- Abstract
This study investigates the factors that influence how long it takes for master's-level graduate students to find employment. The original contribution stems from questioning whether the structure and content of university programmes play a role in graduates' ability to secure jobs. To this end, we focus on three dimensions at three points in time after graduation: competence acquisition, teaching methods and programme characteristics. The dataset comes from a large-scale study on graduates' employability by the Observatory for University Employability and Employment (OEEU) and contains detailed information about master's degree graduates in Spain. A multinomial logit estimated by the maximum likelihood method is used to identify the critical factors influencing the likelihood of acquiring a job sooner. The findings indicate that educational programmes fail to provide the necessary competencies to ensure a smooth transition from the university to the job market and that study programme initiatives related to active learning and internships make a difference in this transition. We believe that these results shed light on specific characteristics of academic programmes and should be considered during programme design to enhance graduates' employability and faster labour market insertion.

- Abstract
Mathematics is presented in non-STEM disciplines as a subject that helps students acquire tools they will need in their future careers. Therefore, the need for instruction in mathematics demands content, oriented not only towards fundamental principles and techniques, but also towards their application in a specific context. By directing the teaching in this sense, students are able to recognise the relevance of mathematics and the possibilities that this subject offers. The purpose of this paper is thus to propose a methodology for making the learning of mathematics meaningful for non-STEM students. We illustrate its implementation by presenting an activity that requires business university students to search for economic applications of the concepts learned in a course of mathematics. As students' involvement is envisaged, the activity incorporates an active learning methodology that aims to promote the acquisition of hard and soft skills. Results obtained from its application are reported and discussed.

- Abstract
Purpose: This study addresses the challenge of integrating entrepreneurial competences development into the traditionally structured engineering curriculum, recognizing its potential contribution to job creation. Specifically, this study proposes a course design that intersects project management and entrepreneurial disciplines, adopting a challenge-based learning approach. Design/methodology/approach: Considering a list of common features that entrepreneurs and engineers—in the role of project managers—should excel at, and building upon the principles of experiential learning, this study proposes and describes a course design that is expected to help engineering students develop entrepreneurial competences. Through a series of assessment instruments and descriptive statistics, the study evaluates its implementation in a pilot test applied in a Project Management course at a Spanish university. Findings: The results demonstrate a significant improvement in students' entrepreneurial competences after completing the course. Noteworthy variations in receptiveness to skill development among different personality profiles are observed. Gender differences are minimal, with the exception of women exhibiting heightened self-perception in the autonomy dimension. Originality/value: This study explores the common features shared by two often-disconnected disciplines, namely engineering and entrepreneurship. It suggests that integrating both perspectives through a challenge-based course design can enhance entrepreneurial competences among engineering students without compromising the specific knowledge gained from engineering programs. Engaging students in such pedagogical experiences not only fosters entrepreneurial competences but also contributes to their professional and personal growth., Peer Reviewed, Preprint

- Abstract
In the realm of academic engagement, this study directs its focus toward a policy instrument that has received surprisingly scant attention within the literature, despite its substantial investment: European Union-funded research projects. These projects are designed to foster collaboration and establish a framework that supports and fortifies the creation and dissemination of exceptional knowledge and cutting-edge technologies. These endeavors are anticipated to fuel economic growth, spur social development, and address global challenges. Within this study, we delve into the impact of team experience and diversity on the research performance of consortia — groups of organizations — that have been successfully awarded funding within the FP7 and H2020 funding schemes. In order to dissect the influence of learning, our analysis is confined to consortia that have collaborated on multiple occasions. Drawing from data sourced from Community Research and Development Information Service, our findings unveil that beyond the monetary allocation, an array of team attributes and environmental factors play a role in augmenting team performance., Open Access funding provided thanks to the CRUE-CSIC agreement with Springer Nature., Peer Reviewed, Postprint (published version)

- Abstract
Due to the old-fashioned offer of the leading brands in the sector and their high prices, it is being lost. In order to remedy the situation, Niss was born. A company dedicated to the design, production and sale of jewellery. With the main objective of becoming a reference brand, the company has an extensive catalogue, which is continuously updated, with jewellery whose aesthetics merge traditional jewellery with the new trends of generation Z. This catalogue also offers jewellery customisation and design services from scratch. According to the purchasing power of the target audience, it is important for the jewellery to be affordable, without losing sight of quality, so in search of a cost-effective manufacturing process, laser cutting was found. This has various design restrictions and is therefore complemented by microfusion. And concerning the economic plan, a two-stage market entry strategy has been organised. During the first phase, the investment is minimal and production is outsourced. This phase could be considered a trial period. Once this has been overcome, with a growing sales volume and the beginning of a good reputation, a second, much more significant, investment will be made, with which an own workshop will be set up. In conclusion, it can be confirmed that the expected positive public acceptance is based on solid market research and that different factors have been analysed and applied which could be decisive for the popularity of the brand. Furthermore, the two-phase strategic plan guarantees a secure investment with which to grow at the same speed as sales.

- Abstract
Research on entrepreneurial ecosystems has consolidated over the past decades. This study ventures beyond traditional analyses that primarily focus on quantitative outcomes to investigate the foundational processes that can facilitate a range of socio-economic advantages. Recognizing a gap in the existing literature, which often correlates input factors with anticipated benefits yet struggles to unearth underlying mechanisms, our research offers a novel perspective through applying a network-centric service ecosystem lens grounded in a service-dominant logic. Utilizing a qualitative approach based on pragmatic abduction, 16 narrative interviews explored the experiences and perspectives of multiple entrepreneurial actors within a privately governed Spanish ecosystem. Findings present a conceptual model that bridges emphasis between structure and outcomes with those of agency and strategy., Peer Reviewed, Postprint (published version)

- Abstract
Universities contribute to social and economic development by engaging in knowledge exchange (KE) activities. These activities go beyond the generation and dissemination of knowledge, involving active collaboration with different stakeholders and adopting a central role in the knowledge-based society. The measurement of KE activities and their impact on society has been skewed towards research activities, with commercialization offering a limited view of their overall potential. In this study, we propose an alternative approach that provides a comprehensive understanding of KE activities conducted by universities. Specifically, we create and validate a scale that considers the perceptions of respondents regarding the KE activities developed in their university. Contrary to previous studies that consider the university as the main unit of analysis, we chose the faculty as a lower-level entity of the university. Therefore, the scale is targeted to all faculty deans as being ultimately responsible for these centers. Our work relied on a sample of public universities in Spain. After a series of refinements, a 17-item scale is presented, arranged in five dimensions: knowledge and technology commercialization, interdisciplinary research collaboration, research with and for society, outreach activities, and executive and collaborative teaching., Peer Reviewed, Postprint (author's final draft)

- Abstract
Cal destacar que al llarg del projecte s’han utilitzat diferents recursos gràfics per, Street cleaning and waste collection services are fundamental components of urban management, as they are responsible for maintaining public spaces in good condition and managing the waste generated by citizens. In this context, the company responsible for these services faces the challenge of maintaining and improving the quality of the cleaning and collection activities carried out in the municipalities. The main objectives of this project are to analyse the street cleaning and waste collection services in relation to compliance with the quality standards established by the Esplugues de Llobregat City Council, subsequently study the current data collection system in these services, and through the detection of inefficiencies, propose a design that satisfies the users' needs. Firstly, a study of the municipality where the project is developed and of each of the street cleaning and waste collection services is conducted. Additionally, the management of service quality is presented, including perspectives from both the city council and the company. Once the project is contextualized, inspection checklists have been created to systematically evaluate the aspects required by the city council to analyse the quality of the services. Through a quantitative analysis, the results are presented, and it is concluded that the area with the most room for improvement is the data collection system. Subsequently, the functioning of this process is studied using a flowchart, and user-centred design techniques are employed to determine their needs and requirements, presenting the final conclusions through the Persona Canvas tool. Lean methodology principles have been applied to detect waste, and an FMEA and a bivariate diagram have been used to determine the priorities for action. It is worth noting that various graphic resources have been utilized throughout the project to visually represent the project information.

Finalmente, se ha an, The furniture industry plays a crucial role in the daily lives of users, influencing the physical and psychological environment that surrounds us and having a significant impact on personal organisation and well-being. The availability of storage products that adapt to the aesthetics of each home is a key factor that companies must adapt to. Based on this idea, this project has developed a storage unit that can adapt both to current users and to the specifications of an existing company that wants to enter the sector without abandoning its main activity, sheet steel bending. In order to realise the project, current market trends were analysed and the main users for whom the product is intended were identified. In addition, the company's production capabilities for the future solution were evaluated, as well as the brand and regulatory requirements that would affect the development of the idea. Once the specification study was complete, a range of product design tools and methodologies were applied, analysing the interaction of the product with users throughout its lifecycle and the needs it would have to satisfy, based on study references from designers such as Stuart Pugh and Dieter Rams. The result of this process is the proposal of a new sideboard as a storage method. The work concludes with an evaluation of the feasibility of the proposal, analysed from different perspectives. On the one hand, the design's interaction between parts and users was verified using tools such as Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA). On the other hand, the potential environmental impact of the product's implementation was considered, taking into account ecodesign strategies to reduce its carbon footprint throughout its life cycle. Finally, its possible implementation in the production system was analysed, verifying its performance alongside other factors that could affect the product's market introduction, such as economic costs versus potential demand for the product.

- Abstract
This study uncovers how university libraries contribute to research processes conducted at universities. To do so, a bibliometric and systematic analysis of the literature is presented. The review shows that the line of research on university libraries and their contribution to research is a fragmented field in constant development, with a marked tendency toward the use of qualitative methods and case studies. The original value of this work lies in the creation of a thematic map and a thematic-temporal evolutionary scheme that allows us to understand the main perspectives from which the role of libraries in supporting research activities has been approached. Three time periods that reflect different terms in the conceptualisation of the library are characterised. The study concludes with recommendations, including indications for future research that should consider larger and more diverse samples, involve researchers as the object of study and consider applying quantitative or mixed methods., Peer Reviewed, Postprint (author's final draft)

- Abstract
Títol alternatiu emprat a la intranet docenta de l'EPSEVG: "Preparation of a business plan for a 3D printing and DIY service company", The COVID-19 pandemic had a significant global impact, changing people’s life both personally and professionally. Along with lockdowns, physical interaction was limited, so out of boredom, many people began looking for new hobbies and activities to keep themselves active. Some of them found entertainment in gaming, and others in crafting, which led them to continue these hobbies until this day. Although people found new ways to entertain themselves, after the lockdown was over, many people began to struggle with the amount of things they had accumulated, creating a cluttered and overwhelming space at home. This is where the idea of creating a company that inspires people to continue doing their hobbies was born. CraftiX is a startup dedicated to providing products and services that help people keep their leisure and workspace tidy and organized, so they feel motivated to break the routine by doing their favorite activities. The company focuses on meeting the needs of hobbyist and gamers, who are the main target group, by offering them 3D printing related products and services. The main objectives of this project are; to demonstrate the need to solve the problem of organization and storage of materials, tools, and other items, to find out the feasibility of implementing a 3D printing shop in Barcelona and, finally, to create a successful and interesting business plan. To design an attractive business model, an in-depth study of the environment, target users, and administrative and material elements necessary to implement the idea has been conducted, resulting in a sustainable and viable business plan.

- Abstract
Purpose: This study aims to assess the effectiveness of active teaching methodologies, namely, problem-oriented learning and the case method, to develop sustainability competencies. It also analyses the advantages and challenges for teachers when implementing the sustainable development goals (SDGs) in eight undergraduate and postgraduate degrees within the framework of a cross-departmental collaboration. Design/methodology/approach: A mixed research methodology was used: a quantitative study to assess the levels of acquisition of sustainability and research competencies and the potential correlation between them, as well as a mixed study of the advantages and challenges for the teachers participating in the cross-departmental initiative. Curriculum content linked to the SDGs was worked on. Active teaching methodologies and a competency assessment rubric were used as curriculum implementation strategies in the eight courses involved. Findings: Active teaching methodologies are suitable to implement the SDGs in university teaching and to develop both sustainability and research competencies. A synergic effect is observed between them. Coordinated work between teachers of different subjects in several degrees contributes to developing a culture of sustainability at the university. Research limitations/implications: Although the collaboration between teachers from different disciplines was successful, this study did not promote interdisciplinary projects among students from different degrees. This promises to be highly valuable for future research. Practical implications: Students can become present and future leaders in achieving the SDGs. This approach can be replicated in other educational institutions. Social implications: This study bridges the gap between theoretical recommendations and the practical implementation of the SDGs in undergraduate and postgraduate degrees. Originality/value: Coordinated work between teachers of different subjects in different degrees, Peer Reviewed, Preprint

- Abstract
It is of utmost importance to innovate in current teaching practices at higher education in order to enhance learners' involvement, comprehension, cooperation and motivation. In non-STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) programmes students tend to display a negative attitude towards mathematic-related courses, which usually materialises in low student participation if only using traditional lecture formats. Aiming at overcoming this, game-based learning (GBL) is regarded as a potential means of improving students' confidence and increasing their interest for learning. This study proposes a teamwork activity inspired by GBL, presented in the form of a competition. To test the suitability of the activity, we report its implementation in the subject of Mathematics 1, taught as part of the Business Administration Degree at Universitat Internacional de Catalunya (Spain). We hope that the underlying idea of the activity as well as the encouraging results obtained stimulate lecturers to implement GBL activities in their courses.

- Abstract
Universities must ensure that academic staff are qualified and competent for performing their job. Teaching and research are two key activities in which lecturers should excel. While some authors suggest teaching and research complement each other and positively influence student satisfaction, some others point to a rivalry effect between the two. This study aims at shedding new light on this debate. We first examine the relationship between teaching experience and student satisfaction. In a second stage we explore the mediating effect of research intensity in this relationship. Lastly, we examine potential differences due to contract status. Data gathered in 2014 come from 229 different subjects offered at the Universitat Internacional de Catalunya (Spain). Our results support the thesis that teaching experience is a determinant of student satisfaction. We also found evidence that current incentive systems at universities are research-biased, negatively impacting on students' perceptions of the teaching received (student satisfaction).

- Abstract
Engineering education is facing new challenges to effectively provide the appropriate skills to future engineering professionals according to market demands. This study proposes a model based on active learning methods, which is expected to facilitate the acquisition of the professional skills most highly valued in the information and communications technology (ICT) market. The theoretical foundations of the study are based on the specific literature on active learning methodologies. The Delphi method is used to establish the fit between learning methods and generic skills required by the ICT sector. An innovative proposition is therefore presented that groups the required skills in relation to the teaching method that best develops them. The qualitative research suggests that a combination of project-based learning and the learning contract is sufficient to ensure a satisfactory skills level for this profile of engineers.
