Search

Determination of pulsar parallaxes and proper motions addresses fundamental astrophysical questions. We have recently finished a VLBI astrometry project to determine the proper motions and parallaxes of 27 pulsars, thereby doubling the total number of pulsar parallaxes. Here we summarise our astrometric technique and present the discovery of a pulsar moving in excess of 1000 km/s. As an example of the application of high precision pulsar astrometry we also infer the identification of 2 pulsars originating from a disrupted binary in the Cygnus Superbubble., Comment: 3 pages, 2 figures, to appear in the proceedings of the "Stellar End Products" workshop, 13-15 April 2005, Granada, Spain (for publication in MmSAI vol.77)

Results are presented from long term VLBI monitoring of the parsec-scale radio jet in 3C120, primarily at 5 and 1.7 GHz. Numerous superluminal features are followed, some over large fractional distances from the core. The speeds of the features are not all the same, but vary by less than a factor of 2. The superluminal features extend to core distances of over 0.2 arcseconds and the region of slowing has not been found. The 1.7 GHz images show evidence for stationary features in addition to the superluminal features. The structure of the jet in the vicinity of the most likely stationary feature is suggestive of a helical pattern seen in projection. The deprojected wavelength of the pattern is very long relative to the jet radius, unlike the situation in sources such as M87. If the 3C120 jet does contain a slowly-moving, helical structure, then theory suggests that the jet resides in a relatively cool medium, not in a relativistically hot cocoon or lobe., Comment: 35 pages with 8 postscript figures. Results are presented from a long-term astrometry program on PSR B0919+06 using the NRAO Very Long Baseline Array. With ten observations (seven epochs) between 1994--2000, we measure a proper motion of 18.35 +/- 0.06 mas/yr in RA, 86.56 +/- 0.12 mas/yr in Dec, and a parallax of 0.83 +/- 0.13 mas (68% confidence intervals). This yields a pulsar distance of 1.21 +/- 0.19 kpc, making PSR B0919+06 the farthest pulsar for which a trigonometric parallax has been obtained, and the implied pulsar transverse speed is 505 +/- 80 km/s. Combining the distance estimate with interstellar scintillation data spanning 20 years, we infer the existence of a patchy or clumpy scattering screen along the line of sight in addition to the distributed electron density predicted by models for the Galaxy, and constrain the location of this scattering region to within about 250 parsecs of the Sun. Comparison with the lines of sight towards other pulsars in the same quadrant of the Galaxy permits refinement of our knowledge of the local interstellar matter in this direction., Comment: 12 pages, includes 4 figures and 3 tables, uses AASTeX 5 (included); ApJ submitted

VLBI spectral line observations made at the frequency of the z = 0.437 H I absorption line toward the extended radio QSO 3C 196 demonstrate that the absorption does not occur against the more compact continuum structure in this object. Apparently the H I absorption line results from absorption of the lower brightness continuum emission by an intervening cloud with an angular diameter which must be greater than 0.63 arcsec. For a standard cosmology, this corresponds to a linear extent greater than 2.25 kpc. For a spherical cloud, the mass of absorbing gas is near 7 x 10 to the 7th solar masses. Thus this particular QSO absorbing cloud is surprisingly large and massive.

A multifrequency VLBI search for interstellar scattering of extragalactic radio sources near supernova remnants is reported. VLBI observations at 610, 1663, and 4991 MHz were made of compact sources near the supernova remnants CTA 1, G33.6 + 0.1, G74.9 + 1.2, and HB 21, and 610 MHz observations were also made of a source near HB 9. These observations were motivated by the possibility of enhanced cosmic ray-induced turbulence in front of supernova remnants, as expected in 'diffusive' theories of shock wave acceleration. Angular broadening is definitely seen in the case of the source 2013 + 370, which lies within 4 arcmin of the supernova remnant G74.9 + 1.2. Present observations cannot unambiguously attribute the scattering material to the supernova remnant, as the line of sight also passes through the Cygnus OB1 association. The source 1849 + 005 appears to be highly scattered, as fringes were not detected even on short baselines at 5 GHz. This result may be due to the low galactic longitude of this source rather than its proximity to the supernova remnant G 33.6 + 0.1. Broadening was not detected for sources whose lines of sight pass close to the supernova remnants HB 9, HB 21, and CTA 1.

Although focused toward the operational meteorological support review and definition of an operational meteorological interactive data display systems (MIDDS) requirements for the Space Meteorology Support Group at NASA/Johnson Space Center, the total operational meteorological support requirements and a systems concept for the MIDDS network integration of NASA and Air Force elements to support the National Space Transportation System are also addressed.
