Neutrinos at ultrahigh energies can originate both from interactions of cosmic rays at their acceleration sites and through cosmic-ray interactions as they propagate through the universe. These neutrinos are expected to have a low flux which drives the need for instruments with large effective areas. Radio observations of the inclined air showers induced by tau neutrino interactions in rock can achieve this, because radio waves can propagate essentially unattenuated through the hundreds of kilometers of atmosphere. Proposed arrays for radio detection of tau neutrinos focus on either arrays of inexpensive receivers distributed over a large area, the GRAND concept, or compact phased arrays on elevated mountains, the BEACON concept, to build up a large detector area with a low trigger threshold. We present a concept that combines the advantages of these two approaches with a trigger driven by phased arrays at a moderate altitude (1 km) and sparse, high-gain outrigger receivers for reconstruction and background rejection. Large-scale cosmic-ray detectors like the Giant Radio Array for Neutrino Detection (GRAND) are pushing the boundaries of our ability to identify air shower events. Existing trigger schemes rely solely on the timing of signals detected by individual antennas, which brings many challenges in distinguishing true air shower signals from background. This work explores novel event-level radio trigger methods specifically designed for GRAND, but also applicable to other systems, such as the Radio Detector (RD) of the Pierre Auger Observatory. In addition to an upgraded plane wave front reconstruction technique, we introduce orthogonal and complementary approaches that analyze the radio-emission footprint, the spatial distribution of signal strength across triggered antennas, to refine event selection. We test our methods on mock data sets constructed with simulated showers and real background noise measured with the GRAND prototype, to assess the performance potential in terms of sensitivity and background rejection in GRAND. When performing radio detection of ultra-high energy astroparticles, the planar wavefront model is often used as a first step to evaluate the arrival direction of primary particles, by adjusting the wavefront orientation based on the peak of signal traces of individual antennas. The benefits of this approach are however limited by the lack of a good evaluation of its robustness. In order to mitigate this limitation, we derive in this work an analytical solution for the arrival direction as well as the corresponding analytical reconstruction uncertainty. Because it is fast and robust, this reconstruction method can be used as a proxy for more complex estimators, or implemented online for low-level triggering., Comment: Submitted to NIMA

The Giant Radio Array for Neutrino Detection (GRAND) aims to detect highly inclined extensive air showers (EAS) with down-going and up-going trajectories. Several working groups in the GRAND collaboration are developing methods to reconstruct the incoming direction, core position, primary energy, and composition of the showers. The reconstruction pipeline -- currently under development in the France/IAP working group -- relies on a model of spherical wavefront emission for arrival times, which is possible because the radio signals are generated far away from the antenna stations. The amplitude distribution of the signals at the antenna level is described by an Angular Distribution Function that considers various asymmetries in the data, including geomagnetic effects. The operation of upcoming ultra-high-energy cosmic-ray, gamma-ray, and neutrino radio-detection experiments, like the Giant Radio Array for Neutrino Detection (GRAND), poses significant computational challenges involving the production of numerous simulations of particle showers and their detection, and a high data throughput. GRANDlib is an open-source software tool designed to meet these challenges. Its primary goal is to perform end-to-end simulations of the detector operation, from the interaction of ultra-high-energy particles, through -- by interfacing with external air-shower simulations -- the ensuing particle shower development and its radio emission, to its detection by antenna arrays and its processing by data-acquisition systems. Additionally, GRANDlib manages the visualization, storage, and retrieval of experimental and simulated data. The Giant Radio Array for Neutrino Detection (GRAND) is an envisioned observatory of ultra-high-energy particles of cosmic origin, with energies in excess of 100 PeV. GRAND uses large surface arrays of autonomous radio-detection units to look for the radio emission from extensive air showers that are triggered by the interaction of ultra-high-energy cosmic rays, gamma rays, and neutrinos in the atmosphere or underground. In particular, for ultra-high-energy neutrinos, the future final phase of GRAND aims to be sensitive enough to discover them in spite of their plausibly tiny flux. Presently, three prototype GRAND radio arrays are in operation: GRANDProto300, in China, GRAND@Auger, in Argentina, and GRAND@Nancay, in France. Their goals are to field-test the design of the radio-detection units, understand the radio background to which they are exposed, and develop tools for diagnostic, data gathering, and data analysis. We investigate the impact of prior models on the upper bound of the sum of neutrino masses, $\sum m_{\nu}$. We use data from Large Scale Structure of galaxies, Cosmic Microwave Background, Type Ia SuperNovae, and Big Bang Nucleosynthesis. We probe physically motivated neutrino mass models (respecting oscillation experiment constraints) and compare them to constraints using standard cosmological approximations. The former give a consistent upper bound of $\sum m_{\nu} \lesssim 0.26$ eV ($95\%$ CI) and yields a strong competitive upper bound for the lightest neutrino mass species, $m_0^{\nu} < 0.086$ eV ($95\%$ CI). By contrast one of the approximations, which is somewhat inconsistent with oscillation experiments, yields an upper bound of $\sum m_{\nu} \lesssim 0.15$ eV ($95\%$ CI), which differs substantially from the former upper bound. We, therefore, argue that cosmological neutrino mass and hierarchy determination should be pursued using physically motivated models since approximations might lead to incorrect and nonphysical upper bounds., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures

We constrain cosmological parameters by analysing the angular power spectra of the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey DR12 galaxies, a spectroscopic follow-up of around 1.3 million SDSS galaxies over 9,376 deg$^2$ with an effective volume of $\sim 6.5$ (Gpc $h^{-1}$)$^3$ in the redshift range $0.15 \leq z < 0.80$. We split this sample into 13 tomographic bins ($\Delta z = 0.05$); angular power spectra were calculated using a Pseudo-$C_{\ell}$ estimator, and covariance matrices were estimated using log-normal simulated maps. Cosmological constraints obtained from these data were combined with constraints from Planck CMB experiment as well as the JLA supernovae compilation. Considering a $w$CDM cosmological model measured on scales up to $k_{max} = 0.07h$ Mpc$^{-1}$, we constrain a constant dark energy equation-of-state with a $\sim 4\%$ error at the 1-$\sigma$ level: $w_0 = -0.993^{+0.046}_{-0.043}$, together with $\Omega_m = 0.330\pm 0.012$, $\Omega_b = 0.0505 \pm 0.002$, $S_8 \equiv \sigma_8 \sqrt{\Omega_m/0.3} = 0.863 \pm 0.016$, and $h = 0.661 \pm 0.012$. For the same combination of datasets, but now considering a $\Lambda$CDM model with massive neutrinos and the same scale cut, we find: $\Omega_m = 0.328 \pm 0.009$, $\Omega_b = 0.05017^{+0.0009}_{-0.0008}$, $S_8 = 0.862 \pm 0.017$, and $h = 0.663^{+0.006}_{-0.007}$ and a 95\% credible interval (CI) upper limit of $\sum m_{\nu} < 0.14$ eV for a normal hierarchy. These results are competitive if not better than standard analyses with the same dataset, and demonstrate this should be a method of choice for future surveys, opening the door for their full exploitation in cross-correlations probes., Comment: 28 pages, 28 figures, 3 appendices

We present a novel approach for creating science-ready catalogs through a software infrastructure developed for the Dark Energy Survey (DES). We integrate the data products released by the DES Data Management and additional products created by the DES collaboration in an environment known as DES Science Portal. Each step involved in the creation of a science-ready catalog is recorded in a relational database and can be recovered at any time. We describe how the DES Science Portal automates the creation and characterization of lightweight catalogs for DES Year 1 Annual Release, and show its flexibility in creating multiple catalogs with different inputs and configurations. Finally, we discuss the advantages of this infrastructure for large surveys such as DES and the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope. The capability of creating science-ready catalogs efficiently and with full control of the inputs and configurations used is an important asset for supporting science analysis using data from large astronomical surveys., Comment: The second paper of the series about the DES Science Portal, submitted to the Astronomy & Computing journal. We perform a systematic search for long-term extreme variability quasars (EVQs) in the overlapping Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and 3-Year Dark Energy Survey (DES) imaging, which provide light curves spanning more than 15 years. We identified ~1000 EVQs with a maximum g band magnitude change of more than 1 mag over this period, about 10% of all quasars searched. The EVQs have L_bol~10^45-10^47 erg/s and L/L_Edd~0.01-1. Accounting for selection effects, we estimate an intrinsic EVQ fraction of ~30-50% among all g<~22 quasars over a baseline of ~15 years. These EVQs are good candidates for so-called "changing-look quasars", where a spectral transition between the two types of quasars (broad-line and narrow-line) is observed between the dim and bright states. We performed detailed multi-wavelength, spectral and variability analyses for the EVQs and compared to their parent quasar sample. We found that EVQs are distinct from a control sample of quasars matched in redshift and optical luminosity: (1) their UV broad emission lines have larger equivalent widths; (2) their Eddington ratios are systematically lower; and (3) they are more variable on all timescales. The intrinsic difference in quasar properties for EVQs suggest that internal processes associated with accretion are the main driver for the observed extreme long-term variability. However, despite their different properties, EVQs seem to be in the tail of a continuous distribution of quasar properties, rather than standing out as a distinct population. We speculate that EVQs are normal quasars accreting at relatively low accretion rates, where the accretion flow is more likely to experience instabilities that drive the factor of few changes in flux on multi-year timescales., Comment: submitted to ApJ; comments welcome

We present the measurement and interpretation of the angular power spectrum of nearby galaxies in the 2MASS Redshift Survey catalog with spectroscopic redshifts up to $z\approx 0.1$. We detect the angular power spectrum up to a multipole of $\ell\approx 1000$. We find that the measured power spectrum is dominated by galaxies living inside nearby galaxy clusters and groups. We use the halo occupation distribution (HOD) formalism to model the power spectrum, obtaining a fit with reasonable parameters. These HOD parameters are in agreement with the 2MASS galaxy distribution we measure toward the known nearby galaxy clusters, confirming validity of our analysis., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures

We report on SPT-CLJ2011-5228, a giant system of arcs created by a cluster at $z=1.06$. The arc system is notable for the presence of a bright central image. The source is a Lyman Break galaxy at $z_s=2.39$ and the mass enclosed within the 14 arc second radius Einstein ring is $10^{14.2}$ solar masses. We perform a full light profile reconstruction of the lensed images to precisely infer the parameters of the mass distribution. The brightness of the central image demands that the central total density profile of the lens be shallow. By fitting the dark matter as a generalized Navarro-Frenk-White profile---with a free parameter for the inner density slope---we find that the break radius is $270^{+48}_{-76}$ kpc, and that the inner density falls with radius to the power $-0.38\pm0.04$ at 68 percent confidence. Such a shallow profile is in strong tension with our understanding of relaxed cold dark matter halos; dark matter only simulations predict the inner density should fall as $r^{-1}$. The tension can be alleviated if this cluster is in fact a merger; a two halo model can also reconstruct the data, with both clumps (density going as $r^{-0.8}$ and $r^{-1.0}$) much more consistent with predictions from dark matter only simulations. At the resolution of our Dark Energy Survey imaging, we are unable to choose between these two models, but we make predictions for forthcoming Hubble Space Telescope imaging that will decisively distinguish between them., Comment: 13 Pages. We re-analyse the cosmic microwave background (CMB) Cold Spot (CS) anomaly with particular focus on understanding the bias a mask (contaminated by Galactic and point sources) may introduce. We measure the coldest spot, found by applying the Spherical Mexican Hat Wavelet transform on 100 000 cut-sky (masked) and full-sky CMB simulated maps. The CS itself is barely affected by the mask; we estimate a 94 per cent probability that the CS is the full-sky temperature minimum. However, approximately 48 per cent (masked fraction of the mask) of full-sky minima are obscured by the mask. Since the observed minima are slightly hotter than the full-sky ensemble of minima, a cut-sky analysis would have found the CS to be significant at approximately 2.2 sigma with a wavelet angular scale of R = 5 degrees. None the less, comparisons to full-sky minima show the CS significance to be only approximately 1.9 sigma and less than 2 sigma for all R. The CS on the last scattering surface may be hotter due to the integrated Sachs-Wolfe effect in the line of sight. However, our simulations show that this on average only approximately 10 per cent (about 10 micro K but consistent with zero) of the CS temperature profile. This is consistent with Lambda and cold dark matter reconstructions of this effect based on observed line-of-sight voids., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures, changes made to match version published in MNRAS

The variations of galaxy stellar masses and colour-types with the distance to projected cosmic filaments are quantified using the precise photometric redshifts of the COSMOS2015 catalogue extracted from COSMOS field (2 deg$^{2}$). Realistic mock catalogues are also extracted from the lightcone of the cosmological hydrodynamical simulation Horizon-AGN. They show that the photometric redshift accuracy of the observed catalogue ($\sigma_z<0.015$ at $M_*>10^{10}{\rm M}_{\odot}$ and $z<0.9$) is sufficient to provide 2D filaments that closely match their projected 3D counterparts. Transverse stellar mass gradients are measured in projected slices of thickness 75 Mpc between $0.5< z <0.9$, showing that the most massive galaxies are statistically closer to their neighbouring filament. At fixed stellar mass, passive galaxies are also found closer to their filament while active star-forming galaxies statistically lie further away. The contributions of nodes and local density are removed from these gradients to highlight the specific role played by the geometry of the filaments. We find that the measured signal does persist after this removal, clearly demonstrating that proximity to a filament is not equivalent to proximity to an over-density. These findings are in agreement with gradients measured both in 2D or 3D in the Horizon-AGN simulation and those observed in the spectroscopic VIPERS survey (which rely on the identification of 3D filaments). They are consistent with a picture in which the influence of the geometry of the large-scale environment drives anisotropic tides which impact the assembly history of galaxies, and hence their observed properties., Comment: 20 pages, 15 figures, 5 tables; submitted to MNRAS

We report the observation and physical characterization of the possible dwarf planet \UZ\ ("DeeDee"), a dynamically detached trans-Neptunian object discovered at 92 AU. This object is currently the second-most distant known trans-Neptunian object with reported orbital elements, surpassed in distance only by the dwarf planet Eris. The object was discovered with an $r$-band magnitude of 23.0 in data collected by the Dark Energy Survey between 2014 and 2016. Its 1140-year orbit has $(a,e,i) = (109~\mathrm{AU}, 0.65, 26.8^{\circ})$. It will reach its perihelion distance of 38 AU in the year 2142. Integrations of its orbit show it to be dynamically stable on Gyr timescales, with only weak interactions with Neptune. We have performed followup observations with ALMA, using 3 hours of on-source integration time to measure the object's thermal emission in the Rayleigh-Jeans tail. The signal is detected at 7$\sigma$ significance, from which we determine a $V$-band albedo of $13.1^{+3.3}_{-2.4}\mathrm{(stat)}^{+2.0}_{-1.4}\mathrm{(sys)}$ percent and a diameter of $635^{+57}_{-61}\mathrm{(stat)}^{+32}_{-39}\mathrm{(sys)}$~km, assuming a spherical body with uniform surface properties., Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures, accepted by ApJ Letters

Gravitational lensing information from the two and higher point statistics of the CMB temperature and polarization fields are intrinsically correlated because they are lensed by the same realization of structure between last scattering and observation. Using an analytic model for lens sample covariance, we show that there is one mode, separately measurable in the lensed CMB power spectra and lensing reconstruction, that carries most of this correlation. Once these measurements become lens sample variance dominated, this mode should provide a useful consistency check between the observables that is largely free of sampling and cosmological parameter errors. Violations of consistency could indicate systematic errors in the data and lens reconstruction or new physics at last scattering, any of which could bias cosmological inferences and delensing for gravitational waves. A second mode provides a weaker consistency check for a spatially flat universe. Our analysis isolates the additional information supplied by lensing in a model independent manner but is also useful for understanding and forecasting CMB cosmological parameter errors in the extended $\Lambda$CDM parameter space of dark energy, curvature and massive neutrinos. We present the discovery and preliminary characterization of a gravitationally lensed quasar with a source redshift $z_{s}=2.74$ and image separation of $2.9"$ lensed by a foreground $z_{l}=0.40$ elliptical galaxy. Since the images of gravitationally lensed quasars are the superposition of multiple point sources and a foreground lensing galaxy, we have developed a morphology independent multi-wavelength approach to the photometric selection of lensed quasar candidates based on Gaussian Mixture Models (GMM) supervised machine learning. Using this technique and $gi$ multicolour photometric observations from the Dark Energy Survey (DES), near IR $JK$ photometry from the VISTA Hemisphere Survey (VHS) and WISE mid IR photometry, we have identified a candidate system with two catalogue components with $i_{AB}=18.61$ and $i_{AB}=20.44$ comprised of an elliptical galaxy and two blue point sources. Spectroscopic follow-up with NTT and the use of an archival AAT spectrum show that the point sources can be identified as a lensed quasar with an emission line redshift of $z=2.739\pm0.003$ and a foreground early type galaxy with $z=0.400\pm0.002$. We model the system as a single isothermal ellipsoid and find the Einstein radius $\theta_E \sim 1.47"$, enclosed mass $M_{enc} \sim 4 \times 10^{11}$M$_{\odot}$ and a time delay of $\sim$52 days. We present the discovery of a z=0.65 low-ionization broad absorption line (LoBAL) quasar in a post-starburst galaxy in data from the Dark Energy Survey (DES) and spectroscopy from the Australian Dark Energy Survey (OzDES). LoBAL quasars are a minority of all BALs, and rarer still is that this object also exhibits broad FeII (an FeLoBAL) and Balmer absorption. This is the first BAL quasar that has signatures of recently truncated star formation, which we estimate ended about 40 Myr ago. The characteristic signatures of an FeLoBAL require high column densities, which could be explained by the emergence of a young quasar from an early, dust-enshrouded phase, or by clouds compressed by a blast wave. The age of the starburst component is comparable to estimates of the lifetime of quasars, so if we assume the quasar activity is related to the truncation of the star formation, this object is better explained by the blast wave scenario., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, and 1 table; Submitted to MNRAS. We present cosmological constraints from the Dark Energy Survey (DES) using a combined analysis of angular clustering of red galaxies and their cross-correlation with weak gravitational lensing of background galaxies. We use a 139 square degree contiguous patch of DES data from the Science Verification (SV) period of observations. Using large scale measurements, we constrain the matter density of the Universe as Omega_m = 0.31 +/- 0.09 and the clustering amplitude of the matter power spectrum as sigma_8 = 0.74 +/- 0.13 after marginalizing over seven nuisance parameters and three additional cosmological parameters. This translates into S_8 = sigma_8(Omega_m/0.3)^{0.16} = 0.74 +/- 0.12 for our fiducial lens redshift bin at 0.35

Host galaxy identification is a crucial step for modern supernova (SN) surveys such as the Dark Energy Survey (DES) and the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST), which will discover SNe by the thousands. Spectroscopic resources are limited, so in the absence of real-time SN spectra these surveys must rely on host galaxy spectra to obtain accurate redshifts for the Hubble diagram and to improve photometric classification of SNe. In addition, SN luminosities are known to correlate with host-galaxy properties. Therefore, reliable identification of host galaxies is essential for cosmology and SN science. We simulate SN events and their locations within their host galaxies to develop and test methods for matching SNe to their hosts. We use both real and simulated galaxy catalog data from the Advanced Camera for Surveys General Catalog and MICECATv2.0, respectively. We also incorporate "hostless" SNe residing in undetected faint hosts into our analysis, with an assumed hostless rate of 5%. Our fully automated algorithm is run on catalog data and matches SNe to their hosts with 91% accuracy. We find that including a machine learning component, run after the initial matching algorithm, improves the accuracy (purity) of the matching to 97% with a 2% cost in efficiency (true positive rate). Understanding the observed Cold Spot (CS) (temperature of ~ -150 mu K at its centre) on the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) is an outstanding problem. Explanations vary from assuming it is just a > 3 sigma primordial Gaussian fluctuation to the imprint of a supervoid via the Integrated Sachs-Wolfe and Rees-Sciama (ISW+RS) effects. Since single spherical supervoids cannot account for the full profile, the ISW+RS of multiple line-of-sight voids is studied here to mimic the structure of the cosmic web. Two structure configurations are considered. The first, through simulations of 20 voids, produces a central mean temperature of ~-50 mu K. In this model the central CS temperature lies at ~ 2 sigma but fails to explain the CS hot ring. An alternative multi-void model (using more pronounced compensated voids) produces much smaller temperature profiles, but contains a prominent hot ring. Arrangements containing closely placed voids at low redshift are found to be particularly well suited to produce CS-like profiles. We then measure the significance of the CS if CS-like profiles (which are fitted to the ISW+RS of multi-void scenarios) are removed. The CS tension with the LCDM model can be reduced dramatically for an array of temperature profiles smaller than the CS itself., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, as appears in MNRAS Letters

We present spectroscopic confirmation of two new lensed quasars via data obtained at the 6.5m Magellan/Baade Telescope. The lens candidates have been selected from the Dark Energy Survey (DES) and WISE based on their multi-band photometry and extended morphology in DES images. Images of DES J0115-5244 show two blue point sources at either side of a red galaxy. Our long-slit data confirm that both point sources are images of the same quasar at $z_{s}=1.64.$ The Einstein Radius estimated from the DES images is $0.51$". DES J2200+0110 is in the area of overlap between DES and the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). Two blue components are visible in the DES and SDSS images. The SDSS fiber spectrum shows a quasar component at $z_{s}=2.38$ and absorption compatible with Mg II and Fe II at $z_{l}=0.799$, which we tentatively associate with the foreground lens galaxy. The long-slit Magellan spectra show that the blue components are resolved images of the same quasar. The Einstein Radius is $0.68$" corresponding to an enclosed mass of $1.6\times10^{11}\,M_{\odot}.$ Three other candidates were observed and rejected, two being low-redshift pairs of starburst galaxies, and one being a quasar behind a blue star. These first confirmation results provide an important empirical validation of the data-mining and model-based selection that is being applied to the entire DES dataset., Comment: 7 pages, 1 figure, 2 tables, MNRAS subm. The Square Kilometer Array (SKA) has the potential to produce galaxy redshift surveys which will be competitive with other state of the art cosmological experiments in the next decade. In this chapter we summarise what capabilities the first and the second phases of the SKA will be able to achieve in its current state of design. We summarise the different cosmological experiments which are outlined in further detail in other chapters of this Science Book. The SKA will be able to produce competitive Baryonic Oscillation (BAOs) measurements in both its phases. The first phase of the SKA will provide similar measurements as optical and IR experiments with completely different systematic effects whereas the second phase being transformational in terms of its statistical power. The SKA will produce very accurate Redshift Space Distortions (RSD) measurements, being superior to other experiments at lower redshifts, due to the large number of galaxies. Cross correlations of the galaxy redshift data from the SKA with radio continuum surveys and optical surveys will provide extremely good calibration of photometric redshifts as well as extremely good bounds on modifications of gravity. Basing on a Principle Component Analysis (PCA) approach, we find that the SKA will be able to provide competitive constraints on dark energy and modified gravity models. Due to the large area covered the SKA it will be a transformational experiment in measuring physics from the largest scales such as non-Gaussian signals from $\textrm{f}_{\textrm{nl}}$. Finally, the SKA might produce the first real time measurement of the redshift drift. By the time that the first phase of the Square Kilometre Array is deployed it will be able to perform state of the art Large Scale Structure (LSS) as well as Weak Gravitational Lensing (WGL) measurements of the distribution of matter in the Universe. In this chapter we concentrate on the synergies that result from cross-correlating these different SKA data products as well as external correlation with the weak lensing measurements available from CMB missions. We show that the Dark Energy figures of merit obtained individually from WGL/LSS measurements and their independent combination is significantly increased when their full cross-correlations are taken into account. This is due to the increased knowledge of galaxy bias as a function of redshift as well as the extra information from the different cosmological dependences of the cross-correlations. We show that the cross-correlation between a spectroscopic LSS sample and a weak lensing sample with photometric redshifts can calibrate these same photometric redshifts, and their scatter, to high accuracy by modelling them as nuisance parameters and fitting them simultaneously cosmology. Finally we show that Modified Gravity parameters are greatly constrained by this cross-correlations because weak lensing and redshift space distortions (from the LSS survey) break strong degeneracies in common parameterisations of modified gravity., Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures. Lensing of the CMB by modes that are larger than the size of the survey dilates intrinsic scales in the temperature and polarization fields and coherently shifts their observed power spectra with respect to the ensemble or all-sky mean. The effect can be simply encapsulated as a contribution to the power spectrum covariance matrix in accordance with the lensing trispectrum or as an additional parameter, the mean convergence in the field, for parameter estimation. It should be included for upcoming surveys that precisely measure acoustic polarization features deep into the damping tail at multipoles of $\ell \gtrsim 1500$ with less than $10\%$ of sky. Its omission may lead to seemingly conflicting values for the angular scale of the sound horizon which may then provide erroneous cosmological parameters when compared to baryon acoustic oscillation measurements., Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures

Cross-correlating gamma-ray maps with locations of galaxies in the low-redshift Universe vastly increases sensitivity to signatures of annihilation of dark matter particles. Low-redshift galaxies are ideal targets, as the largest contribution to anisotropy in the gamma-ray sky from annihilation comes from $z\lesssim 0.1$, where we expect minimal contributions from astrophysical sources such as blazars. Cross-correlating the five-year data of Fermi-LAT with the redshift catalog of the 2MASS survey can detect gamma rays from annihilation if dark matter has the canonical annihilation cross section and its mass is smaller than $\sim$100 GeV., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures; accepted for publication in Physical Review D

The angular power spectrum is a powerful statistic for analysing cosmological signals imprinted in the clustering of matter. However, current galaxy and quasar surveys cover limited portions of the sky, and are contaminated by systematics that can mimic cosmological signatures and jeopardise the interpretation of the measured power spectra. We provide a framework for obtaining unbiased estimates of the angular power spectra of large-scale structure surveys at the largest scales using quadratic estimators. The method is tested by analysing the 600 CMASS mock catalogues constructed by Manera et al. (2013) for the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS). We then consider the Richards et al. (2009) catalogue of photometric quasars from the Sixth Data Release (DR6) of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), which is known to include significant stellar contamination and systematic uncertainties. Focusing on the sample of ultraviolet-excess (UVX) sources, we show that the excess clustering power present on the largest-scales can be largely mitigated by making use of improved sky masks and projecting out the modes corresponding to the principal systematics. In particular, we find that the sample of objects with photometric redshift $1.3 < z_p < 2.2$ exhibits no evidence of contamination when using our most conservative mask and mode projection. This indicates that any residual systematics are well within the statistical uncertainties. We consider the reconstruction of the CMB lensing potential and its power spectrum of the full sphere in presence of sky-cuts due to point sources and Galactic contaminations. Those two effects are treated separately. Small regions contaminated by point sources are filled in using Gaussian constrained realizations. The Galactic plane is simply masked using an apodized mask before lensing reconstruction. This algorithm recovers the power spectrum of the lensing potential with no significant bias., Comment: Submitted to A&A

Gravitational lensing of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) encodes cosmological information in the observed anisotropies of temperature and polarization. Accurate extraction of this additional information requires precise modeling of the covariance matrix of the power spectra of observed CMB fields. We introduce a new analytical model to describe the non-Gaussian structure of this covariance matrix and display the importance of second-order terms that were previously neglected. When compared with direct numerical simulations our model captures parameter errors to better than a few percent for cases where the non-Gaussianity causes an order unity degradation in errors. We also provide a detailed comparison between the information content of lensed CMB power spectra and ideal reconstruction of the lensing potential. We illustrate the impact of the non-Gaussian terms in the power spectrum covariance by providing Fisher errors on the sum of the masses of the neutrinos, the dark energy equation of state, and the curvature of the Universe., Comment: Modified to match published version. The \Lambda CDM standard model, although an excellent parametrization of the present cosmological data, requires two as yet unobserved components, Dark Matter and Dark Energy, for more than 95% of the Universe. Faced to this unsatisfactory situation, we study an unconventional cosmology, the Dirac-Milne universe, a matter-antimatter symmetric cosmology, in which antimatter is supposed to present a negative active gravitational mass. The main feature of this cosmology is the linear evolution of the scale factor with time which directly solves the age and horizon problems of a matter-dominated universe. We study the concordance of this model to the cosmological test of Type Ia Supernov\ae\ distance measurements and calculate the theoretical primordial abundances of light elements for this cosmology. We also show that the acoustic scale of the Cosmic Microwave Background naturally emerges at the degree scale despite an open geometry., Comment: Replaced to match published version

Faced to this unsatisfactory situation, we study an unconventional cosmology, the Dirac-Milne universe, a matter-antimatter symmetric cosmology, in which antimatter is supposed to present a negative active gravitational mass. We show that this universe remarkably satisfies the cosmological tests for the age of the Universe, Big-Bang Nucleosynthesis, and Type Ia Supernovae data. Most surprisingly, it also provides the degree scale for the first acoustic peak of the Cosmological Microwave Background. This simple model, without any adjustable parameter or need for Dark Matter or Dark Energy, is a reminder that we should look for simpler and more motivated cosmological models than the present LCDM standard model., Comment: 4 pages
