The presence of a weak oxygen emission at 130.4-nm resulting from the O 3P-3S transition was first detected in limb observations of the Martian aurora with SPICAM/Mars Express (Soret et al., 2016). It is mostly excited by direct impact of energetic electrons on ground-based O(3P) atoms, but the 130.4-nm radiation is affected by multiple scattering and absorption by CO2. In April 2021, the Emirates Mars Ultraviolet Spectrometer (EMUS) instrument (Holsclaw et al., 2021) on board the HOPE Emirates orbiter started collecting spectral images in the 110-180 nm range with a much increased sensitivity. The OI 135.6-nm emission corresponding to the 3P-5S forbidden transition has also been observed (Jain et al., 2022). In addition, EMUS is taking images of the discrete and sinuous aurora at 130.4 nm. We present Monte Carlo model simulations of the production of the O 3S and 5S excited states for different initial electron energies and discuss possible seasonal variations. We solve the radiative transfer equation for the 130.4-nm triplet and show that the I(130.4 nm/I(135.6 nm) nadir intensity ratio is expected to widely vary with the initial electron energy. These variations result from two effects:The different shapes of the two emission cross sections since the optically thick 3P-3S resonance transition is permitted while 3P-5S is forbidden the radiation entrapment of the 130.4 nm triplet by atmospheric atomic oxygen coupled with absorption by CO2. We also discuss the sensitivity of the 130.4-nm nadir brightness to the energy distribution of the incoming auroral electrons. ReferencesJain, S. et al. The Far Ultra Violet (FUV) ultraviolet imager onboard the NASA-ICON mission is dedicated to the observation and study of the ionosphere dynamics at mid and low latitudes. We compare O(+) density profiles provided by the ICON FUV instrument during nighttime with electron density profiles measured by the COSMIC-2 constellation (C2) and ground-based ionosondes. Co-located simultaneous observations are compared, covering the period from November 2019 to July 2020, which produces several thousands of coincidences. Manual scaling of ionogram sequences ensures the reliability of the ionosonde profiles, while C2 data are carefully selected using an automatic quality control algorithm. Photoelectron contribution coming from the magnetically conjugated hemisphere is clearly visible in FUV data around solstices and has been filtered out from our analysis. We find that the FUV observations are consistent with the C2 and ionosonde measurements, with an average positive bias lower than 1 × 10(11)e/m(3). When restricting the analysis to cases having an N(m)F(2) value larger than 5 × 10(11)e/m(3), FUV provides the peak electron density with a mean difference with C2 of 10%. The peak altitude, also determined from FUV observations, is found to be 15 km above that obtained from C2, and 38 km above the ionosonde value on average.

Results of model computations of the interaction of the high-energy protons and hydrogen atoms (H/H+) precipitating into the Martian atmosphere are presented. These computations were performed using a modification of the kinetic Monte Carlo model developed earlier for the analysis of the data from the MEX/ASPERA-3 instrument onboard the Mars Express spacecraft and the MAVEN/SWIA instrument onboard the MAVEN spacecraft. In this modification of the model, an arbitrary (three-dimensional) structure of the magnetic field of Mars is taken into account for the first time. With local measurements of all three components of the magnetic field, not only the flux of protons penetrating into the atmosphere, but also the degradation of the H/H+ flux along the spacecraft orbit and the formation of upward fluxes of protons and hydrogen atoms scattered by the atmosphere, can now be described. A comparison of simulations and measurements of proton fluxes at low altitudes are used to infer the efficiency of charge exchange between the solar wind and the extended Martian hydrogen corona. It was found that the induced magnetic field plays a very important role in the formation of the proton flux back-scattered by the atmosphere and strongly controls its magnitude.

Enhancements of the dayside Lyman-α emission by as much as ∼50% have been observed between 120 and 130 km in the lower Martian thermosphere from the Mars Express and MAVEN satellites, usually following solar events such as coronal mass ejections and corotating interaction regions. They have been assumed to be optical signatures of proton aurora related to an increase in the solar wind proton flux hitting Mars’ bow shock. We present model simulations of the Lyman-α line profiles at different altitudes. These are partly guided by in situ measurements of the energy spectrum of protons in the magnetosheath region by the SWIA instrument on board the MAVEN spacecraft. We show that the auroral Lyman-α line profile is significantly broader than the hydrogen core of the planetary thermal H atom. Consequently, most of the auroral emission is produced outside the optically thick hydrogen core and creates the observed intensity enhancement. Simulations with incident energetic hydrogen atoms (H ENAs) produce a somewhat broader line profile. Monte Carlo calculations are made separately for incident solar wind protons and H ENAs produced by charge exchange in the hydrogen corona. Absorption by CO2 along the line of sight significantly affects the intensity distribution in the lower thermosphere. The calculated altitude of the peak emission for both types of incident particles is consistent with the observed characteristics of the proton aurora. We show that the presence of a horizontal induced magnetic field somewhat increases the line width and decreases the altitude of the emission peak as a consequence of the magnetic barrier effect on proton precipitation. The brightness of the Lyman-α emission also drops as a result of increased magnetic shielding of the protons.

The Ionospheric Connection Explorer, or ICON, is a new NASA Explorer mission that will explore the boundary between Earth and space to understand the physical connection between our world and our space environment. This connection is made in the ionosphere, which has long been known to exhibit variability associated with the sun and solar wind. However, it has been recognized in the 21st century that equally significant changes in ionospheric conditions are apparently associated with energy and momentum propagating upward from our own atmosphere. ICON's goal is to weigh the competing impacts of these two drivers as they influence our space environment. Here we describe the specific science objectives that address this goal, as well as the means by which they will be achieved. The instruments selected, the overall performance requirements of the science payload and the operational requirements are also described. ICON's development began in 2013 and the mission is on track for launch in 2017. ICON is developed and managed by the Space Sciences Laboratory at the University of California, Berkeley, with key contributions from several partner institutions.

Line-of-sight integration of emissions from planetary and cometary atmospheres is the Abel transform of the emission rate, under the spherical symmetry assumption. Indefinite integrals constructed from the Abel transform integral are useful for implementing remote sensing data analysis methods, such as the numerical inverse Abel transform giving the volume emission rate compatible with the observation. We obtain analytical expressions based on a suitable, non-alternating, series development to compute those indefinite integrals. We establish expressions allowing absolute accuracy control of the convergence of these series depending on the number of terms involved. We compare the analytical method with numerical computation techniques, which are found to be sufficiently accurate as well. Inverse Abel transform fitting is then tested in order to establish that the expected emission rate profiles can be retrieved from the observation of both planetary and cometary atmospheres. We show that the method is robust, especially when Tikhonov regularization is included, although it must be carefully tuned when the observation varies across many orders of magnitude. A first application is conducted over observation of comet 46P/Wirtanen, showing some variability possibly attributable to an evolution of the contamination by dust and icy grains. A second application is considered to deduce the 557.7 nm volume emission rate profile of the metastable oxygen atom in the upper atmosphere of planet Mars.

We propose a mechanism for the formation of the horse-collar auroral configuration common during periods of strongly northwards interplanetary magnetic field, invoking the action of dual-lobe reconnection (DLR). Auroral observations are provided by the Imager for Magnetopause-to-Auroras Global Exploration (IMAGE) satellite and spacecraft of the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP). We also use ionospheric flow measurements from DMSP and polar maps of field-aligned currents (FACs) derived from the Active Magnetosphere and Planetary Electrodynamics Response Experiment (AMPERE). Sunward convection is observed within the dark polar cap, with antisunwards flows within the horse-collar auroral region, together with the NBZ FAC distribution expected to be associated with DLR. We suggest that newly-closed flux is transported antisunwards and to dawn and dusk within the reverse lobe cell convection pattern associated with DLR, causing the polar cap to acquire a teardrop shape and weak auroras to form at high latitudes. Horse-collar auroras are a common feature of the quiet magnetosphere, and this model provides a first understanding of their formation, resolving several outstanding questions regarding the nature of DLR and the magnetospheric structure and dynamics during northwards IMF. The model can also provide insights into the trapping of solar wind plasma by the magnetosphere and the formation of a low-latitude boundary layer and cold, dense plasma sheet. We speculate that prolonged DLR could lead to a fully closed magnetosphere, with the formation of horse-collar auroras being an intermediate step.

The OI 557.7 nm green line has been measured in the Martian dayglow for the first time with the UVIS visible-ultraviolet spectrograph on board ESA’s Trace Gas Orbiter (Gérard et al., 2020). The first observations started in April 2019 in a special mode where the spacecraft is tilted to observe the limb with the UVIS nadir channel (Vandaele et al., 2015, Patel et al., 2017). The instrument detected the presence of bright green dayglow emission on every of those observations. The main peak altitude is located near 80 km, and its intensity varies as a result of the changing distance from sun, the local time and latitude of the observations. A second, less pronounced, emission peak is observed near 110 km. Photochemical model simulations (Gkouvelis et al., 2018) used the MCD density distribution (Forget et al., 1999) have been made to understand the sources of this airglow emission. It is able to reproduce the altitude and the brightness of the airglow layer. It indicates that the green line dayglow on Mars is essentially produced by photodissociation of CO2 molecules by solar far ultraviolet radiation (Fox & Dalgarno, 1979). A fraction of the oxygen atoms is formed in the 1S metastable state that produces the green emission. In this presentation, we describe additional dayside observations obtained since December 2019. For this purpose, the spacecraft has been used in a special mode where it is re-oriented so that the UVIS channel observed the sunlit limb (Lopez-Valverde et al., 2018). We analyse the observed limb profile variations and the changing altitude of the peak emission resulting from the variations of the pressure levels in the mesosphere (Gkouvelis et al., 2020). The measured intensities are compared with model calculations of the O(1S) density in the conditions of the observations. The terrestrial magnetosphere is perpetually exposed to and significantly deformed by the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) in the solar wind. This deformation is typically detected at discrete locations by space‐ and ground‐based observations. Earth's aurora, on the other hand, is a globally distributed phenomenon that may be used to elucidate magnetospheric deformations caused by IMF variations, as well as plasma supply from the deformed magnetotail to the high‐latitude atmosphere. We report the utilization of an auroral form known as the transpolar arc (TPA) to diagnose the plasma dynamics of the globally deformed magnetosphere. Nine TPAs examined in this study have two types of a newly identified morphology, which are designated as “J”‐ and “L”‐shaped TPAs from their shapes and are shown to have antisymmetric morphologies in the Northern Hemisphere and Southern Hemisphere, depending on the IMF polarity. The TPA‐associated ionospheric current profiles suggest that electric currents flowing along the magnetic field lines (field‐aligned currents [FACs]), connecting the magnetotail and the ionosphere, may be related to the “J”‐ and “L”‐shaped TPA formations. The FACs can be generated by velocity shear between fast plasma flows associated with nightside magnetic reconnection and slower background magnetotail plasma flows. Complex large‐scale TPA FAC structures, previously unraveled by an magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulation, cannot be elucidated by our observations. However, our interpretation of TPA features in a global context facilitates the usage of TPA as a diagnostic tool to effectively remote sense globally deformed terrestrial and planetary magnetospheric processes in response to the IMF and solar wind plasma conditions.

We report limb measurements of the oxygen dayglow emission at 297.2 nm performed during four Martian dust storms. The emission peak provides a good remote sensing tool to probe changes of the altitude of the 39 mPa pressure level for the first time during dust storms. We illustrate the time variation of these changes and compare them with the infrared opacity in the lower atmosphere. We find that the 39 mPa level rises in response to the increase in dust opacity. It reaches a plateau, and additional dust load does not significantly increase its altitude. Numerical simulations with the LMD global circulation model shows a similar response, except for the event observed during MY33 regional storm when the model fails to reproduce the observed variations. Observations collected during the onset of the global dust storm in June 2018 show that the upper atmosphere rapidly responds within two Martian days to the increased amount of tropospheric dust. ©2020. Typical auroral events in the Martian atmosphere, such as discrete and diffuse auroral emissions detected by UV spectrometers onboard ESA Mars Express and NASA MAVEN, are investigated. Auroral electron kinetic energy distribution functions and energy spectra of the upward and downward electron fluxes are obtained by electron transport calculations using the kinetic Monte Carlo model. These characteristics of auroral electron fluxes make it possible to calculate both the precipitation-induced changes in the atmosphere and the observed manifestations of auroral events on Mars. In particular, intensities of discrete and diffuse auroral emissions in the UV and visible wavelength ranges (Soret et al., 2016; Bisikalo et al., 2017; Gerard et al., 2017). For these conditions of auroral events, the analysis is carried out, and the contribution of the fluxes of precipitating electrons to the heating and ionization of the Martian atmosphere is estimated. Numerical calculations show that in the case of discrete auroral events the effect of the residual crustal magnetic field leads to a significant increase in the upward fluxes of electrons, which causes a decrease in the rates of heating and ionization of the atmospheric gas in comparison with the calculations without taking into account the residual magnetic field. It is shown that all the above-mentioned impact factors of auroral electron precipitation processes should be taken into account both in the photochemical models of the Martian atmosphere and in the interpretation of observations of the chemical composition and its variations using the ACS instrument onboard ExoMars.

The expanding/contracting polar cap (ECPC) model, or the time-dependent Dungey cycle, provides a theoretical framework for understanding solar wind-magnetosphere-ionosphere coupling. The ECPC describes the relationship between magnetopause reconnection and substorm growth phase, magnetotail reconnection and substorm expansion phase, associated changes in auroral morphology, and ionospheric convective motions. Despite the many successes of the model, there has yet to be a rigorous test of the predictions or nowcasts made regarding ionospheric convection, which remains a final hurdle for the validation of the ECPC. In this study we undertake a comparison of ionospheric convection, as measured in situ by ion drift meters on board DMSP (Defense Meteorological Satellite Program) satellites and from the ground by SuperDARN (Super Dual Auroral Radar Network), with motions nowcasted by a theoretical model. The model is coupled to measurements of changes in the size of the polar cap made using global auroral imagery from the IMAGE FUV (Imager for Magnetopause to Aurora Global Exploration Far Ultraviolet) instrument, as well as the dayside reconnection rate, estimated using the OMNI data set. The results show that we can largely nowcast the magnitudes of ionospheric convection flows using the context of our understanding of magnetic reconnection at the magnetopause and in the magnetotail.

We use remote sensing of the proton aurora with the IMAGE-FUV SI12 (Imager for Magnetopause to Aurora Global Exploration–Far Ultraviolet–Spectrographic Imaging at 121.8 nm) instrument and radar measurements of the ionospheric convection from the SuperDARN (Super Dual Aurora Radar Network) facility to estimate the open magnetic flux in the Earth's magnetosphere and the reconnection rates at the dayside magnetopause and in the magnetotail during intervals of steady magnetospheric convection (SMC). We find that SMC intervals occur with relatively high open magnetic flux (average ∼ 0.745 GWb, standard deviation ∼ 0.16 GWb), which is often found to be nearly steady, when the magnetic flux opening and closure rates approximately balance around 55 kV on average, with a standard deviation of 21 kV. We find that the residence timescale of open magnetic flux, defined as the ratio between the open magnetospheric flux and the flux closure rate, is roughly 4 h during SMCs. Interestingly, this number is approximately what can be deduced from the discussion of the length of the tail published by Dungey (1965), assuming a solar wind speed of ∼ 450 km s−1. We also infer an enhanced convection velocity in the tail, driving open magnetic flux to the nightside reconnection site. We compare our results with previously published studies in order to identify different magnetospheric modes. These are ordered by increasing open magnetic flux and reconnection rate as quiet conditions, SMCs, substorms (with an important overlap between these last two) and sawtooth intervals.

We present observations of the Northern Hemisphere auroras taken with the far ultraviolet cameras onboard the Imager for Magnetopause‐to‐Aurora Global Exploration spacecraft during a compression of the magnetosphere by a solar wind pressure step on 30 December 2001. The compression occurs during a period of northward interplanetary magnetic field which has given rise to the presence of a pair of transpolar arcs (TPAs) near the dawnside oval. The compression causes a brightening of the oval, from dayside to nightside over the course of 10 min, followed by a brightening of the midnight sector oval and TPAs from nightside to dayside, again over 10 min. We suggest that the brightening is caused by pitch angle scattering of particles trapped on closed magnetic field lines and that the sequence of the brightening tracks the solar wind pressure step as it progresses along the length of the magnetotail. Traveling at 600 km s , the step reaches up to 90 down‐tail over the period of brightening, suggesting that the magnetic field lines which map to the TPAs are closed and stretch almost this length down‐tail.

The oxygen emission at 557.7 nm is a ubiquitous component of the spectrum of the terrestrial polar aurora and the reason for its usual green colour(1). It is also observed as a thin layer of glow surrounding the Earth near 90 km altitude in the dayside atmosphere(2,3)but it has so far eluded detection in other planets. Here we report dayglow observations of the green line outside the Earth. They have been performed with the Nadir and Occultation for Mars Discovery ultraviolet and visible spectrometer instrument on board the European Space Agency's ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter. Using a special observation mode, scans of the dayside limb provide the altitude distribution of the intensity of the 557.7 nm line and its variability. Two intensity peaks are observed near 80 and 120 km altitude, corresponding to photodissociation of CO(2)by solar Lyman alpha and extreme ultraviolet radiation, respectively. A weaker emission, originating from the same upper level of the oxygen atom, is observed in the near ultraviolet at 297.2 nm. These simultaneous measurements of both oxygen lines make it possible to directly derive a ratio of 16.5 between the visible and ultraviolet emissions, and thereby clarify a controversy between discordant ab initio calculations and atmospheric measurements that has persisted despite multiple efforts. This ratio is considered a standard for measurements connecting the ultraviolet and visible spectral regions. This result has consequences for the study of auroral and airglow processes and for spectral calibration. The oxygen emission at 557.7 nm, responsible for the green colour of auroras on Earth, is present in two layers at 80 and 120 km altitude on the dayside atmosphere of Mars. Observations with the SPICAM instrument on board Mars Express have shown the occasional presence of localized ultraviolet nightside emissions associated with enhanced energetic electron fluxes. These features generally occur in regions with significant radial crustal magnetic field. We use a Monte-Carlo electron transport model to investigate the role of the magnetic field on the downward and upward electron fluxes, the brightness and the emitted power of auroral emissions. Simulations based on an ASPERA-3 measured auroral electron precipitation indicate that magnetic mirroring leads to an intensification of the energy flux carried by upward moving electrons– from about 20% in the absence of crustal magnetic field up to 33–78% when magnetic field is included depending on magnetic field topology. Conservation of the particle flux in a flux tube implies that the presence of the B-field does not appreciably modify the emission rate profiles for an initially isotropic pitch angle distribution. However, we find that crustal magnetic field results in increase of the upward electron flux, and, consequently, in reduction of the total auroral brightness for given energy flux of precipitating electrons.

Remote observation of cometary atmospheres produces a measurement of the cometary emissions integrated along the line of sight. This integration is the so-called Abel transform of the local emission rate. The observation is generally interpreted under the hypothesis of spherical symmetry of the coma. Under that hypothesis, the Abel transform can be inverted. We derive a numerical inversion method adapted to cometary atmospheres using both analytical results and least squares fitting techniques. This method, derived under the usual hypothesis of spherical symmetry, allows us to retrieve the radial distribution of the emission rate of any unabsorbed emission, which is the fundamental, physically meaningful quantity governing the observation. A Tikhonov regularization technique is also applied to reduce the possibly deleterious effects of the noise present in the observation and to warrant that the problem remains well posed. Standard error propagation techniques are included in order to estimate the uncertainties affecting the retrieved emission rate. Several theoretical tests of the inversion techniques are carried out to show its validity and robustness. In particular, we show that the Abel inversion of real data is only weakly sensitive to an offset applied to the input flux, which implies that the method, applied to the study of a cometary atmosphere, is only weakly dependent on uncertainties on the sky background which has to be subtracted from the raw observations of the coma. We apply the method to observations of three different comets observed using the TRAPPIST telescope: 103P/ Hartley 2, F6/ Lemmon and A1/ Siding Spring. We show that the method retrieves realistic emission rates, and that characteristic lengths and production rates can be derived from the emission rate for both CN and C2 molecules. We show that the retrieved characteristic lengths can differ from those obtained from a direct least squares fitting over the observed flux of radiation, and that discrepancies can be reconciled for by correcting this flux by an offset (to which the inverse Abel transform is nearly not sensitive). The A1/Siding Spring observations were obtained very shortly after the comet produced an outburst, and we show that the emission rate derived from the observed flux of CN emission at 387 nm and from the C2 emission at 514.1 nm both present an easily-identifiable shoulder that corresponds to the separation between pre- and post-outburst gas. As a general result, we show that diagnosing properties and features of the coma using the emission rate is easier than directly using the observed flux, because the Abel transform produces a smoothing that blurs the signatures left by features present in the coma. We also determine the parameters of a Haser model fitting the inverted data and fitting the line-of-sight integrated observation, for which we provide the exact analytical expression of the line-of-sight integration of the Haser model.

We apply a new technique to remotely sense the seasonal altitude variation of the 0 . 39 μ bar isobar level in this region. We present results from observations of airglow limb profiles collected during two Martian years with the Imaging UltraViolet Spectrograph (IUVS) onboard MAVEN. IUVS has collected tens of thousands of Martian airglow limb profiles since the Fall of 2014. We analyze the global dayglow dataset of the 297.2 nm emission corresponding to the O( 3 P-1S) forbidden transition. The vertical profile of this unique emission shows two peaks: one around 120 km and a second one near 80 km. We use both peaks to trace the altitude changes of the isobars in this atmospheric region. We map and compare them with the seasonal variations of the O( 1 S) with CO 2 + UV doublet peak. We find that the altitude of the 0 . 39 μ bar level varies by up to 20 km. We show that the dayglow model overpredicts the lower peak altitude by 2–5 km from the observations while it underpredicts the upper peak altitude with the same offset. The best agreement near 80 km is obtained by decreasing the CO 2 density by the Mars Climate Database (MCD) by about 40%.

Average proton and electron auroral images are compiled from three years of observations by the IMAGE spacecraft, binned according to concurrent KP and upstream solar wind conditions measured by the ACE spacecraft. The solar wind parameters include solar wind velocity, density, and pressure, interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) magnitude and orientation, and an estimate of the magnetopause reconnection rate. We use both (a) the overall variation in brightness in the images and (b) the variation in location of the aurorae with respect to the binning parameters to determine which parameters best order the auroral response. We find that the brightness varies by a factor of ~50 with KP, a similar amount with estimated dayside reconnection voltage, ~15 with the IMF, ~3 with solar wind density, ~2 with solar wind velocity, and ~5 with pressure. Clearly, geomagnetic activity as measured by KP and auroral dynamics are closely associated. In terms of the solar wind-magnetosphere coupling that drives auroral dynamics, the IMF is of paramount importance in modulating this, with solar wind speed and density playing a lesser role. Dayside reconnection voltage, derived from the solar wind velocity and IMF magnitude and orientation, orders the data almost as well as KP, though we find a plateau in the auroral response between voltages of 100 and 150 kV. We also discuss changes in configuration and overall size of the average auroral oval with upstream conditions.

We compare the location of the polar cap boundary (PCB) determined using two different techniques, and use them as proxies for the open-closed field line boundary (OCB). Electron temperatures from observations of the EISCAT radar facility are used to estimate the latitude of the PCB along the meridian of the EISCAT VHF beam. The second method utilizes global images of proton aurora obtained by the IMAGE satellite FUV SI12 instrument. These methods are applied to three different intervals. In two events, the agreement between the methods is good and the mean of the difference is within the resolution of the observations. In a third event, the PCB estimated from EISCAT data is located several degrees poleward of that obtained from the IMAGE FUV SI12 instrument. Comparison of the reconnection electric field estimated from the two methods shows that high-resolution measurements both in time and space are needed to capture the variations in reconnection electric field during substorm expansion. In addition to the two techniques introduced above to determine the PCB location, we also use a search for the location of the reversal of the east-west component of the equivalent current known as the magnetic convection reversal boundary (MCRB). The MCRB from the MIRACLE magnetometer chain mainly follows the motion of the polar cap boundary during different substorm phases, but differences arise near the Harang discontinuity.

The article presents a review of scientific problems and methods of ultraviolet astronomy, focusing on perspective scientific problems (directions) whose solution requires UV space observatories. These include reionization and the history of star formation in the Universe, searches for dark baryonic matter, physical and chemical processes in the interstellar medium and protoplanetary disks, the physics of accretion and outflows in astrophysical objects, from Active Galactic Nuclei to close binary stars, stellar activity (for both low-mass and high-mass stars), and processes occurring in the atmospheres of both planets in the solar system and exoplanets. Technological progress in UV astronomy achieved in recent years is also considered. The well advanced, international, Russian-led Spektr-UV (World Space Observatory—Ultraviolet) project is described in more detail. This project is directed at creating a major space observatory operational in the ultraviolet (115–310 nm). This observatory will provide an effective, and possibly the only, powerful means of observing in this spectral range over the next ten years, and will be an powerful tool for resolving many topical scientific problems.
