1. High-Frequency Radar observation of strong and contrasted currents: the Alderney race paradigm

Abstract

The Alderney Race has been identified as a future site for the development of tidal energy, due to its bidirectional strong current reaching 5 m/s during spring tides. This hydrodynamics is very difficult to measure by in situ or remote sensing means. High-frequency coastal radars can provide a synoptic and near-real-time view of such a complex circulation, but the classical processing algorithms are not adapted to the extreme situation of strongly sheared currents. We propose an improved high-resolution direction-finding technique for the azimuthal processing of such radar data. It uses phased-array systems and combines the advantages of the usual beam-forming technique to eliminate many problems related to the distortion of Doppler spectra by extreme currents. The method is evaluated with a unique data set of radar measurements at two radar frequencies (13 and 24.5 MHz) and three spatial resolutions (200, 750, and 1500 m). The radar-based surface currents are analyzed in the light of a high-resolution numerical model and also compared with in situ measurements. While high azimuthal resolution can be achieved in this way, it is shown that the typical range resolutions of 750 and 1500 m are insufficient to account for the strong spatial variations of the surface current at some specific times and locations., Comment: 26 pages, 15 figures, 3 tables

2. Model and method to predict the turbulent kinetic energy induced by tidal currents, application to the wave-induced turbulence

Abstract

A prediction model for the turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) induced by tidal-currents is proposed as a function of the barotropic velocity only, along with a robust method evaluating the different parameters involved using Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) measurements from Alderney Race. We find that the model is able to reproduce correctly the TKE profiles with coefficients of correlation on average higher than 0.90 and normalised root-mean-square errors (NRMSE) less than 14%. Different profiles are also tested for the mean velocity, no satisfactory prediction model is found but we are able to have decent estimates of the velocity shear and friction velocity. Two applications are then carried out. First the turbulent budget terms are estimated and discussed. We identify the turbulent production and dissipation of TKE as the most important mechanisms, then we discuss the validity of several theoretical results derived for isotropic turbulence for this application. A strong departure for the estimation of the turbulent dissipation is notably found and explained by the turbulent anisotropy. At last the prediction model for the TKE is used to infer the wave-induced TKE. We show the importance of removing the tidal component, waves can have a strong influence down to mid-depth.

Abstract

An advanced coupling between a three-dimensional ocean circulation model (CROCO) and a spectral wave model (WAVEWATCH-III) is presented to better represent the interactions of macro-tidal currents with winds and waves. In the previous implementation of the coupled interface between these two models, some of the wave-induced terms in the ocean dynamic equations were computed from their monochromatic approximations (e.g. Stokes drift, Bernoulli head, near-bottom wave orbital velocity, wave-to-ocean energy flux). In the present study, the exchanges of these fields computed from the spectral wave model are implemented and evaluated. A set of numerical experiments for a coastal configuration of the macro-tidal circulation off the Bay of Somme (France) is designed. The impact of the spectral versus monochromatic computation of wave-induced terms has a notable effect on the macro-tidal hydrodynamics, particularly in scenarios involving storm waves and opposing winds to tidal flows. This effect manifests as a reduction in the wave-induced deceleration of the vertical profile of tidal currents. The new implementation provides current magnitudes closer to measurements than those predicted using monochromatic formulations, particularly at the free surface. The spectral-surface Stokes drift and the near-bottom wave orbital velocity are found to be the spectral fields with the most impact, respectively increasing advection towards the free surface and shifting the profile close to the seabed. In the particular case of the Bay of Somme, the approximation of these spectral terms with their monochromatic counterparts ultimately results in an underestimation of ocean surface currents. Our model developments thus provide a better description of the competing effects of tides, winds, and waves on the circulation off macro-tidal bays, with implications for the study of air–sea interactions and sediment transport processes.

Abstract

Equations for the wave-averaged three-dimensional momentum equations have been published in this journal. It appears that these equations are not consistent with the known depth-integrated momentum balance, especially over a sloping bottom. These equations should thus be considered with caution as they can produce erroneous flows, in particular outside of the surf zone. It is suggested that the inconsistency in the equations may arise from the different averaging operators applied to the different terms of the momentum equation. It is concluded that other forms of the momentum equations, expressed in terms of the quasi-Eulerian velocity, are better suited for three dimensional modelling of wave-current interactions., Comment: Paper submitted to J. We deduce a LES model for which we have existence and uniqueness of a strong solution. Finally, we display several numerical simulations showing the practical interest of the model.

Abstract

In this work, we compare three turbulence models used to parameterize the oceanic boundary layer. These three models depend on the bulk Richardson number, which is coherent with the studied region, the West Pacific Warm Pool, because of the large mean shear associated with the equatorial undercurrent. One of these models, called R224, is new and the others are Pacanowski and Philander's model (R213 model) and Gent's model (R23 model). The numerical implementation is based on a non-conservative numerical scheme. The following (three criteria) are used to compare the models: the surface current intensity, the pycnocline's form and the mixed layer depth. We initialize the code with realistic velocity and density profiles thanks the TOGA-TAO array (McPhaden, 1995). In case of static instability zone on the initial density profile, only the R224 model gives realistic results. Afterwards, we study a mixed layer induced by the wind stress. In this case, the R224 results and the Pacanowski and Philander's results are similar. Furthermore, we simulate a long time case. We obtain a linear solution for all models that is in agreement with Bennis and al.

Abstract

Sediment transport modeling in shallow coastal waters is a challenging topic, especially in macrotidal environments where large intertidal areas are subjected to rapid wave transformation and breaking, complex patterns of tidal currents, and dynamic bedforms. Quantifying the sediment fluxes from the inner shelf to the shoreface is crucial to understand the long-term evolution of such embayment. The bay of Somme, facing the English Channel in North-West France, is a particularly relevant environment to tackle these issues. Known for its megatidal range (up to 10m in spring tides), it is in front of a large subtidal sediment source known as the Picard prism. The intertidal area, more than 6 km-wide, features highly dynamic dune fields and tidal channels. The aim of the study is to evaluate the sediment fluxes between the Picard prism and Bay of Somme using numerical modeling and in-situ observations. The first step is to build a numerical configuration which combines the hydrodynamic model CROCO, the spectral wave model WaveWatch-III and the USGS sediment transport model. Three nested grids have been created (100m, 30m, 10m) that are forced at the boundaries by tide, wind, wave spectra and fluvial discharge. Numerical results were tested against ADCP and tidal gauge data. The main conclusions are: i) the flow velocity and the sea surface height are in agreement with observations with a mean RMSE around 0.1m/s and 0.17m for current velocity and sea surface height, respectively ii) a time delay varying between 10 and 30 minutes is observed at some locations, iii) the contribution of the Somme River has very little influence on the results due the low flow discharge for the considered period, iv) the longshore current is well simulated by the coupled model. One of the main limitations of our modeling is due to a bathymetry that was not recorded at the same time as the measurements. Prospects for future work will be to add the USGS sediment transport model in the coupling and to simulate sediment fluxes.

Abstract

Marine tidal turbines are subject to the environment in which they are deployed. In the natural environment, they are gradually colonized by sessile species. These fouling organisms modify the flow around the blades and in the wake of the tidal turbine. Unfortunately, they also complicate the numerical study of such tidal turbines by preventing the use of usual methods such as the Blade Element Method or the Lifting Line Theory. In this context, we propose to use an alternative solution, which combines an Eulerian code to study the near field with a Lagrangian code for the wake. After a short presentation of each code, the coupling method is detailed, and applied to the case of a tidal turbine with its own vertical axis. First results are shown and compared to a full Eulerian simulation. Although the data transmission between both codes works well, discrepancies were found due to abnormal increase of energy in the Lagrangian area. A solution is proposed and explained.

Abstract

This study presents an overview of the main hydrodynamic features of the Alderney Race strait based on in-situ measurements and 2D hydrodynamic model simulations. The strait encompasses a large amplitude of tidal properties (tidal range and tidal wave propagation) and particularly strong currents exceeding 5 m.s-1 with associated counter currents and gyres. Variations in depth, sea bottom roughness, coastal topography and current orientation around the La Hague Cape provide access to a large variety of original hydrodynamic regimes. Some are revealed as locations with a 0.4 m drop in the mean sea level associated with strong average currents. A resonance effect associated with the offshore currents can also be observed close to the coasts. The "St Martin whistle" occurs in a bay whose gyre center oscillates with a reversal of the measured current every 5 – 7 minutes. The Alderney Race represents a particular area of interest for coastal hydrodynamic studies. The available in-situ measurement datasets are rich with recordings of: sea levels; Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) current profiles; surface radar currents; waves; dye experiments; surface and in-depth dissolved tracer surveys. Combined with hydrodynamic models, the complexity of this area can be further understood and knowledge of hydrodynamic process and forcing parameters can be refined, which can be applied to other coastal areas.

35. Surface currents in the Alderney Race from high-frequency radar measurements and three-dimensional modelling

Two weeks of high-frequency radar measurements collected at the Alderney Race are compared with the results of a three-dimensional fully coupled wave–current model. Spatial current measurements are rare in this site, otherwise well investigated through modelling. Thus, the radar measurements offer a unique opportunity to examine the spatial reliability of numerical results, and can help to improve our understanding of the complex currents in the area. Comparison of observed and modelled surface current velocities showed a good agreement between the methods, represented by root mean squared errors ranging from 14 to 40 cm s−1 and from 18 to 60 cm s−1 during neap and spring tides, respectively. Maximum errors were found in shallow regions with consistently high current velocities, represented by mean neap and spring magnitudes of 1.25 m s−1 and 2.7 m s−1, respectively. Part of the differences between modelled and observed surface currents in these areas are thought to derive from limitations in the k-epsilon turbulence model used to simulate vertical mixing, when the horizontal turbulent transport is high. In addition, radar radial currents showed increased variance over the same regions, and might also be contributing to the discrepancies found. Correlation analyses yielded magnitudes above 0.95 over the entire study area, with better agreement during spring than during neap tides, probably because of an increase in the phase lag between radar and model velocities during the latter.

Abstract

Modelling three-dimensional wave-current-turbulence interactions in extreme tidal environments is still challenging and necessary for the development of the tidal industry, particularly for the dimensioning of tidal converters. Following this objective, we focus our study on the most energetic tidal site in Western Europe, the Alderney Race (France). Due to the strong tidal current at this location, wave-current interactions were poorly studied by the past and often neglected. We propose to assess how they impact the Alderney Race hydrodynamic by the use of numerical modelling and in-situ measurements. In this study, the following wave-current interactions were observed: (i) Stokes drift effects inducing an increase/decrease in the current depending on the angle between waves and current, with a maximum influence near the surface, (ii) wave enhancement of the bottom friction reducing the tidal current, (iii) refraction of waves by the current, generating changes in waves directions, and (iv) wave breaking ascribed to tidal current, increasing the turbulent mixing. A non-stationary time delay, varying within a same tidal cycle, was noted, which is reduced by including the local wind effects and by adjusting the bottom stress formulation. This study shows that wave-current interactions play a non-negligible role in Alderney Race although the strong tidal current and that they need to consider by the tidal industry.

The study area is focused on a small region of Alderney Race, where the tidal turbines may be installed. Drilling residuals are modeled by spherical particles. The coupled model is firstly described and validated using an idealized disposition of residuals on a flat and realistic seabed. The model is then applied to monopile technology. Simulation were carried out for different disposition of residuals and initial current direction and intensity. We show that the distance between the bore hole and the residuals is the key parameter controlling the filling. The increase of this distance leads to reduce the filling volume. In addition, the flow direction and the seabed morphology play a negligible role while the distance between bore hole and residuals remains smaller than twenty meters.

Abstract

National audience; This work is a part of a project aiming to study the impact of biofouling on turbine performances. It describes the fluid-structure calculation applied to a Darrieus turbine using the Openfoam code in order to take the mass variation of the solid into account. Forced and induced rotation simulations are compared for water and air. For both fluids, the results show that the flow field in the rotor's wake is similar for the two types of movement. Therefore the solid solver does not change fluid results. Blue mussels are fixed to the blades, which leads to a supplementary mass that has been decorrelated from hydrodynamics to understand its effects. For the chosen implantation (small), the only observable modification is a delay between light and heavier rotors. However, the coarse mesh used in this study is not sufficient to compute the flow around blades with accuracy. This has a strong impact on calculation of forces and by extension on the rotor's dynamics. A mesh convergence procedure is planned to reach the necessary mesh precision and laboratory experiments should be made in order to validate dynamical results with low flow speed.

Abstract

International audience; Tidal energy is a promising way to produce electricity from tidal current. The most energetic tidal site in western Europe is the Alderney race, located between La Hague Cape and the Alderney island. High winds sweeping across the English Channel make wave-current interactions could be crucial to the tidal energy estimate. Pioneer works of Lewis et al. (2014) and Guillou et al. (2016) investigate how wave-current interactions modulate this estimate for several UK tidal sites and Fromveur (France). Bennis et al. (2018) continue these former studies by performing realistic numerical simulations specially for Alderney Race, that are validated with in-situ data. They show that ocean waves reduce or increase the tidal estimate by 10% at 10 meters depth, which is in agreement with former conclusions. Moreover, the inclusion of waves significantly improves the simulation of the vertical structure of the flow, with an acceleration or deceleration of the current velocity near the surface according to the direction of current and waves. These results are for low/medium hydrodynamic conditions (waves and tides). This work is pursued with an analysis of the consequences of the wave-current interactions in extreme conditions on the tidal stream energy estimate: wave height is about 8 meters and tidal range is about 10 meters. On the whole, in-situ measurements and model results are in agreement. The wave model underestimates a few the wave height, while wave period and wave direction are correctly simulated. Refraction effects of waves by current are strong leading to large changes in wave direction. Alderney Race having shallow to intermediate waters, we observe a strong enhancement of the bottom friction by waves for this extreme sea state, that changes the flow near the bottom. Stokes drift effects are dominant when the tidal flow becomes weak between two tides. Near the surface, wave breaking and Stokes drift significantly affect the vertical shape of the flow, producing an homogenization due to mixing and a shearing caused by Stokes drift. In the future, we will work on wave breaking and its impact on the water column in terms of turbulence.

Abstract

International audience; Alderney race in France represents one of the most promising tidal site in Europe. In this region where current reaching 5m/s, an accurate modelling of turbulence is necessary to compute the tidal energy estimate. On the basis of the works of Hecht and al. (2008) and Petersen and al.(2008), we have augmented the coastal circulation code MARS (Lazure et Dumas, 2008) with the Lagrangian Averaged Navier–Stokes–alpha (LANS-α), a Large Eddy Simulation turbulence model. In comparison with former dissipative turbulence models implemented in MARS (e.g. Two equations eddy viscosity turbulence models), LANS-α is more energetic and produce more eddy structures near the grid scale. Firstly, validation of our implementation is made within an idealized test case similar to the one used by Hecht and al. (2008). We have shown the ability of LANS-αmodel to reproduce both horizontal and vertical patterns obtained at higher-resolution simulations with MARS. Finally, the LANS-αmodel is applied in the Alderney race with a fine realistic bathymetry and meteo-oceanic forcing. It appears that LANS-α produces higher kinetic and eddy kinetic energy than the ones computed by MARS with eddy viscosity models, allowing to capture small turbulent structures induced by the seabed variations.

Abstract

International audience; In this contribution we present the first wave measurements collected with a HF radar installed at the north-west coast of France to overlook a promising area for tidal energy extraction. The radar measurements are aimed to help understanding the oceanographic conditions at the site, aid the validation and improvement of numerical models, and ultimately the calculation of tidal stream energy. The results show good agreement when compared against ADCP measurements, especially when the current speed is below 1 m.s-1. The latter appears to have a clear influence not only on the quality of the radar’s wave results, but also on their spatial extent.
