Abstract

This article studies the discoid Didacna sp. shell beads discovered at Kaylu, a Middle Holocene burial site located in Southern Turkmenistan. Microscopic, morphometric, spectrometric, and SEM analyses were carried out on the material to identify how the beads were manufactured and used. New radiocarbon dating and bioanthropological data to age and sex the two skeletons discovered in the burials are provided. A regional synthesis shows that personal ornaments from the Caspian region were diversified through time and that a stylistic shift between the last foragers and the first farmers occurred. We also observed strong correspondences between the personal ornaments documented in the northern, eastern, and western Caspian Sea during the Neolithic, with no evidence of similar symbolic production in Northern Iran. We propose that a northern route may have allowed the diffusion of common ornamental traditions in the Caspian region to the exclusion of the southern Caspian. Alternatively, discontinuities in material culture diffusion in coastal areas could be evidence of maritime voyaging. Seafaring may have granted the fast and spatially erratic diffusion of specific bead types, people, information, knowledge, and symbols from both sides of the Caspian Sea, by long maritime voyages or by leapfrog diffusion during the Neolithic.

Abstract

The paper presents new data on the dating and paleogeography of the Sholma I site, which has been studied by the authors since the early 2000s on the Tsivil River in Chuvashia. Two AMS dates obtained from horse bones from the 2017 excavation: 10838-10717 Cal BC (95,4%) (UOC-8154) и 11131-10846 Cal BC (95,4%) (UOC-8155) confirmed the authors ' opinion expressed in 2009 that the site of the final Paleolithic functioned in the natural conditions of the interstadial warming of the Allerød at the end of the ice Age. Results of a soil study of samples in 2017, in particular, analyzes for the content of gross phosphorus and microbiomorphs carried out by A. A. Golyeva are highlighted. Analogies to the features of the blade stone industry and trapezoid inserts of throwing weapons in the sites of the Pleistocene and Holocene boundary are revealed. As a result, the authors have outlined two possible directions of communication of specialized hunters who came to the Middle Volga region with a characteristic set of combat weapons in the conditions of interstadial warming. It could be south-east and south-west directions. The south-eastern one is represented by complexes with trapezia of the lower layers of the Shiderty 3 site in north-eastern Kazakhstan and the Gora Mayak settlement in the Samara trans-Volga region, and the south-western one – by the sites with trapezia and other forms of inserts that existed during Allerød in the valleys of the Seversky Donets and the Middle Don.

Abstract

The article is aimed at the publication of new materials from the Bolshaya Tayaba burial ground of the Bolgar archaeological culture of excavations in 2018, as well as the analysis of materials from the burial ground obtained at excavations in 1948 (A.P. Smirnov) and 1984 (V.F. Kakhovsky). The studied attributes suggest that the Muslim burial rite was predominant, but deviations from the orthodox Muslim posture, together with the absence of iron nails and staples for nail fastening, very characteristic of the Bolgars of the second half of the pre-Mongol period, allow to preliminarily narrow the dating of the necropolis to the 10th–11th centuries – the first half of the pre-Mongol period. A comparative analysis of the Bolshaya Tayaba series of skulls reflects the general aspects of the race genesis of the Volga Bolgars. It is based on wide miscegenation processes which occurred between the “local” Kama-Ural population (mainly carriers of the Sub-Ural type) and the Bolgarian or ethnically similar (mainly carriers of the broader-faced morphocomplex).

Abstract

Western Eurasia witnessed several large-scale human migrations during the Holocene1,2,3,4,5. Here, to investigate the cross-continental effects of these migrations, we shotgun-sequenced 317 genomes—mainly from the Mesolithic and Neolithic periods—from across northern and western Eurasia. These were imputed alongside published data to obtain diploid genotypes from more than 1,600 ancient humans. Our analyses revealed a ‘great divide’ genomic boundary extending from the Black Sea to the Baltic. Mesolithic hunter-gatherers were highly genetically differentiated east and west of this zone, and the effect of the neolithization was equally disparate. Large-scale ancestry shifts occurred in the west as farming was introduced, including near-total replacement of hunter-gatherers in many areas, whereas no substantial ancestry shifts happened east of the zone during the same period. Similarly, relatedness decreased in the west from the Neolithic transition onwards, whereas, east of the Urals, relatedness remained high until around 4,000 BP, consistent with the persistence of localized groups of hunter-gatherers. The boundary dissolved when Yamnaya-related ancestry spread across western Eurasia around 5,000 BP, resulting in a second major turnover that reached most parts of Europe within a 1,000-year span. The genetic origin and fate of the Yamnaya have remained elusive, but we show that hunter-gatherers from the Middle Don region contributed ancestry to them. Yamnaya groups later admixed with individuals associated with the Globular Amphora culture before expanding into Europe. Similar turnovers occurred in western Siberia, where we report new genomic data from a ‘Neolithic steppe’ cline spanning the Siberian forest steppe to Lake Baikal. These prehistoric migrations had profound and lasting effects on the genetic diversity of Eurasian populations.

Abstract

The paper features the results of archaeological and paleontological research in the left bank of the Kuibyshev reservoir, at the mouth of the Aktai River (Republic of Tatarstan). Bones and teeth of fossil mammals (223 finds) were collected under the cliff of the reservoir for 300 m. The following species were identified: mammoth, woolly rhinoceros, bison, tur, horse, reindeer, elk, fox, marmot etc., which may belong to the Upper Pleistocene or Khazar faunal complexes. Also the bones of the limb of a large horse were collected, which were identified as a horse of Mosbach of the middle Neo-Pleistocene Singil’ faunal complex existed in the Volga region about 400 thousand years ago. Upper incisor of a giant beaver and the large jaws of a Pleistocene wild boar were also found at the Comintern site and were probably attribute to Singil’ fauna. At the same time, the authors collected 39 artifacts from flint and one from quartzite, belonging to the Ust’-Kamaskaya culture of the terminal Paleolithic. Of particular importance were two localities fixed by the authors in stratified sections – flint flake and rhinoceros limb bone, which lay within the buried soil formed during the warming period of the Middle Valdai (MIS-3).

Abstract

The monograph is dedicated to the study of the Stone Age sites of the Chuvash Volga region conducted under the supervision or with the participation of the author in the 1990s – early 2000s. New materials from more than 50 sites related to the Final Paleolithic, Mesolithic, Neolithic and Eneolithic are introduced into scientific discourse. The author reveals the main methodological approaches in the description of complex multilayer and decaying monuments, and presents the history of field studies of the Stone Age sites in the Chuvash Volga Region. Based on an analysis of paleogeographic data and systematization of the finds of the Quaternary fauna and deposits of stone raw materials, palaeoecological conclusions were drawn regarding the natural environment of the ancient population. The monograph summarizes the results of studies at the reference Stone Age sites in the region and addresses the issues of their chronology and cultural affiliation. The author suggests a scheme of the dynamics of cultural and chronological processes which occurred in the Chuvash Volga Region during the initial stages of the Primeval period.

Abstract

Horses revolutionized human history with fast mobility1. However, the timeline between their domestication and their widespread integration as a means of transport remains contentious2–4. Here we assemble a collection of 475 ancient horse genomes to assess the period when these animals were first reshaped by human agency in Eurasia. We find that reproductive control of the modern domestic lineage emerged around 2200 bce, through close-kin mating and shortened generation times. Reproductive control emerged following a severe domestication bottleneck starting no earlier than approximately 2700 bce, and coincided with a sudden expansion across Eurasia that ultimately resulted in the replacement of nearly every local horse lineage. This expansion marked the rise of widespread horse-based mobility in human history, which refutes the commonly held narrative of large horse herds accompanying the massive migration of steppe peoples across Europe around 3000 bceand earlier3,5. Finally, we detect significantly shortened generation times at Botai around 3500 bce, a settlement from central Asia associated with corrals and a subsistence economy centred on horses6,7. This supports local horse husbandry before the rise of modern domestic bloodlines.

Abstract

Fortification of recipes for products containing only refined raw materials, such as ice cream wafer cups, is a modern trend for such products. The use of soy okara in wet and dry form for these purposes allows you to unlock the potential of this raw material as an improver in the quality of wafer products. In the cup recipe, soy okara was added instead of flour dry matter in the amount of 10–30% in increments of 5%. In the wafer dough the mass fraction of moisture and spreadability were determined, in finished products - the mass fraction of moisture and wettability. It has been established that the use of wet and dry soy okara instead of the dry matter of flour in the formulations of wafer cups for ice cream allows increasing the moisture content of the dough by 2.3–4.9% and 3.6–8.8% and reducing its spreadability by 2–13 mm and 2–7 mm, respectively. In finished wafer cups, the introduction of wet and dry soy okara contributes to an increase in the mass fraction of moisture by 0.1 - 0.4% and 0.1 - 0.9%, a decrease in wetness by 2 - 22% and 2 - 15%, respectively, compared with the control sample. Rational dosage was taken 15% of dry soy okara and 20% dry soy okara instead of flour dry matter in the wafer cup recipe. At the same time, the wettability of finished products is reduced by 5–6%, which will positively affect the consumer properties of finished products when stored with ice cream. In experimental products, the amount of carbohydrates decreases by 4.9 - 5.9%, cellulose - increases by 78 and 87 times, calcium - by 1.5-1.8 times, the energy value decreases by 1.4 - 1.7%, and the biological value increases by 2.9 - 3.4% compared with control sample.

Abstract

The paper deals with the investigation results of the Beganchik site (island) conducted by the authors on the left bank of the Kuybyshev reservoir, the mouth of the Aktai river (Republic of Tatarstan). The stages of the site study are presented. Functional and morphological analysis of the obtained stone artifacts (439 items) of the Ust-Kamskaya culture has been carried out. It was succeeded to find out the bone of a fossil horse lying in situ and to establish its separate stratigraphic position in relation to a cultural layer. The species definition of the bones of large mammals collected on the shallows of the island (80 specimens) showed their belonging to the Mammoth fauna of the Pleistocene (mammoth, woolly rhinoceros, musk ox, horse, bison, etc.). The authors conclude that this paleo-faunal location probably was not connected to the everyday activities of the Final Palaeolithic inhabitants of the Ust-Kamskaya site-workshop.

Abstract

The article features a comprehensive assessment of monuments dating back to the Final Paleolithic and Mesolithic periods located in the Chuvash Volga Region: topography, description of the structural aspects of studied dwellings, characteristics of the stone industry, bone articles, etc. All the described sites have deteriorated to a certain degree, and others have been lost completely. The author analyses all the available archaeological and natural scientific information, which suggests the cultural nature of the monuments. Sholma 1 site was presumably populated by wild horse hunters and related to the process of migration from the Forest-Steppe Area of the Lower Volga Region in the Final Paleolithic period. Monuments of the Mesolithic period located in the Chuvash Volga Region are linked by the author and other researchers to the cultural group of monuments with Post-Swiderian arrowheads and the Russko-Lugovskaya culture recently identified in the Mari Volga Region.

Abstract

Modern humans have populated Europe for more than 45,000 years1,2. Our knowledge of the genetic relatedness and structure of ancient hunter-gatherers is however limited, owing to the scarceness and poor molecular preservation of human remains from that period3. Here we analyse 356 ancient hunter-gatherer genomes, including new genomic data for 116 individuals from 14 countries in western and central Eurasia, spanning between 35,000 and 5,000 years ago. We identify a genetic ancestry profile in individuals associated with Upper Palaeolithic Gravettian assemblages from western Europe that is distinct from contemporaneous groups related to this archaeological culture in central and southern Europe4, but resembles that of preceding individuals associated with the Aurignacian culture. This ancestry profile survived during the Last Glacial Maximum (25,000 to 19,000 years ago) in human populations from southwestern Europe associated with the Solutrean culture, and with the following Magdalenian culture that re-expanded northeastward after the Last Glacial Maximum. Conversely, we reveal a genetic turnover in southern Europe suggesting a local replacement of human groups around the time of the Last Glacial Maximum, accompanied by a north-to-south dispersal of populations associated with the Epigravettian culture. From at least 14,000 years ago, an ancestry related to this culture spread from the south across the rest of Europe, largely replacing the Magdalenian-associated gene pool. After a period of limited admixture that spanned the beginning of the Mesolithic, we find genetic interactions between western and eastern European hunter-gatherers, who were also characterized by marked differences in phenotypically relevant variants.

Abstract

Spelt is a valuable crop, known for a long time, but little used currently. The increased interest in it is explained by the great potential of this crop, which lies in its rich chemical composition, and the possibility of using it as a source of alternative raw material in the baking industry. The possibility of using crushed spelt grain (spelt groats) in the technology of wheat bread with increased nutritional value and functional orientation is considered. A rational way of soaking spelt groats has been determined. The influence of spelt groats on the properties of the dough and quality indicators of wheat bread has been studied. A rational dosage of spelt groats has been determined, the use of which makes it possible to obtain bakery products that are as close as possible to the control sample in their physical and chemical parameters.

Abstract

The article examines main aspects of building threedimensional (3d) models of agricultural parcels of land on the example of generation of digital models of the experimental farm fields. Features and characteristics of the 3d field models building are given according to the results of the application of photogrammetry methods using a UAV (quadcopter) to obtain a heightmap of the investigated areas to compare it with the change in the density of the GSM signal coverage. The examples of digital terrain models (DTMs) obtained at different stages of the processing are given, the issues of using ready-made models for further analytical research on the example of a heightmap transformation for tracking and predicting negative processes, are considered.

Abstract

The paper presents the results of research aimed at creating a flour polycomposite mixture for bread with dry milk whey and dry rye fermented malt. Leading manufacturers of flour polycomposite mixtures offer products with similar chemical composition. Therefore, it is urgent to expand the range of new products with a balanced composition, which makes it possible to obtain bakery products of consistently high quality. By the methods of mathematical planning of the experiment using the sequential simplex method, the composition of the flour mixture was established, including: rye-wheat flour (60:40) 93.5%, dry fermented rye malt 3.75, dry milk whey 2.75%. The analysis of finished products was carried out in terms of porosity and specific volume. The content of physiologically active substances in the finished bread was carried out by the calculation method. Bread made from a mixture of rye and wheat flour without additives was used as a control sample. Bread made from an optimal flour mixture has the best physical and chemical characteristics: specific volume 2.18 g / cm3, porosity 70.1%. The content of such minerals as Ca, Mg and P in bread increased to 1.7, -4.5 times, essential amino acids to 5.2%, and the amino acid rate increased to 1.018.6% compared to with control. At the same time, the content of the main nutrients (protein, fat and carbohydrates) in the product from the flour mixture is close to the control sample, and the energy value increased by 3.42 kcal.

Abstract

The review offers a positive evaluation of V.V. Nikitin’s monograph, where he summarizes findings of his long-term studies into the Neolithic Pit-Comb Ware ceramic tradition in Mari-Kazan Volga region. The reviewed monograph generalizes topographic and planigraphic features of sites and structures and provides detailed characteristics of the stone inventory and ceramics. These data, also helped by the most recent developments in radiocarbon dating, are then used to consider the cultural and chronological attribution of the sites and help identifying stages in their development. A special feature of the monograph is a corpus of all studied sites.
