Abstract

This article provides the complete description of results from the Phase I data set of the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory (SNO). The Phase I data set is based on a 0.65 kt-year exposure of heavy water to the solar 8B neutrino flux. Included here are details of the SNO physics and detector model, evaluations of systematic uncertainties, and estimates of backgrounds. Also discussed are SNO's approach to statistical extraction of the signals from the three neutrino reactions (charged current, neutral current, and elastic scattering) and the results of a search for a day-night asymmetry in the ?e flux. Under the assumption that the 8B spectrum is undistorted, the measurements from this phase yield a solar ?e flux of ?(?e) = 1.76+0.05?0.05(stat.)+0.09?0.09 (syst.) x 106 cm?2 s?1, and a non-?e component ?(? mu) = 3.41+0.45?0.45(stat.)+0.48?0.45 (syst.) x 106 cm?2 s?1. The sum of these components provides a total flux in excellent agreement with the predictions of Standard Solar Models. The day-night asymmetry in the ?e flux is found to be Ae = 7.0 +- 4.9 (stat.)+1.3?1.2 percent (sys.), when the asymmetry in the total flux is constrained to be zero.

Abstract

The Ulysses experimental program termed Cosmic Ray and Solar Particle Investigation (COSPIN) is described, with special attention given to the scientific objectives of the COSPIN, the measurements performed, the initial postlaunch results, and the characteristics of the individual COSPIN instruments. The instrument package of the COSPIN experiment includes the Low Energy Telescope, the High Energy Telescope, the High-Flux Telescope, the Electron Telescope, the Digital Processing Unit, two Anisotropy Telescopes, and two dc/dc power converters. Preliminary results obtained from quick-look data from COSPIN telescopes showed that the instruments are functioning properly and that their design has achieved both the wide dynamic range and the precision required in this mission.

Abstract

The 8B flux from elastic scattering (ES) and charged current (CC) of electrons was recorded at the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory (SNO) between November 2, 1999 and January 15, 2001. Data were partitioned into two sets then analyzed. As a result, the first direct indication of a nonelectron flavor component in the solar neutrino flux was established.

Abstract

The 8B flux from elastic scattering (ES) and charged current (CC) of electrons was recorded at the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory (SNO) between November 2, 1999 and January 15, 2001. Data were partitioned into two sets then analyzed. As a result, the first direct indication of a nonelectron flavor component in the solar neutrino flux was established.

Abstract

Solar neutrinos from (8)B decay have been detected at the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory via the charged current (CC) reaction on deuterium and the elastic scattering (ES) of electrons. The flux of nu(e)'s is measured by the CC reaction rate to be straight phi(CC)(nu(e)) = 1.75 +/- 0.07(stat)(+0.12)(-0.11)(syst) +/- 0.05(theor) x 10(6) cm(-2) s(-1). Comparison of straight phi(CC)(nu(e)) to the Super-Kamiokande Collaboration's precision value of the flux inferred from the ES reaction yields a 3.3 sigma difference, assuming the systematic uncertainties are normally distributed, providing evidence of an active non- nu(e) component in the solar flux. The total flux of active 8B neutrinos is determined to be 5.44+/-0.99 x 10(6) cm(-2) s(-1).

Abstract

This article provides the complete description of results from the Phase I data set of the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory (SNO). The Phase I data set is based on a 0.65 kiloton-year exposure of 2H2O (in the following denoted as D2O) to the solar 8B neutrino flux. Included here are details of the SNO physics and detector model, evaluations of systematic uncertainties, and estimates of backgrounds. Also discussed are SNO's approach to statistical extraction of the signals from the three neutrino reactions (charged current, neutral current, and elastic scattering) and the results of a search for a day-night asymmetry in the νe flux. Under the assumption that the 8B spectrum is undistorted, the measurements from this phase yield a solar νe flux of (νe)=1.76+0.05-0. 05(stat.)+0.09-0.09(syst.)×106 cm-2 s-1 and a non-νe component of (νμτ)=3.41+0.45-0.45(stat.)+0.45-0.48(syst.)×106 cm-2 s-1. The sum of these components provides a total flux in excellent agreement with the predictions of standard solar models. The day-night asymmetry in the νe flux is found to be Ae=7.0±4.9(stat.)+1.3-1.2%(syst.), when the asymmetry in the total flux is constrained to be zero.

Abstract

The Sudbury Neutrino Observatory is a second-generation water Cherenkov detector designed to determine whether the currently observed solar neutrino deficit is a result of neutrino oscillations. The detector is unique in its use of D2O as a detection medium, permitting it to make a solar model-independent test of the neutrino oscillation hypothesis by comparison of the charged- and neutral-current interaction rates. In this paper the physical properties, construction, and preliminary operation of the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory are described. Data and predicted operating parameters are provided whenever possible.

Abstract

The Sudbury Neutrino Observatory (SNO) is a 1,000 tonne heavy water Cerenkov-based neutrino detector situated 2,000 meters underground in INCO's Creighton Mine near Sudbury, Ontario, Canada. For the neutrinos from [sup 8]B decay in the Sun SNO observes the Charged Current neutrino reaction sensitive only to electron neutrinos and others (Neutral Current and Elastic Scattering) sensitive to all active neutrino types and thereby can search for direct evidence of neutrino flavor change. Using these reactions and assuming the standard [sup 8]B shape, the ν[sub e] component of the [sup 8]B solar flux is φ[sub e] = 1.76[sup +0.05, sub -0.05](stat.)[sup +0.09, sub -0.09] (syst.) × 10[sup 6] cm[sup -2]s[sup -1] for a kinetic energy threshold of 5 MeV. The non-ν[sub e] component is φ[sub μτ] = 3.41[sup +0.45, sub -0.45](stat.)[sup +0.48, sub 0.45] (syst.) × 10[sup 6] cm[sup -2]s[sup -l], 5.3σ greater than zero, providing strong evidence for solar ν[sub e] flavor transformation. The total flux measured with the NC reaction is φ[sub NC] = 5.09[sup +0.44, sub -0.43](stat.)[sup +0.46, sub -0.43] (syst.) × 10[sup 6] cm[sup -2]s[sup -1] consistent with solar models. For charged current events, assuming an undistorted [sup 8]B spectrum, the night minus day rate is 14.0% ± 6.3%[sup +1.5. sub -1.4]% of the average rate. If the total flux of active neutrinos is additionally constrained to have no asymmetry, the ν[sub e] asymmetry is found to be 7.0% ± 4.9%[sup +1.3, sub -1.2]%. A global solar neutrino analysis in terms of matter-enhanced oscillations of two active flavors strongly favors the Large Mixing Angle (LMA) solution. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

26. The loneliness experience of the dying and of those who care for them.

Abstract

Objective: The study compared the qualitative aspects of the loneliness experience of the dying, their caregivers, and the general population.Method: The patients were recruited in an oncological hospice in Israel, and, despite being on their deathbed, agreed to participate in the study. Thirty-seven cancer-stricken patients, 78 caregivers, and 128 participants from the general population volunteered to partake in the study. They answered, anonymously, a 30-item questionnaire and were asked to endorse those items that described their experience of loneliness.Results: Results suggested that the three populations did, indeed, differ in their experience of loneliness. More specifically, dying patients and their caregivers had significantly higher subscale scores on the Growth and Discovery and the Self-alienation subscales than the general population did. It was also found that the number of hospitalization days was significantly negatively correlated to the Emotional Distress and Self-alienation subscales.Significance Of Results: The present results indicate that loneliness is experienced differently in or out of the hospice and by the dying patient, his or her caregiver, and the general population. This may be the first study to examine the qualitative aspects of the loneliness experienced by the dying and by their caregivers. 27. High dose controlled-release oxycodone in hospice care.

Abstract

Controlled-release oxycodone (OxyContin) is commonly used for pain relief in terminal cancer. This opioid may be considered as a treatment option for patients who prefer oral pain control, but who are unwilling to take oral morphine sulphate or cannot tolerate its side effects. However, little is documented about the use of high doses of this drug in terminal cancer patients. The purpose of this study was to investigate the clinical characteristics of terminally ill hospice inpatients treated with OxyContin for pain, and to compare those patients receiving high-dose OxyContin (150 mg/day) with patients taking low and more typical doses. This retrospective chart analysis with parallel groups included records of 97 consecutive terminal cancer patients. We recorded clinical and demographic data, as well as data regarding daily doses, rescue doses and parameters associated with quality of life. The mean daily OxyContin dose was 78.6 mg per day for all patients. Only 18 (18.55%) patients were treated with high doses (mean daily dose 231.1 mg). No statistically significant correlations were found between any of the deomographic parameters and dose ranges, with the exception of patients with painful bony metastases who consumed significantly higher doses (p = 0.008). No differences were observed in sleep quality or mood as a factor of OxyContin doses. However, compared with patients receiving low-dose (OR 1.0), patients treated with moderate and high doses maintained Karnofsky scores higher than 40 points most of the time (OR = 3.77, CI 1.1-13.0 and OR 4.95, CI 0.8-29.9, respectively). Survival was not related to OxyContin doses (Log Rank test, p = 0.12; Breslow test, p = 0.37). We conclude that the use of high dose OxyContin for terminal cancer pain management is safe, efficient, and unrelated to shorter survival times. The results suggest that health care professionals may use higher OxyContin doses, when indicated, to enable better pain relief and quality end-of-life care. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The measurement of day and night neutrino energy spectra at Sudbury Neutrino Observatory (SNO) and constraints on neutrino mixing parameters were presented. A global solar neutrino analysis in terms of matter-enhanced oscillations of two active flavors strongly favored the large mixing angle solution. Results obtained were the first direct measurements of the day-night asymmetries in the νe flux and the total ν flux from the Sun was deduced.

Abstract

Purpose: The study's primary objective was to assess predictive validity of the Edmonton Classification System for Cancer Pain (ECS-CP) in a diverse international sample of advanced cancer patients. We hypothesised that patients with problematic pain syndromes would require more time to achieve stable pain control, more complicated analgesic regimens and higher opioid doses than patients with less complex pain syndromes., Methods: Patients with advanced cancer (n=1100) were recruited from 11 palliative care sites in Canada, USA, Ireland, Israel, Australia and New Zealand (100 per site). Palliative care specialists completed the ECS-CP for each patient. Daily patient pain ratings, number of breakthrough pain doses, types of pain adjuvants and opioid consumption were recorded until study end-point (i.e. stable pain control, discharge and death)., Results: A pain syndrome was present in 944/1100 (86%). In univariate analysis, younger age, neuropathic pain, incident pain, psychological distress, addictive behaviour and initial pain intensity were significantly associated with more days to achieve stable pain control. In multivariate analysis, younger age, neuropathic pain, incident pain, psychological distress and pain intensity were independently associated with days to achieve stable pain control. Patients with neuropathic pain, incident pain, psychological distress or higher pain intensity required more adjuvants and higher final opioid doses; those with addictive behaviour required only higher final opioid doses. Cognitive deficit was associated with fewer days to stable pain control, lower final opioid doses and fewer pain adjuvants., Conclusion: The replication of previous findings suggests that the ECS-CP can predict pain complexity in a range of practice settings and countries., (Copyright © 2010 Elsevier Ltd.
