application to the quantum Ising model. We study the protocol's performance in the presence of noise and show how the information from the measurement of the bath spins can be used to monitor the cooling process. The performance of the algorithm depends on the nature of the excitations of the system; systems with non-local (topological) excitations are more difficult to cool than those with local excitations. We study multi-valley electron gases in the low density ($r_s \gg 1$) limit. Here the ground-state is always a Wigner crystal (WC), with additional pseudo-spin order where the pseudo-spins are related to valley occupancies. Depending on the symmetries of the host semiconductor and the values of the parameters such as the anisotropy of the effective mass tensors, we find a striped or chiral pseudo-spin antiferromagnet, or a time-reversal symmetry breaking orbital loop-current ordered pseudo-spin ferromagnet. Our theory applies to the recently-discovered WC states in AlAs and in mono and bilayer transition metal dichalcogenides. We investigate competing insulating phases in nearly metallic zigzag carbon nanotubes, under conditions where an applied magnetic flux approximately closes the single particle gap in one valley. Recent experiments have shown that an energy gap persists throughout magnetic field sweeps where the single-particle picture predicts that the gap should close and reopen. Using a bosonic low-energy effective theory to describe the interplay between electron-electron interactions, spin-orbit coupling, and magnetic field, we obtain a phase diagram consisting of several competing insulating phases that can form in the vicinity of the single-particle gap closing point. We characterize these phases in terms of spin-resolved charge polarization densities, each of which can independently take one of two possible values consistent with the mirror symmetry of the system, or can take an intermediate value through a spontaneous mirror symmetry breaking transition. In the mirror symmetry breaking phase, adiabatic changes of the orbital magnetic flux drive charge and spin currents along the nanotube. We discuss the relevance of these results to recent and future experiments.

Many seemingly contradictory experimental findings concerning the superconducting state in Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ can be accounted for on the basis of a conjectured accidental degeneracy between two patterns of pairing that are unrelated to each other under the $(D_{4h})$ symmetry of the crystal: a $d_{x^2-y^2}$-wave $(B_{1g})$ and a $g_{xy(x^2-y^2)}$-wave $(A_{2g})$ superconducting state. In this paper, we propose a generic multi-band model in which the $g$-wave pairing involving the $xz$ and $yz$ orbitals arises from second-nearest-neighbor interactions. Even if time-reversal symmetry is broken in a $d+ig$ state, such a superconductor remains gapless with a Bogoliubov Fermi surface that approximates a (vertical) line node. The model gives rise to a strain-dependent splitting between the critical temperature $T_c$ and the time-reversal symmetry-breaking temperature $T_\text{trsb}$ that is qualitatively similar to some of the experimental observations in Sr$_2$RuO$_4$., Comment: 21 pages (including Appendix), 4 figures

The invention of scanning probe microscopy has revolutionized the way electronic phenomena are visualized. While present-day probes can access a variety of electronic properties at a single location in space, a scanning microscope that can directly probe the quantum mechanical existence of an electron at multiple locations would provide direct access to key quantum properties of electronic systems, so far unreachable. Here, we demonstrate a conceptually new type of scanning probe microscope - the Quantum Twisting Microscope (QTM) - capable of performing local interference experiments at its tip. The QTM is based on a unique van-der-Waals tip, allowing the creation of pristine 2D junctions, which provide a multitude of coherently-interfering paths for an electron to tunnel into a sample. With the addition of a continuously scanned twist angle between the tip and sample, this microscope probes electrons in momentum space similar to the way a scanning tunneling microscope probes electrons in real space. Through a series of experiments, we demonstrate room temperature quantum coherence at the tip, study the twist angle evolution of twisted bilayer graphene, directly image the energy bands of monolayer and twisted bilayer graphene, and finally, apply large local pressures while visualizing the evolution of the flat energy bands of the latter. The QTM opens the way for novel classes of experiments on quantum materials.

Doped Mott insulators exhibit some of the most intriguing quantum phases of matter, including quantum spin-liquids, unconventional superconductors, and non-Fermi liquid metals. Such phases often arise when itinerant electrons are close to a Mott insulating state, and thus experience strong spatial correlations. Proximity between different layers of van der Waals heterostructures naturally realizes a platform for experimentally studying the relationship between localized, correlated electrons and itinerant electrons. Here, we explore this relationship by studying the magnetic landscape of 4Hb-TaS2, which realizes an alternate stack of a candidate spin liquid and a superconductor. We report on a spontaneous vortex phase whose vortex density can be trained in the normal state. We show that time reversal symmetry is broken above Tc, indicating the presence of a magnetic phase independent of the superconductor. Strikingly, this phase does not generate detectable magnetic signals. We use scanning superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) microscopy to show that it is incompatible with ferromagnetic ordering. The discovery of this new form of hidden magnetism illustrates how combining superconductivity with a strongly correlated system can lead to new, unexpected physics.

Predicting the fate of an interacting system in the limit where the electronic bandwidth is quenched is often highly non-trivial. The complex interplay between interactions and quantum fluctuations driven by the band geometry can drive competition between various ground states, such as charge density wave order and superconductivity. In this work, we study an electronic model of topologically-trivial flat bands with a continuously tunable Fubini-Study metric in the presence of on-site attraction and nearest-neighbor repulsion, using numerically exact quantum Monte Carlo simulations. By varying the electron filling and the minimal spatial extent of the localized flat-band Wannier wavefunctions, we obtain a number of intertwined orders. These include a phase with coexisting charge density wave (CDW) order and superconductivity, i.e., a supersolid. In spite of the non-perturbative nature of the problem, we identify an analytically tractable limit associated with a 'small' spatial extent of the Wannier functions and derive a low-energy effective Hamiltonian that can well describe our numerical results. An intriguing regime of universal charge transport at high entropy density has been proposed for periodically driven interacting one-dimensional systems with Bloch bands separated by a large single-particle band gap. For weak interactions, a simple picture based on well-defined Floquet quasiparticles suggests that the system should host a quasisteady state current that depends only on the populations of the system's Floquet-Bloch bands and their associated quasienergy winding numbers. Here we show that such topological transport persists into the strongly interacting regime where the single-particle lifetime becomes shorter than the drive period. Analytically, we show that the value of the current is insensitive to interaction-induced band renormalizations and lifetime broadening when certain conditions are met by the system's non-equilibrium distribution function. We show that these conditions correspond to a quasisteady state. We support these predictions through numerical simulation of a system of strongly interacting fermions in a periodically-modulated chain of Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev dots. Proximity-induced superconductivity in fractional quantum Hall edges is a prerequisite to proposed realizations of parafermion zero-modes. A recent experimental work [G\"{u}l et al., Phys. Rev. X 12, 021057 (2022)] provided evidence for such coupling, in the form of a crossed Andreev reflection signal, in which electrons enter a superconductor from one chiral mode and are reflected as holes to another, counter-propagating chiral mode. Remarkably, while the probability for crossed Andreev reflection was small, it was stronger for $\nu=1/3$ fractional quantum Hall edges than for integer ones. We theoretically explain these findings, including the relative strengths of the signals in the two cases and their qualitatively different temperature dependencies. An essential part of our model is the coupling of the edge modes to normal states in the cores of Abrikosov vortices induced by the magnetic field, which provide a fermionic bath. We find that the stronger crossed Andreev reflection in the fractional case originates from the suppression of electronic tunneling between the fermionic bath and the fractional quantum Hall edges. Our theory shows that the mere observation of crossed Andreev reflection signal does not necessarily imply the presence of localized parafermion zero-modes, and suggests ways to identify their presence from the behavior of this signal in the low temperature regime., Comment: 5+11 pages, 4+1 figures. Charge carriers in magic angle graphene come in eight flavors described by a combination of their spin, valley, and sublattice polarizations. When the inversion and time reversal symmetries are broken by the substrate or by strong interactions, the degeneracy of the flavors can be lifted and their corresponding bands can be filled sequentially. Due to their non-trivial band topology and Berry curvature, each of the bands is classified by a topological Chern number, leading to the quantum anomalous Hall and Chern insulator states at integer fillings $\nu$ of the bands. It has been recently predicted, however, that depending on the local atomic-scale arrangements of the graphene and the encapsulating hBN lattices, rather than being a global topological invariant, the Chern number C may become position dependent, altering transport and magnetic properties of the itinerant electrons. Using a SQUID-on-tip, we directly image the nanoscale Berry-curvature-induced equilibrium orbital magnetism, the polarity of which is governed by the local Chern number, and detect its two constituent components associated with the drift and the self-rotation of the electronic wave packets. At $\nu=1$, we observe local zero-field valley-polarized Chern insulators forming a mosaic of microscopic patches of C=-1, 0, or 1, governed by the local sublattice polarization, consistent with predictions. Upon further filling, we find a first-order phase transition due to recondensation of electrons from valley K to K', which leads to irreversible flips of the local Chern number and the magnetization, and to the formation of valley domain walls giving rise to hysteretic global anomalous Hall resistance. Three symmetries prevent a twisted bilayer of graphene from developing an in-plane spontaneous magnetization in the absence of a magnetic field - time reversal symmetry, $C_2$ symmetry to $\pi$ rotation and $C_3$ symmetry to $2\pi/3$ rotation. In contrast, there are experimental and theoretical indications that, at certain electron densities, time reversal and $C_2$ symmetries are broken spontaneously, while the $C_3$ symmetry is often broken due to strain. We show that in-plane orbital magnetization is a very sensitive probe to the simultaneous breaking of these three symmetries, exhibiting surprisingly large values (of the order of one Bohr magneton per moir\'{e} unit cell) for valley polarized states at rather small values of heterostrain. We attribute these large values to the large magnitude of the characteristic magnetization of individual Bloch states, which we find to reflect the fast Dirac velocity of single layer graphene, rather than the slow velocity of the twisted bilayer. These large values are forced to mutually cancel in valley-symmetric states, but the cancellation does not occur in valley-polarized states. In one-dimensional topological superconductors driven periodically with the frequency $\omega$, two types of topological edge modes may appear, the well-known Majorana zero mode and a Floquet Majorana mode located at the quasi-energy $\hbar \omega/2$. We investigate two Josephson-coupled topological quantum wires in the presence of Coulomb interactions, forming a so-called Majorana box qubit. An oscillating gate voltage can induce Floquet Majorana modes in both wires. This allows encoding 3 qubits in a sector with fixed electron parity. If such a system is prepared by increasing the amplitude of oscillations adiabatically, it is inherently unstable as interactions resonantly create quasi particles. This can be avoided by using instead a protocol where the oscillation frequency is increased slowly. Superconductivity was recently discovered in rhombohedral trilayer graphene (RTG) in the absence of a moir\'e potential. Superconductivity is observed proximate to a metallic state with reduced isospin symmetry, but it remains unknown whether this is a coincidence or a key ingredient for superconductivity. Using a Hartree-Fock analysis and constraints from experiments, we argue that the symmetry breaking is inter-valley coherent (IVC) in nature. We evaluate IVC fluctuations as a possible pairing glue, and find that they lead to chiral unconventional superconductivity when the fluctuations are strong. We further elucidate how the inter-valley Hund's coupling determines the spin-structure of the IVC ground state and breaks the degeneracy between spin-singlet and triplet superconductivity. Remarkably, if the normal state is spin-unpolarized, we find that a ferromagnetic Hund's coupling favors spin-singlet superconductivity, in agreement with experiments. We show that in a two-dimensional electron gas with an annular Fermi surface, long-range Coulomb interactions can lead to unconventional superconductivity by the Kohn-Luttinger mechanism. Superconductivity is strongly enhanced when the inner and outer Fermi surfaces are close to each other. The most prevalent state has chiral $p$-wave symmetry, but $d$-wave and extended $s$-wave pairing are also possible. We discuss these results in the context of rhombohedral trilayer graphene, where superconductivity was recently discovered in regimes where the normal state has an annular Fermi surface. Using realistic parameters, our mechanism can account for the order of magnitude of $T_c$, as well as its trends as a function of electron density and perpendicular displacement field.
