Abstract

Abstract Touch is the primary way people communicate intimacy in romantic relationships, and affectionate touch behaviors such as stroking, hugging and kissing are universally observed in partnerships all over the world. Here, we explored the association of love and affectionate touch behaviors in romantic partnerships in two studies comprising 7880 participants. In the first study, we used a cross-cultural survey conducted in 37 countries to test whether love was universally associated with affectionate touch behaviors. In the second study, using a more fine-tuned touch behavior scale, we tested whether the frequency of affectionate touch behaviors was related to love in romantic partnerships. As hypothesized, love was significantly and positively associated with affectionate touch behaviors in both studies and this result was replicated regardless of the inclusion of potentially relevant factors as controls. Altogether, our data strongly suggest that affectionate touch is a relatively stable characteristic of human romantic relationships that is robustly and reliably related to the degree of reported love between partners.

Abstract

Abstract Recent cross-cultural and neuro-hormonal investigations have suggested that love is a near universal phenomenon that has a biological background. Therefore, the remaining important question is not whether love exists worldwide but which cultural, social, or environmental factors influence experiences and expressions of love. In the present study, we explored whether countries’ modernization indexes are related to love experiences measured by three subscales (passion, intimacy, commitment) of the Triangular Love Scale. Analyzing data from 9474 individuals from 45 countries, we tested for relationships with country-level predictors, namely, modernization proxies (i.e., Human Development Index, World Modernization Index, Gender Inequality Index), collectivism, and average annual temperatures. We found that mean levels of love (especially intimacy) were higher in countries with higher modernization proxies, collectivism, and average annual temperatures. In conclusion, our results grant some support to the hypothesis that modernization processes might influence love experiences.

Abstract

Previous studies have found a negative relationship between creativity and conservatism. However, as these studies were mostly conducted on samples of homogeneous nationality, the generalizability of the effect across different cultures is unknown. We addressed this gap by conducting a study in 28 countries. Based on the notion that attitudes can be shaped by both environmental and ecological factors, we hypothesized that parasite stress can also affect creativity and thus, its potential effects should be controlled for. The results of multilevel analyses showed that, as expected, conservatism was a significant predictor of lower creativity, adjusting for economic status, age, sex, education level, subjective susceptibility to disease, and country-level parasite stress. In addition, most of the variability in creativity was due to individual rather than country-level variance. Our study provides evidence for a weak but significant negative link between conservatism and creativity at the individual level (β = −0.08, p <.001) and no such effect when country-level conservatism was considered. Abstract

In this paper, a low-order approximation (LOA) of fractional order PID (FOPID) for an automatic voltage regulator (AVR) based on the modified artificial bee colony (ABC) is proposed. The improved artificial bee colony (IABC) high-order approximation (HOA)-based fractional order PID (IABC/HOA-FOPID) controller, which is distinguished by a significant order approximation and by an integer order transfer function, requires the use of a large number of parameters. To improve the AVR system’s performance in terms of transient and frequency response analysis, the memory capacity of the IABC/HOA-FOPID controller was lowered so that it could fit better in the corrective loop. The new robust controller is named the improved artificial bee colony (IABC) low-order approximation (LOA)-based fractional order PID (IABC/LOA-FOPID). The performance of the proposed IABC/LOA-FOPID controller was compared not only to the original ABC algorithm-tuned PID controller, but also to other controllers tuned by state-of-the-art meta-heuristic algorithms such as the improved whale optimization algorithm (IWOA), particle swarm optimization (PSO), cuckoo search (CS), many optimizing liaisons (MOL), genetic algorithm (GA), local unimodal sampling (LUS), and the tree seed algorithm (TSA). Step response, root locus, frequency response, robustness test, and disturbance rejection abilities are all compared. The simulation results and comparisons with the proposed IABC/LOA-FOPID controller and other existing controllers clearly show that the proposed IABC/LOA-FOPID controller outperforms the optimal PID controllers found by other algorithms in all the aforementioned performance tests.

Abstract

Recent cross-cultural and neuro-hormonal investigations have suggested that love is a near universal phenomenon that has a biological background. Therefore, the remaining important question is not whether love exists worldwide but which cultural, social, or environmental factors influence experiences and expressions of love. In the present study, we explored whether countries’ modernization indexes are related to love experiences measured by three subscales (passion, intimacy, commitment) of the Triangular Love Scale. Analyzing data from 9474 individuals from 45 countries, we tested for relationships with country-level predictors, namely, modernization proxies (i.e., Human Development Index, World Modernization Index, Gender Inequality Index), collectivism, and average annual temperatures. We found that mean levels of love (especially intimacy) were higher in countries with higher modernization proxies, collectivism, and average annual temperatures. In conclusion, our results grant some support to the hypothesis that modernization processes might influence love experiences.

Recently, many research works have focused on fractional order control (FOC) and fractional systems. It has proven to be a good mean for improving the plant dynamics with respect to response time and disturbance rejection. In This work we use the Sub-optimal Approximation of fractional order transfer function to design the parameters of PID controller and we study the performance analysis of fractionalized PID controller over integer order PID controller.

Abstract

The design method of polynomial control laws by mean of pole placement are actually smart solutions to many industrial applications. This category of controllers is very popular in the industry; however most of their applications concern only problems with constant reference signals. In this paper, we propose an indirect adaptive controller by fractional order pole placement. The proposed control strategy is based on the self-tuning control structure and on-line estimation of the plant model parameters using the Recursive Least Squares (RLS) algorithm. To show the effectiveness of the proposed control scheme two simulation examples are presented. The first example is the control of a DC motor angular speed and the second one is the control of an air-lubricated capstan drive for precision positioning. Improvement in the system control dynamical behavior compared to classical control scheme has been shown for the two illustrative examples.

Abstract

Touch is the primary way people communicate intimacy in romantic relationships, and affectionate touch behaviors such as stroking, hugging and kissing are universally observed in partnerships all over the world. Here, we explored the association of love and affectionate touch behaviors in romantic partnerships in two studies comprising 7880 participants. In the first study, we used a cross-cultural survey conducted in 37 countries to test whether love was universally associated with affectionate touch behaviors. In the second study, using a more fine-tuned touch behavior scale, we tested whether the frequency of affectionate touch behaviors was related to love in romantic partnerships. As hypothesized, love was significantly and positively associated with affectionate touch behaviors in both studies and this result was replicated regardless of the inclusion of potentially relevant factors as controls. Altogether, our data strongly suggest that affectionate touch is a relatively stable characteristic of human romantic relationships that is robustly and reliably related to the degree of reported love between partners.

Abstract

In this paper, a low-order approximation (LOA) of fractional order PID (FOPID) for an automatic voltage regulator (AVR) based on the modified artificial bee colony (ABC) is proposed. The improved artificial bee colony (IABC) high-order approximation (HOA)-based fractional order PID (IABC/HOA-FOPID) controller, which is distinguished by a significant order approximation and by an integer order transfer function, requires the use of a large number of parameters. To improve the AVR system’s performance in terms of transient and frequency response analysis, the memory capacity of the IABC/HOA-FOPID controller was lowered so that it could fit better in the corrective loop. The new robust controller is named the improved artificial bee colony (IABC) low-order approximation (LOA)-based fractional order PID (IABC/LOA-FOPID). The performance of the proposed IABC/LOA-FOPID controller was compared not only to the original ABC algorithm-tuned PID controller, but also to other controllers tuned by state-of-the-art meta-heuristic algorithms such as the improved whale optimization algorithm (IWOA), particle swarm optimization (PSO), cuckoo search (CS), many optimizing liaisons (MOL), genetic algorithm (GA), local unimodal sampling (LUS), and the tree seed algorithm (TSA). Step response, root locus, frequency response, robustness test, and disturbance rejection abilities are all compared. The simulation results and comparisons with the proposed IABC/LOA-FOPID controller and other existing controllers clearly show that the proposed IABC/LOA-FOPID controller outperforms the optimal PID controllers found by other algorithms in all the aforementioned performance tests.

Abstract

The Foum El Gherza Reservoir fails to satisfy the irrigation of 300,000 palms of Sidi Okba and Seriana due to advanced siltation. Based on data from bathymetric surveys conducted by the National Agency for Dams, the siltation rate was estimated at 0.9 million m3/year. With a total capacity of 47 million of m3, the Foum El Gherza dam is silted up with more than 65 million m3. In this case, the life of the dam will not exceed 11 years of operation. The total silting of the reservoir will occur in 2023. Desilting the dam proves an emergency to save the palms of Seriana and Sidi Okba.

Abstract

In this article, we discussed the effect of sediment transport in the Chellif catchment on the silting of Boughezoul reservoir. Since 1934, when the impoundment of the dam, nine bathymetric surveys were carried out by hydraulic services. Based on the last two bathymetric surveys (1986 and 2005), we assessed the average annual rate of silting 0.67 million m3·year−1. Is a filling rate of 70% of the total capacity of the reservoir in 2011. Storage capacity has decreased from 55 million m3 in 1934 to 15 million m3 in 2011. Concentrations exceeding 300 g·l−1, recorded in the river upstream of Boughezoul reservoir, caused formation of density currents.

In this paper, a new optimal reduced order fractionalized PID (ROFPID) controller based on the Harris Hawks Optimization Algorithm (HHOA) is proposed for aircraft pitch angle control. Statistical tests, analysis of the index of performance, and disturbance rejection, as well as transient and frequency responses, were all used to validate the effectiveness of the proposed approach. The performance of the proposed HHOA‐ROFPID and HHOA‐ROFPID controllers with Oustaloup and Matsuda approximations was then compared not only to the PID controller tuned by the original HHO algorithm but also to other controllers tuned by cutting‐edge meta‐heuristic algorithms such as the atom search optimization algorithm (ASOA), Salp Swarm Algorithm (SSA), sine‐cosine algorithm (SCA), and Grey wolf optimization algorithm (GOA). Simulation results show that the proposed controller with the Matsuda approximation provides better and more robust performance compared to the proposed controller with the Oustaloup approximation and other existing controllers in terms of percentage overshoot, settling time, rise time, and disturbance rejection. Abstract

Interpersonal touch behavior differs across cultures, yet no study to date has systematically tested for cultural variation in affective touch, nor examined the factors that might account for this variability. Here, over 14,000 individuals from 45 countries were asked whether they embraced, stroked, kissed, or hugged their partner, friends, and youngest child during the week preceding the study. We then examined a range of hypothesized individual-level factors (sex, age, parasitic history, conservatism, religiosity, and preferred interpersonal distance) and cultural-level factors (regional temperature, parasite stress, regional conservatism, collectivism, and religiosity) in predicting these affective-touching behaviors. Our results indicate that affective touch was most prevalent in relationships with partners and children, and its diversity was relatively higher in warmer, less conservative, and religious countries, and among younger, female, and liberal people.
