4. The Mental Health Impacts of Fuel Poverty: A Global Scoping Review.

Abstract

Objectives: Fuel poverty, defined in this study as a household's inability to meet basic energy needs, presents a significant challenge. We aimed to map research on the impact of fuel poverty on mental health. Methods: We searched peer review and grey literature repositories. Studies were considered eligible if they focused on both fuel poverty and mental health. Results: 47 studies were included. 64% were published in the last 3 years. 43% focused on the UK sub-geography, with the next most common being Spain (17%) and China (13%). 55% had a quantitative study design. Conceptualisation and operationalisation of fuel poverty varied across studies and contexts. 58% focused on specific vulnerable populations. 46 studies reported evidence of a detrimental association between fuel poverty and mental health. We broadly summarise the role of fuel poverty on mental health under four headings: economic, social, behavioural and environmental. Conclusion: We highlight a need for clear and explicit conceptualisation of fuel poverty, in conjunction with consideration of pathways connecting fuel poverty to mental health, to advance the field and facilitate research which can improve population health. Abstract

The naked mole‐rat (Heterocephalus glaber) is a unique model mammal in which to study socially induced inhibition of the hypothalamic–pituitary–gonadal (HPG) axis. Naked mole‐rat groups exhibit a high degree of reproductive bias in which breeding is restricted to one female (the queen) and one male, with subordinate non‐breeding colony members rarely, if ever, having the opportunity to reproduce due to a dysfunctional HPG axis. It is posited that aggression directed at subordinates by the queen suppresses reproduction in these subordinates, yet the underlying physiological mechanisms causing this dysfunction are unknown. This study aimed to investigate the possible factors contributing to the dysfunction of the HPG axis in subordinate female naked mole‐rats with a specific focus on the role of ovarian feedback and stress‐related factors such as circulating glucocorticoid and endogenous opioid peptides. The results showed that stress‐related factors appear to not mediate the suppression of reproductive function in subordinate female naked mole rats. Indeed, in some cases, the activation of the stress axis may lead to reproductive activation instead of deactivation. At the same time, the role of ovarian sex steroid feedback in reproductive suppression is likely limited and not clearly delineated. This study highlights the need for detailed studies to elucidate the mechanism of reproductive suppression in this unique model mammalian species which may shed light on, and reveal novel mechanisms, in the social regulation of reproduction. Abstract

Aging, often considered a result of random cellular damage, can be accurately estimated using DNA methylation profiles, the foundation of pan-tissue epigenetic clocks. Here, we demonstrate the development of universal pan-mammalian clocks, using 11,754 methylation arrays from our Mammalian Methylation Consortium, which encompass 59 tissue types across 185 mammalian species. These predictive models estimate mammalian tissue age with high accuracy (r > 0.96). Age deviations correlate with human mortality risk, mouse somatotropic axis mutations and caloric restriction. We identified specific cytosines with methylation levels that change with age across numerous species. These sites, highly enriched in polycomb repressive complex 2-binding locations, are near genes implicated in mammalian development, cancer, obesity and longevity. Our findings offer new evidence suggesting that aging is evolutionarily conserved and intertwined with developmental processes across all mammals.

According to evolutionary theory and the immunity–fertility axis, an inverse relationship between reproductive investment and survival (through immunocompetence) is expected. As such, this study investigates if a trade-off between immunocompetence and reproduction arises in two co-operatively breeding African mole-rat species, namely the Damaraland mole-rat (Fukomys damarensis) and common mole-rat (Cryptomys hottentotus hottentotus), who possess female reproductive division of labour. This study also attempted to investigate the relationship between the immune and endocrine systems in Damaraland mole-rats. There was no trade-off between reproduction and immunocompetence in co-operatively breeding African mole-rat species, and in the case of the Damaraland mole-rats, breeding females (BFs) possessed increased immunocompetence compared with non-breeding females (NBFs). Furthermore, the increased levels of progesterone possessed by Damaraland mole-rat BFs compared with NBFs appears to be correlated to increased immunocompetence. In comparison, BF and NBF common mole-rats possess similar immunocompetence. Abstract

Although ovarian endocrine activity has been described in most members of the tribe Hippotragini, little is known about the reproductive endocrine correlates of the roan antelope (Hippotragus equinus), an endangered antelope species of southern Africa. This study characterised the endocrine pattern of the reproductive activity (oestrous cycle, pregnancy and post‐partum period) in the female roan antelope by monitoring faecal progestogen metabolite (fPM) concentrations and oestrogen metabolite (fEM) concentrations for cyclicity and observing reproductive behaviours. The study was carried out over the course of 12 months. At the beginning of this study, all 18 focal females (nulliparous, primiparous and multiparous) were monitored for cyclicity (for between 3 and 4 months). Following observed copulation, pregnancy in multiparous females (n = 10) was subsequently monitored until parturition and 21 days post‐partum. Individual faecal samples were collected three times per week during the presumed period of cyclicity, twice per week during pregnancy and daily for 21 days post‐partum. Mating births, courtship events, and copulations were recorded when observed. In eight of the 18 females monitored, the patterns of fPM and fEM concentrations indicated oestrous cycle lengths (n = 10) of approximately 30.8 ± 2.1 days. The determined lengths of luteal and follicular phases were approximately 15.8 ± 1.5 days and 14.6 ± 2.1 respectively. Pregnancy was marked by a pronounced increase in fPM concentrations until parturition, and lasted approximately 280.4 ± 4.8 days; whereas the intercalving period ranged between 306 and 380 days (n = 9; mean: 333.2 ± 7.4 days). Twenty‐one day after parturition, 78% of the focal females (n = 5) did not show a resumption of the ovarian activity. This study demonstrated that monitoring faecal reproductive hormone metabolite patterns is a valuable approach for estimating ovarian activity in roan antelope and may be used to assist respective conservation breeding programmes by improving management practices.
