Motivation and autonomy are fundamental concepts in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), yet in User Experience (UX) research they have remained surprisingly peripheral. We draw on Self-Determination Theory (SDT) to analyse autonomous and non-autonomous patterns of motivation in 497 interaction experiences. Using latent profile analysis, we identify 5 distinct patterns of motivation in technology use -- "motivational profiles" -- associated with significant differences in need satisfaction, affect, and usability. Users' descriptions of these experiences also reveal qualitative differences between profiles: from intentional, purposive engagement, to compulsive use which users themselves consider unhealthy. Our results complicate exclusively positive notions of intrinsic motivation, and clarify how extrinsic motivation can contribute to positive UX. Based on these findings we identify open questions for UX and SDT, addressing "hedonic amotivation" -- negative experiences in activities which are intrinsically motivated but not otherwise valued -- and "design for internalisation" -- scaffolding healthy and sustainable patterns of engagement over time.

Following the recent interest in van der Waals (vdW) ferroelectrics, topologically nontrivial polar structures have been predicted to form in twisted bilayers. Due to the unconventional nature of vdW ferroelectricity, these topological polar structures have proven difficult to observe experimentally. Here we propose that these textures may be probed optically by showing that topological polarization textures result in exotic nonlinear optical responses. We derive this relationship analytically using non-Abelian Berry connections and a quantum-geometric framework, supported by tight-binding and first-principles calculations. For the case of moir\'e materials without centrosymmetry, which form networks of polar merons and antimerons, the shift photoconductivity forms a vortex-like structure in real space. For a range of frequencies where transitions occur at the Brillouin zone edge, the shift photocurrents are anti-parallel to the in-plane electronic polarization field. Our findings highlight the interplay between complex polarization textures and nonlinear optical responses in vdW materials and provide a sought-after strategy for the experimental detection of topological polarization structures., Comment: 9+14 pages, 4+10 figures

Displacement fields are one of the main tuning knobs employed to engineer flat electronic band dispersions in twisted van der Waals multilayers. Here, we show that electric fields can also be used to tune the phonon dispersion of moir\'e superlattices formed by non-centrosymmetric materials, focusing on twisted transition metal dichalcogenide homobilayers. This effect arises from the intertwining between the local stacking configuration and the formation of polar domains within the moir\'e supercell. For small twist angles, increasing the electric field leads to a universal moir\'e phonon spectrum characterized by a substantially softened longitudinal acoustic phason mode and a flat optical phonon mode, both of which cause a significant enhancement in the vibrational density of states. The phasons also acquire a prominent chiral character, displaying a nonzero angular momentum spread across the Brillouin zone. We discuss how the tunability of the moir\'e phonon spectra may affect electronic properties, focusing on the recently discovered phenomenon of van der Waals ferroelectricity., Comment: 6 pages + SM; comments are welcome

Plasmon polaritons are formed by coupling light with delocalized electrons. The half-light and half-matter nature of plasmon polaritons endows them with unparalleled tunability via a range of parameters, such as dielectric environments and carrier density. Therefore, plasmon polaritons are expected to be tuned when in proximity to polar materials since the carrier density is tuned by an electrostatic potential; conversely, the plasmon polariton response might enable the sensing of polarization. Here, we use infrared nano-imaging and nano-photocurrent measurements to investigate heterostructures composed of graphene and twisted hexagonal boron nitride (t-BN), with alternating polarization in a triangular network of moir\'e stacking domains. We observe that the carrier density and the corresponding plasmonic response of graphene are modulated by polar domains in t-BN. In addition, we demonstrate that the nanometer-wide domain walls of graphene moir\'es superlattices, created by the polar domains of t-BN, provide momenta to assist the plasmonic excitations. Furthermore, our studies establish that the plasmon of graphene could function as a delicate sensor for polarization textures. The evolution of polarization textures in t-BN under uniform electric fields is tomographically examined via plasmonic imaging. Strikingly, no noticeable polarization switching is observed under applied electric fields up to 0.23 V/nm, at variance with transport reports. Two-dimensional (2D) materials that exhibit spontaneous magnetization, polarization or strain (referred to as ferroics) have the potential to revolutionize nanotechnology by enhancing the multifunctionality of nanoscale devices. However, multiferroic order is difficult to achieve, requiring complicated coupling between electron and spin degrees of freedom. We propose a universal method to engineer multiferroics from van der Waals magnets by taking advantage of the fact that changing the stacking between 2D layers can break inversion symmetry, resulting in ferroelectricity and possibly magnetoelectric coupling. We illustrate this concept using first-principles calculations in bilayer NiI$_2$, which can be made ferroelectric upon rotating two adjacent layers by $180^{\circ}$ with respect to the bulk stacking. Furthermore, we discover a novel multiferroic order induced by interlayer charge transfer which couples the interlayer spin order and electronic polarization. Moire superlattices formed in van der Waals heterostructures due to twisting, lattice mismatch and strain present an opportunity for creating novel metamaterials with unique properties not present in the individual layers themselves. Ferroelectricity for example, arises due to broken inversion symmetry in twisted and strained bilayers of 2D semiconductors with stacking domains of alternating out-of-plane polarization. However, understanding the individual contributions of twist and strain to the formation of topological polar nanostructures remains to be established and has proven to be experimentally challenging. Inversion symmetry breaking has been predicted to give rise to an in-plane component of polarization along the domain walls, leading to the formation of a network of topologically non-trivial merons (half-skyrmions) that are Bloch-type for twisted and Neel-type for strained systems. Here we utilise angle-resolved, high-resolution vector piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM) to spatially resolve polarization components and topological polar nanostructures in marginally twisted bilayer WSe2, and provide experimental proof for the existence of topologically non-trivial meron/antimeron structures. We observe both Bloch-type and Neel-type merons, allowing us to differentiate between moire superlattices formed due to twist or heterogeneous strain. This first demonstration of non-trivial real-space topology in a twisted van der Waals heterostructure opens pathways for exploring the connection between twist and topology in engineered nano-devices.

Ultra-wide bandgap (UWBG) semiconductors are poised to transform power electronics by surpassing the capabilities of established wide bandgap materials, such as GaN and SiC, owing to their capability to operate at higher voltage, frequency, and temperature ranges. While bulk group-III nitrides and their alloys have been extensively studied in the UWBG realm, their two-dimensional counterparts remain unexplored. Here, we examine the stability and electronic properties of monolayers of ordered boron-based group-III nitride alloys with general formula BxM1-xN, where M = Al, Ga. On the basis of ab initio calculations we identify a number of energetically and dynamically stable structures. Instrumental to their stability is a previously overlooked out-of-plane displacement (puckering) of atoms, which induces a polar ordering and antiferroelectric ground state. Our findings reveal the energy barrier between metastable ferroelectric states is lowered by successive switching of out-of-plane displacements through an antiferroelectric state., Comment: 18 pages, 3 figures

Applying long wavelength periodic potentials on quantum materials has recently been demonstrated to be a promising pathway for engineering novel quantum phases of matter. Here, we utilize twisted bilayer boron nitride (BN) as a moir\'e substrate for band structure engineering. Small-angle-twisted bilayer BN is endowed with periodically arranged up and down polar domains, which imprints a periodic electrostatic potential on a target two-dimensional (2D) material placed on top. As a proof of concept, we use Bernal bilayer graphene as the target material. The resulting modulation of the band structure appears as superlattice resistance peaks, tunable by varying the twist angle, and Hofstadter butterfly physics under a magnetic field. Additionally, we demonstrate the tunability of the moir\'e potential by altering the dielectric thickness underneath the twisted BN. Finally, we find that near-60{\deg}-twisted bilayer BN provides a unique platform for studying the moir\'e structural effect without the contribution from electrostatic moir\'e potentials. Two-dimensional materials are a highly tunable platform for studying the momentum space topology of the electronic wavefunctions and real space topology in terms of skyrmions, merons, and vortices of an order parameter. Such textures for electronic polarization can exist in moir\'e heterostructures. A quantum-mechanical definition of local polarization textures in insulating supercells was recently proposed. Here, we propose a definition for local polarization that is also valid for systems with topologically non-trivial bands. We introduce semilocal hybrid polarizations, which are valid even when the Wannier functions in a system cannot be made exponentially localized in all dimensions. We use this definition to explicitly show that nontrivial real-space polarization textures can exist in topologically non-trivial systems with non-zero Chern number under (1) an external superlattice potential, and (2) under a stacking-induced moir\'e potential. In the latter, we find that while the magnitude of the local polarization decreases discontinuously across a topological phase transition from trivial to topologically nontrivial, the polarization does not completely vanish. Ferroelectricity is commonly understood in terms of dynamical charges, which represent the dipole moments generated by atomic displacements or the forces induced by electric fields. In ferroelectrics with a high degree of symmetry, the dynamical charges are typically symmetric tensors, and can be visualized as ellipsoids. In van der Waals (vdW) materials which break centrosymmetry, a new type of ferroelectricity arises which differs greatly from conventional ferroelectrics. The polarization is purely electronic, arising from an interlayer charge transfer, and most of the polarization generated is perpendicular to atomic motion. We show that the unconventional properties of vdW ferroelectrics are manifested in their dynamical charges, which exhibit spatial modulation and intrinsic asymmetry. Dynamical charges in vdW ferroelectrics, and more generally, any strongly anisotropic ferroelectric, can be visualized as deformable, non-ideal ellipsoids dependent on the atomic configuration. Furthermore, we show that, due to the mixed electrostatic boundary conditions employed for two-dimensional materials, non-diagonal dynamical charges in 2D materials are always asymmetric.

In spite of the interest in the two-dimensional electron gases (2DEGs) experimentally found at surfaces and interfaces, important uncertainties remain about the observed insulator--metal transitions (IMTs). Here we show how an explicit improper coupling of carrier sources with a relevant soft mode significantly affects the transition. The analysis presented here for 2DEGs at polar interfaces is based on group theory, Landau-Ginzburg theory, and illustrated with first-principles calculations for the prototypical case of the LaAlO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ interface, for which such a structural transition has recently been observed. This direct coupling implies that the appearance of the soft mode is always accompanied by carriers. Ultrathin bismuth exhibits rich physics including strong spin-orbit coupling, ferroelectricity, nontrivial topology, and light-induced structural dynamics. We use \textit{ab initio} calculations to show that light can induce structural transitions to four transient phases in bismuth monolayers. These light-induced phases exhibit nontrivial topological character, which we illustrate using the recently introduced concept of spin bands and spin-resolved Wilson loops. Specifically, we find that the topology changes via the closing of the electron and spin band gaps during photo-induced structural phase transitions, leading to distinct edge states. An accurate description of the low-energy electronic bands in twisted bilayer graphene (tBLG) is of great interest due to their relation to correlated electron phases, such as superconductivity and Mott-insulator behavior at half-filling. The paradigmatic model of Bistritzer and MacDonald [PNAS 108, 12233 (2011)], based on the moir\'e pattern formed by tBLG, predicts the existence of "magic angles" at which the Fermi velocity of the low-energy bands goes to zero, and the bands themselves become dispersionless. Here, we reexamine the low-energy bands of tBLG from the ab initio electronic structure perspective, motivated by features related to the atomic relaxation in the moir\'e pattern, namely circular regions of AA stacking, triangular regions of AB/BA stacking and domain walls separating the latter. We find that the bands are never perfectly flat and the Fermi velocity never vanishes, but rather a "magic range" exists where the lower band becomes extremely flat and the Fermi velocity attains a non-zero minimum value. We propose a simple $(2+2)$-band model, comprised of two different pairs of orbitals, both on a honeycomb lattice: the first pair represents the low-energy bands with high localization at the AA sites, while the second pair represents highly dispersive bands associated with domain-wall states. This model gives an accurate description of the low-energy bands with few (13) parameters which are physically motivated and vary smoothly in the magic range. In addition, we derive an effective two-band hamiltonian which also gives an accurate description of the low-energy bands. This minimal two-band model affords a connection to a Hubbard-like description of the occupancy of sub-bands and can be used a basis for exploring correlated states., Comment: Accepted in Phys. Rev. Recently, topologically nontrivial polarization textures have been predicted and observed in nanoscale systems. While these polarization textures are interesting and promising in terms of applications, their topology in general is yet to be fully understood. For example, the relation between topological polarization structures and band topology has not been explored, and polar domain structures are typically considered in topologically trivial systems. In particular, the local polarization in a crystal supercell is not well-defined, and typically calculated using approximations which do not satisfy gauge invariance. Furthermore, local polarization in supercells is typically approximated using calculations involving smaller unit cells, meaning the connection to the electronic structure of the supercell is lost. In this work, we propose a definition of local polarization which is gauge invariant and can be calculated directly from a supercell without approximations. We show using first-principles calculations for commensurate bilayer hexagonal boron nitride that our expressions for local polarization give the correct result at the unit cell level, which is a first approximation to the local polarization in a moir\'e superlattice. We also illustrate using an effective model that the local polarization can be directly calculated in real space. Finally, we discuss the relation between polarization and band topology, for which it is essential to have a correct definition of polarization textures., Comment: 16 pages, 6 figures

Out-of-plane polar domain structures have recently been discovered in strained and twisted bilayers of inversion symmetry broken systems such as hexagonal boron nitride. Here we show that this symmetry breaking also gives rise to an in-plane component of polarization, and the form of the total polarization is determined purely from symmetry considerations. The in-plane component of the polarization makes the polar domains in strained and twisted bilayers topologically non-trivial, forming a network of merons and antimerons (half-skyrmions and half-antiskyrmions). For twisted systems, the merons are of Bloch type whereas for strained systems they are of N\'eel type. We propose that the polar domains in strained or twisted bilayers may serve as a platform for exploring topological physics in layered materials and discuss how control over topological phases and phase transitions may be achieved in such systems., Comment: Accepted version

The phenomenological theory for the polar instability giving rise to a two-dimensional electron gas at perovskite interfaces is hereby extended to include the coupling to perovskite tilts. A Landau theory for homogeneous tilts is first explored, setting the scene for the further, more realistic Landau-Ginzburg theory describing varying tilt amplitudes across a thin film. The theory is also generalized to account for the response to an applied electric field normal to the interface, which allows a finer control on phase transitions. The conventionally described physics of a single metal-insulator transition is substantially enriched by the coupling, the model describing various scenarios with one or two transitions, possibly continuous or discontinuous. We present a general relation between the electromechanical couplings of infinitesimal strain and electric field to arbitrary order, measured at fixed voltage and at fixed electric field. We show that the improper response at fixed field can be written as the strain derivative of the $n^{\text{th}}$ order susceptibility tensor, and the proper response at fixed voltage drop can be written as the response at fixed field plus corrections for dilations and 90$^{\circ}$ rotations induced by strain. Our theory correctly reproduces the proper piezoelectric response and we go beyond with the electrostrictive response. We present first-principles calculations of the improper electrostrictive response at fixed field, and illustrate how the correction is used to obtain the proper response at fixed voltage. This distinction is of high importance given the recent interest in giant electrostrictors exhibiting electromechanical responses as large as the piezoelectric ones., Comment: Accepted version

Halide perovskites exhibit giant photostriction, that is, volume or shape changes upon illumination. However, the microscopic origin of this phenomenon remains unclear and there are experimental reports of both light-induced lattice expansion and contraction. In this paper we establish a general method, based on first-principles calculations and molecular orbital theory, which provides a microscopic picture of photostriction in insulators based on the orbital characters of their electronic bands near the Fermi level. For lead-halide perovskites, we find that different valence states have different bonding characters, leading to opposing strengthening or weakening of bonds depending on the photoexcitation energy. The overall trend is that light induces lattice contraction at low excitation energies, while giant lattice expansion occurs at high excitation energies, rationalizing experimental reports., Comment: 7 pages + 4 figures

Using institutional economic theory as our guiding framework, we develop a model to describe how populist discourse by a nation's political leader influences entrepreneurship. We hypothesize that populist discourse reduces entrepreneurship by creating regime uncertainty concerning the future stability of the institutional environment, resulting in entrepreneurs anticipating higher future transaction costs. Our model highlights two important factors that moderate the relationship. First, is the strength of political checks and balances, which we hypothesize weakens the negative relationship between populist discourse and entrepreneurship by providing entrepreneurs with greater confidence that the actions of a populist will be constrained. Second, the political ideology of the leader moderates the relationship between populist discourse and entrepreneurship. The anti-capitalistic rhetoric of left-wing populism will create greater regime uncertainty than right-wing populism, which is often accompanied by rhetoric critical of free trade and foreigners but also supportive of business interests. The effect of centrist populism, which is accompanied by a mix of contradictory and often moderate ideas that make it difficult to discern future transaction costs, will have a weaker negative effect on entrepreneurship than either left-wing or right-wing populism. We empirically test our model using a multi-level design and a dataset comprised of more than 780,000 individuals in 33 countries over the period 2002-2016. Our analysis largely supports our theory regarding the moderating role of ideology. The discovery of unconventional ferroelectric behavior in twisted bilayers has prompted the consideration of moir\'e heterostructures as polar materials. However, misconceptions about the nature and origin of the observed ferroelectricity indicate that a better theoretical understanding of the polar properties of moir\'e heterostructures is needed. In this paper, it is proposed, and verified with first-principles calculations, that all moir\'e heterostructures exhibit an out-of-plane moir\'e polar domain (MPD) structure. In transition metal dichalcogenide bilayers, an interlayer charge transfer occurs due to the change in stacking arrangements throughout the moir\'e superlattice, leading to a local out-of-plane dipole moment, with the magnitude and shape of the MPDs being dominated by the chalcogen atoms. While the MPDs in all heterostructures are sensitive to the moir\'e period, it is only in the homo-bilayers that they can be tuned with an out-of-plane electric field. The misconceptions about ferroelectricity in moir\'e heterostructures are addressed, and it is proposed that the only scenario in which the MPDs can be considered ferroelectric domains is via a global van der Waals sliding by one third of a unit cell in a homo-bilayer. It is well known that stacking domains form in moir\'e superlattices due to the competition between the interlayer van der Waals forces and intralayer elastic forces, which can be recognized as polar domains due to the local spontaneous polarization in bilayers without centrosymmetry. We propose a theoretical model which captures the effect of an applied electric field on the domain structure. The coupling between the spontaneous polarization and field leads to uneven relaxation of the domains, and a net polarization in the superlattice at nonzero fields, which is sensitive to the moir\'e period. We show that the dielectric response to the field reduces the stacking energy and leads to softer domains in all bilayers. We then discuss the recent observations of ferroelectricity in the context of our model.
