In this work, we tested the reliability of two different methods of automated landform classification (ACL) in three geological domains of the southern Italian chain with contrasting morphological features. ACL maps deriving from the TPI-based (topographic position index) algorithm are strictly dependent to the search input parameters and they are not able to fully capture landforms of different size. Geomorphons-based classification has shown a higher potential and can represent a powerful method of ACL, although it should be improved with the introduction of additional DEM-based parameters for the extraction of landform classes.

Recent advances in spatial methods of digital elevation model (DEMs) analysis have addressed many research topics on the assessment of morphometric parameters of the landscape. Development of computer algorithms for calculating the geomorphometric properties of the Earth's surface has allowed for expanding of some methods in the semi-automatic recognition and classification of landscape features. In such a way, several papers have been produced, documenting the applicability of the landform classification based on map algebra. The Topographic Position Index (TPI) is one of the most widely used parameters for semi-automated landform classification using GIS software. The aim was to apply the TPI classes for landform classification in the Basilicata Region (Southern Italy). The Basilicata Region is characterized by an extremely heterogeneous landscape and geological features. The automated landform extraction, starting from two different resolution DEMs at 20 and 5 m-grids, has been carried out by using three different GIS software: Arcview, Arcmap, and SAGA. Comparison of the landform maps resulting from each software at a different scale has been realized, furnishing at the end the best landform map and consequently a discussion over which is the best software implementation of the TPI method.

Basilicata Natura 2000 network consists of 50 Sites of Community Importance (SCI) and 17 Special Protection Zones (SPZs), covering alltogether more than 17% of the regional area. This network, partially overlapping other forms of land protection, represents a valuable environmental, agricultural and cultural heritage, in which the safeguard of natural resources and landscapes has to be coupled with the needs of the local population; especially in relation to development and social welfare. The Natura 2000 project involved a panel of experts belonging to 15 different institutions, to form a steering committee with the following professional and scientific skills: vegetation, landscape, fauna, geology, agriculture, forestry, sea, architecture and planning, territorial analysis and representation. Along the 4 years project, the steering committee designed and coordinated the activities of over 150 professionals, mostly from Basilicata, who carried out field surveys and data analysis aimed at assessing the environmental conditions in the SCI and SPZs, proposing measures and plans, implementing thematic databases. SCI/SPZ management plans, by themselves, may not be sufficient to fulfill the requirements of an effective environmental policy, which has to go along with the awareness of people, citizens and local administrators about the instances of a sustainable policy. For this reason, the activities of surveying and management have been coupled with a communication project that involves all the experts and a relevant part of professionals who participated to the Natura 2000 project. The communication activity implies the use and the creation of several tools (publishing, video, websites, meetings, photo contests, social networks ...) targeted to different groups: policy makers (local, regional, national, European ), organizations, citizens, schools, farmers, small and medium enterprises (www.natura2000basilicata.it). A further goal is to feature the environmental highlights of Basilicata which are linked to a specific and often surprising integration of an ancient human presence with the natural elements, and the role performed by the traditional farming activities in the maintenance of ecosystem dynamics and services (in particular with agriculture). In fact, a good number of Natura 2000 sites can be considered High Nature Value Farmlands (HNVF, sensu E. Andersen, 2003), in which a virtuous relationship was established a long time ago between traditional practices and the environment itself. In this context, it combines the convergence between the activities carried on the Natura 2000 network and the project Agrival (http://utagri.enea.it/projects/agrival), a research project led by ENEA in Val d'Agri, in order to experimentally contribute to the methodology for the identification of the High Nature Value Farmlands and make them cohabit with the other economic activities in the local context. The process started with the project Basilicata Natura 2000 Network is therefore an interesting methodological model that, in coherence with the financial planning of the European Community for the period 2014-2020 (Brussels, 12.12.2011, COMM. 874) puts together projects on environmental issues to boost the meeting of agricultural, environmental, cultural and productive policies, fostered by the EC, and enhancing the implementation of the "Prioritized Actions Frameworks" (PAF), pointed out by the European Commission as the optimal tools for the management of Natura 2000 networks.

I geositi, proposti in questo lavoro ricadono nella parte occidentale dell'Appennino meridionale e sono rappresentati dal Lago Sirino, nel territorio di Nemoli (PZ), e dall'area del Ponte della Ferrovia Calabro- Lucana, appena a sud dell'abitato di Lagonegro (PZ). Vengono presentati insieme perché ricadono in un'area con caratteristiche geologiche e geomorfologiche simili. Il lago Sirino è situato alle pendici del monte omonimo, alla quota di 783 m s.l.m., dove affiorano i terreni relativi alle Unità Lagonegresi. L'analisi geomorfologica suggerisce che la genesi dello specchio d'acqua è dovuta alla presenza della sorgente del Sirino che si riversa in una depressione tettonica (sinclinale) resa impermeabile da depositi argillosi rossastri dovuti alla dissoluzione dei Calcari con Selce. Il ponte della Ferrovia Calabro-Lucana, che attraversa il vallone della Serra, è stato ancorato a nord ad un blocco calcareo del membro organogeno della Formazione di Monte Facito e a sud alle Dolomie bianche e grigie. Il blocco calcareo, che poggia al di sopra il membro terrigeno della stessa formazione, è soggetto ad un movimento gravitativo profondo con una superficie di scorrimento che si sviluppa al contatto tra i due membri. Il movimento gravitativo, avvenuto prima con uno scivolamento traslazionale e successivamente con uno rotazionale, è stato registrato dalla deformazione del ponte. I geositi proposti presentano interessanti peculiarità geologiche e geomofologiche da tutelare e valorizzare.

Il geosito presentato in questo lavoro ha valenza sia geologica che storico-architettonica ed è ubicato nel centro storico di Laurenzana un piccolo comune nel cuore dell’Appennino lucano. Esso è caratterizzato dalla presenza di due torrioni conglomeratici che ospitano alla loro sommità il castello medioevale e la Chiesa Madre Santa Maria Assunta. Il centro abitato di Laurenzana è situato nel settore centro-orientale dell’Appennino meridionale in prossimità del fronte della catena. In quest’area affiorano terreni ascrivibili alla Formazione di Gorgoglione nel settore orientale e alle Unità Sicilidi rappresentate principalmente dalla Formazione di Corleto Perticara Auctorum p.p. nel settore occidentale. L’area è condizionata dalla presenza di due zone di faglia trascorrenti: una zona di trascorrenza destra orientata NE-SW che corre lungo il torrente Camastra ed una zona di trascorrenza sinistra profonda orientata WNW-ESE. A quest’ultima struttura sono associate strutture minori. Il centro storico di Laurenzana è stato edificato sui conglomerati della Formazione di Gorgoglione. La successiva espansione dell’area urbana ha interessato la facies argillosa della stessa formazione. Il geosito interessa la facies conglomeratica della Formazione di Gorgoglione che in quest’area costituisce una scaglia tettonica immergente a SW interessata da faglie trascorrenti sinistre e dirette che ne determinano lo smembramento in diversi blocchi (Torrioni). Sui due torrioni principali sono stati edificati il castello e la chiesa, caratterizzati da una struttura architettonica fortemente condizionata dalla geologia e dalla geomorfologia del sito. Il castello medievale di Laurenzana, di cui si hanno notizie a partire dal periodo normanno, si presenta con una pianta irregolare che segue i bordi del torrione che lo ospita sia per sfruttare al massimo lo spazio disponibile sia per garantirne la difesa del borgo dalle incursioni nemiche. La Chiesa Madre di Santa Maria Assunta che occupa la sommità di un torrione conglomeratico disposto più a valle, è stata costruita agli inizi del XIII secolo, ampliata nel 1583 ed assume la forma attuale nel Settecento quando all’impianto basilicale a tre navate si aggiunge il cappellone laterale che fu terminato nel 1780.

The Brindisi di Montagna Scalo Landslide in Southern Italy is an active complex mass movement, which affects the left slope of the Basento River. In the last few decades, this landslide has been continuously monitored, as it directly threatened some of the most important communication routes in the Basilicata Region. Nevertheless, little progresses have been made to prevent further landslide advancement, and continuous maintenance is required. With the aims of better understanding, the main factors controlling the evolution of this landslide, and suggesting the most appropriate countermeasures, a multidisciplinary study, based on the integration of direct and indirect techniques, was carried out. Direct techniques included multi-temporal geomorphological analysis of the slope, alongside geological and structural field observations. Indirect techniques consisted of electrical resistivity tomography acquisition. The combined analyses of the geological and geophysical data showed that Quaternary tectonic processes played a fundamental role as a predisposing factor, whereas seasonal rainfall, and the perpetual undercutting by erosional processes caused by the Basento River at the toe of the landslide are the main triggering mechanisms. The Brindisi di Montagna Scalo Landslide represents an outstanding case-study, concerning the interaction between a flow-like complex landslide and essential linear infrastructure, such as motorways and railways.
