Benzene is considered a toxic and hazardous pollutant in Tehran metropolis. The storage tanks of petroleum products and refueling in gas stations are among the main sources of benzene emissions. Using the software AERMOD and reviewing the benzene dispersion maps at different distances from 412 storage tanks at 148 gas stations, it was found the permissible distance of the emission source is dependent on various variables such as the number of loading times and the storage capacity. When, storage capacity in the range of 60,000 L to 96,000 L and the number of loading is in the range of 675 to 1328 times a year, the concentration of benzene at a distance of 30 m of the emission source reaches the annual standard of 5 µg/ m3. While, storage capacity in the range of 80,000 L to 128,000 L and the number of loading is in the range of 1329 to 1834 times a year, the concentration of benzene at a distance of 40 m of the emission source reaches the annual standard of 5 µg/ m3. To curb the spread of COVID-19 pandemic, many countries around the world imposed an unprecedented lockdown producing reductions in pollutant emissions. Unfortunately, the lockdown-driven global ambient benzene changes still remained unknown. The ensemble machine-learning model coupled with the chemical transport models (CTMs) was applied to estimate global high-resolution ambient benzene levels. Afterwards, the XGBoost algorithm was employed to decouple the contributions of meteorology and emission reduction to ambient benzene. The change ratio (Pdew) of deweathered benzene concentration from pre-lockdown to lockdown period was in the order of India (−23.6 %) > Europe (−21.9 %) > United States (−16.2 %) > China (−15.6 %). The detrended change (P*) of deweathered benzene level (change ratio in 2020 – change ratio in 2019) followed the order of India (P* = −16.2 %) > Europe (P* = −13.9 %) > China (P* = −13.3 %) > United States (P* = −6.00 %). Substantial decreases of atmospheric benzene levels saved sufficient health benefits. The global average lifetime carcinogenic risks (LCR) and hazard index (HI) decreased from 4.89 × 10−7 and 5.90 × 10−3 and 4.51 × 10−7 and 5.40 × 10−3, respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The fate of volatile organic compounds (VOC) vapors in the unsaturated zone is the basis for evaluating the natural attenuation potential and vapor intrusion risk. Microcosm and column experiments were conducted to study the effects chemical speciation and soil types/properties on the fate of petroleum VOCs in unsaturated zone. The biodegradation and total attenuation rates of the seven VOCs obtained by microcosm experiments in black soil and yellow earth were also generally higher than those in floodplain soil, lateritic red earth, and quartz sand. The VOC vapors in floodplain soil, lateritic red earth, and quartz sand showed slow total attenuation rates (<0.3 d -1 ). N-pentane, methylcyclopentane, and methylcyclohexane showed lower biodegradation rates than octane and three monoaromatic hydrocarbons. Volatilization into the atmosphere and biodegradation are two important natural attenuation paths for VOCs in unsaturated soil columns. The volatilization loss fractions of different volatile hydrocarbons in all five unsaturated soils were generally in the order: n-pentane (93.5%-97.8%) > methylcyclopentane (77.2%-85.5%) > methylcyclohexane (53.5%-69.2%) > benzene (17.1%-73.3%) > toluene (0-45.7%) > octane (1.9%-34.2%) > m-xylene (0-5.7%). The fractions by volatilization into the atmosphere of all seven hydrocarbons in quartz sand, lateritic red earth, and floodplain soil were close and higher compared to the yellow earth and black soil. This study aims to identify sources of groundwater contamination in a refinery area using integrated compound-specific stable isotope analysis (CSIA), oil fingerprinting techniques, hydrogeological data, and distillation analysis. The investigations focused on determination of the origin of benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes (BTEX), and aliphatic hydrocarbons as well. Groundwater and floating oil samples were collected from extraction wells for analysis. Results indicate presence of active leaks in both the northern and southern zones. In the northern zone, toluene was found to primarily originate from oil products like aviation turbine kerosene (ATK or aviation fuel), kerosene, regular gasoline, and diesel fuel. Additionally, stable isotope ratios of carbon and hydrogen for ethylbenzene, o-xylene (ortho xylene) and p-xylene (para xylene) in zone A suggested the pollution originated from gasoline within the northern zone. The origin of super gasoline (with higher octane) identified in southern zone using δ 13 C and δ 2 H values of toluene in the floating oil and groundwater samples. Further, biodegradation of toluene likely occurred in southern zone according to δ 13 C and δ 2 H. The findings underscore the critical importance of integrating CSIA and fingerprinting techniques to effectively address the challenges of source identification and relying solely on each method independently is insufficient. Accordingly, comparing the GC-MS results of floating oil samples with ATK and jet fuel (JP4) standards can be effectively utilized for source differentiation. However, this method showed no practical application to distinguish different types of diesel or gasoline. The accuracy and reliability of source identification of BTEX compounds may significantly improve when hydrogeological data incorporates with stable isotopes analysis. Background: We investigated the correlation between urine VOC metabolites and airway function in children exposed to anthropogenic volatile organic compounds (VOCs), notable pollutants impacting respiratory health., Methods: Out of 157 respondents, 141 completed skin prick tests, spirometry, IOS, and provided urine samples following the International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood (ISAAC)-related questions. Allergic sensitization was assessed through skin prick tests, and airway functions were evaluated using spirometry and impulse oscillometry (IOS). Forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1), forced vital capacity (FVC) was recorded and FEV1/FVC ratio was calculated. Airway mechanics parameters including respiratory resistance at 5 Hz (Rrs5) mean respiratory resistance between 5 Hz and 20 Hz (Rrs5-20), were also recorded. Urine concentrations of metabolites of benzene, ethylbenzene, toluene, xylene, styrene, formaldehyde, carbon-disulfide were analyzed by gas chromatography/tandem mass spectroscopy., Results: The median age at study participation was 7.1 (SD 0.3) years. Muconic acid (benzene metabolites) and o-methyl-hippuric acid (xylene metabolites) above medians were associated with a significant increase in Rrs5 (muconic acid: aβ = 0.150, p  = .002; o-methyl-hippuric acid: aβ = 0.143, p  = .023) and a decrease in FEV1/FVC (o-methyl-hippuric acid: aβ = 0.054, p  = .028) compared to those below median. No associations were observed for Rrs5-20 and FEV1 between the groups categorized as above and below the median (all parameter p values > .05)., Conclusions: Elevated levels of benzene and xylene metabolites were associated with a significant increase in Rrs5 and a decrease in FEV1/FVC, related to increased resistance and restrictive lung conditions compared to individuals with concentrations below the median.

Despite demonstrated disparities in environmental chemical exposures by racial identity, no Canadian study has systematically assessed the feasibility of using a nationally representative dataset to examine differences in chemical concentrations by race. We assessed the feasibility and constraints of analysing chemical exposures in racial populations, including visible minorities and populations of Indigenous identity, using biomonitoring data collected through the Canadian Health Measures Survey (CHMS). Our primary objectives were to assess the ability to 1) generate geometric means and percentiles of chemical concentrations for racial populations by age or sex, 2) statistically compare concentrations among racial populations, and 3) calculate time trends of concentrations by race. We conducted these analyses for several priority chemicals: lead, cadmium, benzene, bisphenol A (BPA), and di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP). Survey participants self-identified as one of the following: White, Black, East and Southeast Asian, South Asian, Middle Eastern, Latin American, First Nations, Metis, and Inuit. Analyses were conducted for individual and combined cycles of the CHMS. Using data from the latest CHMS cycle in which each chemical was measured, we observed that sample sizes were sufficient to report geometric mean concentrations for all races except Inuit. Due to privacy considerations associated with small sample sizes, the 5th and 95th percentile concentrations could not be consistently reported for all racial populations in this analysis. While we were able to statistically compare concentrations among racial populations, the analysis was constrained by the limited number of statistical degrees of freedom available in a single CHMS cycle. Both of these constraints were alleviated by combining multiple cycles of data. The analysis of time trends was less subject to privacy and statistical limitations; we were able to calculate time trends of chemical concentrations for all racial populations. Benzene, as a common volatile organic compound, represents serious risk to human health and environment even at low level concentration. There is an urgent concern on visualized, sensitive and real time detection of benzene gases. Herein, by doping Fe 3+ and graphene quantum dots (GQDs), a cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) chiral nematic film was designed with dual response of photonic colors and fluorescence to benzene gas. The chiral nematic CNC/Fe/GQDs film could respond to benzene gas changes by reversible motion. Moreover, chiral nematic film also displays reversible responsive to humidity changes. The resulting CNC/Fe/GQDs chiral nematic film showed excellent response performance at benzene gas concentrations of 0-250 mg/m 3 . The maximal reflection wavelength film red shifted from 576 to 625 nm. Furthermore, structural color of CNC/Fe/GQDs chiral nematic film change at 44 %, 54 %, 76 %, 87 %, and 99 % relative humidity. Interestingly, due to the stability of GQDs to water molecules, CNC/Fe/GQDs chiral nematic film exhibit fluorescence response to benzene gas even in high humidity (RH = 99 %) environment. Besides, we further developed a smartphone-based response network system for quantitively determinization and signal transformation. Burning incenses and scented candles may provide harmful chemicals. Although many studies have evaluated volatile organic chemicals emitted by their use and related health risks, extension of our understanding for guiding appropriate use under various use conditions is necessary. In this study, emission characteristics of commercial incenses and scented candles were evaluated in a laboratory chamber using real-time measurement and the time-weighted average exposure concentrations of monoaromatic compounds and monoterpenes were assessed using passive samplers while volunteers living in a studio apartment use them. After burning incense, the average levels of benzene increased from 1.4 to 100 μg m -3 . The presence of a wood core in commercial incense products was the main cause of high benzene emission by burning them although the increase in benzene was also influenced by factors such as the brand of the products, the number of incense sticks burned, the duration of each burning session, and ventilation period. Electrical warming of scented candles increased the levels of monoterpenes by factors of 16-30 on average. Spectroscopy of magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) provides enhanced information on molecular structure and a more reliable assignment of spectral bands than absorption alone. Theoretical modeling can significantly enhance the information obtained from experimental spectra. In the present study, the time dependent density functional theory is employed to model the lowest-energy benzene transitions, in particular to investigate the role of the Rydberg states and vibrational interference in spectral intensities. The effect of solvent is explored on model benzene-methane clusters. For the lowest-energy excitation, the vibrational sub-structure of absorption and MCD spectra is modeled within the harmonic approximation, providing a very good agreement with the experiment. The simulations demonstrate that the Rydberg states have a much stronger effect on the MCD intensities than on the absorption, and a very diffuse basis set must be used to obtain reliable results. The modeling also indicates that the Rydberg-like states and associated transitions may persist in solutions. Continuum-like solvent models are thus not suitable for their modeling; solvent-solute clusters appear to be more appropriate, providing they are large enough. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Initial volatile concentration (C s0 ) is a crucial parameter for the migration and diffusion of volatile organic pollutants (VOCs) from the soil to the atmosphere. The acquisition of C s0 is, however, time-consuming and labor-intensive. This study developed a prediction model for C s0 based on theoretical analysis and experimental simulations. The model was established by correlating the molecular kinetic and sorption potential energy. The pore structure and pore size distribution of the soil were analyzed based on the fractal theory of porous media, followed by calculating the sorption potential energy corresponding to each pore size. It was observed that the pore size distribution of soil influenced BTEX (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene) volatilization by impacting sorption potential energy. The soil parameters, such as organic matter and soil moisture content, and the initial concentration and physical properties of BTEX were coupled to the prediction model to ensure its practicability. Red soil was finally used to verify the accuracy and applicability of the model. The experimental and predicted values' maximum relative and root-mean-square errors were determined to be 24.2% and 11.7%, respectively. The model provides a simple, rapid, and accurate assessment of soil vapor emission content due to BTEX contamination. The ubiquitous use of mosquito repellents in homes across Asia, Africa, and South America is related with human exposure to indoor volatile organic compounds (VOCs). There are three primary types of mosquito repellents: those in the form of coils, mats, and liquids. The repellent mechanisms of these products are distinct, resulting in the generation of varying types of VOCs during the repellent process. In this study, the emission characteristics of commercial coil-, mat-, and liquid-type mosquito repellents were observed in a laboratory chamber using real-time measurement. A previously developed personal passive sampler, ePTFE PS, was used to quantify personal exposure to indoor VOCs while 86 volunteers habitually used those three representative types for 3 h in their residence. Notable increase of indoor benzene was observed for coil- and mat-type mosquito repellents, while α-pinene concentration increased significantly following the use of liquid-type mosquito repellent. The average incremental cancer risks for benzene were 10 -6 to 10 -4 for adults following the use of coil- and mat-type mosquito repellents. The average non-cancer risks for all chemicals were <1 after the use of three types of mosquito repellents. Benzene is associated with diverse occupational and public health hazards. It exhibits an ability to rapidly permeate the skin and contaminate water and food sources, leading to dermal and ingestion exposures. Despite numerous studies examining the associations between benzene and various indicators of harm, the findings have yielded inconsistent results. Furthermore, relying solely on air concentration as a measure of benzene exposure is limited, as it fails to account for internal exposure dose and individual susceptibility. This study aimed to conduct a comprehensive review in order to present current knowledge on benzene biomarkers and their significance in evaluating exposure levels and associated health hazards. The search methodology adhered to the PRISMA guidelines and involved the application of specific inclusion and exclusion criteria across multiple databases including PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science. Two researchers independently extracted and evaluated the relevant data based on predetermined criteria. Following the screening process, a total of 80 articles were considered eligible out of the initially retrieved 1053 articles after undergoing screening and assessment for inclusion. As the level of exposure decreased, specific biomarkers demonstrated a gradual increase in limitations, including heightened background concentrations and vulnerability to confounding factors. The advancement of sampling and analysis techniques will yield new biomarkers. Background: In the regeneration of waste oil, a strategical technological process for the European Union circular economy action plan, exhausted oils are regenerated to produce high performing oil bases. Aim of this work was to assess the exposure to benzene in plant workers during ordinary activities., Methods: 59 workers, potentially exposed to benzene, and 9 administrative workers from an Italian plant were monitored for the whole work shift with personal air samplers; urinary benzene (BEN-U) and S-phenyl mercapturic acid (SPMA) were measured by mass spectrometry methods in end-shift urine samples. Different job tasks were identified among workers., Results: Median (minimum-maximum) airborne exposures to benzene were <0.9 (<0.9-6.3) and <0.9 (<0.9-0.9) µg/m3, BEN-U and SPMA levels were 0.094 (<0.015-3.095) µg/L and 0.15 (<0.10-9.67) µg/g crt and 0.086 (0.034-0.712) µg/L and <0.10 (<0.10-3.19) µg/g creatinine in workers and administrative workers, respectively. No differences were found among job tasks and between workers and administrative workers, while higher levels were found in smokers than in non-smokers. For all job tasks, the exposure to benzene was always below occupational limit values., Conclusions: This study has investigated for the first time the exposure to benzene of workers employed in the re-refining of exhaust oil. The results showed that normal production activities in regenerating used oils do not pose a risk of exposure to benzene in workers.

Climatic and meteorological conditions are among the factors affecting the ambient concentrations of BTEX compounds. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to interrogate the seasonal effect of climatic conditions on the concentrations of BTEX compounds. Three electronic bibliographic databases including Scopus, PubMed, and Web of Science were systematically searched up to November 14, 2023. The search algorithm followed PRISMA guidance and consisted of three groupings of keywords and their possible combinations. For various climatic conditions, the overall mean and 95% confidence interval (CI) of effect size related to BTEX concentrations were calculated using a random-effect model. In total, 104 articles were included for evaluation in this review. BTEX ambient concentration was higher in winter (ranging from 36 out of 79 relevant studies for xylene to 52 out of 97 relevant studies for benzene) followed by summer and autumn. For humidity conditions, the highest exposure values for BTEX were detected for rainy weather (ranging from 3 out of 5 relevant studies for toluene and xylene to 4 out of 5 relevant studies for benzene and ethyl benzene) compared to dry conditions. The pooled concentration (μg/m 3 ) of benzene, toluene, ethyl benzene, and xylene were computed as 2.61, 7.12, 2.21, and 3.61 in spring, 2.13, 7.53, 1.61, and 2.75 in summer, 3.04, 9.59, 3.14, and 5.50 in autumn, and 3.56, 8.71, 2.35, and 3.91 in winter, respectively. Moreover, the pooled concentrations (μg/m 3 ) of BTEX were measured as 2.98, 7.22, 1.90, and 3.03 in dry weather and 3.15, 6.30, 2.14, and 3.86 in rainy or wet weather, respectively. In most seasons, the ambient concentrations of BTEX were higher in countries with low and middle incomes and in Middle Eastern countries and East/Southeast Asia compared to those in other regions (P < 0.001). The increasing concentrations of BTEX in winter and autumn followed by the summer season and during rainy/wet weather appear to be reasonably consistent despite variations in study methods, quality, or geography. Gasoline station attendants are exposed to numerous chemicals that might have genotoxic and carcinogenic potential, such as benzene in fuel vapor and particulate matter and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in vehicle exhaust emission. According to IARC, benzene and diesel particulates are Group 1 human carcinogens, and gasoline has been classified as Group 2A "possibly carcinogenic to humans." At gas stations, self-service is not implemented in Turkey; fuel-filling service is provided entirely by employees, and therefore they are exposed to those chemicals in the workplace during all working hours. Genetic monitoring of workers with occupational exposure to possible genotoxic agents allows early detection of cancer. We aimed to investigate the genotoxic damage due to exposures in gasoline station attendants in Turkey. Genotoxicity was evaluated by the Comet, chromosomal aberration, and cytokinesis-block micronucleus assays in peripheral blood lymphocytes. Gasoline station attendants ( n = 53) had higher tail length, tail intensity, and tail moment values than controls ( n = 61). In gasoline station attendants ( n = 46), the frequencies of chromatid gaps, chromosome gaps, and total aberrations were higher compared with controls ( n = 59). Increased frequencies of micronuclei and nucleoplasmic bridges were determined in gasoline station attendants ( n = 47) compared with controls ( n = 40). Factors such as age, duration of working, and smoking did not have any significant impact on genotoxic endpoints. Only exposure increased genotoxic damage in gasoline station attendants independently from demographic and clinical characteristics. In the majority of occupational settings within China, the concentrations of benzene are observed to fall markedly below the demarcated detection thresholds. Employing traditional risk assessment models, the presence of exceptionally low airborne benzene exposure concentrations may infuse heightened degrees of uncertainty. Consequently, the necessity arises to investigate risk assessment methodologies more apt for the prevalent exposure environment among employees. In the present study, a pharmacokinetic model premised on urinary benzene metabolites (S-PMA and t, t-MA) was employed to ascertain a more precise daily airborne benzene exposure concentration per individual. This value was integrated into the linear multistage model as the 'internal exposure concentration'. In conjunction with the U.S National Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) inhalation risk assessment model predicated on the external exposure concentration, the Singapore Ministry of Manpower's (MOM) model, and the linear multistage (LMS) model, the carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic effects of benzene were evaluated for 1781 benzene-exposed employees across 76 enterprises in Jiangsu Province. Findings suggest that in the linear multilevel model assessment, the cancer risk levels based on t, t-MA and S-PMA were higher in the printing and recording media reproduction industry, automobile manufacturing industry, general equipment manufacturing industry and the furniture manufacturing industry (median 2.842 × 10 -4 , 2.819 × 10 -4 , 2.809 × 10 -4 , and 2.678 × 10 -4 ), which align more consistently with the actual benzene exposure circumstances of each industry's study participants, with overall risk levels calculated by the linear multistage model exceeding those of the EPA inhalation risk assessment model and the MOM model. This implies that the linear multistage model of internal exposure, based on the reciprocal of benzene biomarkers S-PMA and t, t-MA for airborne benzene exposure, presents enhanced sensitivity and suitability for the current occupational health risk assessment of workers. Background: Industrial facilities are not located uniformly across communities in the United States, but how the burden of exposure to carcinogenic air emissions may vary across population characteristics is unclear. We evaluated differences in carcinogenic industrial pollution among major sociodemographic groups in the United States and Puerto Rico., Methods: We evaluated cross-sectional associations of population characteristics including race and ethnicity, educational attainment, and poverty at the census tract level with point-source industrial emissions of 21 known human carcinogens using regulatory data from the US Environmental Protection Agency. Odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals comparing the highest emissions (tertile or quintile) to the referent group (zero emissions [ie, nonexposed]) for all sociodemographic characteristics were estimated using multinomial, population density-adjusted logistic regression models., Results: In 2018, approximately 7.4 million people lived in census tracts with nearly 12 million pounds of carcinogenic air releases. The odds of tracts having the greatest burden of benzene, 1,3-butadiene, ethylene oxide, formaldehyde, trichloroethylene, and nickel emissions compared with nonexposed were 10%-20% higher for African American populations, whereas White populations were up to 18% less likely to live in tracts with the highest emissions. Among Hispanic and Latino populations, odds were 16%-21% higher for benzene, 1,3-butadiene, and ethylene oxide. Background: Gasoline-powered vehicles and equipment are an important source of air pollution in California. Many gasoline-related pollutants pose significant health concerns. The California Air Resources Board strictly regulates the state's gasoline formulation and vehicle emissions., Objective: To investigate exposure trends for gasoline-related air pollutants between 1996 and 2014, capturing the period before and after the removal of methyl t-butyl ether (MTBE)., Methods: We identified gasoline-related chemicals with known or suspected health concerns and adequate ambient air monitoring data. Average exposures to the general public were estimated from 1996 to 2014 in five major air basins and statewide. We determined the fractions of exposures attributable to gasoline use and evaluated cancer and non-cancer risks for chemicals with available cancer potencies and health reference values., Results: We found that average gasoline-attributable cancer risks for the general California population from the most highly emitted carcinogens (acetaldehyde, benzene, 1,3-butadiene, and formaldehyde) declined by over 80% between 1996 and 2014. This decline occurred despite roughly constant statewide gasoline sales, an increase in vehicle miles traveled, and an approximately 10% increase in vehicle registrations over this same period. Naphthalene, measured as a volatile organic compound (VOC), was the most abundant gasoline-related polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH). From 1996 to 2014, gasoline-attributable cancer risks for naphthalene were estimated to drop approximately threefold in the South Coast Air Basin. Exposures to gasoline-related chemicals associated with non-cancer health effects, such as chronic respiratory toxicity or neurotoxicity, were generally below levels of concern. Structural firefighters are exposed to a complex set of contaminants and combustion byproducts, including volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Additionally, recent studies have found structural firefighters' skin may be exposed to multiple chemical compounds via permeation or penetration of chemical byproducts through or around personal protective equipment (PPE). This mannequin-based study evaluated the effectiveness of four different PPE conditions with varying contamination control measures (incorporating PPE interface design features and particulate blocking materials) to protect against ingress of several VOCs in a smoke exposure chamber. We also investigated the effectiveness of long-sleeve base layer clothing to provide additional protection against skin contamination. Outside gear air concentrations were measured from within the smoke exposure chamber at the breathing zone, abdomen, and thigh heights. Personal air concentrations were collected from mannequins under PPE at the same general heights and under the base layer at abdomen and thigh heights. Sampled contaminants included benzene, toluene, styrene, and naphthalene. Results suggest that VOCs can readily penetrate the ensembles. Workplace protection factors (WPFs) were near one for benzene and toluene and increased with increasing molecular weight of the contaminants. WPFs were generally lower under hoods and jackets compared to under pants. For all PPE conditions, the pants appeared to provide the greatest overall protection against ingress of VOCs, but this may be due in part to the lower air concentrations toward the floor (and cuffs of pants) relative to the thigh-height outside gear concentrations used in calculating the WPFs. Providing added interface control measures and adding particulate-blocking materials appeared to provide a protective benefit against less-volatile chemicals, like naphthalene and styrene.

As a carcinogenic and highly neurotoxic hazardous gas, benzene vapor is particularly difficult to be distinguished in BTEX (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylene) atmosphere and be detected in low concentrations due to its chemical inertness. Herein, we develop a depth-related pore structure in Cu-TCPP-Cu to thermodynamically and kinetically enhance the adsorption of benzene vapor and realize the detection of ultralow-temperature benzene gas. We find that the in-plane π electronic nature and proper pore sizes in Cu-TCPP-Cu can selectively induce the adsorption and diffusion of BTEX. Interestingly, the theoretical calculations (including density functional theory (DFT) and grand canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) simulations) exhibit that benzene molecules are preferred to adsorb and array as a consecutive arrangement mode in the Cu-TCPP-Cu pore, while the TEX (toluene, ethylbenzene, xylene) dominate the jumping arrangement model. The differences in distribution behaviors can allow adsorption and diffusion of more benzene molecules within limited room. Furthermore, the optimal pore-depth range (60-65 nm) of Cu-TCPP-Cu allows more exposure of active sites and hinders the gas-blocking process. The optimized sensor exhibits ultrahigh sensitivity to benzene vapor (155 Hz/μg@1 ppm), fast response time (less than 10 s), extremely low limit of detection (65 ppb), and excellent selectivity (83%). Our research thus provides a fundamental understanding to design and optimize two-dimensional metal-organic framework (MOF)-based gas sensors.

Epidemiological evidence concerning effects of simultaneous exposure to noise and benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylene, and styrene (BTEXS) on renal function remains uncertain. In 2020, a cross-sectional study was conducted among 1160 petrochemical workers in southern China to investigate effects of their co-exposure on estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) and mild renal impairment (MRI). Noise levels were assessed using cumulative noise exposure (CNE). Urinary biomarkers for BTEXS were quantified. We found the majority of workers had exposure levels to noise and BTEXS below China's occupational exposure limits. CNE, trans, trans-muconic acid (tt-MA), and the sum of mandelic acid and phenylglyoxylic acid (PGMA) were linearly associated with decreased eGFR and increased MRI risk. We observed U-shaped associations for both N-acetyl-S-phenyl-L-cysteine (SPMA) and o-methylhippuric acid (2-MHA) with MRI. In further assessing the joint effect of BTEXS (β, -0.164 [95% CI, -0.296 to -0.033]) per quartile increase in all BTEXS metabolites on eGFR using quantile g-computation models, we found SPMA, tt-MA, 2-MHA, and PGMA played pivotal roles. Additionally, the risk of MRI associated with tt-MA was more pronounced in workers with lower CNE levels (P = 0.004). Multiplicative interaction analysis revealed antagonisms of CNE and PGMA on MRI risk (P = 0.034). Thus, our findings reveal negative dose-effect associations between noise and BTEXS mixture exposure and renal function in petrochemical workers. With the exception of toluene, benzene, xylene, ethylbenzene, and styrene are all concerning pollutants for renal dysfunction. Background: Comprehensive research on the effects of individual benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes (BTEX) and their mixture measured in blood samples, on cardiovascular diseases (CVD) and related risk factors among the general population is limited., Objectives: To investigate the effects of blood individual and mixed BTEX on total CVD and its subtypes, lipid profiles, and white blood cell (WBC) count., Methods: Survey-weighted multivariate logistic regression was used to examine the associations between blood individual and mixed BTEX with CVD and its subtypes in 17,007 participants from NHANES 1999-2018. The combined effect of BTEX mixture on CVD was estimated using weighted quantile sum modeling and quantile g-computation. Weighted multivariate linear regression assessed the effects of BTEX on lipid profiles and WBC, including its five-part differential count., Results: In comparison to the reference quartile of BTEX mixture, individuals in the highest quartile had a significantly increased adjusted odds ratio of CVD risk (1.64, 95 % CI: 1.23 to 2.19, P for trend = 0.008). Positive associations were observed for benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and m-/p-xylene, demonstrating a monotonically increasing exposure-response relationship. Mixed BTEX was associated with congestive heart failure (CHF), angina pectoris, and heart attack. Individual benzene, toluene, and ethylbenzene were associated with CHF, while toluene, ethylbenzene, and all xylene isomers were linked to angina pectoris. Benzene, toluene, and o-xylene were associated with heart attack. Both mixed and individual BTEX showed positive associations with triglycerides, cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein, and WBC, including its five-part differential count, but a negative relationship with high-density lipoprotein. Adjusting the local environment of single-atom catalysts (SACs) is a promising approach to enhance the catalytic performance in benzene oxidation reaction (BOR). Herein, a range of Co-based SACs with N 2/3/4 -coordination numbers on graphene were constructed to investigate the effect of the electronic structure of SACs on BOR via density function theory (DFT). Expectedly, the electron density and charge amount of the Co active sites in the overall reaction path on the CoN x C y catalyst can be regulated by coordination environment. In particular, the as-formed *O=CoN 4 =O* intermediate displays the strongest electron interaction between Co atom and O*, thus O* has the largest electron density and the most negative charge number, resulting in a lower energy barrier of 0.69 eV for the rate-determining step of C O bond formation. The methodology in this work provides a certain theory supporting and guidance for developing highly efficient SACs with controllable coordination structures to enhance hydrocarbon oxidation reactions. Introduction: In Nigeria, because of increasing population, urbanization, industrialization, and auto-mobilization, petrol is the most everyday non-edible commodity, and it is the leading petroleum product traded at the proliferating Nigeria's petrol stations (NPSs). However, because of inadequate occupational health and safety (OHS) regulatory measures, working at NPSs exposes petrol station workers (PSWs) to a large amount of hazardous benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene (BTEX) compounds., Methods: Studies on BTEX exposures among Nigerian PSWs are scarce. Thus, constraints in quantifying the health risks of BTEX limit stakeholders' ability to design practical risk assessment and risk control strategies. This paper reviews studies on the OHS of Nigerian PSWs at the NPSs., Results: Although knowledge, attitude, and practices on OHS in NPSs vary from one Nigeria's study setting to another, generally, safety practices, awareness about hazards and personal protective equipment (PPE), and the use of PPE among PSWs fell below expectations. Additionally, air quality at NPSs was poor, with a high content of BTEX and levels of carbon monoxide, hydrogen sulfide, particulate matter, and formaldehyde higher than the World Health Organization guideline limits., Discussion: Currently, regulatory bodies' effectiveness and accountability in safeguarding OHS at NPSs leave much to be desired. Understanding the OHS of NPSs would inform future initiatives, policies, and regulations that would promote the health and safety of workers at NPSs. Groundwater contamination from abandoned pesticide sites is a prevalent issue in China. To address this problem, natural attenuation (NA) of pollutants has been increasingly employed as a management strategy for abandoned pesticide sites. However, limited studies have focused on the long-term NA process of co-existing organic pollutants in abandoned pesticide sites by an integrated approach. In this study, the NA of benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene (BTEX), and chlorobenzenes (CBs) in groundwater of a retired industry in China was systematically investigated during the monitoring period from June 2016 to December 2021. The findings revealed that concentrations of BTEX and CBs were effectively reduced, and their NA followed first-order kinetics with different rate constants. The sulfate-reducing bacteria, nitrate-reducing bacteria, fermenting bacteria, aromatic hydrocarbon metabolizing bacteria, and reductive dechlorinating bacteria were detected in groundwater. It was observed that distinct environmental parameters played a role in shaping both overall and key bacterial communities. ORP (14.72%) and BTEX (12.89%) were the main drivers for variations of the whole and key functional microbial community, respectively. Moreover, BTEX accelerated reductive dechlorination. Furthermore, BTEX and CBs exhibited significant enrichment of 13 C, ranging from +2.9 to +27.3‰, demonstrating their significance in situ biodegradation. Assessing human health risks associated with inhalation exposure of volatile chemical substances (VCSs) volatilized from contaminated soil requires quantitative evaluation of volatilization fluxes (VFs) and an understanding of how environmental factors impact VF generation. We developed a numerical model that considers advection-dispersion and VCSs volatilization in unsaturated soil, enabling VF prediction through parameter optimization using soil column tests. We conducted parametric analyses to assess how key parameters, such as soil particle size, contamination depth, temperature, and surface soil thickness affect VF generation. By analyzing VCS transport near the ground surface, we uncovered the mechanisms underlying VF generation. We also identified characteristic differences in VF generation behavior linked to soil particle size and gas saturation at the ground surface. Under specific soil particle size conditions, significant VF generation occurred even when contamination was deep underground. This was primarily observed when capillary effect was pronounced, and VCSs continued to be supplied to the ground surface through upward advection. Considering the significant impact of VF generation on human health, our parametric study provides valuable insights into relationships between different parameters and VF behavior, especially under varying ground surface temperatures and surface soil thicknesses. This study contributes to developing effective remediation and risk-reduction strategies. Industrial disasters have caused hazardous air pollution and public health impacts. Response officials have developed limited exposure guidelines to direct them during the event; often, guidelines are outdated and may not represent relevant elevated-exposure periods. The 2019 Intercontinental Terminals Company (ITC) fire in Houston, Texas led to large-scale releases of benzene and presented a public health threat. This incident highlights the need for effective response and nimble, rapid public health communication. We developed a data-driven visualization tool to store, display, and interpret ambient benzene concentrations to assist health officials during environmental emergencies. Guidance values to interpret risk from acute exposure to benzene were updated using recent literature that also considers exposure periodicity. The visualization platform can process data from different sampling instruments and air monitors automatically, and displays information publicly in real time, along with the associated risk information and action recommendations. The protocol was validated by applying it retrospectively to the ITC event. The new guidance values are 6-30 times lower than those derived by the Texas regulatory agency. Fixed-site monitoring data, assessed using the protocol and revised thresholds, indicated that eight shelter-in-place and 17 air-quality alerts may have been considered. At least one of these shelter-in-place alerts corresponded to prolonged, elevated benzene concentrations (~1000 ppb). This new tool addresses essential gaps in the timely communication of air pollution measurements, provides context to understand potential health risks from exposure to benzene, and provides a clear protocol for local officials in responding to industrial air releases of benzene. Objectives. The present study aimed to assess whether occupational exposure to low concentrations of benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylene (BTEX) is associated with color vision impairment. Methods. We queried PubMed, Scopus, Embase, Web of Science and ProQuest as the main databases, as well as gray literature such as Google Scholar. A random-effects model was used to assess relative risk. A funnel plot was created to assess publication bias. Meta-regression analysis was applied to identify variables that explain the between-study variation in the reported risk estimate. Results. An overall standardized mean difference of 0.529 (95% confidence interval [0.269, 0.788]; p  < 0.0001) was obtained in the random-effects model, which corresponded to a medium-size effect. Duration and the levels of exposure to benzene, toluene and xylene were the significant predictors of the magnitude of the combined risk estimate. Chronic exposure to low levels of BTEX was associated with dyschromatopsia determined by the color confusion index. Conclusions . The impairments can occur even at exposures lower than the occupational exposure limits of BTEX. However, there are several flaws in the determination of workers' exposure, which did not allow to establish how low a level of these chemicals can cause color vision impairment.

African American women in the United States have a high risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes. DNA methylation is a potential mechanism by which exposure to BTEX (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes) may cause adverse pregnancy outcomes. Data are from the Maternal Stress Study, which recruited African American women in the second trimester of pregnancy from February 2009 to June 2010. DNA methylation was measured in archived DNA from venous blood collected in the second trimester. Trimester-specific exposure to airshed BTEX was estimated using maternal self-reported addresses and geospatial models of ambient air pollution developed as part of the Geospatial Determinants of Health Outcomes Consortium. Among the 64 women with exposure and outcome data available, 46 differentially methylated regions (DMRs) were associated with BTEX exposure (FDR adjusted p -value < 0.05) using a DMR-based epigenome-wide association study approach. Overall, 89% of DMRs consistently exhibited hypomethylation with increasing BTEX exposure. Biological pathway analysis identified 11 enriched pathways, with the top 3 involving gamma-aminobutyric acid receptor signaling, oxytocin in brain signaling, and the gustation pathway. These findings highlight the potential impact of BTEX on DNA methylation in pregnant women.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene (BTEX) are the most persistent and toxic organic contaminants often found co-contaminated in anthropogenic and petrochemical industrial sites. Therefore, an experiment was performed for the safe biodegradation of benzene and benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) through thermally-enhanced biodegradation, and to explore the influence of elevated thermal treatments on microbial diversity and composition. The results revealed that elevated thermal treatments (15 to 45 °C) significantly enhanced the diversity of both bacteria and fungi. The composition analysis revealed that short-term and long-term elevated temperature conditions can directly enhance the specificity of microorganisms that play a crucial role in the biodegradation of benzene and BaP co-contaminated soil. Moreover, the indirect role of elevated temperature conditions on microbial compositions was through the fluctuations of soil properties, especially soil pH, moisture, TOC, potassium, phosphorous, total Fe, Fe(II), and Fe(III). In addition, the correlation analyses revealed that thermal exposure enhances the synergistic association (fungal-fungal, fungal-bacterial, bacterial-bacterial) of microbes to degrade the toxic contaminants and to cope with harsh environmental conditions. Electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) are battery-powered devices introduced to the market as safer alternatives to combustible cigarettes. Upon heating the electronic liquid (e-liquid), aerosols are released, including several toxicants, such as volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Benzene has been given great attention as a major component of the VOCs group as it increases cancer risk upon inhalation. In this study, several basic e-liquids were tested for benzene emissions. The Aerosol Lab Vaping Instrument was used to generate aerosols from ENDS composed of different e-liquid combinations: vegetable glycerin (VG), propylene glycol (PG), nicotine (nic), and benzoic acid (BA). The tested mixtures included PG, PG + nic + BA, VG, VG + nic + BA, 30/70 PG/VG, and 30/70 PG/VG + nic + BA. A carboxen polydimethylsiloxane fiber for a solid-phase microextraction was placed in a gas cell to trap benzene emitted from a Sub-Ohm Minibox C device. Benzene was adsorbed on the fiber during the puffing process and for an extra 15 min until it reached equilibrium, and then it was determined using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Benzene was quantified in VG but not in PG or the 30/70 PG/VG mixtures. However, benzene concentration increased in all tested mixtures upon the addition of nicotine benzoate salt. Interestingly, benzene was emitted at the highest concentration when BA was added to PG. However, lower concentrations were found in the 30/70 PG/VG and VG mixtures with BA. Both VG and BA are sources of benzene. Enhanced emissions, however, are mostly noticeable when BA is mixed with PG and not VG.

This study aimed to examine the impacts of single and multiple air pollutants (AP) on the severity of breast cancer (BC). Data of 1148 diagnosed BC cases (2008-2016) were obtained from the Cancer Research Center and private oncologist offices in Tehran, Iran. Ambient PM 10 , SO 2 , NO, NO 2 , NO X , benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, m-xylene, p-xylene, o-xylene, and BTEX data were obtained from previously developed land use regression models. Associations between pollutants and stage of BC were assessed by multinomial logistic regression models. An increase of 10 μg/m 3 in ethylbenzene, o-xylene, m-xylene, and 10 ppb of NO corresponded to 10.41 (95% CI 1.32-82.41), 4.07 (1.46-11.33), 2.89 (1.08-7.73) and 1.08 (1.00-1.15) increase in the odds of stage I versus non-invasive BC, respectively. Benzene (OR, odds ratio = 1.16, 95% CI 1.01-1.33) and o-xylene (OR = 1.18, 1.02-1.38) were associated with increased odds of incidence of BC stages III & IV versus non-invasive stages. BC stage I and stage III&IV in women living in low SES areas was associated with significantly higher levels of benzene, ethylbenzene, o-xylene, and m-xylene. The highest multiple-air-pollutants quartile was associated with a higher odds of stage I BC (OR = 3.16) in patients under 50 years old. Benzene is a commonly used industrial chemical that is a significant environmental pollutant. Occupational health specialists and industrial toxicologists are concerned with determining the exact amount of exposure to chemicals in the workplace. There are two main approaches to assess chemical exposure; air monitoring and biological monitoring. Air monitoring has limitations, which biological monitoring overcomes and could be used as a supplement to it. However, there are several factors that influence biological monitoring results. It would be possible to assess exposure more accurately if these factors were taken into account. This study aimed to review published papers for recognizing and discussing parameters that could affect benzene biological monitoring. Two types of effects can be distinguished: positive and negative effects. Factors causing positive effects will increase the metabolite concentration in urine more than expected. Furthermore, the parameters that decrease the urinary metabolite level were referred to as false negatives. Diluted bitumen (DB), one of the most transported unconventional crude oils in Canada's pipelines, raises public concerns due to its potential spillage into freshwater environments. This study aimed to compare the fate and behaviour of DB versus conventional crude (CC) in a simulated warm freshwater environment. An equivalent of 10 L of either DB or CC was spilled into 1200 L of North Saskatchewan River (NSR) water containing natural NSR sediment (2.4 kg) in a mesoscale spill tank and its fate and behaviour at air/water temperatures of 18 °C/24 °C were monitored for 56 days. Oil mass distribution analysis showed that 42.3 wt % of CC and 63.6 wt% of DB resided in the oil slicks at the end of 56-day tests, consisting mainly high molecular weight (HMW) compounds (i.e., resins and asphaltenes). The lost oil contained mainly low molecular weight (LMW) compounds (i.e., light saturates and some aromatics) into the atmosphere, water column, and sediment through collective weathering processes. Notably, weathered CC emulsified with water and remained floating until the end, while the weathered DB mat started to lose its buoyancy after 24 days under quiescent conditions and resurfaced once waves were applied. Analysis of the microbial communities of water pre- and post-spills revealed the replacement of indigenous microbial communities with hydrocarbon-degrading species. Exposure to CC reduced the microbial diversity by 12%, while exposure to DB increased the diversity by 10%. The clothes and special equipment of firefighters can be a source of indoor air pollution. Nevertheless, it has not been investigated so far what the scale of the release of various compounds from such materials into the indoor air can be. The following study analysed the results of an experiment involving the passive measurement of concentrations of selected compounds, i.a. benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, m,p-xylene, o-xylene, styrene, isopropylbenzene and n-propylbenzene (BTEXS) in the air of a room where firefighters' special clothing, which had been previously exposed to emissions from simulated fires, was stored. The study included simulations of fires involving three materials: wood, processed wood (OSB/fibreboard) and a mixture of plastics. After being exposed to the simulated fire environment, special clothing (so-called nomex) was placed in a sealed chamber, where passive collection of BTEXS was carried out using tube-type axial passive samplers and a gas chromatograph. Irrespective of which burned material special clothing was exposed to, the compound emitted into the air most intensively was toluene. Immortelle, a revered Mediterranean medicinal plant, is celebrated for its potent essential oil renowned in the cosmetic industry for its skin-enhancing properties. Yet, immortelle hydrosol, an often-overlooked byproduct, holds promise in cosmetics due to its compatibility with polar active ingredients. This study investigates the chemical composition of immortelle hydrosol by employing liquid-liquid extraction (LLE) to transfer volatile organic components into nonpolar solvents. Four solvents - chloroform, dichloromethane, hexane, and benzene - were assessed through ten consecutive extractions from industrially produced immortelle hydrosol. Quantification was achieved using GC analysis with tetradecane as an internal standard. Chloroform emerged as the most efficient solvent, yielding 2447.0 mg/L of volatile compounds, surpassing dichloromethane, hexane, and benzene. Key compounds in immortelle hydrosol included 3-pentanone, 2-methyl-1-butanol, and γ-terpineol. Importantly, the study revealed that a portion of essential oil compounds persists in the hydrosol even after ten LLE cycles, with optimal results achievable in five extractions (~92 % in most cases)., (© 2023 Wiley-VHCA AG, Zurich, Switzerland.)

Oil spill events challenge human health and ecosystem safety, which are priority concerned issues for sustainable development. There is then an increasing demand of tools for ecological risks assessment at contaminated sites. In this study, we introduced two whole-cell bioreporters, ADPWH&#95;alk and ADPWH&#95;recA, to measure the available n-alkanes and the genotoxicities of total petroleum hydrocarbons in soils and groundwater which were contaminated by the Benzene Exceedance Accident in Lanzhou, China. Comparing to traditional chemical analysis methods, the whole-cell bioreporter method could provide risk assessment on cell level within a shorter time and a less cost, which is economical and environment friendly. The highest contents of available alkanes in soil and groundwater were 18,737 mg/kg and 308.4 mg/L, respectively. In addition, the available n-alkanes significantly (p < 0.01) correlated to chemical analysis of total n-alkanes. The highest genotoxicity level was found in soil and groundwater samples with lower TPHs concentration (4338.0 mg/kg and 1.4 mg/L Mitomycin C equivalent), suggesting the significant impacts of geochemical variables and alkane availability on the ecological risks of petroleum contamination. Combining chemical analysis and whole-cell bioreporter results, bioremediation strategies were suggested for groundwater and soils with higher n-alkane availability and lower ecological risks, whereas chemical oxidation were suggested for other contaminated sites. Benzene, toluene, ethyl benzene, and xylene (BTEX) are prevalent pollutants in shoe industry-related workplaces. The aim of this study was to assess exposure to BTEX and their carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risks in shoe-industry-related workplaces. This study was carried out at different shoe manufactures, small shoe workshop units, shoe markets, and shoe stores in Tabriz, Iran in 2021. Personal inhalation exposure to BTEX was measured using the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) 1501 method. Carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risks due to inhalation exposure to BTEX were estimated by United States Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA) method based on Mont Carlo simulation. Results showed that the concentrations of benzene and toluene were higher than the threshold limit value (TLV) in both gluing and non-gluing units of shoe manufactures. The total carcinogenic risk (TCR) due to exposure to benzene and ethyl benzene was considerable in all shoe industry-related workplaces. Also, the hazard index (HI) as a non-carcinogenic index was higher than standard levels in all shoe industry-related workplaces. Therefore, shoe industry-related workers are at cancer and non-cancer risks due to exposure to BTEX. Following the transdisciplinarity trend in science, this study was design to presents a way in which mathematical functions can be used in molecular characterization. Thus, the selected working system is a graphene nanoribbon consisting in 25 fused benzene rings, divided in two sub-systems i.e. unit cell and hypercell. For the two selected sub-systems, first was determined their physico-chemical parameters, than the obtained values were computed using the Heavisade based Gradient function formula, leading to a new set of parameters which can also offers new information about the working system. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are ubiquitous environmental pollutants and have been implicated in adverse health outcomes. In this study, concentrations of 11 VOC metabolites (mVOCs) and three oxidative stress biomarkers (8-oxo-7,8-dihydro-2'-deoxyguanosine, 8-oxo-7,8-dihydro-guanosine, and dityrosine) were determined in 205 urine samples collected from 12 cities across mainland China. Urinary ∑ 11 mVOC concentrations ranged from 498 to 1660 ng/mL, with a geometric mean (GM) value of 1070 ng/mL. The factorial analysis revealed that cooking, solvents, and vehicle emissions were the three primary sources of VOC exposure. A significant regional variation was clearly found in ∑ 11 mVOC concentrations across four regions in China, with high urine VOC concentrations found in North and South China (GM: 1450 and 1340 ng/mL). The multiple linear regression model revealed that most mVOCs were significantly positively correlated with three oxidative stress markers (β range: 0.06-0.22). Mixture effect regression showed that isoprene, crotonaldehyde, acrolein, and benzene were the strongest contributors to oxidative stress. Approximately 80% of the participants have HQ values greater than 1.0 for 1,3-butadiene and benzene, suggesting that their exposure doses were close to potential adverse health effects. Our findings provide comprehensive information on human exposure and potential health risks of VOCs in China.

Upward trend in the use of food supplements urged the assessment of their safety. Eighty-eight liquid herbal supplements collected in Novi Sad (Serbia) in 2018 (36 samples) and 2021 (52 samples) were analysed for the presence of benzoates and sorbates (HPLC-UV) and benzene (HS-GC/MS). Benzoic acid varied from 599 to 9253 mg/kg and sorbic acid between 185 and 1658 mg/kg. The acceptable daily intake of sorbic acid was not reached, but in case of benzoic acid, it was exceeded by 5.3% of the samples. The presence of benzene was confirmed in 41.2% of benzoate preserved supplements (0.9-51.7 µg/kg). Benzene exposure revealed no health concern: maximum hazard quotients ranged from 0.39% (toddlers) to 0.84% (adolescents); minimum margins of exposure were between 35,680 (adolescents) and 77,419 (toddlers); estimates of lifetime cancer risk did not reach one extra cancer case per 100 000 persons. However, measures to mitigate benzene presence in food should be considered.

Background: Volatile organic compounds, mainly BTEX, are among the pollutants of concern in beauty salons and barbershops that threaten both staff personnel and clients' health. This study aimed to determine the concentration of BTEX in barbershops and beauty salons and assess the carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risks based on the actual risk coefficients. Also, possible sources of BTEX were determined., Method: Samples were collected by passive sampling. Quantitative and qualitative measurements of BTEX compounds were performed using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MASS). Subsequently, the health risks were assessed according to the US Environmental Protection Agency. SPSS24 software and positive matrix factorization (PMF) analysis were used for statistical analysis and source apportionment respectively., Results: Toluene is the most abundant compound in beauty salons, with a maximum concentration of 219.4 (μg/m 3 ) in beauty salons. Results indicated that the mean ELCR value estimated for benzene regarding female staff exposure (1.04 × 10 -5 ) was higher than that for men (4.05 × 10 -6 ). Also, ELCR values of ethylbenzene for staff exposure were 2.08 × 10 -6 and 3.8 × 10 -6 for men and women, respectively, and possess possible carcinogenesis risks., Conclusion: Use of solvents and cosmetic products, improper heating systems, and type of service are the sources that probably contribute to BTEX emissions in beauty salons. Pomotrelvir is an orally bioavailable, target antiviral inhibitor of the main protease (M pro ) of coronaviruses, including severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2, the etiological agent of Coronavirus Disease 2019. The pharmacokinetics, metabolism and elimination of two [ 14 C]-labeled microtracers of 5 µ Ci/700 mg pomotrelvir with separate labeling positions (isotopomers), [lactam carbonyl- 14 C-pomotelvir] and [benzene ring-U- 14 C-pomotrelvir], following a single oral dose in healthy adult males was evaluated in two separate cohorts. Pomotrelvir was rapidly absorbed and eliminated primarily through metabolism and subsequently excreted via urine and feces. There were no differences in pomotrelvir pharmacokinetics between the two cohorts. The mean total radioactive dose recovered was 93.8% ( n = 8) in the lactam cohort (58% in urine and 36% in feces) and 94.2% ( n = 8) in the benzene cohort (75% in urine and 19% in feces), with ≥80% of [ 14 C] recovered within 96 hours after dosing. About 5% and 3% of the intact pomotrelvir was recovered in feces and urine, respectively. Eleven major metabolites were detected and characterized using liquid chromatography-accelerator mass spectrometry and liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry methods, with three and six different metabolites elucidated in the samples collected from lactam and benzene cohorts, respectively, and two metabolites observed in both cohorts. The major metabolism pathway of pomotrelvir is through hydrolysis of its peptide bonds followed by phase II conjugations. These results support that the application of two radiolabeled isotopomers provided a comprehensive metabolite profiling analysis and was a successful approach in identifying the major disposition pathways of pomotrelvir that has complex routes of metabolism. SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT: An unconventional approach using two differentially labeled [ 14 C] microtracers, [lactam carbonyl- 14 C-pomotrelvir] and [benzene ring-U- 14 C-pomotrelvir] evaluated the mass balance of orally administered pomotrelvir in healthy adult males in two separate cohorts. The radioactive dose recovered in excreta was about 94% for both cohorts. Background . Benzene is a known human carcinogen. Human exposure to benzene can be assessed by measuring trans, trans -muconic acid (MUCA) in urine. Golestan Province in northeastern Iran has been reported to have high incidence of esophageal cancer linked to the use of tobacco products. This manuscript evaluates the urinary MUCA concentrations among the participants of the Golestan Cohort Study (GCS). Methods . We analyzed MUCA concentration in 177 GCS participants' urine samples and performed nonparametric pairwise multiple comparisons to determine statistically significant difference among six different product use groups. Mixed effects model was fitted on 22 participants who exclusively smoked cigarette and 51 participants who were classified as nonusers. The urinary MUCA data were collected at the baseline and approximately five years later, and intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) was calculated from the model. Results. Compared with nonusers, tobacco smoking was associated with higher urinary MUCA concentrations. Based on the nonparametric test of pairwise multiple comparisons, MUCA concentrations among participants who smoked combusted tobacco products were statistically significantly higher compared to nonusers. Urinary MUCA collected five years apart from the same individuals showed moderate reliability (ICC = 0.41), which was expected given the relatively short half-life (∼6 h) of MUCA. Conclusion. Our study revealed that tobacco smoke was positively associated with increased levels of urinary MUCA concentration, indicating that it is a significant source of benzene exposure among GCS participants.

The proximity of fuel stations to the roads and the activities inside the station can contribute to PM and VOCs and impose health risks on station workers. The study presents the exposure and health risk assessment of the fuel station personnel to total volatile organic compounds (TVOCs) and particulate matter (PM) during refueling operations. TVOCs and PM monitoring were carried out at a fuel station in Chennai, India, for 1 week in March 2021, covering both weekdays and weekends. The health risks were assessed using EPA's health impact assessment methodology. Exposure to TVOCs (3177.39 ± 5450.32 μg/m 3 ) exceeded the EPA standard of 5 μg/m 3 , by more than 500 times, peaking during refueling operations. The average concentrations of PM 10 , PM 2.5 , and PM 1 were 76.55 ± 23.08 μg/m 3 , 41.81 ± 9 μg/m 3 , and 30.38 ± 7.56 μg/m 3 , respectively. The concentrations were observed to be high during morning and evening hours due to the increased traffic on the adjacent road and inside the fuel station. The synergistic health risks linked with long-term exposure to high concentrations of BTEX and PM were also estimated. At the fuel station, a significant contribution to the SOA formation potential was shown by toluene, followed by m-xylene, p-xylene, o-xylene, ethylbenzene, and benzene. Furthermore, the deposition of airborne particles in the workers' respiratory tract was calculated using the Multiple Path Particle Dosimetry model while considering the daily average exposure duration of 12 h. The results showed that 59% of PM 10 particles were deposited in the head region, whereas 11% and 10% of PM 2.5 and PM 1 particles were deposited in the pulmonary region. Hence, the health risk assessment indicated no non-cancer risk of exposure to PM (hazard quotient = 0.13) to station personnel exposed regularly for 1 year. However, prolonged exposure to VOCs for more than 1 year can result in both carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risk (hazard quotient = 0.045 and cancer risk > 10 -6 ) in workers., (© 2023. Objective: To investigate the main factors that influence ALT abnormalities in workers exposed to benzene. Methods: In June 2022, data of 613 enterprises with benzene hazards and 585 enterprises with non-benzene hazards in Tianjin in 2021 were collected, and occupational health examination data of 13018 workers with benzene exposure and 13018 workers with non-benzene exposure were collected, and the region, enterprise type, industry classification and enterprise scale of the employer were analyzed. And occupational health examination data of workers with benzene exposure and non-benzene exposure. The effects of personal general situation, occupational history, enterprise information and benzene exposure on alanine aminotransferase were evaluated by additive interaction. Results: Compared with the group of non-benzene-exposed workers, the personal general conditions, occupational history, company information were higher in the benzene-exposed workers, and the differences were statistically significant ( P <0.05). The quantitative analysis of additive interaction found that gender ( RERI =2.632, 95% CI : 1.966-3.297; AP =0.383, 95% CI : 0.311-0.456; S =1.813, 95% CI : 1.530-2.149), age ( RERI =1.142, 95% CI : 0.928-1.356; AP =0.462, 95% CI : 0.371-0.552; S =4.461, 95% CI : 1.800-11.053), length of service ( RERI =-1.199, 95% CI : -1.653--0.745; AP =-0.456, 95% CI : -0.640--0.271; S =0.576, 95% CI : 0.479-0.693), region ( RERI =0.421, 95% CI : 0.148-0.694; AP =0.161, 95% CI : 0.053-0.268; S =1.350, 95% CI : 1.057-1.726), industry classification ( RERI =0.627, 95% CI : 0.345-0.910; AP =0.232, 95% CI : 0.132-0.332; S =1.584, 95% CI : 1.233-2.035) and benzene exposure had a statistically significant additive interaction with abnormal serum ALT. Conclusion: Emphasis should be placed on male workers under the age of 40 in the petrochemical industry, oil storage and transportation, and power production, so as to protect the health of workers more specifically and reduce the risk of disability due to disease.

The research study aimed at providing an accurate low-dose benzene exposure assessment method, by validating diffusive monitoring techniques for benzene personal exposure measurements at workplaces where benzene concentrations are expected in the low ppb range, such as in the present-day chemical, petrochemical, foundry, and pharmaceutical industry. The project was aimed at addressing the need for a robust and fully validated method to perform personal exposure measurements considering that the occupational exposure limit value for benzene is going to be significantly lowered in the next few years. Diffusive sampling offers a reliable alternative to pumped sampling methods, intrinsic safety in potentially explosive atmospheres, lightness, and ease of use. In this study, the radiello ® diffusive sampler, with the packed activated charcoal RAD130 adsorbing substrate [suitable for solvent desorption and analysis by high-resolution gas chromatography-flame ionization detection (HRGC-FID)], was used. The experiments have been conducted following the ISO 23320 standard in the range from 0.005 to 0.1 ppm (16 to 320 μg/m 3 ), yielding a full validation of the sampling and analytical method. The sampler performances have fulfilled all requisites of the ISO 23320 standard, in particular: bias due to the selection of a non-ideal sorbent is lower than 10% (no significant back diffusion of benzene due to concentration change in the atmosphere); bias due to storage of samples for up to 2 months is lower than 10%; nominal uptake rate for benzene on RAD130 is 74.65 mL/min; and expanded uncertainty of the sampling and analytical method is 20.6%. The sampling and analytical method is therefore fit-for-purpose for the personal exposure measurements aimed at testing compliance with occupational exposure limit values for benzene. The method is also fit for short-duration exposure monitoring related to specific tasks, and other volatile organic compounds, usually found in the same workplaces, such as aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons and some oxygenated compounds, have also been studied. Benzene, as a major indoor pollutant, has received widespread attention. In order to better control indoor benzene pollution and protect people's health, the limit value of benzene in the"Standards for indoor air quality (GB/T 18883-2022)'' was reduced from 0.11 mg/m 3 to 0.03 mg/m 3 . This study reviewed and discussed the relevant technical contents of the determination of benzene limit value, including the exposure status of benzene, health effects, and derivation of the limit value. It also proposed prospects for the future direction of formulating indoor air benzene standards.
