Parallel assemblies of slender structures forming brushes are common in our daily life from sweepers to pastry brushes and paintbrushes. This type of porous objects can easily trap liquid in their interstices when removed from a liquid bath. This property is exploited to transport liquids in many applications ranging from painting, dip-coating, brush-coating to the capture of nectar by bees, bats and honeyeaters. Rationalizing the viscous entrainment flow beyond simple scaling laws is complex due to its multiscale structure and the multidirectional flow. Here, we provide an analytical model, together with precision experiments with ideal rigid brushes, to fully characterize the flow through this anisotropic porous medium as it is withdrawn from a liquid bath. We show that the amount of liquid entrained by a brush varies non-monotonically during the withdrawal at low speed, is highly sensitive to the different parameters at play and is very well described by the model without any fitting parameter. Finally, an optimal brush geometry maximizing the amount of liquid captured at a given retraction speed is derived from the model and experimentally validated. These optimal designs open routes towards efficient liquid manipulating devices.

We study the capillary attraction force between two fibers dynamically withdrawn from a bath. We propose an experimental method to measure this force and show that its magnitude strongly increases with the retraction speed by up to a factor ten compared to the static case. We show that this remarkable increase stems from the shape of the dynamical meniscus between the two fibers. We first study the dynamical meniscus around one fiber, and obtain experimental and numerical scaling of its size increase with the capillary number, which is not captured by the classical Landau-Levich-Derjaguin theory. We then show that the shape of the deformed air-liquid interface around two fibers can be inferred from the linear superposition of the interface around a single fiber. These results yield an analytical expression for the attraction which compares well with the experimental data. The nonlinear response of driven complex materials -- disordered magnets, amorphous media, crumpled sheets -- features intricate transition pathways where the system repeatedly hops between metastable states. % which encode memory effects. Such pathways encode memory effects and may allow information processing -- yet tools are lacking to experimentally observe and control these pathways, and their full breadth has not been explored. Here we introduce compression of corrugated elastic sheets to precisely observe and manipulate {their full}, multi-step pathways, which are reproducible, robust,and controlled by geometry. We show how manipulation of the boundaries allows to elicit multiple targeted pathways from a single sample. In all cases, each state in the pathway can be encoded by the binary state of material 'bits' called hysterons, and the strength of their interactions plays a crucial role. In particular, as function of increasing interaction strength, we observe Preisach pathways, expected in systems of independently switching hysterons, 'scrambled' pathways that evidence hitherto unexplored interactions between these material bits, and 'accumulator' pathways which leverage these interactions to perform an elementary computation. Our work opens a route to probe, manipulate and understand complex pathways, impacting future applications in soft robotics and information processing in materials.

The recent discovery of electro-active polymers has shown great promises in the field of soft robotics, and was logically followed by experimental, numerical and theoretical developments. Most of these studies were concerned with systems entirely covered by electrodes. However, there is a growing interest for partially active polymers, in which the electrode covers only one part of the membrane. Indeed, such actuation can trigger buckling instabilities and so represents a route toward the control of 3D shapes. Here, we study theoretically the behaviour of such partially active electro-active polymer. We address two problems: (i) the electrostatic elastica including geometric non-linearities and partially electro-active strip using a variational approach. We propose a new interpretation of the equations of deformation, by drawing analogies with biological growth, in which the effect of the electric voltage is seen as a change in the reference stress-free state. (ii) we explain the nature of the distribution of electrostatic forces on this simple system, which is not trivial. A dielectric elastomer whose edges are held fixed will buckle, given sufficient applied voltage, resulting in a nontrivial out-of-plane deformation. We study this situation numerically using a nonlinear elastic model which decouples two of the principal electrostatic stresses acting on an elastomer: normal pressure due to the mutual attraction of oppositely charged electrodes and tangential shear ("fringing") due to repulsion of like charges at the electrode edges. These enter via physically simplified boundary conditions that are applied in a fixed reference domain using a nondimensional approach. The method is valid for small to moderate strains and is straightforward to implement in a generic nonlinear elasticity code. We validate the model by directly comparing the simulated equilibrium shapes with the experiment. For circular electrodes which buckle axisymetrically, the shape of the deflection profile is captured. Annular electrodes of different widths produce azimuthal ripples with wavelengths that match our simulations. In this case, it is essential to compute multiple equilibria because the first model solution obtained by the nonlinear solver (Newton's method) is often not the energetically favored state. We address this using a numerical technique known as "deflation".
