EMSO is a distributed Research Infrastructure currently comprising nine Regional Facilities (RFs) and three shallow water test sites, strategically located all the way from the southern entrance of the Arctic Ocean across to the North Atlantic through the Mediterranean to the Black Sea. Since the beginning of 2021 Norway has been integrated as a new EMSO ERIC member, extending the geographical coverage to the Nordic Sea and the Arctic. EMSO’s extension will benefit from an experienced team managing moored observatories, ocean gliders and the Mohn Ridge Seafloor and Water Column Observatory.

American Geophysical Union (AGU) Fall Meeting, 9-13 December 2019, San Francisco, EMSO ERIC, a pan-European Research Infrastructure, is supported by an integrated system of Regional Facilities involving 11 multi-sensor fixed-point Regional facilities-platforms deployed in ‘key environmental sites’ across the European seas. These platforms are engaged to the long-term multidisciplinary observation of the deep-sea ocean and water column to better understanding environmental changes, particularly the interactions between hydrosphere, biosphere and geosphere to face environmental challenges as Marine Ecosystems, Climate Change and Geo-Hazards, and thus support science, strategic policy, industry, civil society.The Distributed Research Infrastructure is part of a broader scientific research landscape, which connects national and European marine research strategies, producing scientific services responding to societal demands to understand climate change impact, minimize the effects, and planning scenarios to mitigate the impacts of several hazards. EMSO aims to integrate the existing fixed-point ocean observatories in Europe and represents a great added value due to the scalability from local to regional, as well as the acquisition of marine data operated in an open best practice approach. It aims to maintain and to invest in existing structures, encouraging the key concepts to underpin the Framework for Ocean Observing which EMSO embrace. The EMSO growth builds upon its strategic framework, a path towards integration based on a 3-phase approach aimed to identify the value of the EMSO RFs and the gaps to fill. A 'dedicated roadmap' is accelerating the growth process of EMSO. It aims to consolidate synergies and boost the link with member countries and to attract new ones. National strategic priorities are the key elements, as well as the primary technological, social, political and scientific drivers, together with the high quality of data, services, and fast access to the information following the FAIR principles

American Geophysical Union (AGU) Fall Meeting, 9-13 December 2019, San Francisco, European Multidisciplinary Seafloor and water-column Observatory (EMSO ERIC) is supported through the European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures (ESFRI) to lead the advancement of knowledge of the natural and anthropogenic processes in the ocean, seafloor and sub-seafloor to promoting an inter- and multi-disciplinary approach through long-term time series collected in 11 fixed key environmental locations from the North Atlantic, across Mediterranean Sea to the anoxic Black Sea. EMSO ERIC also supports the development and progress of marine technologies and responds to the environmental demands of European society, such as the Blue Growth Strategy of the EU H2020 Program. Its objective is to establish a distributed and smart sensor system, and to contribute to the identification of methodologies for the preservation of ocean-health and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). The aim of EMSO ERIC is to illuminate a wide variety of environmental processes frombiogeochemical and physical processes to the stability and sustainability of biodiversity and the complex functioning of the marine ecosystems. The increase of the sea level, the warming and acidification of the oceans are indicators of a constant global change. Phenomena like the contamination of nutrients by anthropogenic activities, the toxic algae blooms, and harmful pollution of plastics in the sea, are significantly growing. Modern societies demand a better knowledge of the oceans. EMSO ERIC represents the ability to address the social benefits of ocean observatories, meeting these social demands through services such as science, engineering & logistics, data management, communication, and industry & innovation. EMSO ERIC promotes the science of excellence and coordinates open ocean European observatories in interdisciplinary scientific research. In this scenario, a significant effort is made to define methodologies and best practices for coordinating and integrating different parameters coming from the observatories, improving the existing capacities in each Observatory, at the European Seas

On 26 and 27 June, 2019, the Environment Department of Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV) organized a first internal workshop dedicated to the scientific and technological research on the marine environment. This volume contains the extended abstracts of the presentations given in the workshop. INGV promotes the development of research, observational infrastructures and services related to the marine environment in the broad sense for a variety of stakeholders. These activities, mostly carried out within the framework of the Environment Department, are dispersed in different Sections of INGV, involving various groups of researchers, technologists, technicians and project managers. The workshop aim was to present the state‐of‐the‐art of the activities around the marine environment and promote the exchange of knowledge, ideas and expertise among colleagues. More than 60 INGV scientists attended the workshop with a lively interest and active participation to constructive debates. This volume includes 35 extended abstracts grouped three categories: (1) Research, (2) Infrastructures and (3) Services for the Society. The Research Section has 23 abstracts on topics ranging from fluid geochemistry of natural marine emissions in both volcanic, hydrothermal and sedimentary settings, crustal structures and imaging, the evolution of the physical state of the Mediterranean, observed sea level trends and future projections, paleoclimate reconstructions and proxies for the occurrence of paleo‐tsunami. The Infrastructures Section includes 6 abstracts presenting the state of the art and the perspectives of INGV research facilities, the development of original devices and techniques for the monitoring of a variety of physical phenomena in the Mediterranean environment, with specific attention on areas of active volcanism and tectonics, as well as the management of specific databases. The Services for the Society Section also includes 6 abstracts related to original experimental devices developed for security in harbor environments, as well as to operational oceanography and to third mission initiatives aimed to raise public awareness toward environmental pollution and marine sciences. The large variety of the topics presented and the relatively high number of attendees respect to the youthfulness and limited dimension of the marine environmental research area at INGV compared to its traditional disciplines, is an incitement to promote further this kind of initiatives based on in‐person discussion and mutual update. We take the opportunity to express our thankfulness to all the attendees.

It is coordinated by a central management office and promotes monitoring services offered by 11 fixed-point deep-sea and water column observatories around Europe, from the Atlantic, through the Mediterranean, and to the anoxic Black Sea. EMSO aims are to advance marine science and technologies in the frame of sustainable development policies concerning ocean health, biodiversity, climate, and environmental changes. EMSO provides Science Services, in the form of data and/or access to the regional distributed observatory locations for experiments or testing of new equipment. EMSO ERIC is in its second year of operation, and its challenge is to turn the diversity of technical approaches and science priorities of each regional distributed observatory locations into a strength for building robust network-scale best practices, labels, and science services. This presentation reports on collaborative work initiated in recent months by EMSO, primarily within the Science Service Group, focusing on 3 practical goals: 1) offer online access, Quality Control (QC) and adequate data management tools for deep-water salinity and temperature data from five EMSO sites; 2) develop and promote a standard sampling and analytical procedure for microplastic pollution assessments to be performed at each EMSO site during maintenance cruises; and 3) explore the needs of the growing group of users of marine acoustics data (e.g. geohazards, marine mammals, sound pollution, marine transport) and design online access, QC and suitable scan-visualisation tools for acoustic data records. Our goal is, through and beyond EMSO Science Services, to help build smart ocean observation systems that meet the growing knowledge needs on natural and anthropogenic processes in the ocea

European Geosciences Union (EGU) General Assembly 2018, 8-13 April 2018, Vienna, Austria.-- 1 page, EMSO ERIC is a powerful, large-scale, strategically distributed world-class European Research Infrastructure Consortium with the goal to lead marine science and technology advancements. EMSO delivers high-quality time-series of ocean environmental parameters with unprecedented time resolution to address global challenges such as climate trends, marine ecosystem preservation, and marine geo-hazards generation and mitigation. It represents a unique marine infrastructure in the world, with key locations from the North- Atlantic Ocean through the Mediterranean Sea, to the Black Sea. EMSO ERIC aims to shed light on the ocean processes and interactions among the biosphere, geosphere and hydrosphere on a larger scale than the one accessible by its individual Regional Facilities. EMSO ERIC’s great challenge is the integration and coordination of Regional Facilities, while at the same time leveraging the specific features of each. EMSO governance and management, including the Director General, the Central Management Office, the Regional Teams, and the Service Groups, ensures the adoption and implementation of a strategic plan for long-lasting sustainability and expansion of state-of-art observational systems, methodologies and auxiliary facilities. The EMSO ERIC action plan is presently focused on structuring services for scientists and stakeholders to access to quality-controlled data and data products on an open and interoperable basis, implementing best practices and capacity building in a collaborative framework of European and worldwide environmental research infrastructures and programmes. The aim of this communication is to disseminate the EMSO ERIC strategic plan and action plan to show how they meet scientists’ and stakeholders’ requirements and how they contribute to the European Ocean Observing System (EOOS), to European policies and strategies such as the Blue Growth, JPI-Oceans and the Marine Strategy Framework Directive, and to the COPERNICUS program. EMSO not only brings together countries and disciplines, but allows the pooling of resources and coordination to assemble harmonised data into a comprehensive regional ocean picture which it will then make available to researchers and stakeholders worldwide on an open and interoperable access basis

The following work represents the first vertical deformation measurement of the ground in coastal waters obtained through the use of a BPR sensor (Bottom Pressure Recorder) installed in shallow water, with an accuracy comparable with that of the measures carried out by a GPS network placed on the mainland. The described measurement method allows the use of pressure sensors - based on quartz technology - as a possible and low cost integration, which allows the extension in the coastal waters of the geodetic monitoring networks located on the mainland. The area under investigation is the caldera of Campi Flegrei (Pozzuoli) in which even the bradyseism is continually monitored by the Vesuvius Observatory surveillance system in Naples. In the Gulf of Pozzuoli, which is the submerged part of the caldera, on-going studies are performing innovative methods for geophysical monitoring at sea bottom, and – in particular – vertical measures of the soil through the use of BPR sensors. Even in the shallow water condition, such as that of the Gulf of Pozzuoli, it is noted that the BPR can provide reliable estimates of vertical movements of the soil at sea bottom, through the correction of the pressure data with environmental data and it comparison with the sea level obtained from the tide gauge network. In the pages that follow, it provides guidance as to the real possibility to use BPR for the vertical movements measure of the ground, at speeds of a few centimetres per year, in the submerged part of an active volcanic area, where the sea depth does not exceed one hundred meters., Il seguente lavoro descrive la prima misura di deformazione verticale del suolo in acque costiere effettuata mediante l’utilizzo di un sensore di pressione BPR (Bottom Pressure Recorder) installato a fondo mare a circa 100m di profondità, con una accuratezza comparabile con quella delle misure effettuate dalla rete di ricevitori GPS collocata a terra. Questo metodo di misura consente l’utilizzo dei sensori di pressione con tecnologia al quarzo come possibile alternativa, ed a costi contenuti, ai sistemi GPS, e che permette l’estensione nelle acque costiere delle reti di monitoraggio geodetico collocate sulla terraferma. L’area sottoposta ad indagine è la caldera dei Campi Flegrei (Pozzuoli) in cui il fenomeno del bradisismo è continuamente monitorato dal sistema di sorveglianza dell’Osservatorio Vesuviano di Napoli. Nel Golfo di Pozzuoli, che rappresenta la parte sommersa della caldera, sono in corso studi volti a sperimentare metodologie innovative per il monitoraggio geofisico a fondo mare, ed, in particolare, misure di movimenti verticali del suolo mediante l’utilizzo di sensori BPR. Anche nella condizione di fondale basso, come quello caratterizzante il Golfo di Pozzuoli, si evidenzia che il BPR può fornire stime attendibili di movimenti verticali del suolo a fondo mare, attraverso la correzione del dato di pressione con dati ambientali e la comparazione con la misura del livello del mare ottenuta dalla rete mareografica. Nelle pagine seguenti vengono inoltre fornite indicazioni circa la concreta possibilità di utilizzare tale tipologia di strumenti per la misura di movimenti verticali del suolo, con velocità di pochi cm/anno, nella parte sommersa di un’area vulcanica attiva dove, tuttavia, la profondità di misura non ecceda I cento metri al di sotto del livello del mare.

The geographic locations of the EMSO observatory nodes represent key sites in European waters, from the Arctic, through the Atlantic and Mediterranean, to the Black Sea (Figure 1), as defined through previous studies performed in FP6 and FP7 EC projects such as ESONET-CA, ESONET-NoE, EMSO-PP (Person et al., 2015).

The establishment of a global network of seafloor observatories will help to provide the means to understand the ocean, and the complex physical, biological, chemical, and geological systems operating within it. This is a challenge for the opening decades of the 21st century. The EC experience on seafloor monitoring is outlined since the early stage (beginning of ‘90s). In particular, the attention is focused on the GEOSTAR experience, describing the technical characteristics and the sensors used in experiments. Some recent projects are detailed. Finally, the European effort towards permanent underwater network EMSO, one of the large-scale research infrastructures included in the ESFRI Roadmap, is also discussed. All the previous activities are framed in this context.
