4. An Evaluation of an Online High School Summer Credit Recovery Program to Maintain Virginia On-Time Graduation

Abstract

In an attempt to maintain on-time graduation rates and reduce dropout rates, school districts, such as the one in this study, implement credit recovery programs. In an effort to improve student graduation rates and address graduation disparities, the Virginia school district in this study implements a summer credit recovery program that utilizes accelerated online learning as opposed to traditional direct instruction. This study sought to evaluate the effectiveness of the summer program as it relates to the success of student credit recovery and verified credit achievement to determine if there is a correlation to program participation and remaining on-track for on-time graduation. The program evaluation focused on the short term outcomes of the summer online credit recovery program for high school students. The study analyzed four years of post ex facto data. The findings show a relatively high rate of participation of economically disadvantaged, special education, and Black students. The results of this study show that the online credit recovery program is an overall effective instructional method for students in need of recovering failed credits. Results show significant success for students enrolled in English and math courses, a moderate level of success for social studies courses, and a marginal level of success for science courses. There is no correlation between final course grade and accompanying SOL test, and the SOL pass rate was 23%. Ultimately, participation in the summer online credit recovery program proved likely to keep students on-track for on-time graduation. Abstract

The Eph receptors and their cognate ephrin ligands play key roles in many aspects of nervous system development. These interactions typically occur within an individual tissue type, serving either to guide axons to their terminal targets or to define boundaries between the rhombomeres of the hindbrain. We have identified a novel role for the Caenorhabditis elegans ephrin EFN-4 in promoting primary neurite outgrowth in AIY interneurons and D-class motor neurons. Rescue experiments reveal that EFN-4 functions non-cell autonomously in the epidermis to promote primary neurite outgrowth. We also find that EFN-4 plays a role in promoting ectopic axon branching in a C. elegans model of X-linked Kallmann syndrome. In this context, EFN-4 functions non-cell autonomously in the body-wall muscle and in parallel with HS modification genes and HSPG core proteins. This is the first report of an epidermal ephrin providing a developmental cue to the nervous system.

9. Testing the Impact of Job-Related Variables on a Utility Judgment Training Criterion beyond Background and Affective Reaction Variables

Abstract

We tested the incremental impact of a job-related set of variables for explaining a utility judgment training effectiveness variable, that is, course completion skill preparedness, beyond background and course-related variables. Our respondents were two different emergency medical service samples, 415 basics and 742 paramedics, from the 2008 US Longitudinal Emergency Medical Technician Attributes and Demographic Study. Extending earlier research into the training of US emergency medical services staff, we developed scales for measuring two course-related affective reaction variables, quality of course materials and quality of lead instructor. We found for both samples that the quality of course materials and quality of lead instructor variables each significantly explained course completion skill preparedness variance beyond controlled-for background variables. We also found that the set of job-related variables explained further, additional variance and that job satisfaction was positively related to course completion skill preparedness for both samples. The limitations of the study and future research ideas are discussed.

Abstract

Objective: Describe prehospital Emergency Medical Services (EMS) providers' beliefs regarding spinal precautions for pediatric trauma transport.Methods: We randomly surveyed nationally certified EMS providers. We assessed providers' beliefs about specific precautions, and preferred precautions given a child's age (0–4 or 5–18 years) and presence of specific cervical spine injury (CSI) risk factors.Results: We received 5,400 responses (17%). Most were Paramedics (36%) or EMTs (22%) and worked at fire-based services (42%). A total of 47% endorsed responding to pediatric calls more than once per month. Consensus beliefs (>66% agreement) were that rigid cervical collars (68%) and long backboards with soft conforming surfaces (79%) maintain an injured pediatric spine in optimal position. Only 39% believed in the utility of the rigid long backboard to protect the pediatric spine. For most risk factors in both age categories, a rigid cervical collar with a long backboard with a soft conforming surface was the most common response (28–40% depending on age group and risk factor); however, there were no consensus beliefs. Provider-level experience, working as a patient care provider, less education, and parent status were associated with endorsing the rigid cervical collar. Factors associated with endorsing the rigid long backboard included provider level, working as a patient care provider, low pediatric call volume, and less education.Conclusions: EMS providers believe that rigid cervical collars and long backboards with soft conforming surfaces provide optimal spinal precautions. 40. The dangerous and devious strategy of being unintelligible : women's rhetoric in Gothic novels, 1798-1815

Abstract

This thesis examines the discursive strategies employed by female Gothic novelists in late eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century Britain. At time of the French Revolution, ruling patriarchy enforced strong, ideologically laden binaries: male/female, rational/irrational, public/private, etc. Since these binaries were organized around principles of opposition, women, on the "wrong" side of the binary were disempowered. Charlotte Lennox's The Female Quixote demonstrates repressive ideological education at work: Arabella, the protagonist, is devious and unintelligible and is forcibly made to fit within the rigid binary. To prevent oppression and vindicate themselves to ruling patriarchy, many women in the years following turned to the Gothic, a devious genre that focuses on the symbol of female entrapment and resists forcible closure. Perplexingly, female Gothic novels of this period appropriate binaries, concluding with shockingly abrupt finality. This thesis argues that women needed to express themselves intelligibly within these confines or else risk forced capitulation. To do so, women needed to be proficient in both patriarchy's and their own interpretive strategies and discourses and reconcile two antithetical poles. Only once women were able to gain discursive fluency could they fashion their views as concordant with patriarchal values. Women employed a wide array of rhetorical strategies to express themselves in patriarchy's idiolect: 1. capitulation, 2. deception, 3. semantic reinscription, and 4. satire. To explore these strategies, this thesis analyzes Gothic novels written in the late 1790's and early nineteenth century: Charlotte Dacre's Zofloya, Sydney Owenson's The Wild Irish Girl, F.C. Patrick's More Ghosts!, and Jane Austen's Northanger Abbey.
