Traditionally, two fundamentally different theoretical approaches have been used in emotion research to model (human) emotions: discrete emotion theories and dimensional approaches. More recent neurophysiological models like the hierarchical emotion theory suggest that both should be integrated. The aim of this review is to provide neurocognitive evidence for this perspective with a particular focus on experimental studies manipulating anxiety and/or curiosity. We searched for evidence that the neuronal correlates of discrete and dimensional emotional systems are tightly connected. Our review suggests that the ACC (anterior cingulate cortex) responds to both, anxiety, and curiosity. While amygdala activation has been primarily observed for anxiety, at least the NAcc (nucleus accumbens) responds to both, anxiety and curiosity. When these two areas closely collaborate, as indicated by strong connectivity, this may indicate emotion regulation, particularly when the situation is not predictable.

Land-use change is the main cause of high runoff compared to other factors. The type of land use also plays a role in determining the amount of runoff that occurs. The Upstream Ciliwung watershed is blamed as the main causes of the flood disaster in Jakarta, the capital city. The land use in the upper stream has changed and causes increasing of run off to be higher than the capacity of river to drain it. This study aims to explore the land use changes of the Upstream Ciliwung Watershed from 1996 to 2016 and their consequences on the stream run off. Furthermore, the study also recommends the efforts needed to reduce river water discharge. The land use changes are identified by using spatial analysis method. The calculation of run off uses the rational method. Average rainfall data for every ten years is calculated by use of Gumbell distribution formula. The study shows that in the period 1996 – 2016, there was a change in land use in the upstream Ciliwung watershed. The area that continues to decline includes primary forest, open land, paddy fields, shrubs, and mixed gardens, all of which are categorized as undeveloped areas. The runoff discharge from 1996 – 2016 has increased from 278.77 to 465.57 mm/second that indicate runoff discharge is already in the Standby I position. Efforts that need to be made to reduce runoff water flow in the Ciliwung watershed are: 1) consistently develop and control land use change in the area based on the Jabodetabekpunjur Spatial Planning 2) consistently apply the building coverage ratio (BCR) regulation; 3) construct engineering and technology approach such as build infiltration wells in settlement, 4) forest rehabilitation and 5) conducting law enforcement.

Behavioral performance metrics employed to assess the usability of visual displays are increasingly coupled with eye tracking measures to provide additional insights into the decision-making processes supported by visual displays. Eye tracking metrics can be coupled with users' neural data to investigate how human cognition interplays with emotions during visuo-spatial tasks. To contribute to these efforts, we present results of a study in a realistic air traffic control (ATC) setting with animated ATC displays, where ATC experts and novices were presented with an aircraft movement detection task. We find that higher stationary gaze entropy – which indicates a larger spatial distribution of visual gaze on the display – and expertise result in better response accuracy, and that stationary entropy positively predicts response time even after controlling for animation type and expertise. As a secondary contribution, we found that a single component comprised of engagement, measured by EEG and self-reported judgments, spatial abilities, and gaze entropy predicts task accuracy, but not completion time. We also provide MATLAB open source code for calculating the EEG measures utilized in the study. Our findings suggest designing spatial information displays that adapt their content according to users’ affective and cognitive states, especially for emotionally laden usage contexts.

AbstrakPenelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui tentang Penerapan model permainan rounders yang dimodifikasi terhadap kemampuan gerak dasar Murid SD Negeri Paccinongan Kabupaten Gowa . Metode penelitian yang dilakukan dalam penelitian ini adalah metode eksperimen, dengan jumlah sampel sebanyak 30 (tiga puluh) murid kelas V (lima) SD, yang diperoleh melalui teknik total sampling. Kemudian penelitian dilakukan dengan menggunakan alat tes yaitu tes lempar sasaran, tes lompat jauh tanpa awalan, tes keseimbangan, dan tes kelincahan sekaligus sebagai sumber data awal dan data akhir penelitian. Dari hasil pre test diperoleh hasil kemampuan awal siswa sebesar 42,87, dan setelah diberikan perlakuan (permainan rounders yang dimodifikasi), maka kemampuan akhir siswa sebesar 54,71. Dari data tersebut diperoleh nilai Variabel X1 dengan rata-rata sebesar 5145 dan nilai Variabel X2 dengan rata-rata sebesar 6565. Kemudian data tersebut dianalisis dengan menggunakan rumus uji statistika, yaitu uji normalitas, homogenitas, dan uji t. Penelitian ini berlangsung selama 16 kali pertemuan. Dari hasil analisis data diatas, menunjukkan bahwa ada peningkatan kemampuan gerak dasar siswa setelah diberikan model perlakuan permainan rounders yang dimodifikasi maka penelitian menyatakan bahwa model permainan rounders yang dimodifikasi berpengaruh secara signifikan terhadap kemampuan gerak dasar Murid SD Negeri Paccinongan Kabupaten Gowa. Many studies have shown that behavioral measures are affected by manipulating the imageability of words. Though imageability is usually measured by human judgment, little is known about what factors underlie those judgments. We demonstrate that imageability judgments can be largely or entirely accounted for by two computable measures that have previously been associated with imageability, the size and density of a word’s context and the emotional associations of the word. We outline an algorithmic method for predicting imageability judgments using co-occurrence distances in a large corpus. Our computed judgments account for 58% of the variance in a set of nearly two thousand human imageability judgments, for words that span the entire range of imageability. The two factors account for 43% of the variance in lexical decision reaction times (LDRTs) that is attributable to imageability in a large database of 3697 LDRTs spanning the range of imageability. We document variances in the distribution of our measures across the range of imageability that suggest that they will account for more variance at the extremes, from which most imageability-manipulating stimulus sets are drawn. The two predictors account for 100% of the variance that is attributable to imageability in newly-collected LDRTs using a previously-published stimulus set of 100 items. We argue that our model of imageability is neurobiologically plausible by showing it is consistent with brain imaging data. The evidence we present suggests that behavioral effects in the lexical decision task that are usually attributed to the abstract/concrete distinction between words can be wholly explained by objective characteristics of the word that are not directly related to the semantic distinction. We provide computed imageability estimates for over 29,000 words.

In contrast to standard models of emotional valence, which assume a bipolar valence dimension ranging from negative to positive valence with a neutral midpoint, the evaluative space model (ESM) proposes two independent positivity and negativity dimensions. Previous imaging studies suggest higher predictive power of the ESM when investigating the neural correlates of verbal stimuli. The present study investigates further assumptions on the behavioral level. A rating experiment on more than 600 German words revealed 48 emotionally ambivalent stimuli (i.e., stimuli with high scores on both ESM dimensions), which were contrasted with neutral stimuli in two subsequent lexical decision experiments. Facilitative processing for emotionally ambivalent words was found in Experiment 2. In addition, controlling for emotional arousal and semantic ambiguity in the stimulus set, Experiment 3 still revealed a speed-accuracy trade-off for emotionally ambivalent words. Implications for future investigations of lexical processing and for the ESM are discussed.

Iodine deficiency disorders are estimated to affect over 1.9 million people worldwide. Iodine deficiency is especially serious for women during pregnancy and lactation because of the negative consequences for both mother and infant. The aim of this cross-sectional study was to determine the median urinary iodine concentration (UIC) as a population-level indicator of iodine status among rural women farmers of reproductive age (18–45 years) in the province of Prey Veng, Cambodia. A total of 450 women provided a spot morning urine sample in 2012. Of those women, 93% (n = 420) were non-pregnant and 7% (n = 30) were pregnant at the time of collection. UIC was quantified using the Sandell-Kolthoff reaction with modifications. The median UIC of non-pregnant (139 μg/L) and pregnant women (157 μg/L) were indicative of adequate iodine status using the WHO/UNICEF/ICCIDD epidemiological criteria for both groups (median UIC between 100–199 and 150–249 μg/L, respectively). We conclude that non-pregnant and pregnant women in rural Prey Veng, Cambodia had adequate iodine status based on single spot morning urine samples collected in 2012. More research is warranted to investigate iodine status among larger and more representative populations of women in Cambodia, especially in light of recent policy changes to the national program for universal salt iodization.

Our knowledge about affective processes, especially concerning effects on cognitive demands like word processing, is increasing steadily. Several studies consistently document valence and arousal effects, and although there is some debate on possible interactions and different notions of valence, broad agreement on a two dimensional model of affective space has been achieved. Alternative models like the discrete emotion theory have received little interest in word recognition research so far. Using backward elimination and multiple regression analyses, we show that five discrete emotions (i.e., happiness, disgust, fear, anger and sadness) explain as much variance as two published dimensional models assuming continuous or categorical valence, with the variables happiness, disgust and fear significantly contributing to this account. Moreover, these effects even persist in an experiment with discrete emotion conditions when the stimuli are controlled for emotional valence and arousal levels. We interpret this result as evidence for discrete emotion effects in visual word recognition that cannot be explained by the two dimensional affective space account.

Abstract Gliomas are highly complex and metabolically active brain tumors associated with poor prognosis. Recent reports have found altered levels of blood metabolites during early tumor development, suggesting that tumor development could be detected several years before clinical manifestation. In this study, we performed metabolite analyses of blood samples collected from healthy controls and future glioma patients, up to eight years before glioma diagnosis, and on the day of glioma surgery. We discovered that metabolites related to early glioma development were associated with an increased energy turnover, as highlighted by elevated levels of TCA-related metabolites such as fumarate, malate, lactate and pyruvate in pre-diagnostic cases. We also found that metabolites related to glioma progression at surgery were primarily high levels of amino acids and metabolites of amino acid catabolism, with elevated levels of 11 amino acids and two branched-chain alpha-ketoacids, ketoleucine and ketoisoleucine. High amino acid turnover in glioma tumor tissue is currently utilized for PET imaging, diagnosis and delineation of tumor margins. By examining blood-based metabolic progression patterns towards disease onset, we demonstrate that this high amino acid turnover is also detectable in a simple blood sample. These findings provide additional insight of metabolic alterations during glioma development and progression.

Abstract Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is a leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide, necessitating the identification of novel therapeutic targets. Lysosome Associated Protein Transmembrane 4B (LAPTM4B) is involved in biological processes critical to cancer progression, such as regulation of solute carrier transporter proteins and metabolic pathways, including mTORC1. However, the metabolic processes governed by LAPTM4B and its role in oncogenesis remain unknown. In this study, we conducted unbiased metabolomic screens to uncover the metabolic landscape regulated by LAPTM4B. We observed common metabolic changes in several knockout cell models suggesting of a role for LAPTM4B in suppressing ferroptosis. Through a series of cell-based assays and animal experiments, we demonstrate that LAPTM4B protects tumor cells from erastin-induced ferroptosis both in vitro and in vivo. Mechanistically, LAPTM4B suppresses ferroptosis by inhibiting NEDD4L/ZRANB1 mediated ubiquitination and subsequent proteasomal degradation of the cystine-glutamate antiporter SLC7A11. Furthermore, metabolomic profiling of cancer cells revealed that LAPTM4B knockout leads to a significant enrichment of ferroptosis and associated metabolic alterations. By integrating results from cellular assays, patient tissue samples, an animal model, and cancer databases, this study highlights the clinical relevance of the LAPTM4B-SLC7A11-ferroptosis signaling axis in NSCLC progression and identifies it as a potential target for the development of cancer therapeutics.

Abstract Background The female locust is equipped with unique digging tools, namely two pairs of valves—a dorsal and a ventral—utilized for excavating an underground hole in which she lays her eggs. This apparatus ensures that the eggs are protected from potential predators and provides optimal conditions for successful hatching. The dorsal and the ventral valves are assigned distinct roles in the digging process. Specifically, the ventral valves primarily function as anchors during propagation, while the dorsal valves displace soil and shape the underground tunnel. Results In this study, we investigated the noticeable asymmetry and distinct shapes of the valves, using a geometrical model and a finite element method. Our analysis revealed that although the two pairs of valves share morphological similarities, they exhibit different 3D characteristics in terms of absolute size and structure. We introduced a structural characteristic, the skew of the valve cross-section, to quantify the differences between the two pairs of valves. Our findings indicate that these structural variations do not significantly contribute to the valves’ load-bearing capabilities under external forces. Conclusions The evolutionary development of the form of the female locust digging valves is more aligned with fitting their respective functions rather than solely responding to biomechanical support needs. By understanding the intricate features of these locust valves, and using our geometrical model, valuable insights can be obtained for creating more efficient and specialized tools for various digging applications.
